Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us now is doctor Cheryl Jackson. Faith led, purpose fueled,
and action driven. Cheryl Jackson's heavy into the food world
to talk about what's happening with the potential of SNAP
closing the doors here any day now. At the end
of the month, the funds will have run out. Cheryl,
welcome in. Thanks for being here.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Good morning, JT. Thank you for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
I'm glad to talk with you here now. As we know,
the politicians can't seem to come together and get anything
done up there on this, and a lot of folks
are going to be faced with do I pay the
power bill? Do I go get my kids some food?
We talked with a leader of a food bank in
North Alabama this morning on what people can do in
our own communities here. But with SNAP getting ready to

(00:42):
shut down, we're talking forty two million Americans being affected
by this. Where do you see all of this going
and what's going to actually.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Happen on JT. First of all, thanks for knowing what's
happening and educating your listeners because it's frightening. I'm on
the front line everyday, single day. I do this, I've
done and for almost two decades, I do it. Because
it used to be me in that line needing a
meal and SNAP and you know, we're living in unprecedented times.

(01:11):
I've never seen the fear in American eyes like I
see them today, from the grandmothers who are feeding their grandchildren.
You know, we go into their houses and they have
this is before SNAP was shut down. They had empty
dog and cat food cans, but they didn't have animals.
And we started providing meals for them, and we subsidize

(01:33):
for them. With them receiving SNAP, what will happen to them?
What would happen to the veterans that stand before me
and say I was willing to die for my country
and even you, ma'am, and now I can't get a meal.
What's going to happen to these people? You know, we
have a list we feed up to twenty thousand people.
We're in Texas As, you know, we feed up to

(01:53):
twenty thousand people every single month. And these people are frightened.
Before SNAP benefit were taken away. We look into the
eyes of the workers, the federal workers, who are saying,
you know, they're telling us to work, We're not even
getting paid, and now you know they can't even apply
for government benefits because the government benefits of being shut down.

(02:16):
I have never seen anything like this because during the
COVID times, we opened up our pantry seven days a
week and we did that almost a year and a half.
That was something that was something we couldn't control. This
is something that people can't control and we're not controlling it.
And this right here is not about politics. Our politicians

(02:38):
need to understand. This is about people. This is about mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers,
a handicapped, the veterans, you name them. They are going
to be without. And we know JT that every American
deserves a meal. We know this, how will they get one?
I will say this to you that when you talk
about food pants and food banks, for every one meal
that a food painter of food bank supplies, the snap

(03:01):
benefits provided nine meals are one. None of us are
conditioned or prepared for what is about to happen in
this country, even as a food bank or food pantry.
I've done this for two decades. Like I said, I'm
a concerned. I'm concerned and I pray more than I've
ever prayed before because I don't know what's going to happen. Well,

(03:24):
what I can tell you go ahead.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
No, I was just going to say, you mentioned you
pray about this, and I'm one hundred percent with you there,
and the Lord does provide and talks about it. Yeah.
In scripture, you know, I take care of the fish
and the sea and the birds in the air. What
makes you think I'm not going to take care of you?
And I'm paraphrasing, but you know, I'm all about faith.
I'm all about how our communities in Texas and certainly
here in Alabama across this country, when we're hit with

(03:47):
devastation like storms and tornadoes or hurricanes along the coast
and power goes down, homes are destroyed, communities pull together
and they support. And I think this is going to
be a big you know, God's going to be glorified
of this some way, somehow. God will be glorified in this,
you know, at the end of the day. And it
may get us all up off our butts, you know,

(04:08):
as far as oh, well, they'll be taken care of
the government's got them. Oh that person down the road there,
they'll take care of that family over there that needs it.
I don't know. I think we all need to get
up and get involved in the set and this go around.
That's it.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
This is really that. Am I my brother's keeper? Yes?

Speaker 1 (04:24):
I am.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
Kind of moment in American history, that's what this is. Yes,
you're correct. God is always taken care of us. But
even some of the things that are happening now, we
could take care of ourselves. A government could could help
people if they would just say, yes, let's just go
ahead and give them this money. Right now, I don't
understand it, and so I'm saying I'm praying because I'm

(04:47):
just saying that if it continues too long, like this
government shut down, along with snap benefits being taken away,
you know, you can look on social media and people
are threatening I've got to feed my kids. That there
I was that mother one working for jobs, So what
are they going to do? And people can do some
irrational things when they can't go without food, and a

(05:08):
hungry kid they can't learn, they won't learn. And so
imagine a mother just thinking where am I going to
get my next meal from? And those are the calls
that I'm getting every day.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
JT.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
That's what I'm getting every day and tomorrow. At our picture,
I mean, we've invited in some of the families. They've
got almost one hundred families coming into our food pantry
to talk to me about what is going to happen
in their households, and so I can see how we
can help them. You know, I don't have the answers.
I just know that together we can have the answers,

(05:39):
and I'm.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
Going to try to get some. I'm in well. I
appreciate you, doctor Cheryl Jackson. Thank you for sharing your story,
and thank you for coming on. And yeah, it's going
to take some action from all of us that we
don't normally get involved with. But you know, you heard
about the TSA agents, you hear about the air traffic controllers.
You know there's I mentioned this and then all this started.

(06:01):
The ripple effect is going to affect a bunch of
us and probably all of us if this continues much longer.
And here we go with forty two million Americans across
the country depending on the SNAP program. This has got
everybody's attention more than anything so far during the shutdown.
So I'm going to pray about this ending the shutdown
by the weekend and we get back on track and
get moving, and also praying for those that are going

(06:24):
to be in need and that all of us kind
of do something in the meantime in our own neighborhoods.
Thank you, doctor Cheryl Jackson. I appreciate you.
