Let nature do the rest. Life'sdirty clean easy Weddinforget dot com and we
think that for their sponsorship, andI thank you for joining us as we
talk a little bit about our homes. Man, I'll tell you what.
Yesterday was a busy, busy, busy day and went out and when we

(01:11):
went to this Catherine, it wasprobably the first ten to fifteen minutes was
answering four or five questions about homeimprovement. And we were walking away and
I said to my wife, it'sit's springtime. It's spring time, so
we're all starting to work around ourhomes. And well, we'll take your
calls. It's eight hundred eight twothree eight two five five, and Danny'll

(01:37):
take your call and he'll get youon the show and we'll talk about your
issues and give you some suggestion. So again it's eight hundred eight two three
eight two five five. Go aheadand grab a line. All right,
Well, there's more to do thanjust the outside of your home. There's
plenty of things to work on theinside. And we all in one of

(02:00):
those phases right now where anything's breaking. Don't you just love that? Or
you know, the washer goes andthen the water heater goes, and then
the drains clogged. Mine's not thatbad, but I do have a water
heater that's failing, and I don'thave a slow running drain. But I
was reading some articles again on smells, slow running drains. A real buzzword

(02:24):
in drains right now is maintenance. If we can maintain the drains, we
can avoid problems, you know,if we keep them free flowing. And
the whole article is really based onmaintenance and smells. You know, we
talk a lot about the smells thatoccur, especially in vanity drains now because

(02:51):
so many of the products that weuse contain a gel a sticky substance shaving
creams our gel, hair gels, toothpaste, our gels, deodorants, our
gels, and that gels when wewash our hands, et cetera. And
they cling to the side of thepipe, and that too, is a
sticky jel substance that's stuck to theside of the pipe and it kind of

(03:15):
clings to bacteria. Bacteria. Isit begins to grow, it begins to
create an odor, and so howdo we do that? Well, that
odor, that bacteria is gonna beone in two places. It's going to
be in the main pipe, themain drain pipe, or an area we
often overlook is the overflow. Soif you stand straight in front of the

(03:42):
vanity and you look straight down onthe upper endside of that ball, you'll
probably see a little slot or alittle circle, And that's in case the
water gets too high, the waterwill go back and won't overflow, it'll
go back into the drain. Andso anyway, the bottom line here is
if that begins to have an odor, it probably is the bacteria that's at

(04:08):
one time washed up into that oris it coming from the trap itself and
putting bleach in there will kill bacteriaand eliminate the smell. And also using
like a cascade liquid dishwasher scorting someof that down there. That detergent will

(04:30):
eliminate that also. And then toaddress the whole drain issue, there's a
lot and we talk about them. You know, different enzymes, different bacilius,
which is a bacteria. It's agood bacteria culture bacteria that we eat
the bad bacteria. So if weclean out the overflow, that's great.

(04:54):
And then we get some of theenzyme drain cleaners. It's either a powder
or liquid you mixed with warm water. You let's sit for a few minutes
to activate, and you pour itdown the drain. Don't use it for
about twelve hours and it'll eat awaythat bacteria and again it smells, the
go away. Partial build ups willgo away. And yeah, you might

(05:14):
need to do that, you know, every three months or so would be
more than enough. But that's agood way to maintain the drains. All
right, let's go to the phones. We've got Tom. Tom welcome,
Hey, good morning, garyn So. I have an old drafty house and

(05:35):
been implementing a lot of your tricksto eliminate some of those drafts. Over
the winter for sate forciate your advice. And one of my last items is
my garage door. Demand door notnot the overhead, Okay. It's a

(05:56):
detached garage, so it leads intoan unconditioned and breezeway between the garage and
the house. Okay. And it'sreally tight and straight on the hinge side,
but the top of the door oppositethe hinge blows out a good inch

(06:17):
and I've tried some things to tryto straighten it out and nothing's working.
I'm curious if you have any tips. So did you try like building out
the the hinge side. In otherwords, if you loosen the screws in
the hinge hinges, I should say, can you move that door into position

(06:40):
where you want it? Well?It the bottom of the door opposite the
hinge is it's in a good position. It's really just over time the door
is bowed, so that okay.So in other words, if you loosen

(07:03):
the hinges, no matter what youdo, it's not going to fit in
that door square right at its currentshape its current shape. So we got
to work on reconfiguring the door. And before we do that, is this
a year round problem or is thatdoor expanding and contracting seasonally, because mine,

(07:32):
mine does. Yeah, there's timesin the summertime where I have to
lift up on the handle to getit in its keeper to lock it,
not to close it, but tolock it. And in the winter time
it works like it's perfect. Soit's expanding, it's moving, and it's

(07:56):
really not a problem. But Ijust want to show you that doors do
expand and contract. And then theproblem is if you start cutting the door
to make it fit in the wintertime, it likely won't fit in the summertime.
And sometimes it even becomes a matterof the framing and everything else.

(08:20):
So do you know the answer tothat question? I mean, is it
is it? Does it do ityear round? By band a year?
About a half a year and ahalf, Okay, I guess I'll have
to watch it more closely this summer. I think that's what I would do.
And then just again, you know, one of the things too for
other people where the door or theframe is not actually born boeing, you

(08:46):
know, loosening the hinges and justplaying with the door, lifting it by
the handle and seeing if it fitsin that frame properly, and if it
does, if you can get itwhere it's moving, you know, like
if it's falling down at the topand there's space at the bottom, you
loosen those hinges and you kick itout where you can lift it into the

(09:07):
top part of the door frame, and then you can put some sometimes it's
just toothpicks or a penny behind thehinge and then tighten the screws and it
keeps it, you know, inshape. But once they're bowed, you
got to really be careful not tocut that door to make it fit today

(09:31):
because it may not fit in July. Yeah, it's pretty evident, you
know, looking at a profile ofthe door from the from the edge of
it, that the top corner it'sjust bent, you know, it's just
bowed over the years. It seemssomething so well, Yeah, and this

(09:54):
is a metal door with a woodcenter to it. Is that what it
is. It's a solid wood door, solid wood door. I still think
you might have some thermal expansion inthat wood. I'd watch it at least
through this summer and if it ifit maintains its shape that it is today

(10:18):
again, I think we can goahead and maybe get a plane or a
sure form and work on the bottompart of that door. So we have
some lead way to adjust that insidethe frame by loosening the hinges. Okay,
alrighty, but don't do it tillyou till you wait till it gets
warm. I hate to see himmess up the door. Alrighty, wait

(10:43):
to one of those humid summer days. Yeah, yeah, you got your

so he has a list of eachhour of the show and it'll also have

(16:00):
you know what the subject matter isand you might want to take a look
at that. Pretty good a lotof good information there and some pretty interesting
stuff on how that was created,so you might, well it might be
interested in that. Just click podcastand you're on your way. So what
are you going to work on thisspring? One of the things we talk

(16:25):
a lot about is our deck, and certainly inspecting a deck before we start
using it in the spring and summertime. It's always a good idea, especially
if you've got the older type deckI'm talking about as ten fifteen years.
You might have tried to maintain it, but you know, we're all busy,
and we skip a year, weskip more than one year, we
skip more than just one year ortwo years. Or three years, and

(16:49):
over time the deck starts having loosescrews, protruding nails, maybe the fasteners
that are holding up the joist tobecome corroded, we get rotten wood on
the boards. So a good inspectionthis time of year is really needed and

(17:14):
it doesn't take long. But whetheryou have big ones at your home or
little ones at your house, anyof those problems potentially could be an issue.
So probably the most frequent one isolder decks with nails and corroded fasters
are probably two of the biggest ones. And if you have nails that are

(17:37):
loose on the floorboards, just geta you know, stainless steel or a
titanium deck screw, heavy galvanized ifyou want, and just run it right
next to that nail and then goahead and set that nail. It's not
going to come back up. Thatscrew is going to pull that board down,
and those screws are not going towork their way back up. We

(17:59):
use regular nails with little spirals onit and found out we probably should really
screw that deck board down because itcontains water. And as I was talking
about the door, different times ofthe year you get doors that expand and
they shrink, and so does thewood on the deck. That's why when
you're installing pressure treated wood deck, you want to butt those boards up as

(18:26):
tight as you possibly can because youknow you're usually doing it in the summertime,
number one, and it's still wetfrom the mill, so it's going
to shrink, so the gap willtake care of itself. When you're doing
composite decking, that's the wood, flower and plastic and it's capped with a

(18:48):
PVC. You want to create aspace, you can take like a eight
tenpenny nail and use that as yourspacer. You're going to have to create
the space because it's a more stableproduct. All right. Our phone number

about zolar pumps for years now beingthe gold standard and some pumps and battery

(21:00):

Pumps dot com. Well, theysay an ounce of prevention is worth a
pound of cure, and that's truewhen it comes to preventing a basement flood.
Hey, Gary Salvin here from myfriends at Rota Ruter Plumbing and Water
Cleanup. They're the some pump expertsand can install backup some pump that'll prevent
basement flooding even during a power outage. And if your primary pump is getting

(21:45):
up in the years, well RotoRuter can replace that too. Trust me
a lot cheaper than a flooded basement. Called Roto Router at one eight hundred
Get roto today. All right, let's get back to work. You're at

(22:22):
home with Carrie Sullivan. Let megive you the phone number you can doll
in and you can talk about yourhome project. It's eight hundred eight two
three eight two five five. Goahead and grab a line. We've got
a couple open. Actually we've gotthem all open, so it's eight hundred
eight two three eight two five five. We're talking about odors and sinks,

(22:42):
and we're talking about how the bacteriacollects and the pipes and in the overflow
holes in things along those lines. And sometimes that's sometimes the drains run slow.
Sometimes there's just a little odor.Kind of the same things kind of
going on. I talked about theenzyme cleaners. It talked about just putting

(23:03):
bleached down the overflow hole, that'llhelp kill that bacteria. But if you
do have an area where or adrain that is just partially blocked, in
other words, it doesn't have agood swirl, right, It just kind
of sits there and lumbers away,if you will, and eventually the water
disappears. But there's a lot ofways to physically mechanically clean that trap out.

(23:30):
And for years I've talked about aproduct like Zippit, which is a
long thirty inch plastic I guess youcall it a strip, and it's got
a little barb sticking out its snag'shair and some gunk that could be in
the u in the drain, especiallywhere you got that stopper likes to wrap

(23:52):
around that and it can just costthings to run a little slower. Well,
that zipp it is one way.Other way is to try it.
They have a pressure washer for drains, which is a cool little device.
It's got a couple couple adapters. You'll take off the air raider on the

(24:15):
bathroom sink, and there's several differentsizes and all that stuff, and they
got the adapters where this coupler willfit where the air raidor did. So
you take the aer rator off,you screw this on. It's got like
a little eighth inch white plastic tubingand it's got at the end it almost
looks like a flexible dental pick.Uh huh, sounds good. Done it.

(24:37):
So it kind of functions as alittle mini power washer. You can
feed it down between the outer rimor the inner outer rim of the drain
and feed it down, feed itdown, turn the water on, hold
on to it because there's a lotof pressure it's going to come out there
and you just kind of blast thepipe clean. You're literally pressure washing the

(25:06):
inside of that drain and if there'ssome physical impediment that's blocking it, this
should kick it loose. So that'sa really good gotta have little tool.
They're inexpensive, they're not that bad. And another thing, and we know
plungers work well. Right, everyhouse probably has a plunger. If you

(25:26):
want to try a plunger, first, fine, do it. Use it.
Just cover up that little hole thatwe keep talking about on the upper
ridge of inside the vanity bowl.Otherwise you're not going to have the suction
that you need. And if youhave standing water, I know a lot
of people, especially in bathtubs, where hair becomes a problem, they'll use

(25:48):
a shop back and they'll literally suckthat water back up and a lot of
times a hair clogged along with it. So another tip for you there.
All right again, it's eight hundredeight two three eight two five five and
we'll bring on Doug and Doug welcome. Hey, thank you very much.
Gary. Gary got a quick question. Had our roof replaced a couple of

(26:11):
years ago, And it's a ranchhome and it had a detached garage and
then they kind of attached it withthe after they got city water. And
everything's fine, except when the raincomes really hard and the wind blows from
a certain direction, we get waterthat leaks down. There's like a chimney
there that they put there. There'sa water that leaks down into the garage

(26:36):
along the chimney and other Every othertime it's fine. So I don't know
if we need to get the rooferback, if I need to just get
up there and put some type ofcalking along the flashing around the chimney.
But it doesn't happen any other timeexcept once in a while when the wind
blows right at the right angle andthe right is hard. Well, one
thing we know is that's that that'snot good. I mean, we don't

(26:57):
want it to continue, even ifthat happens once a year. So you
know, you could call the rooferout. When did you say you had
that roof installed two years ago?Yeah, yeah, and it's done it
from day one or no. Thisis the first time in two years we
had a really hard storm and reallyhigh wind. And that's why I didn't

(27:18):
know if it would like lift itup the shingles or did something. Only
in that unique situation. But Idon't want it to happen again, right
right, Well, you or aroofer are going to get up there and
inspect that to see if you canreally focus on exactly where that entry point
of water is. You don't wantto just go up there, you know,

(27:38):
with a bucket of tar and startlathering everything. You want to really
pinpoint where the issue is. Youknow, it could be it could be
something as simple as a loose shingleand that wind at that certain direction is
just lifting it a little bit andit's sneaking that water in underneath. I
don't know they if they can't seeit or you can't see it, you

(28:02):
can always do a water test whereyou can try and make it leak and
you could really pinpoint where that issueis. Let me ask you this question,
because I would say the number onevulnerable spot would be at the base
of the chimney where the flashing goesto the roof. So the fleshing comes

(28:23):
up, it tucks into the secondrow of mortar and that's where you're flashing
is. And sometimes that does getcompromised, and uh, you know,
some tar you know very well couldmake that patch, but you want to
make sure you're making that patch wherethe actual leak is occurring. So do

(28:45):
you have it? We do findthat's where it is. Is there a
particular product, you know, whenyou say go get I don't want to
just go get generic roof tar becauseanything about that. Do you have a
specific brand? Yeah. So oneof the interesting things is, you know,
roof tar, as crazy as itsounds, is it's really uh.
It can deteriorate with UV rays fromthe sun and it cracks and then you

(29:07):
can have a leak that goes intothe crack of the rooftar. There's one
called GSIL ceiling brushable ceilant, geocel brushable ceilant. It's clear, it's
brushable or it's trillable, whatever youwant to use. And it's like a

(29:29):
clear rubberized membrane that has very verygood UV resistance. It stays pliable,
it doesn't get rigid and crack, and that's what I would recommend using.
Okay, well, thank you verymuch, and I will call the roofer
that you don't want me up onthe roof because that's what's something about.
I'll call the roofer. So thankyou very much, I appreciate it.

(29:51):
You're quite welcome. Thank you, take care, bye bye. And having
said that, there's other products outthere that rufer. You know, you
may tell him to use juice soand it'll say no, I'm using Karnak.
And Karnak is a very good, high quality roofing cement that that again

(30:15):
is a little more impervious to dryingup and cracking and taking a problem and
making a bigger problem. So uh, you know, you can talk to
the roofer, but he's probably alreadyuh step or two ahead of you,
at least, I hope. Soall right, So that's the roofing.
And one of the things I hadMark today is about chimneys. A lot

(30:40):
of people still using the fireplaces. It's been cold last couple of days,
and it'll be real nice and warmtomorrow probably, and you know, soak
goes and but we're getting near theend of the heating season and you need
to think about well, between nowand October, you're gonna want to get
it cleaned again. And really,if you jump on that a little early,

(31:02):
then you know, I have toworry about. You can get an
inspection of how the winter burning seasonwent. You can get an inspection of
the top of the chimney, thecrownsh which is a concrete slab. Make
sure there's no cracks in that forthe spring showers and if they penetrate through

(31:22):
that crown wash and end up inthe attic the water, that's not good.
You can also inspect the chimney cap, make sure that's in good shape
from the spring winds and rains, and keep the summertime birds the chimney swallows
from getting down into the chimney. So really an excellent time, you know
to have that chimney inspector is rightafter the fire burning season and get there

(31:48):
and clean it, see if there'sbeen any damage, tighten up from a
water perspective, tighten making sure thechimney cap is intact. So put that
on your note. I know, usually at that time of the year we're
focusing on mowing grass and patching concreteand things like that, but there's that

(32:08):
big masonry surface called a chimney thatit's a good time to give that an
inspection and a cleanup and some youknow, some repair if needed. So
you can kind of put that onyour list, all right. Our phone

let's get busy. You're at homewith Gary Salvin talking a little home
improvement. You can grab a phoneline and love to talk to you about
your project. And let's go toBill. Bill Welcome, Hello, good
morning morning. I have a questionabout the Wet and Forget product. I
got a basically a concrete patio andit's more or less on one side's concrete

(35:37):
and then there's a wood deck thatbuilt that's built off of that, and
it's the older deck and it's theconcrete. It's older also, And I
was going to use the wet andForget product. But can I use that
on the concrete and the wood atthe same time or two I do?
I got to get two different bottlesfor that. No, you can use
it at the same time, okay, yeah, yeah, And again they're

(36:00):
both in sunny locations, right orat least the sun yea, yeah,
yeah, it's it's right out inthe backyard. There's no trees around it.
Okay, yeah, you should begood to go. You know,
it takes it takes about six weeks. You spray it on there, it
takes about six weeks and everything justuh you'll think nothing's going on for about
three weeks, and then it'll startfading and one day you'll get up and

(36:22):
it'll be gone. It sounds crazy, but that's what happens to it.
It works. Well. Yeah,I'm excited to use that. I heard
it about on your show and it'ssomething I want to look into. I
never used theme thing like this before. With this deck and concrete area.
How much do you think if Ican is there a wet and forget puck,

(36:43):
I can look to like a waterhose because it's a it's a forty
by thirteen concrete U lap and thenthe deck. I don't know it's the
it's they're both decent sides. Ijust want to get a water hose or
a pump spray or what do youthink I can? Well, they've got
a concentrate that you can mix itinto a pump sprayer if you want.

(37:05):
It holds three gallons, or theydo have one where you can connect it
right to the water hose. Itdoes that bottle will do twenty five hundred
square feet, it'll disperse the watertwenty to twenty five feet. And I
mean that's easy peasy, right,I mean there's no mix and know anything,

(37:27):
just took it up to the gardenhose and go, yeah, is
the is the one that's already forthe water hose? Is that just as
powerful as to concentrate because oh yeah, I'm really really soak this and let
it set and probably have two applicationsor is that just you don't need two
applications, But there's a couple ofthings you might want to do when you

(37:51):
apply it. So you know, obviously it's a liquid, so we don't
want to do it when it's indirect sunlight and ninety five degrees. Uh
So, I mean really, whenyou're thinking about this time of year,
it works with the sun and therain, so the rain keeps it activated.
Goodness knows, this time of yearwe have rain, we have sunshine,

(38:13):
and we don't have hot surfaces,so we don't have as much evaporation.
See you get a day in thesixties this time of year, that
would be like, that'd be perfect, that'd be perfect to apply it.
Yeah, that's completely sunny where I'mat now. I'll live in Cincinnati.
And that was another question. Wouldit be effective if I used it at

(38:36):
night or towards the end of theday, or just use it at a
regular day as it right now.Yeah, as of right now would be
just perfect. It really would youget a day And not to say for
people listening, not to say, can't use it in the summer, because
that's probably when most people do useit. But if you're going to use
it in the summer, you wouldn'tdo it kind of on a cloudy day.
So it's all about minimizing the evaporationof it. If you do it

(39:00):
on a cloudy day, it's goingto evaporate not as much, not nearly
as much as a sunny day.Or if you got a sunny day right
now and it's in the sixties andseventies, you're not gonna have much evaporation
and hit it then. So yeah, but it'll work either way. What
about do you think it'd be goodor helpful if I pressure washed the area

(39:23):
first and then apply the wed andforget or what it matters, doesn't This
project is about as easy as itcomes, Bill, And I know when
I first started talking to the people, wait and forget, they're telling you
spray it on in four to sixweeks. You know, it's it dissipates,
it's gone. I'm going like,this can't be this can't be right.

(39:45):
Nothing. Nothing's that easy, butit really is. It's a matter
of just applying the product and stayout of its way and between the rain
and the sunshine. Probably the biggestthing you got to do is be patient
because you know you'll be going outthere three and a half weeks that I

(40:07):
don't see anything. He told mei'd see something. Well, you know
what, I've used a wedding forgetwithin three days. I had some reaction.
I've used wedd and forget where it'sbeen eight weeks before it was gone.
So it really depends on you know, your your partner here is mother
nature. You just get it onin a nice even wedding down of the

(40:27):
surface and it'll do its thing.Oh good, And is it well,
we don't have to use that area. I can go to the front,
but we have two indoor cats. And if we walk through that area,
say the next day, twenty fourhours after it's applied or sprayed, is
it any chemical is going to harmthe animals? Like no, read read

(40:51):
the caution label, But the answeris no. Once has stride your fuck?
Okay, yeah, okay, yeahit can it's regular way, but
we can change, you know, where do we walk in? That's sure,
sure, sure you can walk onit to It doesn't matter really,
it's just a matter of just wettingit down. I did the sidewalks in
the front of the house. Firstof all, they were gray. They

(41:14):
weren't moldy. I thought they werejust dirty. And I was talking to
the wedding forget people and saying,no, no, that's like a mild
mildew or like a fungus, andjust don't use the pressure washer. Spray
the wedding forget on a sidewalk, and I'm like, again, geez,
this is like crazy easy. AndI did and again. It was about

(41:37):
six weeks and it was just itwas just clean. It was. It
was very noticeable in the neighborhood. There was one side on the other side
of the driveway where there's only aboutone block of sidewalk that's really on my
property. The bulk of it isto the left of the driveway, and
I didn't do that one block tothe right of the driveway. And it

(42:00):
was night and day. It wasa big difference. Well, I'm excited
as far as her bottle, what'sthe average price range for that, I
think you're around thirty five to fortydollars for forty or for twenty five hundred
square feet for the hose end,and the concentrates a little bit cheaper.

(42:24):
I think it's like twenty nine dollarsa gallon. I don't know how much
coverage that is off the top ofmy head. And you got to mix
it and it's usually in a uh, you'd mix it in like a three
gallon tanks prayer. Yeah, that'swhat I have. I'm I'm just economically
going through it and seeing, youknow, see them it works. I'm

(42:45):
just I'm excited to use it becauseI just think it's too easy. Yeah,
well you you're you're in the sameboat I was once. Use it.
You'll be a believer. So thankyou much. Good look you bet
take care of bill. Uh huh. But yeah, it is. It

(43:06):
really is that easy. Like Isaid, the only the only time you'd
need to applications is if you reallyhad an infestation of washing where it's real
thick, like three quarters of aninch thick, you might have to do
that a couple times, or ifyou happen to put it down on a
really really bright sunny day and itwas ninety five degrees and you put it

(43:32):
down and probably had some evaporation,a lot of evaporation, and it didn't
really rain for the next four orfive weeks. You might do a second
application and also, but normally justwet it and forget it. All right,
