Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us now is Heather Lyle, a workplace expert, to
talk about what's going on now with something called quiet cracking. Heather,
welcome in. Thanks for being here.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Hey, thanks for having me. I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Look, here's I see these articles and stories all the
time about how today's workplace is just so tough for
young people and they just they just can't deal with
it and they just burnt out. If you're in your twenties,
there's no such word as burnout. I don't want to
hear it. Forget about it. I'm in my mid sixties.

(00:33):
I get up at three point thirty every morning. I
come to work in my mid sixties. You're not old
enough to be burnt out yet.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Enough of this, ohh you know there is some truth
in that how things were when you and I first
started working, and how things are now, especially post pandemic.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
With everything being zoom and virtual communication. We've lost the
human touch a little bit.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Hold on, hold on, hold on, I'm hearing something in
the background. We oh, it's the ambulance here. It's arrived,
all right, so's yeah, yeah, Well.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
The big deal is is that we've everything has moved
to zoom and teams, and we've lost the human touch
and people really do craze the human connection, having a
real conversation, going to lunch with somebody, actually having that
face to face contact, and so much of that is lost,
especially post pandemic. So you're seeing a lot of people,

(01:35):
not just gen zers, but just in general. Can't tell
you how many people I talk to who are gen
xers who are like, oh my gosh, I just want
to be able to have the conversation with someone and
it's not happening. And so that's where this whole concept
of quiet cracking and burnout. Yeah, that's where that comes from.
Is that people really do feel, you know, unappreciated, not valued,

(01:56):
and that really ties into they're just not having conversations
with people in the workplace.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Yeah, so what are employers doing to coddle I mean,
to a common I mean to work with these young
people to make sure that they're going to be okay.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Well, and again it's not just young people as well too.
Lots of folks that I work with and help coach
are in their late forties, fifties that kind of thing too.
And it's just this is becoming a big problem. Whereas
we've replaced all human connection with zoom and teams and
slack messaging and all the digital products that are out

(02:32):
there that are helpful. But at the end of the day,
we've got to be intentional with our time and connect
with people on a human level.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Well, I think the boss ought to open up with
their crew this morning with a little ditty from Diana Ross.
There you go, start your day off with a little
touch screen and maybe everybody back in the office a
big group hug as we get started. Can we have
all twenty year old step forward please? And those of

(02:59):
you feeling like you're burned out and you're cracking up?
All right? So do you think we're back on track
with us? I know COVID really messed everybody up. Are
we making progress? Are we making progress in the right
direction here? And what should a boss do if he's
listening right now?

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, if I were to give anybody, the boss people
a word of advice, have some face to face conversations
with your people. That will help a lot. That will
help significantly. Talk to people, have conversations, take somebody out
to lunch, like, let's get back to some human connection. Yeah,
that will dramatically help things.

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Yeah, it's like that commercial see at the conference table
where everybody's like, yeah, we'll just you know, overnight the
package to him. We'll just do a little meeting on
the computer and the bosses. Now we're going to see people.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
I like that. Ye, people like to have the face
to face they do and we've.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Lost that post pandemic one hundred percent. I'm with you.
I'm just teasing kind of
