(00:01):
All right, best time of theday, I get us ticket afternoon.
Welcome now our number four. You'reat home with Gary Sullivan taking you through
the noon hour at one o'clock andthen well that'll be it till tomorrow morning
at nine am. We'll do itall over again, talking a little home
improvement, maintenance repair. Here's ourphone number if you'd like to grab a
line, it's eight hundred eighty twothree eight two five five. And those

(00:25):
lines that are open for you todiscuss what's going on in your house or
outside your house. All right, let's get back to the phone calls we
got Glen Glenn welcome. Hello.I've got an idea, a couple ideas
on the water issue at the thermos, the valve that he has to adjust

(00:46):
every morning. Yes, previous caller, uh huh, huh huh, I've
lived this one. So it couldbe the water pressure itself, Okay,
coming from the cold water and thehot water are different, areable, and
if they're too variable, the mixerin the back can't handle it. Mixes

(01:07):
hot or cold. So cross mixes, right, yeah, cross mixes,
and say his water fluctuates on thecold side, pushes harder on the cold
occasionally, then he doesn't get asmuch hot water. It will also be
the cartridge, the thermostatic cartridge inthe back back behind the stem or the

(01:30):
regulator, right, it could bethat if it if that's old, which
is what happened to mine, needsto be replaced. Did they replace it
for free? It was twenty yearsold. I don't think they do that
anymore A wise guy. Yeah, yeah, it actually took me a while

(01:52):
to find the right cartridge. Butit's it's all set to go in.
I you know, I'm pretty sureit's going to fix my problem. But
yeah, those are the two thingsthat in my research because I had the
same thing going on. Yeah,so I've had I've replaced cartridges before,
but I didn't have that exact sameproblem. I was wondering if that was
the cartridge, but I didn't sayit because I wasn't sure. As far

(02:14):
as the cross mixing, it soundedlike a cross mixing problem, but you
said it more eloquently on how youhow it actually happens with the fluctuating water
pressure. But yeah, both ofthose are very good tips and I appreciate
the call. Okay, well, thanks for taking my call. I appreciate
it. You bet my bike allright, if you'd like to join us,

(02:37):
do so. It's eight hundred eighttwo three eight two five five.
Then, boy, if you gotany ceramic tile, and many of us
doing our homes, whether it's theuh uh fouryer in the by the front
door or the kitchen or the guruthe bathroom floor, uh probably one of

(02:57):
the things you struggle with periodically isgrout that isn't clean. And boy,
I'll tell you what. If youhave light ceramic tile and you have light
groud and that gets dirty, itjust looks terrible. I mean if you

(03:17):
have a beige type of ceramic,or a white ceramic or even a light
gray and you had matching grout, which mainly you would have, and that
becomes soiled and it's all of asudden, you know, sixty eight colors
deeper in color. Man, it'slike black lines going through it. So

(03:39):
how do you get that clean? And good Lord knows. We talk a
lot about cleaning and a lot aboutyou know, dressing things up a little
bit, but growd can be achallenge. And if you've been one that's
gotten you know, hands and kneesand scrubbed with grout cleaners and you're scrubbing

(04:03):
for a half hour and you've nowcleaned about a foot of it. You've
had enough of that project. I'msure. I joke and say I'm all
about easy, and that's just notan easy project. And a lot of
people listening may have tried steam cleaninggrout, which I'm not really a huge

(04:26):
fan of. Remember, water doesa lot of damage in our homes,
and here we are taking water, hot water, steam and we're injecting.
It's kind of like power washing yourkitchen floor. And maybe you got c
min board underneath it. I hopeyou do, But underneath that, maybe
you've got a subfloor and that wateris just not all good for that floor.

(04:53):
They may clean it up all right, but I think I've got maybe
a little better idea. A lotof times those stains are, you know,
stuff we drag in on our shoes. Maybe it's from mopping the floor,
and that dirt gets embedded and penetratesinto the groud because the grout isn't

(05:15):
sealed as good as it should be, and even sealed grout can still absorb
I think it's like one and ahalf percent unsealed grout about three to four
percent, and so even though it'ssealed, it can still allow moisture and

(05:35):
dirt to penetrate into the ground. But what you may not realize is that
dirt or that stain is only downI'm gonna guess sixty fourth of an inch.
In other words, it's kind ofa surface stain. And one of

(05:58):
the things that I've found that's prettyeffective at removing that stain is not a
chemical at all. And many timesduring this show when we're talking about removing
stains or removing coatings or removing stuff, I always talk about why you can
do it chemically, you can doit mechanically, So you mean, like

(06:19):
paint, you can stand it,or you can use a paint stripper.
And if you've struggle with different areasof lightening the grout and you haven't had
real good success with it chemically, you might take a look at removing it
mechanically, and how do you dothat? Well, if you're familiar with

(06:42):
a drumal tool, and a drumaltool is you know, maybe I don't
know, eight inches long and it'syou know, maybe in inch and a
quarter it circumforts or an inch andit's motorized, it's electric. It gets
a little and you get to littletips, and there's little grinding stones,

(07:06):
and they make all kinds. There'sprobably two hundred different tips you can get.
And I found if you get alittle cone shaped stone about the width
of the grout lines, because groutlines are all different widths depending on the
type of tile and the size oftowel and everything else. And you can
find one of those stones about thewidth of that grout and take that drumwell

(07:30):
tool and just go over that groutback and forth a few times, not
much more than that we're plying.Applying very little pressure, you will grind
off like a sixty fourth of thatgrout or less, and the grout will
appear clean. Now, the secretto that is you've grind away some of

(07:56):
the grout and you've also ground offany sealer that was there, so after
it's clean, removing the residue fromthat and then coming back and sealing the
grout is going to be very beneficialin terms of keeping that grout clean in
the future. But if you haven'ttackled cleaning that ground any other way,

(08:18):
in other word, you gave upit's dirty u that might be something you
want to take a look at.And again just a Drumbell tool something along
those lines. They also have multipurposetools that also have little tips that you
can use on front of that toolto remove just a little bit, see

(08:39):
kind of standing away that top coatingof the grout itself. All right,
our phone number eight hundred eight twothree eighty two five five will take a
break. Brian, you'll be upfirst. We'll continue at home with Gary
Salvan right here on fifty five caresee de talk stations stale down. Then
we'll be taking your car questions atone right after Gary Sullivan on fifty five

(09:00):
care seats. Then back at itwe go nineteen minutes after the top of
the air at home with Gary Sullivanand happy to take your call. We're
talking about your home and focusing onmaintenance and repair and Brian has a tip
for it. Brian, you're stayingdry out there. I am. It's
going to start raining tomorrow though inCalifornia about four days of rain. I

(09:24):
know. I talked to my buddyout in Dayna Point and he said,
man, it rained for five days. We're supposed to have a nice day
and it's going to rain another fivedays. It's gorgeous right now. I
live out on riverside, so it'sokay. Tomorrow afternoon it's going to start
the poor again. But we needwe'll get from throwing them mountain soon.
Yeah. Yeah, we're making uplost time, aren't we. Yeah?

(09:46):
We are. As a tip Ihad is I've been in my house thirty
two years and I have Price Sisterproducts. They replaced the cartridges for free.
Still still I do good me tolast year. You know, they
get really tough and I try togrease them up and they're still not not
good. So I sent a pictureand sent it in and later I got

(10:09):
two new cartridges. Yeah. Thereason I said, I think Mowen has
just now stopped doing that. ButPrice Fister, now I think are they
just known as Price faucets or Fister? I think I think I think it
is Price. Yeah. I havingto find a customer service number last year
and they sent them to me.I was surprised, though, excellent,

(10:30):
Yeah those things aren't cheap. Thereyou go good? Fine, No,
no, they're not all right?Hey, joy, all right, stay
dry, all right, we'll seeyou. All right, Let's go to
Jeff. Jeff welcome. Hey Gary, a big fan of the show.
Thank you, sir. I've gota bit of a plumbing challenge for you.

(10:50):
My trustee Kenmore reverse Asthmos's drinking watersystem, which has really served me
faithfully for over thirty thirty fifteen years. Now it's developed a slow leak along
the seam of its plastic manifold assembly. And now the catch is the thing
is non serviceable. So in otherwords, there's no easy fix here.

(11:16):
I've scoured the web and this dinosaurpart is nowhere to be found. So
my million dollar question for you,Gary is how can I work some DIY
magic to seal this sucker so Ican get another year or two out of
it. So kind of explain thisto me, because usually if you have
a reverse osmosis system and there's aleak, it's usually you know where the

(11:37):
filter titans on there, and youknow you got to uncharge you like,
and redo it and retighten then allthat. What's the manifold or what tell
you know, obviously there's got tobe some washers or something that are failed,
that have failed that's causing that leak. Yeah, the manifold that you

(11:58):
know, it's the assembly that housesthe filters, you know that screw on
the filter screw under the manifold,so it's on the top and the three
filter two hang down from below it, right, So it controls the water
flow through the rivers osmosa system. And it looks like it's two plastic parts,
the top and the bottom that arebonded together somehow. And so I

(12:24):
don't see any washers or anything ofthat nature. It's strictly that goes all
the way around. Okay, okay, So without being able to see it,
obviously it's hard for me. I'ma little challenged on how that's connected.
But I'm familiar with those kind ofsystems. Of course, every brands
a little bit different. But whenI said a lot of times the issue

(12:48):
is the filter attachment, it couldbe the same thing, right, I
mean, if the filter cannot attachsecurely because the manifold is comp and not
taunt enough, that would cause itto leak by you looking at it,
does what I say make sense?Well, the thing is that it's non

(13:13):
serviceable, so there's no way Ican get inside. The only thing I
can do is replace the whole manifoldassembly. And like I said, that
part is nowhere to be found onthe internet. Yeah, so I was
looking at possibly, is there anytype of like waterproof repair tape or epaxi

(13:33):
that I can apply to the outsideto you know, make a temporary sense.
Yeah, there's a couple of products. And yeah, there's a couple
of things. There is a productcalled rescue tape, which in your case,
I don't think will work, butI'll just tell you what it is.
It is almost there's no adhesive onrescue tape. It is a pliable,

(13:56):
stretchable rubber that's maybe three cores ofan inch wide that bonds to itself.
So when you say non serviceable,I don't even know if you could
get that wrapped around it to createthat seal. But file that in your
head for a second. That's rescuetape. The other thing I was thinking,

(14:18):
in fact when you first started talkingwas some of the JB. Weld
products, And there's a JB.Weld epoxy product that comes in a solid
material, So there's the the resinand the hardener that you actually can can

(14:41):
mix. It's pliable, with almosta little thicker than like a real thick
pancake batter. Yeah, so that'ssomething I've used that. You're probably gonna
have to scuff up that manifold alittle bit to make sure we got good
adhesion. There's also a product. There's also a probably called PC seven.

(15:05):
I forget who the manufacturer of thatis. It's kind of a paste,
a resin and a POxy paste thatyou mix up. I've used that multiple
times with good success, and I'dprobably go to one of those two products
before I tried anything else. They'reboth very efficient. You know, you

(15:26):
think I should cry the rescue tapefirst before I I don't know if the
rescue tape is really going to workor not. So where I would use
rescue rescue tape. If I tokeep copper pipe that had a pinhole in
it and it was an emergency atnight, I could take the rescue tape
and I could actually wrap that pipecovered that pin hole. It would adhere

(15:50):
to itself, it would stop theleak. If I had a radiator hose
that split, I could take rescuetape and wrap that and it would stop.
If I had a garden os,same thing. So I don't know
if you can get it around itenough. I just don't know. If
you go to the hardware store andask them about the rescue tape. Take

(16:10):
a look at you. You'll justbe able to say if that's going to
work or not work. Okay, and these are safe, I'm drinking water
applications. Yes. In fact, there's also Duro adhesives. They make an
actual plumbers of POxy. I haven'tused that one, but that's another option
for you. Okay, great,I will definitely try some of these.

(16:34):
Now, can I ask you anotherquick question? Yeah, I have a
heat and glow fireplace insert and partof the gas supply line takes a detour
through the great outdoors for about eighteeninches or so. Unfore it returns back
inside through the brick wall. AndI applied some rustolium rusty metal primer when

(16:56):
it was installed many moons ago.I noticed this star to rest and I
was wondering what you recommend I applyto stop the rest, and perhaps you
know beef up. It's it's structuralintegrity. Yeah, there is a product
used a lot not a motive industry, and you'll find it at auto automotive

(17:18):
shops and also hardware stores. It'scalled rust neutralizer and it's it's not a
pain. It's actually a chemical thatcreates a chemical reaction and seals the rust
into the metal. It's great stuff. It turns it black. You could

(17:38):
paint over it if you want.It would actually even function as a primer.
But it will stop and seal rustin the metal. Okay, And
are there any tricks or tips forprepping it. It's the easiest thing in

(17:59):
the world to use. I'm surprisedmore people I talk about this a lot.
It's like it's like the greatest easiestproduct to use in a world.
You can get it where you brushit on, no preps necessary. In
fact, it's you know, ifit's the only prep would be as if
it was really heavily rusted and itwould be like a crusty rust you know,

(18:21):
calcification, then you would have towire brush it or sand it.
But just surface rust or pitted ruston on on metal, there is no
prep. You clean little soap andwater, leat it dry and just either
spray or brush the There's a coupleof amount rust neutralizer, rust reformers another
one, and it literally steals itin and functions as a primer. Like

(18:45):
I said, but I don't needto put any top coat on it.
If I don't want to. Youdon't have to know ther Okay, great,
great, Hey, that sounds good. Geary sounds every simple too.
I like that. That's an easyone. Thanks so much for your ideas,
and I really appreciate your wisdom.Thank you, sir. Take care.

(19:07):
All right, let's take a littlebreak. It's twelve twenty nine and
we do have a couple lines open. Donovan's will be in to talk about
your car. That'll be at oneo'clock. But in the meantime it's a
little home improvement. And here's thephone number. It's a five one three
seven four nine fifty five hundred. Those lines are open. You're at home

(19:30):
with Gary Salvan right here on fiftyfive KRC DE talk station cat Sean Hennity
weekdays at three on fifty five KRCand online at fifty five KRC dot com.
All right, back ahead, itwe go twelve thirty four on your
Saturday at home with Gary Sullivan.Again our number. If you've got a

(19:51):
question regarding your home, feel freeto grab a line. It's a five
one three seven four nine fifty fivehundred. And let's go to Dick.
Dick, welcome, how you doing. Yes, they're fine. Thank you.
I got a question. Is thereanything you can use to clean z
brick underneath the fireplace above the fireplace. It's been in there since about seventy

(20:18):
six somewhere in there. Sure.Sure. So when you say clean,
what do you got smoke stains onit? Yeah? Smoke stains? Okay,
Yeah, there's a couple of thingsyou can use because it's still kind
of a brick. It's more ofa veneer, right that's glued on.
Yeah, right, Okay. Sothe old stalwart, the old standby cleaner

(20:41):
for smoke stains is tri sodium phosphate. Now a lot of the tri sodium
phosphate is now called TSP and it'sactually phosphate free but still does good job
removing smoke stains. You can getit at hardware stores. It's a powder.
The direction will be on there tomix it with water and then you

(21:04):
know, the bad news is it'sit's it's kind of messy. You're gonna
have to want to You're gonna wantto put drop cloths down on the floor.
You're gonna take that solution, weargoggles too, rubber gloves probably,
and get a real stiff scrub brushprobably like those brown woody fiber scrub brushes,

(21:25):
maybe with just the bristles, maybethree cords of an inch, so
short bristles where you can really scrubthat. You can test it on the
Z brick if you want down ina corner. It shouldn't hurt the Z
brick at all. But I alwaystell people to test it on the surface
anyway to scrub away some of theTSP is also no rents, so you

(21:47):
just kind of just take a clothand dry it off. But it's going
to take some elbow grease dick andthat. Like I said, that's the
old standby is TSP. They're they'rethere's a specialty product out there now that
can do it a little bit moreexpensive. It's called paint and Peel.

(22:08):
It's made by a company called ChimneyRX. And you brush a very thick
coat of this onto the brick. And I would test this again. I
don't think it's gonna bother, butit's like you can't use this on any
painted surfaces or anything along those lines. You literally paint a real thick film

(22:33):
over the smoke stains. I knowthis is going to sound weird. You
let it dry overnight and you canliterally with your finger nail pick the corner
of that and peel that off andyou will peel the smoke stain away.
Also, so two different products, one being very easy and certainly a lot

(22:55):
more expensive, and they're availed thatone's availed online or do it best hardware
stores. And the old standby againis the tri sodium phosphate, which,
like I said, that will requirea little bit of work, but smoke
stains are difficult to remove. Butagain going back to the trisodium phosphate,

(23:23):
if you have, you know,at one time experience like a kitchen fire
and you get smoke on the walls, or again a lot of times we
find it around fireplaces where you getback drafts of smoke and you get a
stain on whether it's brick or whetherit's tile. The trisodium phosphate does as
good a job as anything and removingit. So give one of those a

(23:48):
try. I think I feel certainyou'll have success. Is just a matter
of how little you want to spend, but how hard you want to work.
Isn't that always the case? Allright? Again, you got the
phone number, you can grab aline. I was talking about the grout
cleaning before using a druma tool, and a couple of people had asked me
about the I'd mentioned the seiler,probably the in there's there's a I think

(24:15):
it's called nine groud sealer. Imight have the numbers wrong because they make
a whole list of products four oneone, nine one one. I think
they're groud sealers nine one one. It's a fifteen year grout sealer that is
sprayed onto the grout lines. Thebeauty of this particular product is you don't

(24:38):
have to wipe the residue off thetile no matter what type of groud sealer
you're using. Uh, please reador catch the video on their website of
how to use that. Because they'rethey're penetrating groud sealers, meaning when it's

(25:00):
sprayed onto the ground, it's penetratinginto the ground, creating a ceilant and
in the overspray that's laying on aa ceramic floor, it can't penetrate,
so in a lot of cases, before it evaporates, it dries, and
when it dries, it leaves afilm over the ceramic and it's very noticeable.

(25:26):
So if read to make sure youknow which one you got. But
the one I was just recommending andtalking about you do not have to worry
about wiping it off the surface ofceramic tile. It actually evaporates very quickly,
penetrate into grout very quickly, andyou can generously spray it up and

(25:48):
down the grout lining whatever gets onthe on the tile, no worries.
All right, So you've got thephone number again, it's eight hundred eight
two three eight two five five, and you can go ahead. Didn't grab
a phone line. One of thethings I was going to talk about today
was also, you know, yes, last week we talked in fact,

(26:10):
if you miss that show, youcan pick up the podcast on the iHeart
app just it's at Home with GarySalvin. We kind of redid the whole
garage. We were talking about storage, We were talking about floor different coverings
and stains and everything. And oneof the things I wrote down today is
what about the laundry room. Ifyou have a laundry room. You know,
the older homes just had the washingmachine and the dryer that's in the

(26:34):
basement. So newer homes we startedhaving laundry rooms, and then what kind
of shape is that laundry room. We've had laundry rooms upstairs now for a
number of years, maybe fifty yearsor so, and updating a laundry room,
i'd start probably looking at either cabinetry, if you have any cabinetry,

(26:56):
or shelving, paint, countertops, flooring, and lighting. Now I don't
know about you, but you're probablylooking at and your going, Gary,
I'm not going to spend a fortuneon, you know, making a nice,
beautiful laundry room. And that's fine. I'm not saying you have to.

(27:17):
But there's been some developments in differentproducts that really allow you to update
the look of that launder room andnot spending a lot of money. For
instance, the lighting itself. Ifyou, I don't know, have just
a light fixture and you had incandescentbulbs, maybe it's led. Maybe you

(27:38):
had four foot two fluorescent bulbs.Maybe we're going LED fixture in there,
and man, does it make ahuge difference. Also, the countertops.
You hear me talk about the dicecoatings. If you're in the laundering room,
you got a pink for Micah countertopand you've had it there for thirty

(28:00):
five years and it's dated, it'sstained, but it's still a solid surface.
Check out the spreadstone countertop kit aboutforty square feet for you know,
one undred and fifty hundred and eightybucks. I'm just you know, that's
about the price. Standing it down, putting on two coats of the spread

(28:23):
stone, you can make that countertopliterally look like a coreon. Now they've
got it where you can also makeit look like granite. You can make
it look like marble. They gotone called Marble Dream. They've got one,
you know, the granite countertop.I think it's called Lux Granite Lux
countertop. But man, if youcan put a different light in that launder

(28:45):
room, put in a coating onthat countertop and a coat of paint on
the walls, you'll make a hugedifference in a launder room. Now the
cantrios talking about sure we can cleanit guardsmen cleaner or a millsit cleaner.

(29:06):
You can come back and you couldpaint them, paint the countertops, or
paint the cabinets. So I guesswhat I'm saying is, when you're talking
about redoing a room, there aresome rooms you know you're going to go
maybe first class on as many thingsas you can. A laundry room,
you just want to clean it upa little bit you want to update it.

(29:30):
It doesn't have to be the youknow, doesn't have to be the
toash mall. It's a good functioningroom that gets a whole bunch of use.
So check out a couple of thoseproducts, and you know it could
be a good weekend project to do. At least get off to a good
start, maybe a couple of weekendsif you're changing the light fixtures and clean

(29:52):
the cabinets and then doing like tospreadstone on the countertop. Kits. All
right, it's five to one tothree, fifty five hundred, will continue,
Jim, you'll be up first. You're at home with Gary Sullivan,
all right here on fifty five KRCdetalk station. Don't miss any of your
favorite shows. Get the podcast onthe iHeartRadio app at fifty five KRC dot

(30:15):
com. All right, back atit. We go twelve minutes before the
one o'clock hour, and then we'lltake care of your car as we work
our way through another weekend. Ifyou'd like to join us, do so.
We've got a couple open lines inJim, welcome, how are you.
I'm doing, wonderful area. I'mgood, afternoon afternoon. I've got

(30:38):
a question on my they look theyhad to clean the sot off the glass
door on fireplace. Yes, yep, yep, they do, they do.
And actually what does it is?Lie, believe it or not.
And I'm not telling you a rushout in man Lie. But there if
you go to the hardware store, you know, every little hardware, even

(30:59):
a little low hardware store. Theygot four six feet a different fireplace,
tools and some different things. They'vegot a little fireplace glass door cleaner.
It's probably ten ounces. This stuffis unbelievable when you spray it on.
So you do it kind of justlike regular glass cleaner. Jim, you

(31:23):
spray it on. I'd wear rubbergloves, though I don't think I ever
did, but I think it tellsyou to. You spray it on.
I'd let it sit for like aminute, No longer. You don't have
to leave it sit on for likefive minutes. Just spray it on.
Let's sit for a minute or two. Take a paper towel, and I
don't care if those things are absolutelypitch black. It'll clean those things up

(31:47):
just like regular glass. It doesa phenomenal job. I mean I could
almost take one of those all thosepaint sprapers. I mean, this is
not taller. I can take oneof those paint but I was a very
scrash in the glass. Yeah.Yeah, Well, this stuff is made
and it's a it's it's it's apercentage of lie that's in this and I'm

(32:08):
I'm serious. It's like just cleaninga mirror in the bathroom. You spray
it on, give it a minuteto work, and just literally just wipe
it off. I love that Jael'sCraven Clanser. I was, you know,
kind of like I was afraid totry it before I asked you first,
don't eat it. I was thinkingabout trying some of that. Yeah,

(32:29):
you know what, I I don'tknow on that. I give it
you got some Yeah, I lovethat product. Yeah, I've used that
that cream cleanser by Jaws. Ibet I've used it in five different locations
that were problem areas, and Iagree with you, it has not disappointed.

(32:51):
But I don't know if it'll workon that. But man, if
you've got it, give it atry and let me know how that works
out, because that's kind of turnedand into one of my go to products.
I mean, I was, Iwas, I was kind of I
was kind of I mean, Iwas like it. I was just kind
of afraid to try out on thatfire glass because I don't think I can
get a fire glass replacement, youknow, for well, you know what

(33:15):
you do on that gym is godown in a you know, lower left
hand or right hand corner, inthe corner and just try a little circle.
I don't know why it would hurtfire glass anymore than it would hurt
you know, a porcelain finish. And if it doesn't, though, get
some of the glass fireplace door cleaner. But that Jaws cream cleanser may work.

(33:40):
I mean, give it a tryand let us know. But otherwise
just get to your local hardware storeand get that glass door cleaner. And
it does work fantastic. Well,we're going to find out. I'll go
all right, Joels, very good, let me know, take care,
thank you. It won't be long. I know some of us, especially

(34:02):
today in Cincinnati, that me thattemperature isn't glorious, but it's coming.
It's coming this week. We're gonnaget some fifties and maybe sort is very
nice right now. There's nothing wrongwith that, no, which kind of
reminds me of trying to get aheadof things. You know, last week
we chatted long and hard about organizinga garage in different things. But another

(34:27):
thing I don't know. If youtake the screens out of your house.
I think that used to be abig deal, I would say in the
last twenty five years, not somuch. It's like, the screens are
in the windows, and they stayin the windows. However, they're gonna
last longer if you pull them outin the wintertime, and even if you
don't. You know that fiberglass screeningthat's in the windows has a lifespan of

(34:52):
about twelve years, and it's afabric, so it starts wearing. So
if you got like a a blackfiberglass, you start getting like a whitish
film on that's telling you that it'swearing. And why am I talking about
I'm talking about that because right now, you know, when today the weather's

(35:13):
night's fine, go do what youneed to do. But when it gets
cool again and cold again and youhave pulled those screens, it's a great
time of year, you know thatFebruary March April time a year before we
got the windows open to get thoserepaired and repairing screens, whether it's in

(35:34):
a door or a window. It'snot a difficult task, and it's something
you could probably tackle yourself. Ifyou've got a bench, in fact,
a good sized work bench or aping pong table, Maybe put a sheet
down on that latest screen frame onthere. Clamps are the key. You
want to keep that frame is asstable as you can. And then inside

(36:02):
the metal frame, you'll see itlooks like a little rubber gasket that holds
the screen into the frame. Andtake a screwdriver or a scratch awl and
pick that out and pull that gasketout. Then the screen comes right out.

(36:22):
When you get the fiberglass screen, you lay that over the surface of
the frame. Now those gaskets thatyou just pulled out, they come in
different sizes, so when you gothe hardware store there's going to be about
six different whists of those. Sobring the old gasket with you. Don't
reuse it. They're brittle and they'rethey're not meant to be reused, So

(36:44):
don't even go down that road. When you get the right sized gasket and
you get it home, you startit up in the corner and you get
a it's called a spline spl iny a spline tool, and it looks
like a pizza cutter. It's gota plastic wheel and it's got two one

(37:06):
on each side to the different sizes, and you literally just push that spline
or gasket down into the frame whichis holding the screen intact. And then
you smooth out the screen and yougo to the bottom, and you smooth
out the screen, you go tothe top. That's it. I mean,
it'll take you a little bit longerto do the first one, but

(37:29):
once you get the hang of it, you're going to you'll be able to
zip through a few of them andchange out that old screen. So don't
let it get torn, don't letit start being unsightly. When you start
seeing that whitish fabric showing through,it's time to go ahead and get those
changed out. Now, when yougo to the hardware store, you're gonna

(37:51):
have choices unscreening too. One isyou'll have a black fiberglass and then you'll
have a gray fiberglass. I preferthe black. The gray has a little
bit of a glare to it.So in other words, if you got
a nice view at your backyard orsomething, and you want to have a

(38:14):
crisper view, I would use theblack fiberglass, don't really care. You
can use the gray. And thendo you want to use fiberglass or aluminum,
I'll tell you the aluminum more difficultto install versus the one I just
described on installation, so you know, and there's nothing perfect. The fiberglass

(38:35):
is more subject I guess, thetearing than an aluminum would more subject to
stretching a little bit versus aluminum. But aluminum is, you know, a
little bit more of a challenge togo ahead and install. You won't install
it is quite as easily as Imade it sound. But again, twelve
to fifteen year Lifeman on fiberglass screening. And again I'm not saying just change

(39:00):
them willy nilly or anything, butif you are starting to see that fabric
were a little bit, it's aproject you can tackle. And if you
want to let more light in yourhome on those gloomy days, to just
keep those screens out and let thelight shine through, and go ahead and
rescreen them. And then when we'refor sure it's spring, and go ahead

(39:22):
and put those screens back in thewindow and you'll be set for another season.
And open up the windows. Allright, Danny boy, thank you
very much. It's a good Saturday. My goodness, it was busy today.
