Speaker 1 (00:00):
Glad to have Tim Lawson in the studio, whether it's
he's a Hoover Battalion fire chief, but he also is
the executive director of an organization called Manufacture Good.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Tim welcome in. Good to see you. Hey, thanks for
having me.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
Jays and I did not realize that you're basically a
seven iron away from my driveway.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
I am, We're right up to the weird neighbors. That's
part so, and I said, what vehicle do you drive us?
Did you get that two fifty truck on?

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Make?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Is that that the That's not you, that's not me,
that's somebody else.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Yeah, there's there's there's a couple of different diesel trucks
around set.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
And you're not the guy that's driving that little uh
souped up hot rod, Honda Civic or anything.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
What is that vehicle? I'm not sure. I think it's a.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
It's like, what are you doing in our neighbor? This
is the neighborhood? Calm down, Yeah, anyway, good to see you.
So I want to hear about Manufacture Good. It's downtown.
What is Manufacturing Good. It's just like RCS and Hoover
at the School for Trades and things like.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
That we're similar, but we're we're We're a men's ministry.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
That's what we do.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
We build and ben So we bring in young men
from all over the city of Birmingham. Whether they're stuck
in a rut, they're they're coming out of the justice system,
they're coming out of addiction, it doesn't matter.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
We don't judge that.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
We bring those guys in for basically a twelve week
boot boot camp style training. They come in and they
learn first and foremost the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We
believe that men who are rooted in the scriptures are
good men. They're good fathers, they're good husbands. So we
bring them in. We teach that, we pray together, we
read the scriptures every day, and then we teach them
things that will make them valuable in the workplace. So

(01:30):
we teach them things like how to hook up a
trailer to a truck, how to how to run solid safety.
They get OSHA ten certified, CPR certified, they get forklifts certified,
They learn how to drive a skid steer. They learned
about hydraulics, I mean, you name it, they get.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
To learn it, and we have them looking to try
and say a back ho out and give it a run. Yeah,
and you know I've got a spot in my backyard.
I really need some help.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
Yeah, these guys are going to all kinds we have.
That's the other amazing part of what we do. These
guys all get really amazing jobs can out of our program.
So we have partners like Marathon Electric, Father, Nature, Landscape,
you name it. There's companies all over the city of
Birmingham that love to hire our people.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Because they've been trained up right, and how long does
the process last for a guy?

Speaker 3 (02:13):
So they start with us, they go twelve weeks run.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
We run four classes per year.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Okay, and they come through, they go through twelve week program,
but they never really leave. These guys become our family,
their brother We've created a brotherhood and so they have
my number I still talk to.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
I can't even tell you.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
One of our graduates, our first graduate, his name is
quin Darius Johnson. He just graduated from the Birmingham Police Academy.
So he's a Birmingham Police officer.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
How about that.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
So yeah, it was super exciting to get to see him. So, yeah,
we're doing amazing things.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
I think that. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Yeah, are the people that all the people coming through
you mentioned, are they challenged in different ways and been
through tough times or yeah, some of them just unemployed.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
Some of them, yeah, we call it stuck in a rut.
But yeah, there's They come from all walks of life.
So people come to us their bartender and they just
want to learn a skill. Some people come to us
they've just left the justice system or they have a
potential of going into it, so they're going to do
some time somewhere.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
We don't really judge any of that.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
We bring them in and we've had guys that have
committed armed robbery, we've had guys that have not, and
we don't.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Really look at that.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
We look at how can we build this man where
he is a valuable member of our community. So what
we're doing is trying to change Birmingham for the better,
one man at a time, and we believe.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
You know, they talk about rehabilitation in jails, and you
know this is something that they try and do somewhat
in prisons and whatnot, but this sounds like something a
little more directed towards specifics in getting people placed and
you know, a mapped out plan as opposed to well,
here learn how to do this or that, and good
luck when you get out of jail, you actually help

(03:41):
place people as well after the training.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Right.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
We believe that the idle hands in our city is
part of the issue. So if we can train them
in to fish, then he can be a fisherman.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Right. So we're training these guys.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Up with valuable skills, both those interpersonal skills that are
going to make them successful, the faith which we believe
holds it all together, and then those hands on skills
that are really going to give them the opportunity to
go out into the workplace and make a huge difference.
And what we challenge these guys to don't just go
into the workplace and make a difference, serve your community
with these skills, help the elderly lady next door.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Pick up trash in your community.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Go make a difference, because we believe that better men
equals better homes and better.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Community one hundred percent. So talk to me about some
of the staff members you have for volunteers you have
that let work.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
With these guys.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Yeah, so we have a staff, a small staff of six.
We're nonprofit, so we are we are We do seek
funding through donations. So if you're out there listening, please help.
We love that Manufactured Good dot org our is our website.
But yeah, our staff is amazing. We have people that
come in every single day with the express intent of
just making these men better. So we have a couple

(04:44):
of us in the office and then there's four guys
in the shop. We build amazing furniture. If you've ate
at a restaurant in Birmingham, Taco Mama Helen just to
name a few, you've sat at our tables. These young
men come in and they get the opportunity to build
some very nice furniture for companies like Brassfield Gory. I mean,
it's just amazing the people that we get to serve
in our city, and they believe in us, and it

(05:04):
gives us the opportunity to get to do the training
that we get to do.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
All right, was some of the stuff that guys make,
furniture and things like this, do you guys make that
available for sale to the public or do you work
with organizations and businesses? If I needed a table, for instance,
are they there? We can come, you know, the public
can come see what you're doing there and say, well,
I'd love to give you a couple hundred bucks for
that or work right.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
We do have a few tables that are that are
in shop, but most everything we do is customs.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
So we build a custom tables.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
So if you said I want a dining room table,
we come out measure work with you on a species,
a stained color. We work with designers all over the
city of Birmingham. So most of what we do is
custom tables, custom desk, custom cabinetry, and then we sell firewood.
That's the big push right now is our full Stackfirewood
dot Com is our website and you go on there.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
We make it easy, you buy.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
It, we deliver it to your house, we stack it.
Our communication is all part of the training. So it's
teaching these customer service delivery how to load a trailer.
We teach them how to back up a trailer. How
many girl men in the city of Birmingham we love
to come and have our I could use that skill.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
I know it will work on that one myself. That's right.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
So we have an amazing opportunity with the firewood and
the furniture to give these guys an opportunity to be successfu.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
Well man, that is great work and I'm glad to
hear about it. Where are you located and how can
people help as far as you know, funding and donations
to you know, keep this ministry going. But also you
know what if they want to come by and visit
and see and maybe help you do some physical Hey,
I can offer some skills.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
I've got to help these guys. How do people get involved?

Speaker 3 (06:30):
Yeah, So we're located at nine twenty five twenty eighth
Street in Ords. If you've ever seen the building downtown
that has the star David on the top of the building,
that is our building.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Ok.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Yes, it's owned by the Kathy Brothers, two amazing men
that have been super generous with us, right next door
to Crane Works. Our website is manufactured Good dot org
and full Stackfirewood dot com. That is where you get us.
That's how you get custom furniture. That's how you get
to opportunities to come and volunteer with us, do to
shop tours and just meet the meet the guys.

Speaker 2 (06:57):
Hey.

Speaker 3 (06:57):
We have twenty five speakers that come and speak to
our men every twelve weeks. If you have something that
you would love to share with these young men, you
would like to invest in your community, give me a call.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
Reach out to me through the website. Come speak to
these guys.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
We want people to come and pour into these men,
just like I get the opportunity to do every day.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
Well.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
Manufacture Good dot org is the website. Get all the
information you need there. And yeah, if you can be
a part of this anyway financially or offer some of
your goods and services for them to be able to
help these men, and you work with women too, come
through this program.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Is it's amazing, it's actually it's actually a men's ministry.
We have one woman in our organization. She's great and Sarah,
so she keeps us all in line.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Ready to go, Sarah, Yeah, all right, we're all we're
all for the men.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
All right, Very good and once again, Manufacture Good dot org.
That's Tim Lawson Itttalion chief and Hoover and also the
executive director of this incredible ministry.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
