Speaker 1 (00:31):
Well, the weekends upon us. Welcome aboard at home with
Gary Sullivan taking you to another weekend. Let's get some
stuff done around at home. What do you say it's
eight hundred eight two three eight two five five. Don't
forget easy Breathe ventilation system. During the entire month of October.
You get twenty percent off, plus they'll give you two
(00:52):
free au ministats with every easy breath purchase. You can
check it out at easybreathe dot com. And as I
look out side, the leaves are changing colors, the leaves
are beginning to fall. And as I said yesterday and
I thoroughly mean it, make yourself a promise right now,
(01:13):
at the end of the season of leaf drop, we'll
call it data season. You gotta get the gutters cleaned out. Okay,
you know, if you get the gutter brush, you can
keep the gunk out. But if you don't have anything
in the gutters, you don't intend to put anything in
the gutters. And not saying most gutters don't have anything
(01:34):
in them to prevent that. You gotta clean those cutters out.
Nothing that drives me more crazy than in the springtime
when I drive through and I see maple seeds and
trees growing out of people's gutters. It happens every year.
So once all the leaves have dropped, promise you're going
to go ahead. You're going to clean out the gutters.
(01:55):
Then you're going to take a hose and you're going
to put the hose in the gutter and to watch
the water flow towards the downspout. Then you're gonna watch
the water go down the down spout, and you're gonna
make sure it's coming out the other end. We want
to take all the water away from the home. So important. Now,
(02:18):
if you're listening to me in Florida and you're saying,
what are you talking about? Not as important sandy soil,
but if you've got a lot of really clay soil,
heavy soil is really important. And as I was talking yesterday,
I got to thinking too, We've had so many calls
lately going, oh, we're having so many, you know, heavy
(02:39):
downpours of rain that I don't think my gutters are
big enough. And I agree. I've had that call multiple
times in the last couple of years. Start doing this show.
We used to do four inch gutters and now we're
doing five inch cutters and some people are now putting
on six inch cutters. Then I got to think, and
I wonder how many of those gutters they say aren't
(03:00):
big enough, don't have the grating in the gutter to
get the water down to the bouncement quarter inch per
ten feet. If you put a level on your gutter,
that should be about an eighth of a bubble off
the center line. Uh, we're checking before winter. Very important.
(03:27):
They're clean, free flowing, properly sloped and fastened to the house.
Otherwise you'll be calling me about ice damps. And we
get that every year too, and it's not yeah, going
into the colder weather. Maybe we had to put a
big disclaimer out on that right now. Okay, ice dams
(03:51):
are caused mainly there's multiple reasons, mainly because of the
lack of insulation in your home. And let me give
you the scenario here. The big expanse of the roof,
and let's say you got a two foot overhang over
the house extends beyond the house. That's where the gutters are,
(04:16):
and at the top of that roof right above the attic,
and the heat's moving from the house into the attic.
You don't have good ventilation you don't have enough insulation
to keep that heat down in the house. Your attic's warm,
(04:39):
and it warms the underside of the roof decking and
it melts the snow and the water maneuvers its way
down the roof, and there's an ice pack on the
overhang of the house that two foot area. There's no
(04:59):
heat underneath. The water mixes with that, it freezes, and
you got an ice dam. So for the last several
weeks I've been talking it's all about insulation and ventilation.
It is so if you can't get up in the
attic and measure how much insulation you have, and you're
(05:21):
wondering how much insulation you have, and you're thinking, boy,
I need more insulation in the house, it's not as
comfortable as it used to be. Get somebody up there,
find out what kind of insulation you have in that
attic and how deep that insulation is, and then you
can get the Department of Energies energy map. It'll tell
(05:43):
you what the recommended are value is. We can do
the calculation in Bingo. You can decide yes, I need
no I don't. All right, you can grab a line again.
It's eight hundred eighty two three eight, two five five, Ron, Welcome.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Thanks for my call. Gary.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
You bet.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
I have a house that was built in seventy two.
Family room has some very nice wood paneling on it.
It was original with the house. Sometime in the early eighties,
I probably foolitually decided that it would be wise to
(06:26):
clean that paneling with Merphy's or else.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
I did so.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
No problems that I'm aware of. Since that time, I've
done nothing to that pandeling other than wipe the dust
off of it occasionally. My question is, would MILS it
be a healthy thing for that paneling. If so, would
I want the original formula or the antique formula or
(06:56):
should I just leave it alone?
Speaker 1 (06:59):
All the above? Okay, how's that for an answer, Ron,
So let's just talk about that. The Millsake number one
would would be a great product for that if you
want to use it. So right now we have the
paneling up. I'm assuming it looks okay, it looks great. Okay,
(07:22):
That's why I said all the above. So Murphy's also
probably not the greatest thing to use on wood paneling,
but you know, it's certainly not the worst. The only
problem is if you use the time and time again,
you'll get a film that will build up. It'll make
it look cloudy, and it might get sticky. If you've
(07:42):
done it one time, you're a long way from that. Okay,
So you know, so it looks okay, It doesn't doesn't
have to have anything. If you want to do something
to give that paneling a little bit of pop, don't
wax it. The Millsic product well over one hundred year
(08:07):
old product. It contains no silicones and no wax, right,
and so it'll actually remove any waxy residue that would
be on that paneling, any oils from our hands for
whatever reason that would be on that paneling. It would
(08:28):
remove a lot of our indoor air. Is it has
a base, it's not always water soluble because of the
cooking and cooking oils and that type of thing. And
so it too will make it cloudy over time. So
if you feel it needs cleaning and revitalization to give
(08:51):
it a little pop, the Milsic would be a perfect
product for it. Now I say that, and then I
must say you might want to test it. Maybe it's
just fine, or maybe if you used a little bit
on a back corner on a small wall and you
put it on there and the next day you looked
(09:11):
at that and said, holy cow, I didn't realize it
was that doll. Then go ahead and tackle that project
because the milltick will remove non you know, it'll remove waxes,
it'll remove oils, it will revitalize the wood, and so
(09:38):
it's a great cleaning and a great preservative. But my
original set all is the above, So I stand by
that you can let it go, but you may not
know what a revitalized look will be. So in that case,
if you wanted to test it, I'd go ahead and
test it. You wanted to know if what formula you
(09:59):
should use. They make two they make cabinet cleaners. Two types.
They make an orange oil and a lemon oil which
is not silicone based, and uh, I would use either
one of those. Just use a regular cabinet cleaner and
I'll tell you it does a great job. I've had
people already tell me they were going to paint their
(10:20):
cabinets and I'd suggested maybe they take off the handles
and try cleaning them first, because it was a it
was a really nice with cabinet. And they called back
and said, oh, thank you so much, because now I'm
just going to clean all my cabinets. So it is
a your call, all right. Our phone number is eight

Here's a quick little tip as we head in the fall,
is the air filter in the air handler some we
used to call them furnace filters, now they're air handler filters.
Those need to be replaced, and they need to be
replaced if it's a pleted one every ninety days. If
(13:48):
it's a flat panel, well every thirty days. But I'd
stay with a pleted one quite honestly. I don't necessarily
say you need the real high ultra Alley Rojans, but
a good pleading filter about five bucks about every ninety
days would be very beneficial. All right. Their phone numbers
eight hundred eight two three eight two five five and
(14:12):
feel free to jump on board. Happy to chat with
you regarding your home project. Let's go to Benny.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
Benny, Welcome, good morning, Garrett. How are you.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
Today, I'm doing just fine. How about you.
Speaker 5 (14:24):
Well, I'm graat and I got a question. I've got
a metal roof on my house that's been there about
twenty years, and I get conflicting information. Some people says,
to the screws, the fastness should be replaced every five, six,
seven years, something like that, and then another say, no,
(14:44):
we don't worry about it. It's got a neoprem washer on.
It was backed over the middle. You first, you got
the screw, you got the middle covered. It goes over
the neoprem and then that's what they've fastened it with.
Speaker 6 (14:59):
Now.
Speaker 5 (14:59):
The old old roofs that used to use gav and
as the nails with a lead washer nailed it in there.
And you know, those things stayed in there thirty four
and fifty years and they never replaced them. Right, So
I'm confused. I don't know you should I replace them or.
Speaker 1 (15:20):
So I guess. I guess the first thing, I don't
think there's a rule that says you definitely should replace them.
You know, I think you need to find out what's
going on in the metal roof. And the first thing
I'm going to ask you is you do have screws
on the metal roof, and you do have the neopremes
(15:40):
washers correct, Yes, all right? Are the screws are they
backed out at all anywhere in particular? Are they rusted?
Are the washers cracked?
Speaker 5 (15:52):
Well, it don't seem because I'm buying, I can't get
up and look myself. But as far as I know,
they all, you know, real still good kite. I don't
see any of this back now.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
Well, I think that's what you need to do, Benny,
quite honestly, is get somebody up there, get somebody that
you know does metal roof maintenance. And and really, I'm
not gonna say they're gonna last thirty five years. I'm
not gonna tell you they're gonna last ten years. I'm
not gonna tell you they're gonna last twenty years, because
you know, weather conditions are different, screws are different types.
(16:28):
NEA prem doesn't always last twenty five or thirty years,
but sometimes it does. Somebody's got to inspect the roof,
is what I'm saying. And they'll get up there and
they'll look for backed out screws, rusted screws, cracked washers,
and they'll put a you know, a little chalk and
they'll rub it on that track and then they can
go ahead and remove the old screws, you know, clean
(16:49):
the area, check the hole and kind of reinstall the
new screws and and and you know, replace the washer
and stuff. But I think you just need to have it.
Speaker 5 (17:02):
Inspected, right, What about the Calkin's tough it's around events
to come out of a roof like that. Does that
need to be replaced here? So many years? Some of
that cal can is supposed to be good. Hey, indefinitely,
that's what the main is, don't.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Believe, Well, it depends again, you know. I mean that's
why I always encourage people to have on occasion a
roof inspected by a roofer. Because we have cacking that
can last five to ten years. A good grade of
acrylic silk and ized cocking probably last you ten years.
You put your thing cocking up there, your thing cocking
(17:44):
can last thirty five to fifty years. So well, you know,
I so I there's just not a rule of thumb.
And again that's kind of where that you know, roof
inspection would come in handy. And if yours is twenty
five years old, I would probably have that done and
(18:06):
they may find a couple of screws, they may find none.
So anyway, I guess that's the way I would answer it.
I mean, somebody's got to get up there and really
inspect the roof. You know, all things break, nothing lasts forever,
and so having an inspection. Most metal roofs have a
(18:30):
warranty of twenty five to fifty years. But those screws
in neoprems, they could use maintenance on occasion. But I
wouldn't just go up and replace them all unless they're
all starting to back out then probably. So hope that
helps you, Benny, and good luck with that. And the
(18:51):
same holds true whether you have a shingled roof, and
you know, if that's got a thirty year warranty, and
you know, whether you had a big hailstorm or we're
now in year twenty two, it's not a bad idea
to get somebody up there and inspected to see what's
(19:11):
going on. Those little boots that go over the airbence
or the pipe fence. Think of the life span of
about ten years when you get a leak. It's not
always the roof. All right, We're gonna talk odors odors

thirty three minutes after the top of the are at
Home with Gary Sullivan and Well, I've been talking about
you know, the cold weather will be here very soon,
maybe tonight. In some areas, windows they're getting closed, snowing
in Wyoming. We're going to be inside more. Boy, what
(22:34):
a pretty picture and a quarter. Of course, we trap
a lot of pollutants and a lot of odors in
our homes. So deb Meyer, you've heard her on the
show before. She is with odor Exit. She has joined
us and welcome again at Home with Gary Salivn. Deb Well,
thank you.
Speaker 6 (22:51):
So much for having me Gary, And yes, odors come.
I heard you talk to a fella about Weiss was
getting into his house already.
Speaker 1 (22:58):
Yeah, I've been doing this. They've been busy.
Speaker 6 (23:03):
Yes. Well, you know we have a product that they
mice are unusual animals. They kind of go to the
bathroom as they walk. They don't actually have a bladder,
So you're seeing mice and seeing many. It will start
to smell and our eliminator odor acted eliminator spray that
(23:23):
I mean, it works getting rid of the smell of urine.
It doesn't matter who or what it is. So if
you're seeing little pepper drops like you're, there's probably urine
there too, So that's going to get rid of that smell.
And then the same fellow mentioned he was going to
get cast to get rid of the mice.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
I think he was joking.
Speaker 6 (23:45):
Then he probably really might need more otor actions.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
So the odor exit eliminator that is your flagship product
because you know with pets, and a lot of people
have pets, and that I had an eliminator. I had
an email this week in fact, and they had bought
a house, and I'm trying to get it all together
(24:09):
in my head exactly what they said. They bought a house,
they hit a strong, you know, smell of odor from pets,
and she was going to tear up the carpet and
paint the floor and get new carpet. And I'm going
a lot of people think that's the only way you
can get rid of odors, and in a lot of
cases that doesn't even work. You gotta kill with the odor.
Speaker 6 (24:35):
Exactly because you need to know, especially with the eliminator,
you need to know where that odor is coming from
and identify it was a dog body odor or was
it actually urine and body fluids?
Speaker 1 (24:50):
So how do we do body fluids? How do we
identify where it was?
Speaker 6 (24:56):
We have a black light, and any black light will work,
but on our website is a black light that makes
the body odors for us. Now it's not one hundred percent,
it's probably ninety five percent. It depends on what those
animals are eating within that food. Okay, but you know,
if if there's you know, cats will fit on furniture
(25:18):
and not use that as their letter box. So it's
dripping down the wall, it can be behind the base boards.
The tax drips.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
Hit a black light. We really you just don't want
to be spraying willy nilly, is what you're saying. You've
got to really like everything else. We got to identify
where the problem is and what that problem is before
we go attacking it.
Speaker 6 (25:43):
Exactly. And you can kind of stand sideways at it's
wall and seed drips of water like even condensation. You know,
you'll see those moisture drips, So you can look at it.
But if you paint over it first. You've just hidden
all of your your signs that there might be urineer
(26:03):
or odors there. So we say don't paint. Get rid
of that odor first, and then paint so that you're
not covering it up. And paint really doesn't get rid
of the odor anyway, it covers it up. So our
products actually eliminate. They're not adding fragrances. Our products are
(26:24):
different because they're water and essential oils, not enzymes. Most
products out there are enzymes, and enzymes smell really bad
when they work, so they add fragrances to cover up
the bad smell of the product working. And sometimes they will.
You know, if the odor is not saturated into the
(26:47):
wood or the carpet, those enzymes will work, but the
odor acts it worked in all those situations. If not,
paul Us will help you, because there's some women doing
this for over twenty five years. We've got some tricks
of the trade that we know how to get at
those heavily embedded areas. Sure to get rid of that,
(27:10):
so you know, don't. I had a fellow who painted
the floor too to get rid of cat urine on
his hardwood floor. Well, he ended up having to stand
that off because that paint just did not encapsulate that smell.
The smell is a gas.
Speaker 1 (27:26):
Yeah, so a lot of paints are breatheable. Now that
means it doesn't let moisture. May be in deep into
the floor if it's painted, but if there's something in
the floor that allows that guest to expel through the paint,
so you can always get rid of You're exactly right,
(27:48):
You're exactly right. So if somebody floor old dog. You know,
if somebody is an old dog and you still got
the carpet and you don't have any intention of removing
the carpet and stuff, and they keep wetting in one area,
will the eliminate or get through that carpet in that pay? Can't?
I mean? Or do you have to? Will you replace
(28:09):
the carpet or can you save it?
Speaker 6 (28:12):
If the carpet's worth saving, you can normally save it.
You've got to saturate that area so that it gets
as deep into the carpet as the urine did. It
has to come in contact with the urine. Okay, so
you know cats will often go in the corners, so
that's really saturated. You may have to pull that corner
(28:35):
of the carpet back and spray both sides. Okay, saturate that,
but then spray on the wall behind the tax strips
or not tax stifs to toe strips, and maybe even
inject it into the wood of the dry wall.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
Okay, we've done that.
Speaker 6 (28:51):
Been very successful.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
Yeah, that that odor exit eliminator. That that's a concentrate, right,
use a little to a lot of water.
Speaker 6 (28:59):
Correct, right, right, four ounces to a gallon of water.
We sell a product that we've already added the water too,
so if you don't want to mix, you don't have to.
But yeah, and it is a concentrate, a like a
fifty five dollars bottle of concentrate. We'll do a thousand
(29:21):
square feet, so it's like five cents of square foot,
so very economical, and it just eliminates all kinds of odors.
Gasoline on your hands, sure, baby, urine smells in your
clothes in the washing machine. So it's it's really and
(29:43):
we don't recommend it, but people will use it in
the air after showing a new house has been closed
up for years, so lots of different firstatile things that
are customers tell us it works for.
Speaker 1 (29:59):
Well, you said, you've been doing for a long time
and got a whole line of products. I do encourage people,
and I have on this show for years. If you're
a little stumped of what the odor is, maybe it's
just an odor and you kind of got an idea,
you've got that experience, they can reach out to you
and have a conversation and you can recommend the product.
(30:21):
I mean, you also have an excellent website which is
oder xit dot com. That's a letter xit dot com. Uh,
and you can kind of read up on some of
these things because as far as I know, they're in
an odor exit can't tackle.
Speaker 6 (30:39):
Well. I won't say one hundred percent, but pretty close.
Speaker 1 (30:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (30:44):
Yeah, we do have We have four different products and
they overlap a little bit, but they are really focused
at different products. We have some our AQ m and
Moms will go after Cigurette smoke. If you smoked in
your house for ten years and everything's just covered with
(31:05):
that tar and nicotine. It'll also take care of mold spores.
If you're not breathing well in your own house, there's
something in there in that air that over time just
accumulated that soap and water doesn't get rid of and
the AQM and the mom's will, so you know, check
out our website. We also have one called Magic, and
(31:29):
we'll always say.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
Would that be like an all purpose one? I use
the Magic all the time in our house, around the
trash can or just different areas that you know notoriously
gets smelly.
Speaker 6 (31:42):
Yeah, the kitchen for dinner last night. Garlic, yes, those
kind of things leftover or bring it home, carry out
food in your car, pizza spray out in there. I
have a friend who she pulled up next to me
at a meeting this other week and she goes, yeah,
death come here, and she she put her cigarette out.
(32:03):
She's huffing real hard in the car, put it out,

It is eight hundred eight two three eight two five
five and Karen welcome, Hello, How are you doing fine?
(37:31):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (37:33):
I have a type of questions about clock. We need
to seal some aluminum windows that is surrounded by masonry brick.
Speaker 1 (37:43):
Okay, okay, and and tell me about that is on
the outside, yes, okay.
Speaker 3 (37:51):
And forever you don't see any visible clock at all?
Speaker 1 (37:57):
Oh okay, so you just see an opening a little seam.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
Yeah, okay, Yeah, the little gap that goes all the
way around the window where it needs sure.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
Well, there's two types. I guess two types would work well.
One probably a little better than the other. The one
that's a little better than the other is a little
more difficult to apply. Okay, but I'll give you both
of them. The first one, okay, is it's an acrylic
(38:29):
siliconized cocking. And acrylic siliconized cocking is paintable, It is
easy to apply, and probably last year, ten or fifteen years.
It's what a window company when they install would probably use. Okay, Okay,
(38:52):
that's one. Okay, if you're if you're looking for the
super duper, there is a eure athane cocking. I think
one of them is called quad q UAD, and there's others.
But a euthane cocking is a little thicker, so it's
(39:14):
a little more difficult to get out with the cocking gun.
It's a little more difficult to get a good bead in.
But it's the best adhesion and the best flexibility of
pretty much any cocking on the market, and it is
very beneficial if you have two different building materials that
(39:38):
are being coked. So we got brick and we got metal,
so the quater euthane would be the best. It is
also paintable, but the acrylic silke and ized cocking would
be adequate.
Speaker 4 (39:53):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (39:54):
Is the eurothane one that's gonna last me quite a
lot a lot?
Speaker 1 (39:58):
Yes, it will last longer, yes, okay.
Speaker 3 (40:00):
Okay, And one last question. We have some brick and
the mortar is sort of it's not deteriorated, but you
can definitely see where it's coming apart. Is there like
a cock I can use to kind of fill that
gap on? This is around the garage where it looks
like someone has bumped the brick a little bit and
(40:22):
loosen that mortar up, and trying to find someone to
come out and repair that is practically impossible. So we
were thinking that maybe if we got some mortar cock
that you can fill that gap to just kind of
help prevent anymore.
Speaker 1 (40:39):
Yeah, So to answer your question quickly, yes, there is
a mortar calcking that is out on the market, multiple brands.
Quick Creet makes one, I believe DAP makes one. The
one thing I just want to caution you with is
it probably will not match the mortar perfectly, but it
(41:03):
is gray. It is gray. Yeah, it is grey. There's
also a product out there if you wanted to look
a little bit more like mortar. Quick Creet makes one
called zip It Mortar, and it comes in a little
like a ziplock bag. So the powdered mortar's in there,
(41:27):
or the putting knife in there. You take that out
and you add water. You take the ziplock bag and
you just kind of knead it together to get it
to the right consistency, and you would apply the mortar. Now,
mortar concrete doesn't like to stick the concrete, but the
Zippit mortar it has a bonding agent in there, so
(41:50):
it will stick to the existing mortar. If you can
clean out even more mortar where it's got something to
grip into, like in between the bricks a little bit,
it would.
Speaker 3 (42:02):
Work better, like taking a wirebush to do along the
mortar line.
Speaker 1 (42:09):
Okay, yeah, so okay, there's an option sometimes perfect. I've
seen some mortar calking that effort about eight years. The
sun just almost bleaches it out. And it may be
just one brand or something, it's not all of them.
Speaker 3 (42:25):
But and I can use the the euro than colock
around the garageter opening where it's wood to brick.
Speaker 1 (42:35):
Yes, yes, very much.
Speaker 3 (42:36):
So all right, okay, that is perfect, Thank you very much.
I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (42:40):
All right, Karen, thank you. Take care. Yeah, the mortar,
if you're gonna, you know, use mortar in repair old mortar,
best to probably clean out as much of that mortar
as you can and then wet the bricks so your
hydrate and the bricks so it doesn't pull all the
(43:03):
moisture out of the patch. But it will really look
better than a calking at least that's been my experience.
Calking is quick and easy, and it's kind of a
band aid on top of a sore, whereas if you're
using the mortar, you're digging it out and you're kind
of like putting stitches on instead of just putting a
band aid on it. And I think over time it'll
(43:27):
look a little better. And again that mortar that zip
it more probably isn't going to match the exact mortar
looked at you have. Now, that's why Mason's when they
do brick repair and mortar repair, it's such a talent
and you know, because they come and they just have
the talent to make that mortar because there's dyes that
(43:49):
can be put in, they come very close to actually
matching a Look, all right, let's take a break. We'll
come back on the other side of the hour and
answer your questions regarding your home product. Just feel free
to grab a line. Kind of slow today, so the
lines are open. It's eight hundred eight two three eight
