Speaker 1 (00:09):
Since the Uncle Henry Show here on news Radio seven
ten WNTM. And next week, a week from today, it's
time for Greek Fest and mobile with the Annunciation Greek
Orthodox Church, and we've got Jackie here to talk about
Greek Fest.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Jackie, thanks for coming.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
In, Thank you for having me.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Now, I just find out.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
Before I just found out before we started talking, that
you've been involved in Greek Fest just about your entire life.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
You grew up in the church.

Speaker 3 (00:35):
I sure did, that's right. My brother and I were
part of the preparations even as children for Greek Fest.
We would go down with my grandparents to prepare, help
prepare pastries and get everything ready for the festival.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
So this your entire life.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
Have there been big changes through the years to Greek
Fest or is it still very much the same as
it was when you were a kid.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
I think a lot the core things about Greek Fest,
with the food is probably close to the same. I
would say we've grown now as the community has grown
with what we offer. As far as the shopping, you
can go there to the Greek market and buy Greek foods,
or you can visit a vendor who might have some

(01:17):
jewelry or something to buy a Greek Fest, and of
course we have the dancing and the music and all
the delicious food.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Okay, we're going to talk about all that. I would
notice I've noticed one thing that's changed though through the years.
This is cashless. That's right, you accept no cash. This
is a debit card, credit card.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
Yes, I would say a few years ago we were
only cash and now opposite, we're cash less, right, so
make sure you bring a debtter credit card.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
Okay, So let's start out. For people that have never
been to Greek Fest. Tell people where to find the
Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church where this happens.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
It's downtown mobile on South and Stream.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
Eat okay, South Ann Street. Now do most people come
and just get the food to go?

Speaker 3 (02:08):
You can and that the takeout tent is on the
corner of Azalea and Ann and you can walk up
drive through, and of course all the food and sandwiches
and pastries are available out there. And we would like
you to support Greek Fest no matter what. If it's
to take out, but we would also love for you
to come in and enjoy the culture. Of course, we

(02:28):
also have church tours, so you can come in and
see our beautiful church.

Speaker 2 (02:33):
Let's talk about this just a moment.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Because I've gone to Greek Fest for so many years
living in Mobile, enjoyed the food every year. I've never
stopped and gone in and experienced in the culture in
all these years. So if I were to do that
next week, what would I see? What is there to do?

Speaker 3 (02:53):
So of course you would see dancing. We have our
children dancing as well as adults. We have several little
tents with shops up. Of course you have the pastry
line where we have the traditional past pastries by Cla
Vai Kudambiavi's Melama Kurd and I we also have specialty
pastries and then of course you can come in and

(03:15):
get your dinner plate and everything inside and then outside
in the tent is where the band will be where
you will experience the dancers. Also out there we have
the sandwiches of course, the yiddle, the souvlaki, Greek fries Colamadia,
and then also outside we have the beer and wine.

(03:38):
And if if you have time, there is a homemade
dessert called loko matha local Mahti's and they are like honeypuffs,
so they are made to order and you eat them warm,
just like you would have been the a okay, or
if you saw a hot donut sign on now. But
it has their their little fried puffs and then they

(03:59):
have honey syrup on it with cinnamon and they're delicious.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Please say it, pronounce it again.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
Loucal mightis lookal mightis some.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Musical sounding language, isn't it?

Speaker 3 (04:12):
It sure is?

Speaker 1 (04:13):
And its sound that sounds delicious. Now, of all the food,
what would be the more popular items that you sell
the most of every year?

Speaker 3 (04:22):
I think the sandwiches have a long line. Of course,
we also serve the lamb, which is also a very
popular item. Spiny colpe tie is served with the dinners
or the spinach pie that's also very popular. And you
can also get things all acart. Of course, the pastries.
If there are certain pastries that you really really want,

(04:42):
I would suggest to come earlier on the festival days,
just because by time Saturday evening or Sunday rolls around,
we can't guarantee that anything that is still there. Also,
we do have a collaboration, and I want to say
it was either last year or the year before it
was the first time we had but we joined forces
with Cammies Old Dutch. Oh, and there is a special

(05:06):
ice cream that she does with bay cla Via in
the ice cream.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Wow okay, and it's delicious.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
So if you want that also, you might want to
come early.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
That sounds fantastic, it really does. So Greek Fest is
a week from today. It is Thursday, Friday, Saturday and
Sunday October sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, and nineteen. Now, if somebody
wants more information, where can they find it?

Speaker 3 (05:29):
They can call the church at two five one, four,
three eight nine eight eight eight or go to greekfestmobile
dot com.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Now, what do you like to get when you do
Greek Fest?

Speaker 3 (05:41):
Of course I enjoy pretty much all the foods, but
my favorite thing is the soup liky and it is
marinated pork and of course it's marinated with all the
Greek spices. And you can either you can get that
in a peda with a tomato dress, just like you
would just like the u is with tomato, red onion, lettuce.

(06:02):
And of course the delicious tazeki.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
Sauce and how do you pronounce that souvlocky souvlaki?

Speaker 3 (06:08):
Perfect?

Speaker 1 (06:09):
Jackie, thank you so much for coming in and telling
the listeners about Greek Fest.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Thank you so much, and thank.
