Speaker 1 (00:09):
It says the Uncle Henry Show here on News Radio
seven ten WNTM. News headlines coming up. In ten minutes.
Before we get to the news headlines, we've got Ben
Cummings on the telephone with us. He is going to
talk to us about an event coming up this Saturday.
There's so much going on on the Gulf Coast this Saturday,
and one of the fun things you can do this
(00:29):
weekend is go see the British Car Festival. Ben, how
many years have you been involved in the British Car Festival.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Well, I have loved British cars my whole life, but
involved in the festival about maybe eight or nine years.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Okay, well that's a while, eight or nine years.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
So this is our thirty fifth annual British Car Festival.
The festival started in nineteen ninety when the club, the
South Alabama British Car Club was founded. We had a
festival the first year and we've had a festival every
year since then. So our thirty fifth anniversaries.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Okay, wow, okay, well congratulations on that thirty fifth anniversary
the British British Car Festival. So, first of all, where
is this going to happen? This Saturday.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
So it's this Saturday, that's October eighteenth. It's in fair
Hope on Section Street at the fair Hope United Methodist Church.
It starts at nine o'clock, nine o'clock till three o'clock
and it is free, free to the public. Just come
out and just see the cars.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
So tell us what kind of cars. I know they're
all British, of course, but what type of British cars
are you going to have there for people to look at?
Speaker 2 (01:49):
So all types of British cars, new and old. You know,
some of the British car names that people might be
familiar with is you know, the MG and the Triumph
and the Austin Healy. But you know, of course there'll
be some McLaren's, uh, some Sunbeam Tigers. But our feature
(02:12):
car this year is the Morgan. And the Morgan is
you know, it's a small British car company that is
still thriving today. So you can buy a brand new Morgan.
But Morgan has been around, gosh a long time. They
they they even had a very quirky car. It was
a three wheeled Morgan and we hope to have a
(02:34):
couple of those three three wheeld Morgans at our show.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Okay, Now, when I asked you what type of cars
we're going to be there, the first that you mentioned
was was MG's. Now, aren't those the most popular British
car in the United States, Because that's the first thing
that pops in my mind when somebody says British car,
I think MG.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Yes, yes, the MG. It was the most popular British car.
The United States was the market for MG's. They sold
a lot more MG's here in the United States than
they did in Great Britain. They you know, a couple
of years ago, we celebrated the one hundredth anniversary of MG.
(03:21):
It was founded in nineteen twenty three, and we had
all kinds of MG's, MGA's, mgb's, mgtds, lots of cars
and a very very old, almost original MG at that
festival a couple of years ago. Hopefully we'll have that
car again.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
Hey, you mentioned just a few moments ago that you've
been in love with British cars since you were a teenager.
What was your first British car?
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Well, it was actually my wife bought a British car.
She bought an MGBGT, which is a hard top, and
maybe that's why I married her. Uh so Uh. We
she bought that car before we were married, and I
seemed to drive it more than she did and so
(04:16):
uh and actually we still have that car today.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Okay. For people that have not driven an m GB
hard Tom, what's it like? What?
Speaker 2 (04:24):
What?
Speaker 1 (04:25):
What was that car like?
Speaker 2 (04:27):
So it's a it's a two seater. Uh, you know,
stick shift of course, uh small uh and you have
very fun to drive. You know, it's very peppy. You
know you can uh uh you know. Gosh, I don't
know anybody who hasn't driven a stick shifty. They are
certainly missing out. The driving a stick shift cars is
(04:50):
so much fun. And these little British cars, uh, they're
they're very light and fast going.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Okay, So this is going on from No. Nine to
three Saturday in fair Hope at a And it's the
Methodist Church. Is that where it's going to be there?
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Yes, it's the Methodist Church. I believe it's the corner
of Section Street and Morphy Avenue.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Now is there anything going on around your festival other
than looking at cars?
Speaker 2 (05:19):
So we have a lot of activities, activities for young
kids and old kids. The young kids, we have a
a match Box car track where they can race their
cars and they'll be gifted a car. And then the
older kids, the adults that are still kids, they we
(05:42):
will have a valve cover race. That's making a vehicle
out of the valve cover. It's the top part of
the engine and we will race those. And then of
course you know there's food truck and snow cones and drinks. Wow,
lots of lots of things to do at our festival.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
All right, So is there anywhere people can go online
to get info on this?
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yes, we have a website and a Facebook page. The
website is SABCC dot org and then our Facebook page
is Friends of South Alabama British Car Club. Information is
available on both the Facebook and the website and if
(06:28):
someone is interested in entering registering their car, they could
download a registration form off the website.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Very good, Ben Cummings, have a great time at your
British Car Festival this weekend in Fairhoe.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
