Speaker 1 (00:00):
Alabama's Morning News. I'm JT and joining us now from
UAB Medical West. Doctor Matthew Reid is in the studio
with us. Welcome doctor, good to see him.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
So you're one of the ace surgeons they have over
there and call your good things about you. So, how
long have you been with them?
Speaker 2 (00:14):
I've been at Medical West for thirteen years as part
of what was originally a private practice group, and we
recently became hospital employed in the last year and a half.
So we love it. It's a family community kind of feel.
And you're from Alabama, right I am. I'm from the Enterprise.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
Yeah, you and your wife live out in the Hoover area. Now,
she's from Chelsea exactly. That's ex awesome.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
She told me a long time ago that if I
wanted to go back to Enterprise, I was going by myself.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
We'll good for her. We're glad to have you. Now,
this hospital, we're on the one year anniversary since it
opened up. And what an incredible, state of the art
hospital this is.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah, it's incredible. It's a beautiful facility of the art everything.
We'll get to the robot later, but we are truly
into the twenty first century in every aspect.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
I love the aesthetics of the comfort and the focus
on wellness, healing, the walking trails outside and when you
look out of every window, it's like an incredible million
dollar view of nature. And you know that's got to
be a plus for patients. Oh.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Absolutely, you really don't feel like you're in the hospital.
You feel like you're more in a hotel.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Yeah. Yeah, and inside as well, I mean absolute ever
designed all the layouts with the artwork and things like that,
absolutely gorgeous. So all right, you mentioned the robotic surgery.
There are what twelve O r's there now, I believe.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
We have twelve our rooms. They're all multipurpose, can do
any type of procedure in any room. We do have
two of the Divinci five robots. As far as I know,
we're the only hospital in the area to have exclusively
only the newest version of the robot, so we're really
(02:00):
proud of that.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Well, let's talk about that. You do general surgery on
almost all parts of the body unless it starts to
getting into brain surgeries and you know, shoulder replacements and
things like that. But right, you know, you do hernias
and you know, gallbladders and things like this, So talk
to folks about how these robotics work in surgery and
how much of a benefit is to have them.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, so it is still it's in the process of
revolutionizing surgery procedures as simple as just just a gall
bladder that will be done laparoscopic this year, maybe next year. Nationwide,
more will be done robotically than laparoscopically. You can do
(02:45):
the operation under less insufflation pressure. You have to expand
the ad in with CO two gas to be able
to see. You can do it under much less pressure.
The robot senses the amount of pressure that is being
placed on the abdominal wall and alleviates that, which in
turn leads to less pain afterwards. Right, more precise procedure
(03:08):
harning a repair in particular, I found just a huge
advantage to the robot. Instead of having a large incision
with drains, maybe a two or three day hospital stay
for pain control, patients are having a same day surgery
with no drains and having equal outcomes. So yeah, it
(03:28):
really is phenomenal. I mean the hospital itself being one
year old, it certainly has grown. I understand they're having
some parking issues with so many expansions going on, you
know why Medical West UAB Medical West to McCullough. If
you're listening or you're a patient considering you know, surgery,
or you know having to go into the hospital, why
would you tell somebody if they're sitting right there at
(03:51):
lunch with you, why you should choose this hospital over
others in the air. Yeah, I've kind of touched on
it before, but first and foremost just the community family
kind of feel. You know, you are special in that
it's very individualized treatment. You're not just another number or
another patient. It truly is a family. And now that
(04:14):
we have the new hospital and state of the art everything,
I think you'll find that it's a extremely pleasing environment
to be in while also giving the best state of
the art treatment that you can receive.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Yeah. I like to see that the staff is really
growing and some of the people that are are there
in surgery as well as the nursing staff and the
support staff in the hospital some of the best I've
ever seen. And you know, we've been through the hospital
the number of times and use a Medical West freestanding
emergency room over there, and Hoover absolutely routes and I
mean every time we go into the facility, I mean
(04:52):
our family is treated, you know, like we're part of
that family, you know. So I like the customer service.
If you will to the hospital, if you look at
surgeons and go, wow, that can great customer service.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
I've used the facility for multiple family members, recently used
it for myself. I had an appendectomy that one of
my partners did, came down with appendicitis a few weeks ago. Wow,
had just a phenomenal experience.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
It looks like you're doing well. Do the robot thing
on your appendix.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Now. It was after hours and my partner that doesn't
do robotics.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Side job we did in the garage at home.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
That's all right. My partner that doesn't do a robotic
surgery was the only other person in town that weekend,
and he did a phenomenal job laproscopic.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
That's great. It was illing well. So there's a big
event coming up later today. Yes, at the hospital. What's
this all about.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
It's kind of an opportunity for the community to come
in and see the robot. Kind of a lot of
people just really have absolutely no clue what a surgical
robot is, so they can come in and meet the
providers and see the robot and actually get on it
and and kind of you know, play if you will
(06:02):
themselves to kind of get a field, get a little
better idea of what it's all about.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
So that's ten o'clock this morning till two o'clock this afternoon.
Public's invited to come on out and enjoined TOECH Hospital
in this robotics.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Yeah, come join us.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Well, that's pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
At different points in the day. I'll be down there.
I know my partner John Isis we'll be down there
as well. So we'd love to see you.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
All right you ab Medical West exit one off I
four fifty nine there in McCullough. You will absolutely love
this hospital. Doctor Matthew Reied, thank you for being with us.
I appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Thank you very much for having me
