Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, it broke out on Saturday that the United States
had bombed Iran, taking out three of their nuclear sites,
a precise mission carried out with the utmost secrecy. But
as soon as it broke, it broke everywhere, social media included,
and a lot of kids sitting there with their phones
all of a sudden, probably getting all kinds of bombardment
news stories about the United States going to war, we

(00:22):
bombed Iran. That's got to freak young people out. I
would think joining us now to talk a little bit
more about that, doctor Dean Beckloff, who has extensive experience
working with kids and teens in this arena, doctor, welcome in,
thanks for being here.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Hey, good to be back with you again.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
You know, we talked about the impact on keen kids
rather in teens during COVID and what it did to
them emotionally and withdrew them from the classroom and depression
set in. You know, with social media out there and
so many young people are on this, of course, it's
probably something that we need to really look at even

(00:58):
more because the phones are fuse to their hands, but
when they get big news like this, it gets scary.
I would imagine what happens.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Yeah, I mean they're exposed to as you were just saying,
to a lot. I mean, you know, it's a it's
a continuous feed, and that feed just brings about more
and more anxiety like any of us adults too. Uh.
One one writer talked about the great rewiring of childhood

(01:28):
and we went from play based childhood to phone based childhood,
which is scary to think about. However, now, you know,
we just had the news that that teams are becoming
much more aware of the dangers of social media, which
is one of the things that I kind of felt
what happened that once our teenagers began getting more facts

(01:49):
and more information, that they would start realizing, you know,
the trap that can be there with social media.

Speaker 1 (01:57):
It is the wild wild West out there, and you
never know what kind of bad things are coming at
you on the phones. Adults included, as you said, but
with teenagers, how do they process that barrage of anxiety
news and something like a war an attack.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
Well, and it's too much, you know, uh, And and
you know you're you're you're making a very good point.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
You know.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Adults at least have had a range of experiences to
kind of try to put it in its place. But
kids haven't. They just haven't, and so what does that
do to them while they're being pummeled. But you know,
we're learning a lot. We're learning a lot. We're learning
a lot about the anxious generation is Jonathan hat called

(02:44):
it uh in terms of you know, our kids and
what's what he calls the great rewiring, and we're learning
how to handle it. Part of it is getting information
out to teenagers to help them realize just that they're
highly influenced. They just are. We all are.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Yeah, Well, when you see the barrage of the nastiness
coming at them, as you said, they're becoming more aware
of it and learning how to deal with it. What
would you say to you know, the folks that have
the big you know, the phone companies Apple and Samsung
and you know, Verizon and all these different people that
have the platforms out there on how to kind of

(03:23):
curtail the bad stuff and build the algorithms to you know,
pull back on some of this garbage that goes to
young people.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah, you're so right, And you know, of course they're
trying to do things on the legal front to get
some changes happening. As you well know too, that's all
been in the news about trying to get these people
to stop their algorithms. However, you know, they're not really
out to harm the youth. They're simply wanting to sell

(03:54):
their product. However, it's creating great problems in our youth
and they're vulnerable. They just are. They haven't been around
very long, like you said, they're not adults, and they're
being bombarded with it. And now obviously it's a scary
time for all of us. You know, we hear about

(04:15):
bondings going on and it puts all of us on
a little bit of a high alert.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Well, doctor Dean Beckloff, I sure to appreciate you thanks
for your inside this morning.
