Speaker 1 (00:00):
Legendary sports broadcaster and the author and host of Rick
Carly Good News All the Time. On social media, Rick
Carley joined us Rick. Welcome and thanks for being every buddy.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Hey, thanks, thank you, Hey, thanks for playing me in
with the Doobie Brothers too. Of course, you remember how
old I am. So you went to the you went
to old school on me.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Look you yeah, you and I? You and I both
right there. I mean, who doesn't love some good classic
rock every once in a while, right, I.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Don't know, it isn't it as good stuff? Yeah? So yeah,
it burns the big story. Huh.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Well, you know, I was kind of surprised that they
let him go till Sunday. I thought they might walk
them off the field straight to the parking lot. But
it took a minute to get, you know, anything set
up for Sunday. But the ax fell. And I don't
think a lot of people were surprised, were you.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
No, I don't think so. You know, it's fifteen and
nineteen overall, over two and a half years and six
and sixteen in the SEC. Somebody on x ro to
you know, there's always a wise guy there on social
media said, you know, to to daylight savings time. It's
good news for hu Freezer will have another hour to
clean out his office, you know, So I mean it
(01:08):
was just time and and you know, but I wrote
this on Facebook this morning. If you want to check
it out at Red Carly. Good news. And you got
to think of you know, Hugh Freeze, the person who
I think it's time. This could be a good thing
for Hugh Frieze, is what I'm going to add, because
I think he needs to dig into his prostate cancer treatment.
Not that he's ignoring it by any means, but you know,
(01:30):
he doesn't look good. He's it's a stressful job. So
I think maybe you know, he's got the payout, he's
got the buyout of fifteen point eight millions. I mean,
I think he's going to be able to pay the mortgage.
So you know, perhaps in the long run, you know,
he gets his health back together and he's you know,
on this earth for many more decades to come and
(01:51):
feeling better about it.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
Well, you know, there's guys that, you know, different styles
of coach, and we've certainly seen that in the SEC
for sure. But you know, one thing, I don't really
like what coaches do. And I thought Hugh Freeze did
this some and Brian Kelly did it at LSU in
press conference after a loss. The head coach, I think
(02:12):
should own it. You don't call players out. In my
mind at a press conference after a loss, you don't
blame this position or that position. It's like, Hey, I'm
the head coach. I take responsibility. We got to execute better,
we got to coach better, and we've got to get
these guys to perform better based on the skill level
we know they have. Not. Oh it was that tight
(02:32):
ends coach or that defensive bags problem. Our quarterbacks stunk today.
I mean I never liked that, and that's kind of
what soured me on this whole thing.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
And I think a lot of Auburn fans agreed to
be on that. The thing with Hu Freeze is he
in postgame press conferences and news conferences, he was almost
honest to a t. You know, he just said what
was on his mind. He had no filter. And you know,
coach Shabans talked about this on game day says, looking,
I never did that. You never call out I was
(03:03):
going to say an amateur athlete. They're not amateurs anymore, right,
they're getting paid. But so it's a little bit of
a different world out there. But I think that's a
good philosophy. It's on me. I'm the boss, you know.
If anybody has to write the ship, it's me and
take the fall. But again, he was, he was really
I found his news conferences to be really interesting that
(03:23):
his coach Freese, because he was just so you know,
he just said what was on his mind, and sometimes
I didn't quite think it through, you know fully before
he said it.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Well, we're talking with Rick Carly, legendary sports broadcaster here
in our city, in our state. Rick, I honestly about
the Auburn situation there. I mean, you've got the boosters,
you've got the alumni. It seems that there are too
many chefs in the kitchen. Every time they hire a coach,
they don't let them do what they want to do.
They get in there and go well, and they're more
in their business. Sound like a coach, Saman says, Nobody
(03:56):
gets in my office and tells me how to do this.
What is go going long? Where you have to smetch
turnover and how many head coaches and buyouts now in
the last five seven years, It's it's kind of crazy.
So what do you think that Ronal is in Auburn's
hiring situation and allowing them to be successful.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah, down through the years, you've always heard that there
are too many chefs in the kitchen with Auburn. But
uh uh, and again you go back to a guy
like saving and to keep going back to Alabama. We're
talking about Auburn. But you know, when Saban came in,
he says, looking, I mean he's to have my business
or else. You know, that's the way it's going to be.
I think they need a little bit more of that
(04:35):
at Auburn. Look at Auburn. I've always said that the
Auburn game day experienced Auburn fans are just some of
the best in the country. I mean, from the from
the Tiger Walk to the Eagle flights to Bond you know,
you know bon you know John Bond, John Bojo. What
am I saying? Living in a prayer? Thank you? I
always think the man I handled. But but that whole
(05:01):
that whole game experience, especially at night, is at Auburn
is just unbelievable. And you know, the tumors thing afterwards,
and and and Auburn wants that back. I mean you know,
and I give the Auburn fans credit. They sold out
that place the other night they're playing Kentucky while it
was Kentucky at one and five sec team and watching
that game was brutal. I mean, and let's be honest,
(05:24):
I mean, oh what gosh. And my wife was saying,
they going wow, it was terrible. And on both sides
it was just a bad game. And and and Auburn
fans sticking by their team because they love it so much.
So I think they deserve better and they hope to
get better. And that's not any slight on what kind
of a man who freezes or you know, a guy
(05:46):
his it just didn't work out. So, you know, I
hope that's that the good coach comes in that big
game day experience that we're talking about, comes back to
Auburn and remains at Auburn and they go forward with
this and things work out.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Well. Let me ask you then, DJ Dirkin, the interim
coach now press conference later today with the a D
There what other names are out there? You got Lane Kiffin.
Obviously some fans are saying, yeah, what about him? John
Sumrroll from Tulane, James Franklin, Jimbo Ashley. Yeah, Ashley, what
are you thinking?
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Well, you got the Dillingham they're talking about Arizona State.
You get the guy from Tulane summerw you got uh
you got you know, you got in Miszoo. Yeah. Yeah,
a funny guy, kind of a quirky guy. This is crazy.
I'm at public yesterday and a guy says it comes
up to me and he says, he goes, mane, you're
(06:41):
not gonna believe this, and goes, okay, you asked me
about Auburn because you're not going to believe this. I'm
here to tell you that Dabo Sweeney was at Auburn
last week. And I'm like, come on, you know, because
you hear everything, you know, and uh so it's that time.
It's that time of of year when the Auburn though
is all these other openings. I mean, they've got a competition, right,
(07:04):
you know in the Penn States. The Floorida is the
I mean it. So it's not like l SU. It's
le Brian Kellen thing. So it's not like you just
all of a sudden, you know, have Auburn looking for
a coach. Seemingly you've got everybody looking for a coach
and uh, and so that's that's going to be an
issue for Auburn as well, competition on the coaching front
(07:24):
as well. So we'll see, but I think they're looking
for a young, go getting coach like everybody is. And uh,
you know, we'll we'll see what can happen down there.
But like I said, we hope that that you know,
Auburn is is back to one very soon, and uh,
it can be relevant in the SEC championship races again.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
Well and with n I L and all the money
you needed to do it, and you got so much
money going out to coaches that they're still probably writing
checks to I think Chiswick just got his final check
last week, didn't he Is Tommy still getting the check too.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
I mean it's crazy and it's and it's in these
and I always say these college coaches are kind of
like baseball managers. You know, just when one is fired
or at least they pop up somewhere else, it's like
all of a sudden, you know, whoever Brian Kelly is,
you know next week he's going to be you know,
even more money.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Well, so.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
It's an interesting time for.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
You said it best, Rick, and I think you're right.
The Auburn fan base and the Auburn family deserves a
winning record, a better record. They are certainly loyal fans,
just like any big schools program, and they want, you know,
they want to win. I mean, it doesn't necessarily mean
you got to have a national championship, but you can't
lose to Kentucky ten to three at home in the
middle of the season. He just can't do that.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
No, you can't. And you go back to that old
Paddye line. And you know, many years ago he said,
you know, he said, you know, Alabama fans love Alabama football,
Auburn fans love Auburn and and you know, and of
course Bama fans would disagree with you that they don't
love Alabama as much. But the point is that the
(08:58):
coach died was making is that there's something special about Auburn,
and there's something special about an Auburn man and an
Auburn woman and an Auburn fan, and they, like you said,
they deserve to have that and to get that back
and continue with that in the future.
Speaker 1 (09:13):
I wish them the best and getting a good coach
and they let them be and do their job and
hire the staff they want and just let them be successful.
So Rick, I appreciate you, buddy, Thank God, thank you
for coming on with me, and we'll stay in touch
on this one for sure.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Well okay, hey, I vote you as coach man. You're
making a lot of sense this morning.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
All right, let's go me and you. I want you
as my OC then all right, if I'm going to
your coach all right, Thank you, Rick, I appreciate you.
