Speaker 1 (00:00):
The hurricane Melissa has landed on Jamaica and it is
just extremely bad there. The Jamaican Prime Minister talking about
the damage.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
The hurricane hit the southwestern end of the island and
cross the island going northwards and there should be now
leaving the island, but behind it is a trillions.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
In the corridor.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
Too early obviously to assess the damage, but it's a
horrific situation there. Our correspondent, Royal O Neil has been
following this all morning long. Good morning, We're welcome in.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Jt Good morning. You know, there are suns starting to
come up. The damage assessments really will start to get
under way today now the conditions are improving, but you know,
some of the top priorities, of course, are going to
be identifying people who are in immediate danger right now,
getting rescue teams out to people. Then looking at the
road conditions, the airports, the electric grid, so much of

(00:56):
the infrastructure has certainly either been damaged or destroyed by
this slow moving storm that made landfall with winds of
one hundred and eighty five miles per hour unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
They're calling it some of the strongest storm ever to
hit Jamaica here a century, a storm of the century
for this area here. One point five million people on
the island could be affected by this. I just can't imagine.
And I was thinking about those folks, some Americans as well,
that were there, and then it was too late to
get out, and the notice came that the hurricane is

(01:30):
right behind this and it's coming our way, and your
traps sitting there on the island and you just have
to hunker down and deal with it. I mean, it's
just the devastation on the amount of wind like this
is insurmountable. And yeah, I would imagine the death toll
is going to be pretty steep in this. But six

(01:52):
hundred thousand people have been evacuated from Cube already. It
seems that's the next spot where we're going to go
see this thing make landfall. But well, has it calmed
down at all heading towards Cuba.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
It has. So the storm made landfall in Cuba around
three ten am Cuba time as a Cat three hurricane wins.
We're one eighty five there now down to one point fifteen.
The other good number here is that the forward speed
has picked up. You know, when this thing made landfall
it was moving at only about five miles per hour.
Now it's up to twelve and is it expected to

(02:24):
even pick up even more speed as it moves toward
the Bahamas today and then toward Bermuda perhaps sometime tomorrow.
So this is starting to pull away. It's weakening as
it pulls away. But we really don't have any idea
as to the scope and scale of the damage yet.
In Jamaica, their whole thing that maybe commercial airline flights

(02:46):
can resume starting tomorrow, that maybe relief supplies can start
to come in, that the evacuees can try to get out.
But this is a very complicated recovery process because you're
dealing with an island that really can't preposition supplies like
we do here in the South. You know, when we're
threatened by a storm, you know, we've got powered trucks
and electric crews coming in from Colorado to help us

(03:08):
out days in advance. That's not really an option in Jamaica.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
But the Prime Minister there in Jamaica did say that
the United States is committed to aiding and bringing what's
needed when that can be done. All right, let's switch
some gears here. Gaza ceasefire, not so much as first
of all Hamas violated it and then Israel has responded.
In this whole situation, I thought we were moving in
the right direction here, but apparently not.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Well, maybe this is a blip, or you know, the
path to piece isn't necessarily a straight line. I guess
there's one way to look at it. Yes, the Hamas
attacked the Israeli forces. Israel responded with strikes that Hamas
has killed more than ninety people in Gaza. But both
sides are going back to their corners, I guess to
use fighting terms, and now claiming that the ceasefire is

(03:54):
back in place. So you know, let's see if let's
hope that this was just an anomaly. But I can
tell you is railers are getting very frustrated that the bodies,
the remains of the thirteen other hostages have not been
turned over yet, that they accuse himas of dragging out
this process. Hamas says, look, we can't reach the remains
where they are, so that back and forth continues, and

(04:16):
that may be the heart of the frustration here.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
I just pictured Donald Trump looking in the backseat and
you calm down, don't make me turn this car around.
I will come back there, you know, so hopefully this
thing will get back on track and stay there. It's,
you know, once again volatile through the entire thing. We
saw it with Russian Ukraine and that's still a mess
as well. All Right, thank you so much. I appreciate you.
