Speaker 1 (00:00):
NewsRadio seven ten dot com The Uncle Henry Show weekday
afternoons from five till seven.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
When they had three commissioners, they didn't have had the
trouble they have now When everybody wanted to get rid
of them and take these new commissioners on. They're just
jumping up and down and they said, boy, this is heaven.
But now it's turned into hall with them.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
They just can't spend it.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
It's just beyond their imagination, these people that are down
there in office, and it got what they wanted. So
that's about all I got to say today.

Speaker 1 (01:06):
It says the Uncle Henry Show here on news Radio
seventy ten WNTM. Thank you so much for listening to
the Uncle Nary Show. I appreciate it, Bear bear much.
Once again, here we are together, me and you're trying

(01:26):
to figure out what is going on in the world
around us. If you would like to call the show
and give me a clue, because I don't know that
I have one two five one four seven nine two
seven two three. The telephone number on the Uncle Inver
Show two five one four seven nine two seven two three.

(01:49):
Email address Uncle Henry at iHeartMedia dot com. That's Uncle
Henry diheartmedia dot Com. There was a Mobile city council
meeting today and we will get into that. I'll share
with you what I can it was. It was very
mentally difficult to get through. The meeting was over. It
was just a little over an hour, which is pretty

(02:10):
good length for a city council meeting, but most of
it was politicians talking and it made it seem like
it was six or seven hours long. We'll get into
that later as the show proceeds here on News Radio
seven to ten WNT. But first I just wanted to
mention what I know you have already heard, and that
is that the longtime TV weather man John ed Thompson,

(02:34):
he passed away at age eighty two. John ed Thompson
jet jet passing away at age eighty two. Lots of
tributes to John Ed popping up on social media from
people who worked with him. I can tell you I
can only tell you what I know firsthand with John
ed Thompson. I had a chance to meet John Ed

(02:57):
early in my career. In fact, was able to interview
him early in my career on the Old Uncle Henry
Show on Port City six BATV on Cable TV. John
Ed Thompson was kind. He was kind, he was generous,
he was a nice guy, laid back through the years.

(03:22):
He was on TV for many, many years, I think
thirty years or something like that or more. I don't
know that I've ever heard anybody say a bad thing
about John ed Thompson, which in the business of broadcasting
is an accomplishment, because broadcasting can be a business where
people are jealous of each other and they start rumors

(03:42):
about each other, say mean things, say mean things about
each other. Never heard anything bad about John ed Thompson
throughout all the years he was on As I mentioned
the Old Uncle Henry Show back, I think in January
of nineteen ninety he was on TV with me. He
also appeared on this radio station with me a few times.

(04:04):
I think the last time John D was a guest
was back in twenty sixteen. In fact, and I've been
looking today, I cannot find a I cannot find a
copy of that. But John ed Thompson was on the
show back in twenty sixteen, because I think, if I
remember correctly, he I think he wrote or co wrote

(04:28):
the song look at Them Jaguars, and that was used
for the University of South Alabama Jags. And I think
he came back on The Uncle Henry Show in twenty
sixteen with a new version, a new lyrics and all
that kind of stuff. And I remember we played that
song in its entirety on the show and we talked

(04:50):
about that and other things. He has a big connection
to music. John Ed did already have received a voicemail
about the passing of John Ed Thompson. Let me go
to the Nklander Show voicemail.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
Hannah, there's hairs, Henry. This is a sad day in
the City of Mobile. Henry. We have had a meteorological institution.
Henry has passed on. John ed Thompson passed away today, Henry.
And there needs to be a statue. I want there

(05:28):
needs there needs to be There.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Needs to be a statue.

Speaker 4 (05:32):
All the flags and the city of Mobile need to
be put it half half staff. Hannah. I'm this will
hit hard, Henry. I was a huge, huge fan that
John Ed Thompson. And uh, I am so sad to
hear that he is going on. But uh, he'll be

(05:56):
watching out for the weather for us literally in the sky.
But anyway, Henry, if you have any John ed Thompson
in your archives. I do believe that Mobills would love
to hear it. Not only would they love to hear it,
but Henry, they need to hear the best brother man
Mobile had ever seen, Henry John ed Thompson. Anyway, Henry,

(06:22):
do you have a good day?

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Hefford, thank you for that. As I mentioned, I cannot
find the John Ed Thompson show that we did together
back in twenty sixteen, but I do have a brief
clip from when John Ed was on with me in
January of nineteen ninety on the old Uncle Henry Show
on Comcast Cable Channel six, BATV Port City six, whatever

(06:45):
they called it. Here's John ed Thompson on the Uncle
Henry Show back decades ago. John Ed, there's a famous
anecdote that we've got to get to right away so
that we can keep our viewers interested. Then you ought
to say it, No, this is this is something they
call you jet stream right.

Speaker 4 (07:04):
That's because of the weather.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
See, there's a there's a stream of air that brings
all of the U I heard the weather out of Canada.
I heard that there was an incident where you you
were wearing what what they call a wireless microphone and
then walked into the bathroom and that that the sound
went out over the air.

Speaker 5 (07:22):
Would you tell that story could happen?

Speaker 1 (07:26):
We'll tell it. Uh, the beginning of sports began and
there were four microphones open instead of three.

Speaker 6 (07:34):
The fourth one was in another.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
Room, that's what. So you just casually walked into another
under room.

Speaker 7 (07:39):
I was a guest and didn't know it.

Speaker 1 (07:43):
And so they're doing the sports and they hear this
tickling sound. Well that's just that's as tasteful as I
can put it. Right, Well, I had this, I had this.

Speaker 7 (07:51):
Spell and then yes, okay, all right, thank.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
You for covering Johnny. All Right, so Johnny, now you
noticed there's this story about John ed Thompson wearing his
microphone live when he goes to the men's room and
be people being able to hear it on television. You
could tell. I tried to get him to tell the story.
He didn't. He didn't want to tell the story. In fact,
he was I considered him in the Times I interviewed him.

(08:17):
He was somewhat modest. You meet a lot of people
on TV that have gigantic egos. He did not have
a gigantic ego. He didn't like talking about himself, so
you you know, Buford asked for a clip of John Ed.
That was that was me talking to John Ed about
John Ed, because John Ed didn't like to talk about
himself anyway. A little bit more. I've got a little

(08:41):
bit more on John Ed and other things as we
continue it. If you like to call him, maybe you
maybe you know about him, and you can tell us
about him. Two five one four seven nine two seven
two three the telephone number for the Uncle Henry Show.
Back after the break, Uncle Henry Show. News Radio seven

(09:14):
ten WNTM. There's five twenty news headlines coming up in
ten minutes from Fox ten and from Fox Radio National News.

Speaker 7 (09:27):
Now.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
I mentioned in the last open of the show we
were talking about the passing of longtime local weatherman John
Ed Thompson of w Ala, and I mentioned that I
had a little bit more on him that I wanted
to mention. I'll save that for just a moment because
I've got some callers hanging on here.

Speaker 8 (09:45):
Hello caller, Uncle Henry, how are you, Stephen Brelin.

Speaker 1 (09:49):
Stephen Brilin, you are live on the radio, Stephen Brelin.

Speaker 8 (09:53):
So I heard about John Ed, and you know, growing up,
I grew up was born in the mid eighties, so
you know, I'm the youngster on the show, I guess.
But John Ed was the staple in our house, like
he was the weatherman that I grew up with. And
I remember I don't know if it was after Ivan
or Katrina, but one of those, you know, he was
the weather guy. So he worked twenty four hours a
day during Hurricane and I remember us watching it was

(10:15):
today after and there it was a live helicopter shots
flying over Dolphin Island. He had a home on Dolphin Island,
and they flew over where his house was supposed to
be and it was gone. And I remember him saying, well,
I guess I should call all they have a power
and tell him the term of power off.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
Wow. Yeah.

Speaker 8 (10:31):
It was just one of security and images that I
have of John Ed for all those years, and you
just kind of, you know, he realized live on air
that he had lost his home.

Speaker 1 (10:40):
Wow.

Speaker 8 (10:41):
And see his his measured response to that, and just
with kind of a light hearted joke of well, I
guess I should call the power company.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
Well, you know, and that's and that that uh, that
fits him. He was quite measured, wasn't he.

Speaker 8 (10:54):
He definitely was, so I hate to hate to see
us lose a good one because he was definitely one
of those. Yeah, indeed, but it's something that I got
an opportunity today and I wanted to share it with you.
I got a chance to go on the Perdido Queen
riverboat tour of the Mobile Bay past the US United States,
and you know, so many times we'll go and we'll

(11:17):
go out of town to vacation, but I would encourage
folks vacation in your own hometown. There's things available to us.
And that was probably one of the most educational, really
kind of cool things to do. Didn't last about an hour.
Got in the paddle boat, you know, the big paddle boat,
went around the bay and or the you know right
there down around downtown. You know, the guy told us

(11:39):
all about you know, the USUS United States, and then
what's going on, you know at the Alabama Shipyard and
the ships that are there, and then all all the
all kinds of stuff. So I would encourage folks take
an afternoon before you get blistering hot and go go,
go do that. It's It's absolutely worth the money in
the time, very enjoyable experience.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
Hey, I have not seen that big ship you're too
talking about the United States. But I've in the last
couple of years, I've taken a couple of those tours
you're talking about now. The ones I took came out
of Blakely, the ones I was on. But I agree
with everything you just said that for those of us
that have lived here all of our lives and have
it seen the waterfront from that aspect, well worth your time.

(12:21):
Well worth your time.

Speaker 8 (12:22):
Yeah. Absolutely, And uh they have officially laid the first
pilings down for the bridge, and they've got two cranes
market on either side of the river where that bridge
is going to go, So it might actually happen in
your lifetime, I think.

Speaker 1 (12:37):
Yeah. You know, there was a press release out today,
I think from al dot explaining that what they're they're
testing to see if these these concrete pilings are going
to be good enough or not for what they've got planned.
So there's going to be a lot in the next month.
You're going to see a lot of testing going on
out there.

Speaker 8 (12:55):
Yeah. Anyhow, I just want to give you that update
and that little story that I've always remembered about Johnny
ed sot Hate. We've lost him.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
Hey, Stephen Brilin, thank you, Yes, sir, have a great day.
There you go, Stephen Brilan very young listener, And don't
please don't judge him harshly for being young and listening
to the Uncle Henry Show. I'm sure, I'm sure that
he can still communicate with young people if he tries hard.
Two five one four seven nine two two three the
telephone number here on the Uncle Henry Show.

Speaker 6 (13:25):
Hello color, Hey Henry is Ron Rings.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
Ron Raams, Ron Rings. Did you know John ed Thompson.

Speaker 6 (13:33):
Well, we worked together at Channel ten for a while
while I was there. Oh first, I first got to
mobile in nineteen seventy seven. You'll have to forgive my voice.
As you know, I've been sick the last couple of weeks.
I have coughed so much I've almost lost my voice.

(13:55):
But yeah, when I got here in seventy seven, I
was working with him and a bunch of other people,
including Bob Gripp at Channel ten. And you know, he
was a great fellow, as you said, just very personable,
always nice to people. I hated it when I heard

(14:19):
about him being attacked as he was as he was
pumping gasoline in a local service station. But you mentioned
the look at Them Jaguars song. He and Jerry Powell,
who was also a mobile music legend, they put that together.

(14:40):
Both of them wrote that song and.

Speaker 8 (14:44):
It was used for years.

Speaker 6 (14:46):
It was when Cliff Ellis was the basketball coach at
South Alabama. I can remember going down the Civic Center
to go to South Alabama basketball games and hear him
then play that song all the time. So and then
of course we had it on the radio.

Speaker 1 (15:02):
Oh yeah.

Speaker 6 (15:04):
It was one of those things that you know, it
kind of was a big hit with people for a while,
and then after a while they decided they wanted to
go another direction and got a different song. I don't
even know what it is, Yeah, but look at Them
Jaguars was a really big hit for John Ed and
Jared I just you know, like I said, I did

(15:26):
work with him for a while. We weren't super close,
but we we got long. And you know, I feel
for the folks at Fox ten because they worked with
them a whole lot longer than I did. Oh yeah,
and they got to be very good friends. It's like
a family down there. Tell the truth, there's still some people,

(15:48):
not a lot, but there's still some people I worked
with when I was there that are still working at
Fox ten. But back when I was there, it was
the NBC station.

Speaker 1 (15:59):
Yeah, yeah, that was switched. Yeah, that was quite That
was quite a That was quite a switch, wasn't it
They switched to Fox. Yes.

Speaker 6 (16:08):
It confused a bunch of people, it did, because they
they kept thinking they were going to get NBC news
on the station that was the Fox station, and they
thought they'd get the other way around on the other station.
And uh, for the longest time, people couldn't figure out
what was going on, even though they tried to publicize
it as much as they possibly could. But uh, anyway,

(16:33):
there you know, there's just a lot of good memories
of being at Fox ten back when it was NBC
ten for w A l A TV, And of course
I wor at every station in town. Henry, you know.

Speaker 1 (16:48):
That, I do know that. It's one of the It's
one of the fun things about Ron Raims is we
can ask you about it just about anything local media,
and you were attached to it somehow.

Speaker 6 (16:58):
Well, you know, I tell you people, the only station
I can definitely tell them and radio that I did
not work at was KSJ, because I was at almost
every other radio station that there wasn't mobile. But of course,
my long time, the longest time I ever spent at
one station was working with Bernie Dittman at wabb Yes,

(17:24):
and boy, we made lots of friends at WABD.

Speaker 1 (17:27):
Absolutely did I ride them up on the break.

Speaker 6 (17:31):
Good talking to you.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
Hey, thank you, Ron Raems. Ron rams with his memories
of John Ed Thompson. I have a little bit more
on John Ed and also some stuff from the count
the city council meeting, and your phone call should you
call after the break Uncle Henvery's show News Radio seven

(18:05):
to ten WNTM. It is five thirty five.

Speaker 3 (18:13):
Now.

Speaker 1 (18:13):
In the first half hour of the show, we've talked
about John Ed Thompson, the passing of John Ed Thompson,
remembering John Ed Thompson, a couple of more things, and
I've got a call a caller, hang on. I just
just a couple of quick things about John Ed Thompson
before we get into any other topic. If we do

(18:36):
not mentioned yet, John Ed was a DJ. Before John
Ed was on television, he was on radio as a
radio DJ. I don't know if he was on wabb
AM or not. I think he might have been on
wabb his name on the radio was Buddy Starr, Buddy Star.

(18:59):
You know, I need to remember that in case I
need to ever go on the LAMB and leave town
and start a career somewhere else in my final years.
Buddy Star could be a good radio name. So John
ed Thompson was known as Buddy Star on the radio.
And I got an email back in twenty seventeen about
John Ed Thompson from a man named Harmon Lansing, and

(19:24):
I've got the email here in front of me, he
wrote to me, Uncle Henry. I worked with John ed
Thompson for several years in the early nineteen seventies, both
at a TV station and at John Ed's semi professional
sound studio here in mobile multi track Ampex audio decks

(19:46):
with two inch wide tape. The email goes on It reads,
John Ed actually recorded what Willie's first hit record. I
saw it. It was pressed on forty five rpm record,
but because of a weak contract What Willy slipped over

(20:10):
to Capricorn Records, who then officially produced the first release.
Needless to say, John Ed was mortified. Several years passed
and I do not believe they ever came to any
satisfactory agreement. But John Ed still has that forty five

(20:32):
rpm record. And again that was an email from Harmon
Lancing So and he sent me a recording of keep
on Smiling. So Harmon Lansing says that John Ed recorded
that song, had it pressed into a record, and then
what Willy ended up signing with some of the some
of the people, and John Ed was John Ed was

(20:54):
that close to being a big part of what Willy's
career there. So anyway, John Ed Tom soon he loved
by many, And of course we'll be missed. Two five
one four seven nine two two three the telephone number
here on the Uncleanry Show.

Speaker 3 (21:11):
Hello Color, Hey, Henry, are youing?

Speaker 1 (21:14):
Snake Trevor Snake tripor How are you doing?

Speaker 3 (21:17):
I mean, I'm doing great, Man. I just want people
out there, not that my heart and prayers are out
there for the Thompson family. Man, he will be greatly
missed here mobile and he was definitely.

Speaker 1 (21:28):
An icon, Yes he was.

Speaker 3 (21:30):
But uh, oh, Hendy, what I told I also tell
you about man. I had me a snake removal today.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
Oh oh today, this is a fresh snake removal report.
So tell us what happened.

Speaker 3 (21:43):
Ogle, Henry, I got a call at three point fifteen,
and you know, I get off at three thirty. A
guy was selling his trying to sell his boat and
uh and the process of showing it the scene a
snake in it. So he got in touch with me
and I told him it was allf lot Rod, probably
about two miles down lot Road where he was at.
I told him I could be there in probably about

(22:04):
fifteen minutes.

Speaker 8 (22:05):
So he shot me to.

Speaker 3 (22:06):
Address and I asked him did he know what kind
it was over him? And he told me thinks it
might be a rattlesnake, but he couldn't hear it rattle.
So anyway, I was excited and prepared. So I got
over there, Uncle Henry, and got in his boat and
wind up being a very aggressive garter snake. Man.

Speaker 1 (22:27):
Wait no wait wait wait wait wait wait wait wait,
time out. It was a garter snake, a huge garter snake,
and it was it was aggressive. I've never heard of
the word aggressive used with garter snake. Are they known
to be aggressive? Uh?

Speaker 3 (22:42):
Not really, Uncle Henry. This one here, when I put
my hand in there, it grabbed my hand. I had
a glove on it because I didn't want it to
bite me. Because you know, you know, because from what
people don't realize that garter snake's bites can be toxic
to people. They have a neuro toxin in their mouth,
kind of almost like a venom. They're just very deadly

(23:04):
to amphibians and stuff like that and rats and mice.
But it's not much of a danger to humans. But
like I said, he grabbed my glove on him, and
I pulled him right out, and you know, actually shot
a video of me releasing that snake and showing how
aggressive it was on the Snake Trapper page, just trying

(23:28):
to get him out of the bucket. He hit my
hand in glove probably about five or six times.

Speaker 1 (23:33):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (23:34):
For folks out there like to see that video, it
is on the Snake Trapper page. It was posted probably
about thirty minutes ago.

Speaker 1 (23:41):
Okay, so on Facebook it's two words snake and then trapper.
Go look him up. Look him up on Facebook. Look
at the video.

Speaker 3 (23:49):
Yes, sir, that's the woman with the pink snake emotion.
You Henry like your T shirts? You got buddy, all right?

Speaker 6 (23:55):
But yeah, man, check it out.

Speaker 3 (23:58):
Like I said, it was, it was a trip because
I've never seen one that aggressive and it was a
pretty good size one, and I believe he may have
been in the boat feeding on something, because look like
he had just swallowed something. I kind of have a
nott in Billy, so I turned him loose here in
my yard for miss snake Trappers. You know, she's gonna
find out shortly. She'll see that video and she's not

(24:19):
gonna be happy about that. But you know, man, we
have a lot of king snakes around here, and i'd
like from the stay and a garter snake is at
the top of the king snake's menu, all right, So
every chance I get, I will turn one of them.
All rat snake loose in my yard. Anytime I remove
on him, I'll release him here. So go check that

(24:40):
video out.

Speaker 1 (24:40):
On him, all right? Well do hey, snake trapper, thank
you for telling us about that.

Speaker 3 (24:44):
Yes, sir, buddy, and you take care of you two.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
There he goes the snake trapper again. He's on Facebook.
Look for snake trapper. Two words, snake trapper. This is
the Uncle Henry Show here on news radio seven to
ten WNTM. Today was a mobile city council meeting last
at about an hour, which is a good link for
a city council meeting, but as I mentioned earlier, very
difficult to go through because the politicians, they were in

(25:10):
such love with hearing themselves talk. This was one of
the worst. Don't well, I don't know. Maybe you're a person,
maybe you love hearing politicians talk. They just could not.
They just talked and talked and talked, these politicians, and
they loved talking to each about themselves and about other things,
and just give it using twenty words when you could

(25:31):
just use one. Now, Corey Penn, I believe, talked more
than anybody else. And he is I don't know him well.
I know he seems to be on the videos to
be a likable guy, very likable. But my goodness, does
he have to do? Does he have to talk that much?

(25:53):
Here's a little example. He said, you're going to enjoy this.
He's talking about how Mobile is a wonderful place and
how he went somewhere and he was he was congratulating
the tourism people for doing a great job with tourism
and Mobile, and he's talking about how wonderful Mobile is
and how he met a couple that took their honeymoon here.

Speaker 5 (26:15):
Taking a picture on again. I know, I'm talking, but listen,
David and their team is doing an amazing job. I
was in Arkansas, Fairfield. Don't ask me why I'm in Arkansas,
but I'm in Arkansas, and a young lady told me
for their wedding vacation, what do you call it?

Speaker 1 (26:37):
Honeymoon, they came to Mobile their wedding vacation Alabama.

Speaker 5 (26:41):
And I said, you came to Mobile, Alabama And they said,
they saw marketing ad and they saw the culture and
everything they want experience, and they want to come to Mobile, Alabama.
And I thought about David, and I thought about all
the great work that they're doing with Visit Mobile. And
I know a lot of times we think about I
see it because we here, but it's some great things

(27:04):
here in the city Mobile, and we have to tell
our story and they're telling our story. So David, thank
you so much. Visit Mobile, the whole team, y'all doing
an amazing job. Can we give them a big hand
as well? Y'all doing a great job. Thank you, mister president,
Vice President.

Speaker 1 (27:23):
I'm going to piggyback on the Councilman pen Show this morning.

Speaker 4 (27:27):
And.

Speaker 1 (27:29):
Yeah, the Councilman Pen Show, And that wasn't the he continued,
just I don't know. I don't know that the amount
of time you talk equaling more votes. I hope that's
not the math that's being done. But anyway, I'll have
a little bit more from the council meeting in a
moment here on WNTM seventy times Saber tracking Uncle Henry

(28:08):
Show News Radio seven to ten WNTM. It's five fifty
news headlines coming up in ten minutes, and then there's
more Uncle Henry Show. Today there was a mobile city
council meeting in longtime caller Buford, his oldest daughter had
a field trip to the city council meeting today. Beaufford

(28:31):
went with her and he left me a couple of
voicemails about going to the city council meeting today. I'm
going to share with you one of those messages. I'm
going to get to the other stuff tomorrow at some point,
but here is one of Buford's messages about his observations
at today's mobile city council meeting.

Speaker 4 (28:54):
Henny. Another comment on the field tip to the city council, Henry.
You know, it was a very interesting phil trip. We
got a tour of government plazas. Uh, and and got
to see the mayor oil offices and Henry, my favorite

(29:16):
part was we got to see the back room where
all the decisions for me. But uh, Henry's Sandy Simpsons,
the Sandy Simpsons. Sandy Simpson was walking into the elevators
when our class was walking out, and he stopped and
addressed the chill Green and was very may Oil. Henry

(29:40):
I fairly enjoyed his old Nobile Southern accent as he
addressed the chill Green and U told each one of
them that they could be mayor and said they needed news.

meeting from Beaufford standpoint, because he was in there and
watched the meeting go on, and there's some stuff I'm
not going to have time to get to in this
hour of the show. Today, I do have time for this.

Every takes this they're just and it doesn't it sound
like fun to be on the city council? So much fun?
Y'all get to go and spend some time together, not
only during the week, but then on the weekend you
get to go and dunk dunk each other in dunking
booths and it's fun. Doesn't it sound like fun being
a politician?

Speaker 4 (33:03):

Speaker 1 (33:04):
Uh, let's see what else CJ. Small did say this,
and I appreciate CJ. Small saying this before the meeting
was over.

Go to lanyapmobile dot com for their excellent coverage of
the city council and also the entire city council meeting
is on YouTube. And as I've told you many times before,
if you've got insomnia, trouble sleeping, just line up these

(33:40):
city council videos and have them go one after the other.
And if you can, if you can stay awake through
one of them, you've got you. You probably need to
go to a doctor. I'm serious. If you can stay
awake through one of them, complete probably need to go
to a doctor and find out what might be wrong
with you. So uh more on that council committing tomorrow

(34:01):

take a time out. News headlines are coming up. After

Foster about more new things coming to the mobile Sanger Theater,
going to talk to Ryan, Pablo Foster, and I don't

(34:22):
