Speaker 1 (00:00):
Paul DeMarco is in the studio with this boy. I'll
tell you what a difference of day makes. Did you
see welcome inbody, Good to see him.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Good morning.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
Did you see that AJ mccerrn, former quarterback for the
Crimson Tide, is now throwing his hat into the political
ring here in the state of Alabama. What did you
think when you saw that he wants to be our
next lieutenant governor?
Speaker 2 (00:17):
You know, first we heard coach Bruce Pearl and Paul Finbaum.
Now Aj mccaern there seems to be a.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Well, the other two didn't come in, they.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Know, but there's a lot there was talk yes, getting
and I guess they're still talk about so kind of
a high profile folks with names, right right, So this
lieutenant governor's race has definitely gotten interesting. You have already
candidates in that race, the Secretary of State Wes Allen,
the Agriculture Commissioner Rick Pate, who have name, idea, who's
(00:47):
been leading in the polls. So we'll see now with
AJ mccerron getting in the race, what that does to
the race.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
Tommy Tarberville seemed to be you know, he commented about
this and said, hey, you know, come on, let's see
what he can do. I don't know much about his
political stand answers and where he's you know, coming from,
but if he wants to get in, then I mean,
I don't mind an outsider that's in. You know.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Well, you know, it's been interesting when Senator Tuberville got
in the race, they're already hope high profile race US
Congressman Bradley burning and you remember Senator Jeff Sessions got
in the race, right, So it's almost the same situation.
The difference was, at the time, we don't know enough
about AJ mccerron at right now other than his being
quarterback funerals of Alabama. Senator Tuberville got in there and
(01:28):
said I'm a conservative and he talked the talk right
the wall. So now that AJ's made the announcement, the
question is when he gets out there, is he gonna
talk about his policies, procedure where he sees that, will
you know, engage Republican voters, Right, that's what it's going
to be about.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Well, I'm going to try and get AJ on. I've
you know, got a couple of people reaching out to him,
so hopefully we'll get him in here. You know, next
week and you know, have him on start talking about
what he stands for and what he's all about.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Well, and remember qualifying as in January in this race
is Republican Party primaries not till next May, so there's
a lot of time between now and mix sure next
May for folks to hear from all the candidates.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
All right, I want to ask you your thoughts on
Obviously you're not going to be on board with this,
but what took place in Montgomery? You remember that mass
shooting they had down there, and one of the guys
they had in jail. I guess the judge decided to
lower his bond, and now he's out, and Steve Marshall
and the governor both extremely irritating upset with that. And
(02:27):
now there's pushing a bill in legislation to try and
get this to stop and tie that type of thing
into Anaya's law, an iablancac. So why would the judge
decide to lower this guy's bond to sixty grand, which
basically means you got to come up with six thousand dollars.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Right, there's a bonds, there's a schedule where recommendations. That's
the high end for sixty thousand for a class A felony.
And it's true next May voters were able to change
the Alabama Constitution to say that attempted murder. You a
judge can say no bail, that's already with capital mar
right right, But in a situation like this, a judge
has a discretion and could have given a higher bail
(03:05):
amount two hundred and fifty five hundred thousand, even higher.
And there's a lot of questions after this shooting, this
into shooting, allegedly shooting into this huge crowd where you
had what twelve injured, four day killed two, So why
such a low amount? And it's part of the problem.
We see this happens in Jefferson County all the time,
(03:26):
and this is why we have this revolving door. And
then somebody gets out and guess what they come in
another crime. So again the legislature is going to have
to address this whole bail schedule as well, and who
can get in and get out?
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Look, you know, and I've had this conversation, you just
have it all the time with Sheriff Mike Cale and
Randy Christian about bond and you know, once again, it's
based on your ability to not flee and show up
in court. It's not really a lot of times based
on the actual crime. But when it's a heinous crime
like this and there's murder involved, don't the judges also
(04:00):
have the option to say no bond.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Well, they do for a capital murder situation for like that,
So it shouldn't be any different than something with an
attempted murder. When you see a situation that happened where
this individual allegedly shot in this huge crowd and you said,
so many people injured, so many people kids.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Is common sense right there.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Absolutely, and that's what the public expects with our criminal
justice system, protect the public.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Well, hopefully the legislation will go through the bill that's
going to be introduced to ramp this up and kind
of you know, prevent that from happening all the time.
We'll be seen by our legislative body down there and
get this thing figured out. Yeah, that's awful, Paul, I
know you got to run. Thank you for coming in
this morning. Good to see you.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
See you next week.
