Speaker 1 (00:13):
We're talking decking, as we do many times on the weekend.
Joe Adelman is my guest. He is with Moisture Shield Decking.
We're gonna learn all about it. Really really neat product.
I talked about Moisture shared a lot.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
In their early teens and a good product. And Joe,
welcome that home with Gary Salvin, how.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Are you great? Carry, Thanks so much for having us on.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Let's talk decking. I mean, I'm an older guy.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
You couldn't tell.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
But one of the things that I've seen is I've
seen the decking industry go through all these changes.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
You know, pressure tree wood was going to last forever.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah, it wasn't.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
When we found out, that didn't really happen. And most
people seem to be working on their deck more than
playing on their deck.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
And you see people going with composite decking, and jeez,
I've seen people try to put time on deck, a
paint deck restored. Now, if you're building a deck right
now or replacing the boards, you got a product called
moisture Shield. But as I show you the whole generational
thing of decking, am I right?

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yeah, it's Gary, It's changed quite a bit. So pressure
treated as you mentioned was on the market and it
still does. A lot of people still use pressure treated.
The biggest issue with pressure treated is maintenance. Right of
course wood. Even though there's great manufacturers that make pressure
treated wood, over time, the sun and the water will

(01:35):
break it down. You do need to stain it every
year every other year depending and it can get splinter.
So if you've got little ones, if you like to
have the friends and family over, it could chip or splinter.

Speaker 1 (01:48):
And they keep changing the different pressure methods and I
don't know I'm saying this. It seems like pressure treated
wood just isn't what it used to be. And you
know that's my opinion. Yeah, and I get a lot
of calls like that it's changed. I think there were
more companies that made pressure treated would that did an
okay job. There are a few still good, so a

(02:08):
few really good companies that I would recommend that you
would want to stick with those those premiere brands for
pressure treated. The biggest issue is that with a composite deck,
it's a.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
One and done. Once you get it installed and it
and it looks great, you don't really ever have to
go and stain. Ever, I would not recommend painting it.
You know, a powerwash every other every other year every year.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Be careful with the pressure of course.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
Yeah, we've got we've got guidelines of course online that
uh that you don't want to go over. But other
than a pressure treat every every year every other year,
I mean, it looks great forever. Uh, you don't ever
have to worry about splinters, chipping and cracking.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
No, we can't say it's maintenance free because you got
to clean it, correct, That's that's that's silly. But anyway,
you don't have to do much maintenance. You got to
clean it like you gotta clean everything out outdoors.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
That that's for sure the interesting thing.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
And I want you to talk about the moisture shield
because composites. We hear about pressure tree wood, we hear
about composites, and then we have this cap composite which
is like a PVC coding on it, which is fine,
but you guys still have pure composite credit.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
It's different. Yeah, I mean, you got some great stories.
I asked her earlier today. I said, do you guys
still like own the boat dock industry? And you go like, well,
we saw all of it from the boat docks. You
can put a composite on a boat dock.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Yeah, absolutely, So A little bit of the backstory, Gary,
is that when our parent company is a company called
olood Castle, and when they look for innovative technologies, and
they like to buy companies and take good companies and
make them great. And so when they were evaluating the
deck space, they realize that it's an oversaturated market and

(03:57):
a lot of the deck companies are making a very
similar deck product. So they looked at a company called
Aert out of Springdale, Arkansas, and they had a few
technologies that they liked. So Oldcastle acquired them about eight
years ago. And what we've done is we've taken their
initial good technology and we've come up with some really

(04:17):
dynamic things that we consider We are now the industry leader,
at least with science and technology. When it comes to
a deck board.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
Well, you know some of the and you know this,
some of the composite decks from years gone by and
maybe not so long ago. If you put those in
a bucket of water and you let us sit there
for six months, uh, you might have a lot of
salt dust. You were telling me a story of how
you test on your composites on how it stays together.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Tell me that story again. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
So when I started our one of the one of
the value props of our of our product is that
it's an outdoor product. But a lot of our competitors
are only water resistant. We are. We are absolutely submersible,
so you can you can use us underwater, you can
take us to grade, you can backfill against against the
deck board. So when I started, I took cut pieces

(05:11):
of our product and our competitors product, and I put
them in Mason jars. And it's been five years now
and a lot of the other guys, yeah, well they're
murky or you can see some fibers and discoloration on
one of them. There's some swelling. And with ours, it
looks like if I put the cut piece out, you
could you could just strength the water. It's it can

(05:34):
swelled it all none at all.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
And that's before the sun even gets to play a
z am correct whoa.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
And that was the big thing is that when when
Oldcast was looking at deking, they did a ton of
data research about what are the issues that contractors, homeowners,
architects face with using composite decking, And the number one
complaint came back, it gets superheated. So you're buying an
outdoor product to build an outdoor living space that you

(06:01):
can't out or live on without putting shoes on or
putting down a rug or getting the hose out kind
of defeats the purpose.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
And that is a big story, right.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Yes, so we were helping you folks with the water
issues and the sun issues. But let's face it, I
get this question every week. You probably get it every
five minutes. Can I build a deck with a western
facing and with a southwestern facing? And can I walk
on it on my bare feet?

Speaker 3 (06:30):
With most composite decks, with everything you know, and don't
believe me, I'm the company guy, but if you google
how hot composite decks get.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
There is just how hot? Can I get? About one
hundred and sixty more?

Speaker 3 (06:44):
With our testing and with my test and my teams,
we've get the heat gun out on a sunny day
and we always shoot text messages back in the week
and like, look how hot this is? They get extremely hot.
The test should be could you or your family safely
walk on it? And with a lot of our competitors,
they do get too hot that you would not want

(07:04):
to put your family or your pets on it for
a long period of time.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
So you've got a decking and it's a composite correct
that doesn't get super hot.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
You got it.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
You got a great little heat lamp.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
Heat lamp over there is showing me yep, some of
the other composites or cap composite. Putting your hand on
and you're right, you can burn your hand yep, and
then on yours right next to it. Composite, different colors.
It's like almost air temperatures, like putting your hand on
a coffee table.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yep. So Oldcast would developed a technology which we call
a cool deck and it's an application that we add
to not all of our decklines, but to some of them.
And it's provable that and that's why we brought the
heat lamp in is that we're not going to only
tell you that we're a better product. That's I'm going
to prove it to you, Garrett for you. So we've

(07:58):
got a few of our competitors there and as you mentioned,
you know, it's been about an hour and a half.
You wouldn't want to walk on those boards. They would
burn you. And with our boards, they've been in there
under the same light and they're warm, but it would
absolutely be safe enough for you and your family to
walk home.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
We ran a home in South Carolina every other year
or so, and the steps going up to the house
from the room was so hot we couldn't let a
kid run up there with his bare feet. They're all
gonna try, and they're all going to come down crying.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Gary, I call it the problem. I call it the
Tennessee two step. Is that when when you see people
do that little shuffle when they're walking barefoot on a
composite deck.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
It burnt mine. I can't move that fast. Name my
kids pointed dead out to me. That's another story. But anyway,
first of all, it's beautiful, composite it is, and it
doesn't absorb the heat. I guess it's it's almost like
a radiant barrier.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
It'll get warm, but it like we compare it to
a heat blanket. And the biggest thing is is that
it will stay. It will never get hot enough that
it will truly burn anybody's feet. So it's a family safeboard.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
So is there a specific collection on that? What's it called? There?

Speaker 3 (09:08):
So there is. So we've got five collections and the
one is Vision and Meridian are going to be the
two lines that have this cool deck technology. And recently
we launched a fifth line which is called Stratos, which
is a PVC deck line and that also has the
cool deck technology. And then we have two other lines

(09:29):
that do not. We have Elevate, which is just a
great price point, and then we also have an uncapped
board cut advantage which has got some really neat characteristics
as well.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
I think the one thing everybody should be considering, especially
if you're considering buying different composits for a decking or
any just pressure treated wood, is find out what warranties,
what they cover. And I know you've got a good one.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
We'll take a break, we'll come back and talk about that.
We're talking to Joe al knew it screwed up, Adelman,
I do that rightmen.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Gosh darn it.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
Joe, we're talking about the the cooler tech Oh my gosh,
that just sounds so fantastic. But your warranty on your
composite decking is unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (13:04):
Yeah, it's the best.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
It is the best.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
Gary. If you look at all of her competitors, or
most of our competitors, their warranty is that little thirty
second or sixty fourth of a top coat the cap stock,
and it covers fading and chipping and cracking. But most
of them don't actually speak to a warranty for the board.
Because all of our boards are completely waterproof and submersible.

(13:30):
We call that technology solid core. Since all of our boards,
whether it's the premiere you know, the our Cadillac Vision
Board and Stratus or are are at least expensive elevate board,
they all have the solid core. So all of them
have a fifty year structural warranty in addition to a
warranty on the top coat. So our Vision board has

(13:51):
a fifty year structure and a fifty year fade in stain.
So there's not another deck board that I'm aware of
that has a warranty even close to what we offer.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
What's the Joyce center to center twelve inch.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
So typically it's twelve or sixteen. Okay, So all of
our boards were approved on twelve or sixteen. Oh ok
because of our solid course. Sometimes with some of the
competitors that you get on sixteens and it feels a
little bouncy, especially if you get bigger guys you know
out you know a lot of guys out there for
that that barbecue. With our board, it's very rigid. So

(14:25):
on twelves or sixteens it feels very you know, structural,
It feels good. And then our Stratus board, our PVC
board can actually be ran twenty four on center. Wow,
and there's not a board really out.

Speaker 2 (14:37):
There, say, I don't know one out there that can
do that.

Speaker 3 (14:39):
Yeah. And the thing is is with PBC, PBC on
sixteen can get a little bouncy, so nobody would even
consider it on twenty four, and Stratus on twenty four
it feels very rigid, very very stable.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
Well, I'll tell you what, folks, you got to do
your research. If you're going to build a deck this fall, man,
you're you're run late now. I mean you got to
get on. If you're doing it next year, that's fine too.
But there's a lot to look into, and there's a
lot of big time brand names. But check out this
moisture shield because it's really got the best warranty in
the industry. Is that is that true?

Speaker 3 (15:10):
That's that's that's a fact.

Speaker 2 (15:11):
Yeah, yeah, that's unbelievable. Contractors. Do you work with contractors?

Speaker 1 (15:16):
Can you guess a lot of places where it's sold to.
We'll offer a contractor, yeah, name too, but yeah.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
We uh, we embrace our contractors and we you know,
my team and I we we engage with our contractors,
you know, every day every week that we reach out
and try to find how we can support them. We
know we've got the best product out there, but without
a great contractor, you know, we're nothing. So we we
definitely embrace our contractor base.

Speaker 2 (15:44):
They're gonna they're going to execute the plan.

Speaker 3 (15:45):
That's for sure, you got it.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
And a good product always helps availability. Where's moisture Shields sold?

Speaker 3 (15:52):
So we're a national company, so we are sold through distribution,
and we've got great distribution partnerships so we can get
it to you anywhere, you know, even up in Canada.
So we have a dealer locator on moisture shield dot
com where you can go and put your zip code
in and it's going to show a few places that
you can buy in your area, and we also have
a contractor who to install it that some of our

(16:13):
contractors are going to be listed on our website as well,
So if you go to the website, it's going to
have a lot of a lot of information.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
Joe, I know, some of the questions we take on
the show is, I've got these boards that are all
messed up.

Speaker 2 (16:26):
They're splintering, the grains.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
Raised, and I dislike, and I've been very public about this,
these resurface things that peel all over the place and
cost you a bunch of bunch of money. I'm sure
you see business with people pulling up old pressure treeted
wood and putting your moisture shield down.

Speaker 3 (16:43):
Yeah. It depends on the condition of the substructure, of course, right,
So if you if you talk to most of our
good contractors, they would recommend, because of safety, that you
would you would pull it all down and then you
would put fresh pressure treated on. Ideally you would put
joystape on top of that, and then you would install

(17:04):
the moisture show decking on top of that.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
On top of the substructure on the substruction.

Speaker 3 (17:09):
Yeah, but typically when you're you know, if you're ripping
off your deck, it's probably been there ten, fifteen, twenty years.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
Yeah, a fine line there isn't there because that decking,
the substructure, the holding.

Speaker 3 (17:22):
It up, it's on a timer.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
Yeah, it's what at best thirty years?

Speaker 3 (17:26):
Yeah, yeah, and it depends on like I said, the
pressure treater.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
That that so do your homework.

Speaker 3 (17:32):
Do your homework. So there are some great companies out
there that make pressure treating and then they would recommend
that you wouldn't want to start fresh well, because you're
gonna put it forever board.

Speaker 1 (17:43):
Well that was you know, yeah, I mean, gosh, the
calls we've taken on different ceilers and even that's confusing. Yeah,
you got late tex base, you got still some oil bases,
you got you know, no UV ceilings, you got all
I want to clear. I mean it's all over the lot,

(18:03):
and some are gonna last a year and at most
the semi transparency might get four in a shade, yeah,
if it's a dark color. So we seem to work
on our decks a lot. And so I'm sure everybody
listening right now. Is called moisture shield. Write that down right,
that down it's moisture shield. But what's the differential in costs.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
Versus a pressure treated wood and say a moisture shield
product the cool decking, if you will, sure.

Speaker 3 (18:29):
So the substructure we're going to say is the sunk cost.
Because whether you do a pressure treating deck or a
moisture shield deck, you're still going to need to build
it on some sort of framing. So when it's just
going to the actual deck board itself, you know, from
like a two buy versus depending on what board that

(18:49):
you go with with us, I mean, it could be
anywhere from twice to maybe three times or one and
a half times more.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
Really I'm just thinking three times solid no, so really
won't be probably not away.

Speaker 3 (19:02):
You're still going to need railing of course, even on
a wood deck, right, So that's the costs. So when
it comes down to the deck board, Gary, what we
try to educate our clients about is that do you
really want to be out there every year with a
bucket of stain?

Speaker 2 (19:17):
Nobody does.

Speaker 3 (19:17):
And a bucket of stain, you know, a gallon of
stain is sixty to eighty to one hundred dollars depending
on what you're going with.

Speaker 2 (19:22):
People don't believe that.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
But it's it's time consuming, you know, and it's it's
not a fun it's not a fun weekend staining the deck.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
Joe my Moniker has been for the last twenty five years.
As I'm all about easy, and you're making it easy.
So you get the nod at two times, even if
it's even a little bit more net and you say
it's not, but at two times, that's a deal.

Speaker 3 (19:44):
And then if you look at the cost of the
stain and the labor, the sweat equity over five years,
ten years, I mean it's probably going to actually be
less expensive.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
If you're paying somebody to do that, I guarantee you
it'll be oh yeah expensive.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (19:57):
So you also have a cool product people may be
interested in. Because I get questions about an old patio
and racks in it and it doesn't match.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
You have something called an insta deck.

Speaker 3 (20:08):
Yeah, Gary, it's a product we're super proud of. It's
it's it's a polypropylene waterproof tile. And what it is
is that if you've got a rooftop, if you've got
that patio, you know, like you mentioned, with weeds and
cracks coming through, you can have a beautiful, brand new
moisture deck and you don't need to pull any permits. Typically,

(20:30):
if you've got to pop up, you know, a wedding,
you need a dance floor, you need, you know, a
pop up event for a weekend, you can put our
instad dect tiles down, put moisture shield boards on it,
and you've got this beautiful high and looking deck, either
for temporary or you could do it, you know, for
a permanent installation at your house. One of our sister
companies is Bellguard Pavers, and with the Instadak tile with

(20:54):
a moisture showed deck board, it is exactly the same
height as a bell Guard paver. So you can have
that mixed Oh it's beautiful. So that mixed media look
with the stone that can posit, maybe some grass, you know,
the jacuzzi, the pergola, I mean with old castle brands,
I mean we we build that oasis in the backyard.

Speaker 1 (21:13):
Well, you can't find an old patio that doesn't have
a bunch of cracks, patches of concrete and all kinds
of issues. And if you could put an instant deck
around on top of that, man, you'd be ahead of
the game.

Speaker 3 (21:25):
You got it.

Speaker 2 (21:26):
Love it. So where can people get more information?

Speaker 1 (21:29):
I mean we're both uh a little yappie. Can we
filled in a lot of a lot of voids there,
But I think people might be interested in reading a
little bit about that.

Speaker 2 (21:38):
How they get to your Yeah.

Speaker 3 (21:39):
The first step is moisture shild dot com or RDI
dot com for the r rally. And with moisture shield
you can order free samples, oh nice, or you can
get cut pieces. And then when you order a sample,
your contact information will go to our sales team and
they'll reach out with a little email just to say, hey,
if you need any help or any advice, here's my

(22:01):
contact information. And you basically have an advocate to advise you,
an advisor to come and kind of give you any
advice about your project.

Speaker 2 (22:09):
Well, it's safe to say people should get on. Let's
start doing this now.

Speaker 1 (22:12):
Seriously, if you're going to build one, this fault for sure, absolutely,
even if you're building one next year.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
Yet our dead research.

Speaker 1 (22:18):
Now there's a lot to learn and compare what those
products do, compare what those warranties are, and from what
I see, uh, you better go to Morsture morstureshield dot com.

Speaker 2 (22:29):
Hey, thanks for joining us.
