Speaker 1 (00:32):
Well, you're at home with Gary Salvin, another weekend getting
a few projects done around the home. This hours brought
to you by Easy Breathe and October is air Quality
Awareness Month and right now you can get twenty percent
off an easy Breathe ventilation system during the entire month
of October. Easy Breathe is also giving two free U
ministats with every Easy Breathe purchase. And don't wait, you
(00:56):
can check it out online. It's the letter E, the
letter Z and then dot com do it today. And
I've had one in my home. I'm going to guess
almost fifteen years and gets that musty basement t smell
out of my house. So if you have that, that's
another benefit of the Easy Breathe. All right, Uh, you
(01:16):
can join us as we do a little conversation, have
a little conversation. We talked a lot about garage flowers
today and happy to take those calls. But your fall projects,
maybe wrapping up some warmer weather projects. We got a
spot for you. It's eight hundred A two three A
two five five Grab a line and Eric, welcome.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Good morning area.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
It is good to talk with you. I have a
basement wall that every winter when it freezes, a crack appears,
But when the winter's gone and summer coms, the crack disappears.
Is that problem?
Speaker 1 (01:55):
Well? Yeah, so is it a concrete foundation, is a
block foundation or what is it?
Speaker 4 (02:01):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (02:02):
Block? And where is a crack appearing on that wall?
Is it beneath a window, off the corner of a
window or door or anything like that.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Well, it runs midway on the wall for about twelve feet.
The backyard is graded improperly, and I've got dirt to
do that. But before I put that dirt on there,
I wonder if anything else I should do, and if
that cracks a problem. I've had the representative from the
water trooping company come out and he didn't seem to
think it was a problem long as it's ceiling itself
(02:34):
back up when the weather changes.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Yeah, it is below grade then though, right, yes, yeah,
I'll be honest with you. I'm kind of like, if
it's a crack and it's above grade and it's in
your house, I've got an explanation for that. I don't
really have an explanation of why that's going on below grade. Okay,
(02:57):
So it is a little concerning to me only because
I don't know what's causing that. I mean, what is
causing that? And the waterproofing guy can't tell you. The
only person gonna be able to tell you probably is
a structural engineer, you know, can make an assessment on it.
And is it a straight line crack? Is it vertical? Horizontal?
(03:18):
Is it stair stepping?
Speaker 3 (03:20):
Horizontal? About four or five blocks up from the bottoms,
about right in the middle of the wall. And I'm
for him, I said, I like to dig it out
with grabble and there He said, that won't make a difference.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Well, the good news is, quickly, by our assessment without
even seeing it, a horizontal, straight line crack is probably
the best kind of crack to have, all right. Stair
stepping is a little concerning. A vertical crack, is concerning
horizontal not so much, but it is. It is kind
of weird, to be honest with you, that it would
be cracking. I don't know what would be making it crack.
(03:57):
And no leaks, no problem.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Water flowing down there at freezing and then bulging it
in a way.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
Yeah, well, whenever, obviously, whenever there's a crack, the wall
is weakened, So you know, could it become a problem sure,
it could start bulging in. You know, there there's obviously
an issue. I just don't know what's causing it. It
is the least destructive of the cracks, and I know
I'm not answering it, but you know, almost destructional engineer
(04:25):
is really going to be the only one that's really
going to be able to say, yeah, that's probably this,
and this is how you would fix it and stabilize
it so it doesn't get worse. Uh you know, I
mean that would be the the answer answer to it.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
But yeah, got a load of dirt sitting outside, I'm
just going to start throwing it on there. He said.
As long as you run the water away from it,
it may stop and it should be okay.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
So well, obviously, yeah, the the does the does the
crack when it's open? Does it allow water in? Is
there any leakias or anything? Okay, Well, you got good
drainage around the house. You got the least dangerous crack
um And of course I always talk about the killer
g's which is grating. You're addressing that gutter's not being clogged.
(05:13):
I'm assuming they're not, and no plonding of ground water,
so you're going to cover that up with it with
a dirty I think I agree with you. I'd get
those corrected, to make sure that the water is flowing
away from the house. And keep an eye on that crack.
You might even mark it with like a little magic
marker or something to see if it's you know, growing
(05:34):
or extending over the seasons. Just kind of keep an
eye on it.
Speaker 3 (05:39):
Okay, Gary, thank you all right?
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Good enough, Thank you for calling. Appreciate it. We got
a spot for you. It's eight hundred eight two three
eight two five five Joyce. Welcome around the water. So hey, Joyce,
you gotta turn your radio down.
Speaker 5 (05:55):
Okay, I will thank you, all right, you bet, Okay,
I am not well. First of all, I've listened to
you for years.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
I've been doing it for years, I know, and.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
You have you know, your ideas are always excellent. But
I am inquiring about, you know, putting the quoting on
my garage floor. It's a double Clark garage. And I
had a company come in the other day.
Speaker 6 (06:23):
You know.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
He gave me a spiel and everything, and of course
he downplayed every other company. Didn't mention their names. He
just said, you know, all the other companies are not
good blah. Blah blah blah blah. First of all, anytime
I hear that, that always turns me off when they
downplay another company, you know, saying that they're the best
and whatever. Right, he quoted me almost twelve thousand dollars.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
I guess that's why they're really, really, really good.
Speaker 5 (06:55):
That's what he said. That's what he alluded to.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
I was getting ready to say when you when you
were telling me that, I was thinking, there is such
there's so many coatings out for garage floors. It's not
that one company's better than the other. Their quality of
their products can be much better than somebody else. As
you heard the caller from Colorado say, he went with
a polyurrea coating on his garage and it was over
(07:23):
seven thousand dollars. And poly Urea's professionally applied are probably
going to be the more expensive, but there probably are
the best.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
So it depends what you want and really what you need.
Speaker 5 (07:39):
It's in a condo, so you know, whatever I do here,
you know, it doesn't matter. Inside. I just want something
that I know is going to last. I'm not going
to get ripped off, you know, by this company saying
they're the best ever.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Yeah. Yeah, so you're not going to use them regardless. Correct, No,
definitely not.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
I mean, all right, that's fine.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
So do you know I.
Speaker 5 (08:04):
Almost had to kick him out of the house to get.
Speaker 6 (08:06):
Rid of it.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Yeah, well that's no good. No, that's no good. Have
you thought about maybe you've probably heard me talk about
diceh coatings and a product like roller rock. Now that's
a product. You would have to get somebody to do
that for you, but it's relatively simple to apply it lasts.
(08:29):
I mean, you get a good fifteen years of service
out of it. That might be an option for you.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
Okay, are the stones versus flakes or whatever? Which is better?
Speaker 1 (08:42):
This is actually it doesn't have flakes. Do you know
what choreon looks like a choreon countertop?
Speaker 5 (08:52):
Yeah, that's what I have.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
Okay, it kind of looks like a choreon countertop to
be honest with you. Oh okay, And it is slippers resting.
And the hardest part is the preparation work. So you
gotta get rid of you know, the old spots and
the dirt and sometimes if there's a coating, it's got
to be ground off. But yeah, painters a handyman and
(09:18):
then it's two coats of the roller rock and then
a clear seiler on top of that. So you know
that's an option, but you're Urea's and I'm guessing that's
what this fella had, and there's other people that you know,
do those Urea coatings. They're gonna probably be seven thousand
(09:40):
dollars plus. I'm not saying that's bad, it's just do
you need that?
Speaker 5 (09:45):
No?
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Okay, So if you feel that, I would say my
next my next suggestion to you would probably be the
Dice Coatings. Get a handyman first, and you know, call
around see if you can find somebody that would take
care of that for you. And then go on the
go on their website. They got all kinds of videos
(10:07):
on there and everything, and you're probably around two to
three dollars a square foot, so significantly less expensive.
Speaker 5 (10:15):
Right it is? Yeah, And that's at Lows or any
you can.
Speaker 1 (10:19):
Get it on their websites Lows dot com. Uh, it's
on home depot dot com. You can buy it right
at Dice Codings. You can get it on Amazon. It's
not really in too much distribution in stores. It's pretty
much online.
Speaker 5 (10:36):
Okay, I'm in northeast Ohio, you know, fifty miles off
of Cleveland, so you know we can get real old weather. Sure,
is there a website where you can go and compare
the different companies?
Speaker 1 (10:49):
Yeah, well there's a website where you can take a
look at their products, the dice and it's d A I.
Speaker 6 (11:02):
C.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
H Coatings dot com. Okay, and look and just look
for roller Rock. Take a look at the videos. It
would for what you're looking at. I would say, you
don't need the polyureas, and you don't need the kits
of a POxy floor paint with the flakes. I don't
(11:27):
think I'm that's not going to give you the length
of time that you're looking for. You're going to get
four to six years out of those.
Speaker 5 (11:38):
And company had a company out of Cleveland. I've had
him in here a long time ago. Give me an estimate, okay.
And they just sent out a letter and just said
they had this new bargain. And now he's quoting not
quite three thousand dollars for a two cargarate.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Well, you got to find out what he's using. Okay,
that's the key, So ask him what he's using. If
it's a residential epoxy garage floor coating. You know, your
lifespan on that's probably six to seven years. You just
you're just gonna have to do your due diligence. I mean,
obviously the person that's putting it down is important because
(12:16):
the prep is the key, but the product that he's
using is also the key.
Speaker 5 (12:22):
Okay, And what was the name? You said? Epoxy?
Speaker 6 (12:25):
What?
Speaker 5 (12:25):
Now?
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Well, no, I I was saying that that that guy
may be using an epoxy. You just got to find
out there's a POxy and there's polyureas. Uh, that's what
you're gonna have to compare. Your polyureas are going to
last longer, and they're going to be more expensive. The
roller rock that is a stone coating that's rolled on
(12:53):
and again, your epoxy's your standard epoxys five years. Your
probably aurea's probably twenty five years. Your stone coating is
probably fifteen years. You're just gonna have to talk to people,
find out exactly what they're using, get a quote, get
it on paper, and then let's talk. We'll continue at
Home with Gary Sullivan.

to get rid of those. Plus we'll be taking your
call throughout the day. It's eight hundred eight two three
eight two five five Alex welcome.
Speaker 4 (16:12):
Yes, Yes, I have a question. I'm going to put
some gutters that at my house once are damaged, and
I need to know I've never done it before from
a slope and aid and how to join the scenes.
(16:32):
What do I use to join the scenes with?
Speaker 1 (16:36):
Well, there's the slope is usually I believe without double
checking myself, I believe it's like a quarter inch per
ten feet sections. Yeah, yeah, so it's a quarter inch
per ten feet. And when you what are you getting
(16:56):
a five inch gutter?
Speaker 4 (16:59):
Yeah? I think it's a stand in the gutter would
be five inches other?
Speaker 1 (17:01):
Okay? And so are you getting the coupler where the
two pieces slide into the coupler?
Speaker 6 (17:11):
No?
Speaker 4 (17:11):
Should I get that? What's your here to do?
Speaker 1 (17:14):
Well? I mean, how are you gonna connect the two
ten foot sections?
Speaker 4 (17:20):
I was gonna overlap them sly one and said, yet
put some seeling in there.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
Yeah, just get get the coupler. Get the coupler and
it's maybe I don't know, two and a half inches wide,
and it's it's the gutters just slide in and snap
in and then you can put could put some clocking
in there, you know. So so take a look at that.
(17:49):
I'm a little concerned that you're tackling this project, and
i'd watch a couple of videos on doing it to
be honest with you. How are you going to connect
them to the house.
Speaker 4 (18:02):
I noticed they have little hooks and nails at an
angle and they go into the facial board. Yes, that's
how I'm going to do it. I need to know
the space.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
Well, you also need to know exactly what So a
gutter when it's hanging, needs to be anchored with a
bracket is probably the best way. And that bracket would
be screwed through the facia board into the trusses. So
that facie board is only about three quarters of an
(18:34):
inch wide or thick I should say five ace and
that's not enough. You've got to get to the board
behind that. So you're going to have to find out
where the trusses are so you can screw into it. Now,
there's different ways of connecting it. That's why I said,
if you go on YouTube and just google installing gutters,
I think you're you're going to see what I'm talking about.
(18:57):
So there's a couple of things to be concer learned
about when you're hanging the gutters. Okay, one is the
size of the gutter, and you've addressed that at five inches.
The other is the brack or how you're gonna mount
the gutter the quarter inch slope for ten feet and again,
once you put the brackets up, then the gutter's almost
(19:20):
snapping itself in, so getting that slope is a little
bit easier. We'll continue. Deb Meyer Otero exit. She's next.

I've been talking about you know, the cold weather will
be here very soon, maybe tonight. In some areas, windows
they're getting closed, snowing in Wyoming. We're going to be
inside more. Boy, what a pretty picture. And a quarter
(22:37):
of course, we trap a lot of pollutants and a
lot of odors in our home. So deb Meyer, you've
heard her on the show before, she is with oder Exit.
She has joined us and welcome again at home with
Gary Salvan. Deb Well, thank.
Speaker 6 (22:51):
You so much for having me Gary, And yes, odors come.
I heard you talk to a fella about Weiss was
getting into his house already. Yeah, that's all they've been doing.
Speaker 1 (23:01):
They've been busy.
Speaker 6 (23:03):
Yes. Well, you know we have a product that they
mice are unusual animals. They kind of go to the
bathroom as they walk. They don't actually have a bladder.
So you're seeing mice and seeing many, it will start
to smell. And our eliminator odor acted eliminator spray that
(23:24):
I mean, it works getting rid of the smell of urine.
It doesn't matter or what it is. So if you're
seeing little pepper drops like you're, there's probably urine there too,
So that's going to get rid of that smell. And
then the same fellow mentioned he was going to get
casts to get rid of the mice and he probably
(23:46):
really might need more odor action.
Speaker 1 (23:49):
So the odor exit eliminator that is your flagship product
because you know, with pets and a lot of people
have pets and that eliminator. I had an email this
week in fact, and they had bought a house, and
I'm trying to get it all together in my head
(24:10):
exactly what they said. They bought a house, they hit
a strong, you know, smell of odor from pets, and
she was going to tear up the carpet and paint
the floor and get new carpet. And I'm going a
lot of people think that's the only way you can
get rid of odors, and in a lot of cases
that doesn't even work. You gotta kill the odor.
Speaker 6 (24:36):
Exactly because you need to know, especially with the eliminator,
you need to know where that odor is coming from
and identify it was a dog body odor or was
it actually urine and bodied fluids? So how do we
do body fluids?
Speaker 1 (24:53):
How do we identify where it was?
Speaker 6 (24:57):
We have a black light and any black light will work,
and on our website is a black light that makes
the body odors fluor ess. Now it's not one hundred percent,
it's probably ninety five percent. It depends on what those
animals are eating within that food. But you know, if
there's you know, cats will sit on furniture and not
(25:20):
use that as their letter box. So it's dripping down
the wall. It can be behind the base boards, the
tax drips, So what.
Speaker 1 (25:29):
About a black light. We really you just don't want
to be spraying willy nilly, is what you're saying. You've
got to really like everything else. We got to identify
where the problem is and what that problem is before
we go attacking it.
Speaker 6 (25:43):
Exactly. And you can kind of stand sideways at it's
wall and seed drips of water like even condensation. You know,
you'll see those moisture drips, so you can look at it.
But if you paint over it first, you've just hidden
all of your your signs that there might be urineers
(26:04):
or odors there. So we say, don't paint, get rid
of that odor first, and then paint so that you're
not covering it up. And paint really doesn't get rid
of the odor anyway, it covers it up. So our
products actually eliminate. They're not adding fragrances. Our products are
(26:25):
different because they're water and essential oils, not enzymes. Most
products out there are enzymes, and enzymes smell really bad
when they work, so they add fragrances to cover up
the bad smell of the product working, and sometimes they will.
You know, if the odor is not saturated into the
(26:47):
wood or the carpet, those enzymes will work, but the
odor acts it worked in all those situations. If not,
paul Us will help you, because there's some women doing
this for over twenty five years. We've got some tricks
of the trade that we know how to get at
those heavily embedded areas. Sure to get rid of that,
(27:11):
so you know, don't I had a fellow who painted
the floor too to get rid of cat urine on
his hardwood floor. Well, he ended up having to stand
that off because that paint just did not encapsulate that smell.
The smell is a gas.
Speaker 1 (27:26):
Yeah, So a lot of paints are breatheable. Now that
means it doesn't let moisture may be in deep into
the floor if it's painted, but if there's something in
the floor that allows that guest to expel through the paint,
so you can always get rid of You're exactly right,
(27:48):
You're exactly right. So if somebody floor the old dog,
you know, if somebody is an old dog and you
still got the carpet and you don't have any intention
of removing the carpet and stuff, and they keep wetting
in one area. Will the eliminat or get through that
carpet in that pay? Can I mean? Or do you
have to Will you replace the carpet or can you
(28:10):
save it?
Speaker 6 (28:13):
If the carpet's worth saving, you can normally save it.
You've got to saturate that area so that it gets
as deep into the carpet as the urine did. It
has to come in contact with the urine. Okay, so
you know cats will often go in the corners, so
that's really saturated. You may have to pull that corner
(28:35):
of the carpet back and spray both sides. Okay, saturate that,
but then spray on the wall behind the tax strips
or not tax just the toe strips, and maybe even
inject it into the wood.
Speaker 3 (28:49):
Of the dry wall.
Speaker 6 (28:51):
Okay, we've done that, been very successful.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
Yeah, that that odor exit eliminator. That that's a concentrate, right,
use little too al lot of water.
Speaker 4 (29:00):
Correct, right, right?
Speaker 6 (29:03):
Four ounces to a gallon of water. We sell a
product that we've already added the water too, So you
don't want to mix. You don't have to, got but yeah,
and it is a concentrate a like a fifty five
dollars bottle of concentrate. We'll do a thousand square feet,
(29:23):
so it's like five cents of square foot, so very economical,
and it just eliminates all kinds of odors. Gasoline on
your hands, sure, baby urine smells in your clothes in
the washing machine. So it's really and we don't recommend it,

Speaker 2 (37:25):
Yes, my question is I had a slab board to
be a base for a storage shit about twenty by eighteen.
Is there any reason or need I live in California.
(37:49):
Is there any reason or need to seal that thing?
Or is that just a waste of money?
Speaker 1 (37:56):
Well, you don't need to seal it. You would seal concrete.
In a mild climate, you would seal it to minimize
it dusting in a shed. Probably not that important. You
would you would seal it too if it absorbed a
(38:19):
lot of moisture, maybe getting mildewy, Probably not as important.
Northern climate, you would seal it so that snow and
ice and if used rock salt it would not be
corrosive to the concrete slab. So I would say your locale,
probably not horribly necessary. If you pour the slab. They
(38:40):
have a seal cure and seal compound that they sometimes
all put on it, so it'll be it can cure
completely and you know throughout the whole slab not dry
out too fast and it will be sealed for a
(39:00):
couple of years. Anyway.
Speaker 2 (39:03):
Yeah, well they didn't do that. We covered it with
plastic for twenty eight days. Okay, oh okay, and it
turned out, I don't know, it looks really good, really great.
Speaker 1 (39:16):
So yeah, I mean if you were.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
Basically just waste just to waste of money, then basically, well.
Speaker 1 (39:21):
I don't know, if it's a waste of money, it'll
it'll just keep it from being dusting, maybe keep it
from staining. Uh, but it's it would be less necessary,
I'll put it that way. But it but it would
you know, it depends on what kind of sealer you get.
You can actually get sealers that would help maybe keep
oil stains from penetrating into the slab. So there's advantages
(39:46):
to it.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
Be a breathable seiler or or what or are they
all breathable?
Speaker 1 (39:54):
They're not all breathable, but you would want to use
a breathable sealer. Yes, another word, it's like text It's
like gortex for concrete. It doesn't let stuff in, but
it exhausts stuff out.
Speaker 2 (40:07):
Okay, one other question, now, if I wanted to seal it,
I mean, do you have any recommendation for uh, you know,
a brand or or or whatever.
Speaker 1 (40:18):
There's one group of sealers which is a pretty high
quality seiler that is internet based so you can get
them anywhere. And it's called Masonry Defender, so it's Masonrydefender
dot com.
Speaker 2 (40:35):
And how long do I have to wait after the uh?
I mean, can I do it now?
Speaker 1 (40:40):
Or you can do it now?
Speaker 2 (40:41):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (40:42):
Yeah, you can do it after twenty eight days, as
long as a ceiling compound wasn't put on it when
it was, you know, like the cure and seal. And
it sounds like it was not.
Speaker 2 (40:53):
All right, okay, all right, great, thank you, No, I
love you.
Speaker 1 (40:58):
Thank you, Sarah, take care, bye bye. All right, we'll
go to Carol. Carol, welcome. Hi. Hello.
Speaker 8 (41:07):
I've got a question about my basement. My house is
built in forty eight and we had waterproofing done to
it about ten fifteen years ago, where they dug up
outside and dug up inside, made some kind of drain
on the inside, and added a some pump that's been
(41:32):
working spine. My question is the humidity I have them
there well anyhow, when they did the waterproof and they
put in the easy breath Okay, my steps going to
the basement in the center of the house and on
the right through a regular door is the laundry room
(41:54):
on the left through a regular sized door is the
wreck room. So I have a dehumidifier in the rec
room and the use it in the summer, and so
I started using it maybe August, July, August something like that,
and been getting out, you know, least a gallon of water.
(42:16):
I have it on a timer, so it runs like
four or five hours at night, and have a humidistat
that is still in sixty five before maybe Okay, I
just wonder if anything, it shouldn't.
Speaker 1 (42:34):
Be that high, right, No, probably need to run it more,
would be much that's what it is. Yeah, I would,
I would think so there and a lot of do humidifiers.
There's actually kind of a humanist stat that can turn
that on and off.
Speaker 8 (42:50):
Uh huh.
Speaker 1 (42:51):
Set out at set out at about fifty five and
just run it, oh uh huh, and see if we
can get that down. You want to below sixty percent
in a basement, so it's not that far off. But
I would definitely not use that timer and set it
where you know, you know, we'll take it down to
(43:13):
say fifty five and see where you are. Then it'll
start drying out pretty soon anyway, because it's getting cold.
Speaker 8 (43:20):
Yeah, right, I know, okay, I'll try that next summer.
Speaker 1 (43:24):
All right, very good, don't forget thanks so that all right,
take care, bye bye, and again remember if you use
an air conditioning yep, this is a big thing too.
When you use an air conditioning, we run the fan
only when the air conditioner is kicking in. Don't put
it on manual where you run it all the time.
(43:44):
All right. Now, let me tell you about one of
my favorite products, and I try and do that at
the end of every hour. One of them is the
easy Breathed ventilation system. That will help. Again, I don't
know why she has so much moisture in all of case,
you don't need help of a do you amidifier. Once
she gets under control there, she probably won't need that
(44:06):
doumidifier as much. But right now we've got to get
that moisture out of there. They got a sale going on.
It's twenty percent off plus they'll give you a couple
amidifier or Amiti status where you can see where the
humidity is in your home. And again it's easy Breathe
dot com. You're at home with Gary Sullivan.
