Speaker 1 (00:00):
Paul DeMarco joined us. Now, good to see if Paul.

(00:02):
I'm glad you stop. Fridays are always a good time
when you're here. We're going to play the Secret Sound
game coming up in just a bit, so let's start
right out of the gate. You had a question about
the coffee.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
What did you say you wanted a car with a
coffee maker in it?

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Hey, we're talking about that. Yeah, I'm glad you're listening. Well,
it was part of the random fact Friday this year. Yes, yes,
And what was the fact that back.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
In the day, I think they had a coffee maker
in the car.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Some Volkswagens in nineteen fifty nine had coffee makers built
right into the dashboard.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
So you're four, you're all in so, oh.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
My gosh, that's a great idea kind of you know,
you load up. I guess it'd have to be curry cups, right,
and you put about twenty am minute a little rack
and then all you have to do is hit the
button when you get in there.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
So you go to the dealerships. I want a sun roof,
I want heated seats and my coffee maker police so
I can make my double Lotte, you.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Know, I'm thinking this through now, I'd be troubled at
the water situation. I mean, where's it coming from?

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Same as the wind show wiper fluid radiator.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
I'm backing up on that he send your mind, but
I do like the idea. Maybe you have a purified
water system in the car as well. Huh.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
We's been as much on coffee.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
With Childer hot kids. You want you want, you want,
you want to La hot or you're going with a
skinny and you know fitting? Okay, Anyway, we digress. Welcome
in uh. Do you want to start with a parole board? Aliyah?
In homewood situation? Why don't we start with the parole board?

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Look this as we were concerned when uh A killer
was released this week and this was our concern about
the direction of the parole board when League Wealthy is
no longer the chair new Pearl chair, they let a
killer left and there's.

Speaker 1 (01:39):
A lot of this happened. How did we wor here?

Speaker 2 (01:41):
We got here? Because there has been uh, these advocates
on on the far left been attacking League Wealthy, who
was to chair of the Parole Board, who returned the
pro board back where it was supposed to be putting
the justice system, public safety and crime victims first. Instead,
she's removed, you put a new prob chore board chair
in and now you had a killer release this week

(02:04):
and you can see what's coming. And crime victim advocates
are really concerned about where we are, that we're going
to go back to where we were, and you don't.
Under nobody, It doesn't make any sense to anyone.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
How does one get to become the chair of the
parole Board. Is this an election appointment thing?

Speaker 2 (02:19):
You know?

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Is the governor involved? Is Steve Marshall involved?

Speaker 2 (02:22):
The governor appointed? And again there was legislation back in
twenty nineteen to reform the pro board and give credit
to Steve Marshall and the legislature and the governor after
we had three individuals murdered hatchet death by somebody who
should not have been paroled. So it was reformed. But
now we're about to get back where we were before
j T.

Speaker 1 (02:39):
She appointed the new one. Yes, why Kivy? Why right?
I mean, League.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Walthy was the best pro board chair we'd ever had.
She was putting crime victims first, she was putting public
safety first. Yeah, and now there's a real concern where
we're going to.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
Go how long is that appointment? That's a four year,
four year deal, and then they look at it again. Wow,
that's crazy. Hopefully there's going to be something that can
be done about you know, the liberal position on this
and why you would not you know, go in a
different direction.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Well, the concern is you're going to start having a
lot more boalan felons released for prisons. Hell, again, these
aren't misdemeanor crimes, folks, for getting parolled on. That's not
what the are in state prisons.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Look, I'm all about rehabilitation going through programs, but you
murder somebody, you know, you know, we could go on.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
I mean, look at all the horrific crimes just in
the past month, right, children, everything, and some folks I
mean are well, these are the people that need to
be paroled.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
A lot of people are upset on the Brian Coburger
plea deal because of this very reason. Okay, you get
four consecutive life sentences, you're going to prison for life
with no possibility of parole, accept unless we decided to
change it and change the sentencing like they did the
Menendez brothers, And all of a sudden they changed his
sentence from life without parole. These guys got reduced to

(04:04):
twenty five to life and all of a sudden, well
wait a minute, now that brings a parole possibility here,
and they're looking at it now after all these years
to let them out.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
But you're only going to see a life without parle
for a capital murder most of the time, or homicide.
It's going to be life. But in Alabama, we don't
have truth in sentencing, which means life is not really
life and prol that means they could be up for
parole seven eight, ten years.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Jeez, just doesn't make sense. Right. Common sense has left
the governor's office.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Well, it's the system we have in Alabama that's going
to be changed, but we don't have truth in sentencing.
That in addition to what's going on at the parole board.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
As a resident of Homewood, and you know these folks
involved in city government there, the police department, and obviously
the residents there. But a situation that took place how
long ago was the Homewood soccer field event. I forget
the end of June. Okay, this is where there was
a confrontation. It was at nights the police pulled up

(04:58):
on a car. Next thing you know, the police say
there was a gun. The family says there was no gun.
There was somebody else in the car, I believe, a
girlfriend or at least a friend. That's a girl that
kind of took off and then they find out who
she was. Obviously they were smoking weed I think, and
the cops said you look, you know, what are you
doing here? And things escalated and next thing you know,

(05:20):
the police life felt, you know, his life felt in danger,
so pulled the gun and shot this kid eighteen years old,
I believe, and he died. So now Homewood police turned
it automatically, right, they have to turn it over to
a LEA to investigate. They can't do it them.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
So yeah, yeah, independent investigation.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
There you go. Is that common? Is that what happens
all the time when there's a police involved shooting. Yeah,
because you don't want to be biased.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Well yeah, I mean there would be a question and
you wouldn't want to invest to get your own agency.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
Okay, So ALEVA doesn't come in in everything, though, only
when it's a I guess what if it's a FED
crime or something like that. You know, they share and
use each other's resources and things like that. But in
this case, Aleah took it over a bit. The Homewood
Police Department was still under scrutiny, like you need to
release it, and they were protesting in Homewood and all this, Oh,

(06:20):
we don't have the case anymore.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Well, I mean the police were following the law, which
there was a law last year that was passed. It
again talked about who was when in what regarding body cams,
and in this case, the Homewood Police Department followed the law,
followed the protocols, and but most importantly, the police chief
within forty eight hours released a statement what was on

(06:44):
that body cam where he said what occurred and what
forced the police officer to have to take the action
he did.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
You're not going to say that unless that's true, because
the video footage at some point will be shown and
they have the proof in the pudding. Well, here he
is with the gun in his hand. So how do
you argue that. Why would the family react so quickly
to say that's a lie. He didn't have a.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Gun, you know, obviously tragic for the family. Yes, also
we need to think again, but this police officer and
what he was forced to do and what he's been through,
and the threats against this police officer, the threats against
this police department, the threats against the city based on

(07:32):
what And I anticipate when this is the family gets
to see video, and then the district attorney will will
get the results of the investigation. I anticipate that the
investigation will show the police officer had justifiable shooting. But
will there be any apologies to the police officer that

(07:53):
was threatened or yes, what the police chief said was
absolutely correct? I mean, and have you can have sympathy
for the parents, but also have sympathy for an officer
who has been threatened and the police department has been
slandered and defamed, right, and who go out every day
and risk their lives to protect the public.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Do you anticipate the you know, releasing the video footage
will be family and attorneys only, or will this.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
Be because that's what the law requires. Okay, it's not.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
But sometimes these things get out and next thing, you know,
once it hits the internet, it's.

Speaker 2 (08:28):
Well, I mean it should. I mean, it's a terrible
situation what happen on that video, And I mean, there's
no public right based on the law, it's who's who's
in the video in this case would be the family.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
Would like you said, do you think the defense attorneys
in this case for the young man's family will make
a statement if in fact, there is a video that
shows the gun is there, that they'll make a statement
and say, we saw the video footage, there was a
gun involved, and we are devastated for the family. Uh,
and and just leave it at that, or will they

(08:59):
just ignore this?

Speaker 2 (09:00):
I would hope, but if you've seen what's been happening
in the threats by Black Lives Matter, the threats against
police officers, because this will not meet the narrative if
the video will show what the police chief said within
forty eight hours, and that's I hope we can. Yeah,

(09:20):
but I'm just not anticipating.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
That so well when you talk about this.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
Yeah, you know again they have made this about race,
They've made this about police officers, They've made this about
the city of Homewood, And so you know this will
be released, that the district attorney will show this to
the family and we'll see what happens there.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
And they have not talked about who the police officer is. No, no, no, no,
Nor do I think they should because you know.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
There have been threats against this right poor police officer
in the family and the police and the police officers
in Homewood what they've had to deal with, and will
we hear anything about that once this comes out Again,
we know what the truth is based on what the
police chief release, but that still wasn't good enough.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
Yeah, yeah, well other's other than the family, certainly hope
calm our heads prevail no matter what the statement is.
When this comes out and they wrap up and Leah
will have a statement about this, I'm sure that they're
going to say we've shown the family of the video.
There was in fact a gun involved in this that
led this officer to you know, protect himself in this.
So we shall see you expect this announcement today.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
Well, I think it's going to be released today. So yes,
this will be released to the district attorney today. So
the investigation and the body cam is expected to be
released to the district attorney day. So at that point
Danny Carr, the district attorney, will have the video, the
body cam, and he will have the report of the
Alabama law enforcement agents.

Speaker 1 (10:43):
Well, the family get it today.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
It will be up to Danny Carr, the district attorney,
at that point, because he will have the body, is.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
He obligated at this point since he.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
Has said that he would. Oh, he has said that
he would, so, I mean it could happen when he
makes that decision.

Speaker 1 (10:56):
All right, we'll have the coverage for you on this
and keep you up to date all day long, no
doubt about that,
