Speaker 1 (00:00):
As we get this Wednesday started, it's going to be
a little busy for the cardinals in the Vatican as
they have a real busy day today. Row and Neil
joins us now as the conclave gets started to elect
a new pope today. Welcome in, right, thanks for being here.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Hey there, JT, good morning. Yeah. They already had a
mess at the Vatican earlier today for the cardinals as
we speak, they took a break for lunch, a time
for reflection, and in about three hours, three hours and
fifteen minutes, they'll actually gather again, enter the Systine Chapel.
The doors will be sealed behind them, they'll be under
lock and key. That's where they call it a conclave

(00:37):
and they will remain there until they find a new pope.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
Well, we expect to vote at some point today, right,
they'll have at least one passing of a vote. I mean,
they're not going to debate and go back. And how
does the voting process actually work? I mean, is it
like a jury room where you have I mean, you've
got one hundred and thirty three cardinals in there, and
at some point, I mean, are they all heard, do

(01:03):
they debate, do they bring up pros and cons. And
then are they set on a clock as far as Okay,
we've discussed it for two hours, let's all vote now
and see what we think. And do they narrow it down?
I mean, how does the actual voting process start and
is there a timeline on when they have to vote
at least once?

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Yeah, so they have to vote at least twice a day,
and that's when we and the ballots are then burned.
That's where we get either the black smoke or the
white smoke. A pope is only elected if they get
two thirds of the votes. And as you said, there
are one hundred and thirty three cardinals who are eligible,
but there are more than two hundred and fifty who
are actually participating. You cannot be a voting cardinal if

(01:42):
you are over the age of eighty. So the others
can participate. They can help lobby for candidates. I guess
you'd say, but only one hundred and thirty three are
actually eligible to vote, and you'll need that two thirds
majority to be selected. It's up to that. It takes
about two hours for each vote to happen as they
go through the roll call there, so it does take

(02:04):
some time and Remember this is a group typically of
senior citizens, who go through this process meticulously, rather slowly,
and mostly in time of silence. There's not a whole
lot of chatter that goes on even between the votes.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
Wow. Interesting, So they just continue to pray about it.
And if they have a vote, is it a written
vote or is it a speaking vote? And somebody marks
each vote down.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Right, So each vote is written on a piece of paper,
it submitted, and then the cardinal will walk up put
it into a bowl essentially, then the vote is counted.
There's no name on the ballot, so we don't know
how each cardinal votes. But then a large needle with
a red thread is pierced through that vote. And then
as they're all strung up on that thread, it's that

(02:51):
thread of ballots that is then burned and that's where
we get the white smoke or the black smoke. Now
there are chemicals added to the stove there inside the
seat steam chapel, remember this is the famous Steine chapel
with the painting on the ceiling and the man and
the finger touching God, and it's that famous fresco on
the ceiling there. So it is done in an incredibly

(03:13):
elaborate and ornate room in a ceremony that goes back centuries.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
So interesting. And you mentioned, you know, the eighty year
old cutoff for being able to be a part of
the voting process. That doesn't necessarily mean that one of
the cardinals outside the room, that's eighty one could be
the one.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Well right, and so all of the cardinals are in
the room, but only the one hundred and thirty three
who are eligible to vote will cast about.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
Okay, that's what I mean. You know, if you don't
have a you could still be the next pope even
if you're not part of the voting process.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Actually, anyone JT. I could be the next pope as
a Catholic, So anyone actually could be the pope around
the world and a male, so it can be chosen
from anyone. But for the past few oh about a
millennium or so, it's been a member of College of Cardinals.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
All right, very good, let's talk about what's happening at
the airports this morning. Is I'm sure there's somebody in
an argument as we speak, going hey, wait a minute, now,
I thought I could bring you my pirth certificate and
power bill to get on this plane. There's only so
many certain things. But I was amazed. If you don't
have the star ID, the real ID yet you can
present a US Merchant marineer credential and get on board.

(04:24):
I mean, there's a list of a dozen different things
that you can show up with here. Do you have
your star ID?

Speaker 2 (04:30):
I do, and I think it's about fifteen different things
that are all make it accessible for you to get through.
And if you show up and you don't have real ID,
you can be subjected to extra screening. We heard from
Christy Nome saying that they're not going to turn people
away per se, but then subject them to extra screening.
So it could delay your time at the airport. So

(04:51):
don't show up with five minutes to spare and try
to get through without your real ID. You're going to
have to endure some extra screening in order to make
it on that plane. But you know a lot of
people are saying, oh, you know, my license renews in October.
I'm not flying before then, so I'll just get it
done then. And that's a perfectly natural and logical way

(05:11):
to do things. If you need to fly immediately, you
can use your passport or your passport card. That's also
an option out there, So plenty of other ways to
get on that plane. If you don't have the real ID.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
You can also use a Veteran Health Identification card and
here's a doozy for you. A permanent resident card will work,
or a border crossing card. Did you know we're handing
these things out?

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Well, those are for people, say, who work in Canada
and they'll work in Detroit and they'll go over back
to windsor so you can have cards that get you access.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
The point, not the illegal gang members. Those border crossing
cross won't work.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
No, not that guy.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
Yeah, okay, I got you. Well. And also if you
don't have the idea and you're not flying for a
while at some point, roy though they're expecting everybody. Even
if you never fly the rest of your life, you
still have to get this star ID, the red you
know ID, the real ID at some point.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Right, you're the perfect example because Alabama law may have
allowed your driver's license to say JT, but now that
the federal law is in place, you're going to have
to put your full name on there. And that is
standardized because some states would allow JT, others would not,
and it's sort of getting all those names, the full
name on there, making sure the address is actually where

(06:24):
you live, trying to get verify some of that information
to make it a real id Very good.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
All right, Rory, thank you so much for the update.
I appreciate you
