It starts brought to you by gutter Brush. Clogged gutters

and right now you can save twenty five percent. You
get free shipping. The coat is Gary twenty five and
it is gutterbrush dot Com. All right, we'll take your
calls and talk about your home projects. Our phone number
is eight hundred eight two three A two five five. Hey,
(01:10):
next time you're just kind of checking things around the house.
Maybe it's the basement, Maybe it's the cross space where
you can see some Maybe it's the attic and we
talked about that earlier.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Maybe where you.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Can see some copper piping. Take a look for corrosion.
A lot of people never really think about that, never
even maybe don't even know that corrosion can occur on
copper pipes. But back in the day lead solders and
copper pipes, there was a little electrolysis that took place
(01:44):
in What you might find is some green staining around
the joints, and that's okay. You might even find a
little green crustacean here and there, keep an eye on it.
But if you see a real heavy almost like like
a rock salt, where it was green is now turning
(02:07):
white and it's a crusty white, either you or get
a plumber out there and cut that segment out. Maybe
put in, you know, a new coupling. You might have
to put an elbow for a kurd on an elbow,
(02:28):
but get that out. Usually, if you were going to
take a look at corrosion of copper, you would be
a little discoloration, a light green tint, a little green
crustiness around, and then white. And you know, I've heard
that I've actually even taken some copper pipe out of
(02:50):
a basement ceiling at my house. It was just one
or two joints where it had gotten that white and
cut them out and replaced it with a new copper.
And my son is redoing their bedroom and they're upstairs
bathroom and tearing out a wall, and sure enough he
(03:15):
had a took a picture of it and sent it
to me. It had a little tea where a copper
line going in and a branch and it was all
white and crusty, and when he went to grab it,
didn't know really what it was. Went to grab it,
it was wet or damp, damp, and he looked down
(03:38):
and there was not much moisture, but he could tell
that there was some moisture on the back side of
the ceiling, the drywall ceiling, and went downstairs and no stain.
So it must have literally just started. And I said, Jesuid,
(03:59):
what You're so lucky, because you know that would continue
to be a problem and eventually you would see a
stain on a ceiling and probably most of us are
going to ignore that for a little bit of time,
and that's not good. And then the next step is
(04:21):
the stain gets darker and then mold starts growing, and
you get the scenario. Don't ignore it. You could do
a little preventive maintenance. Especially I'm not asking you to
cut the walls open, but just know that can happen.
Not to worry anybody, but just for your memory bank.
See a little stain, it's kind of in the middle
(04:44):
of the ceiling or something, and there's nothing really above it.
You're wondering what it could be. Well, that's something it
could be all right, Mary, welcome.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
I am trying to put in a new door knob
and I bought I didn't buy a cheap one, but
I bought a good one and at a big box store.
And I didn't ask anybody when I was in a
big box store. But I put it in and taking
it out like three times, and it still doesn't work.
(05:20):
And I tried to get some help at the big
box store, but nobody helps me. I had one gal
give me a young man and he didn't know how
to do it, and he went to find somebody else,
and he couldn't find anybody else. So I'm calling you, well.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
What kind of luck is it? I mean, I can't
see it so that.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
No, it's just a regular, you know, piff one and
just one of those simple ones like I had before.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
Did you have to drill any holes at all?
Speaker 3 (05:55):
No? I put it in the existing one. Do you
think that's the problem I have to No.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
No, I'm not saying it is. I'm not saying there is.
I mean, if it fits in there, that's wonderful. It's
just there are different sizes and different styles. How holds
the house?
Speaker 3 (06:16):
How old is the house?
Speaker 1 (06:17):
Sure? Because there's different types of locks.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Well, I got it in the last time and it turns,
but it doesn't when I go to lock it, it
doesn't lock.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
So when you have the lock, and you're probably going
to have to take it to somebody, I don't know
if I'm really going to be able to help you.
But when you have a like a modern quickset lock,
you will there'll be an exterior handle, an interior handle.
There'll be a round plate, and then there'll be two
(06:51):
screws and the other one has two prongs, okay, and
then there's what they can called the keeper, and the
keeper is the bolt that fits between the screws and
the prongs and goes through the side of the door,
(07:13):
and that's the locking mechanism that goes into the door jam.
Did you have go ahead?
Speaker 3 (07:24):
I have looked at the previous locks on the house,
and doesn't matter which way the flant park is facing
or there it's out towards the outside or.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
The inside, the slanted part should be facing the inside inside. Okay,
So my guess is yeah. So my guess is so
in that keeper where that bolt is, there's a circle
on the right, a circle on the left, and in
(07:55):
the middle there's a larger circle which the tumbler or
the locking mechanism goes through, you know, the the locking
mechanism that goes into the jam. I'm going to bet
that that's not it's either not matching up or it's
not connected perfectly. So what I would do is I
(08:16):
would put the interior knob into that locking mechanism that's
going horizontally through the door and see if you can
get that, you know, in there. Kind of line up
the holes and move the lock and see if you
see the part that goes into the door jam. See
if you see that moving, because if it's not moving,
(08:39):
it's not going to lock.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Oh okay, well I will take it apart again and
I guess yep.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
All right, very good Mary, Thank you much, you're welcome,
Thank you. And I will say another thing, and this
is I don't know for of all, as many of
you know, your independent store is probably going to have
someone there to help you a little bit more. Not
(09:08):
saying everybody needs that help, but Mary needs that help.
And going to an independent dealer, I think you're going
to find maybe a little bit more service than you
will at a big box store. I'm going to guess
on a lock. I bet you there's not that much
difference in pricing. Also, of course, the ability to have
(09:31):
watching YouTube videos. I tell people I teach different classes
on home improvement to maybe first time home buyers, and
there isn't a thing in the world you can't try
to fix and learn how to fix on a YouTube video,
and it'll give you finer points and something many of
(09:53):
us do. I know. Even when one of my kids
will call me on an issue or something, rather than
try to you know, he'll send me a picture. We'll
talk back and forth going to that YouTube video, and
actually I'll direct them there and say we're rather than
me giving you the ten steps, why don't you take
a look at this and a lot of great information there.

And back at it we go twenty one.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
Minutes after the top of they are doing a couple
of little repairs around the home, and a couple of
them especially. I think one of the things that starts
giving us a little bit of a challenge in our
homes this time of year seems to be plumbing toilets
that don't quite shut off. They sound like they're running,
(13:47):
or they sound like they're flushing themselves. Maybe a disposal
that's on the fritz. And I'll give you some tips
right now, as we sit here in October, in Halloween
around the corner, Thanksgiving around the corner, Christmas around the corner,
that disposal should not have a bigger workout than it
(14:12):
has on a normal week. And what do I mean
by that, Well, you're going to start hearing different things
about disposals that just aren't grinding up the food, disposals
that get jammed. And that's because we abuse the disposal
this time of year as we have more and more guests.
(14:32):
And the first holiday for ruining or screwing up a
disposal was Halloween. People start carving pumpkins, and whatever you
do when you're carving that pumpkin, be safe and do
not put the rind in the seeds down your disposal.
(14:53):
That is a huge, huge no. No, it's not going
to grind it up. It's going to tangle it up.
In a lot of cases, it'll jam it to a
point where the circuit breaker button on the disposal will
stop the disposal. And you may or may not know
it has that button, which means you may think the
whole disposal is broken. I'm here to tell you it
(15:14):
might be, but it might not be. Number one, it
won't be if you don't put the rind and you
don't put the seeds down the disposal. So you know,
put them up, wrap them in paper, put them in
a plastic bag, whatever, put them in a trash, do
not put them down the disposal. All right, got that
(15:35):
covered right. The next one is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving, you have
a house full of people over peeling potatoes. No, no,
potato scraps do not go down the disposal. Every year
I kind of try to remember to give you these tips,
and every year I get emails or a call and say, well,
why do I even have the disposal I can't put
(15:56):
anything down at fibrous material, Like I said, pumpkin reins, seeds, celery,
potato skins, rice, those are all bad things for a disposal.
And usually during the holidays it's at a volume too. Right,
we're cleaning dishes off that neck, But don't put that
(16:19):
stuff in a disposal all right. Now, if it doesn't work,
it just stops running. It hums. There is a little button,
So first of all, it's jammed. There are it grinds.
There's grinding plates in a disposal, and they get jammed up.
When there's too much heavy fibrous foods. They jam out.
(16:43):
There's a lot of load on the motor. The motor
protects itself has a little circuit breaker on the bottom
of the disposal. It pops out. Now you can try
to press that button and re engage it, but I
don't think I would do that. First. What I want
you to do is it's it's on a circuit, probably
(17:07):
on a switch. Is let's let's turn off the electricity there, okay,
Or if that red button is out, it's it's kind
of shut off the electricity. But let's make sure that
circuit's dead. And then with an Allen wrench that came
(17:30):
with the disposal, which you probably don't have, or maybe
you do. Maybe it's in that little baggy with the
owner's manual and it'll tell you how to do this.
It gets inserted at the bottom of the disposal and
you can manually turn those grinding plates. In other words,
you can kind of loosen it up, turn the electricity
(17:52):
back on, pop in that circuit breaker, and walla. We'll
hope it works, and there's a chance it will. So
be just be mindful of what goes in there and
doesn't go in there. And you know, a little bit
of food scraps that's fine. A lot of food scraps
(18:15):
that's not fine. A lot of fibrous or starchy foods
that's really not fine. That day after Thanksgiving, according to
my friends at Rotor Ruter, is one of the busiest
days of the year. And as I said, colder weather
just seems to just be a little more tougher on
(18:37):
plumbing devices and their calls are usually toilets, sinks, disposals.
And then if we have a really really harsh winter,
you know, that might be a busy day with frozen pipes.
But the days around Christmas and Thanksgiving. They're tough on plumber,
so stay ahead of the process. And there's even ways
(19:00):
you can even do a little maintenance on drains. And
sometime today I'll give you some tips and we'll talk
about that also. All right, let's take a break and
when we come back, we'll talk about mending material, which
is pretty easy. Maybe the outdoor cushions that you're getting

Danny's poised and ready to take your calls. We'll chat
about your home project, whether it's maintenance or repair. Our
phone number is eight hundred eight two three eight two
five five. I told you I'm talking a little bit
about repairing materials and fabrics. And I bring that up
(22:45):
because I know a lot of folks, especially in colder temperatures,
maybe bringing in outdoor furniture. Maybe you cover it and
leave it out, Maybe you put it in the garage,
maybe you put it in the shed, maybe put it
in a basement. I don't know, but right now is
a good time to kind of examine what kind of
(23:08):
shape it's in, because when we bring that out, we
want to use it right We're excited that temperatures warm
it up and life is good and we don't want
to make a repair. Then we don't want to be
challenged with doing things, So a couple of rehab things.
There's all kinds of different patio furnitures. Obviously, if you
(23:31):
have metal furniture, I want you to inspect for rust
finishes that are compromised. In other words, maybe we want
to go ahead and paint them refinish. If it's a
rusted area, you can use a product like rust neutralizer,
which will react with the iron oxide, and then you
(23:53):
can put this on by brush. You can spray it
on and that chemical reaction will solidify and seal in
the rust into the metal so you're not scraping and
wire brushing and all that, and then coming back with
a primer and coding that with a primer, probably red
(24:18):
outside primer would be best, and then like a roustolium
product over that. If it's I guess some of the
newer type things that in the furniture business. And I
know Harold's probably listening to me in Alabama and he's like,
what are you talking about today? Well, I know Harold
sells patio furniture, and I know he wants you to
(24:42):
take care of it. But sometimes we need to replace that.
Sometimes we can have a small tear in a cushion.
Sometimes the foam in the pillow on the backside. Uh,
it's getting a little squoshy. And we're not in a
(25:04):
position to go buy some beautiful new patio furniture, so
we are to a degree forced to kind of fix
it up a little bit. And I'm telling you now
is the time to do it. When you're putting it away,
maybe you need some new foam underneath that cover for
(25:27):
the squshy pillow in the back. Fine, do it now.
You can get those. In fact, I replaced one last
year and man didn't make a difference. I probably should
have replaced them all, but I didn't. But maybe this year.
And also tears, I don't know how they happen, whether
(25:47):
they just get worn like everything else, or whether somebody
did something to it and there's an old tear. It's
usually not much I've had them maybe an inch long.
And you've heard me talk about a product called ter Mender,
which it just it works amazing in my book. And
(26:12):
what I have done in the past is you can push,
you can literally from the top is the way I've done.
I've pulled the February almost with a little duct ape
where you can pull that cut together and then get
a little cloth on the inside, put a little tear
(26:33):
mender on it, put it on the inside, and just
let it dry. And I'm telling you you come back,
you know, in a couple hours, maybe the end of
the day, pull that tape off, and you have mended
that tear. If you're want to take a look at it.
(26:56):
They have a website it's tear mender dot com. But
a good way to take care of some of the
problems you might have before storage. I'm not a huge
fan of storing them outside with plastic cover on them.
I'm just a little concerned of moisture in there and
getting some mildew in there, depending on your climate. I
(27:18):
think usually stormmined in a basement area, but I've seen
people storm in sheds too. But you want to you know,
it's protected some of those those beautiful pieces of furniture
are you know, they're expensive and taking care of them,
(27:40):
and it's always fine to replace them. Don't get me wrong.
If you're in a position to do that, that's wonderful.
But you can salvage a lot of those type of cushions,
just to ask how I said, and I encourage you
to take a look at it, examine it. So a
lot of things as we prepare our house for winter,
(28:03):
and that's one of them. The other one that I've
talked about many times is windows and screening. The screening
in the windows become dirty, and a lot of the
fiberglass screening that we have in windows, the lifespan on
(28:26):
that if subject to the weather is seriously it's about
twelve thirteen years, and it'll kind of become threadbare. That
black fiberglass screening will kind of become whitish. And in
the winter time is a great time to replace those screens.
But I think next week we go ahead and I
(28:48):
think we move most of us, I should say, will
move our clock back one hour, and so it's gonna
be darker at night, it's going to be lighter in
the morning. But in a lot of parts of the country.
Winter's kind of dark and gloomy, and you know what
I mean, maybe that sunsets a little earther than you
(29:12):
used to right now. And if you're just the gloom
and stuff, the grayness of winter and a lot of
parts of the country, I've recommended for years taken the
screening out of your windows. If you live in a
climate where it's cold, it's not going to be opening
window time, not worrying about that nice spring breeze. Taking
(29:36):
those screens out will add from a lot of the
different articles I've read, and I agree this to be true.
Probably between twenty to thirty percent more light is to
be gained in your home in the winter time if
the screens are removed. In reality, you don't need the
(29:56):
screens in the winter anyway, unless you're in some beautiful
parts of the country for winter. So consider doing that.
And while you're doing that, and so again, if you're
pulling the full panel screens out, that's fine. If you've
got different sized windows, you might want to number them.
I usually start in the kitchen at what I would
(30:18):
call number one window and go clockwise around the house.
You can number them any way you want a little
sharpie up on a corner screen frame, just put that
number and you'll know where it goes. In the springtime,
in the wintertime, when things are kind of quiet and
looking for something to do, a good project is go
(30:42):
ahead and replace that screen if it's starting to get
a little threadbare. And then of course cleaning the window.
Lubricating the mechanisms in the window can be done easily,
but not with a real refined oil. That's really not
the drugt you'd want to go. I'd strongly recommend a
(31:04):
silicone or a teflon. Be careful with some of the
teflons that you get sprays. Make sure they're clear. There
are some red teflons and they will stain, so you
don't want to go there. But you want a teflon
spray that is clear. And then move the mechanism up,
you know, distribute the lubricant around, move that mechanism up
(31:27):
and down, and then go ahead and close them and
lock them. Because a lot of times after you have
that first really cold blast and you start feeling drafts
in your home, I'd say the number one and two
reason is your windows are closed, but they're not locked.
And another place if you haven't done this even if
(31:48):
you have insulation in your walls. Next time it gets
cold and windy out go ahead and replace or take
take the receptacle plate off on an exterior wall and
see how much cold air or breeze you have coming
through that outlet. Buy that electrical box and buy that receptacle.
(32:12):
I think you're going to be stunned. There will be
cold air, there will be a draft. And go ahead,
and you can the hardware store. You can get little
weather stripping pads that you take the plate off. You
just put it right over the receptacle. Put the plate
back on. In Bengal, it's tightened up and your windows
(32:34):
are in good shape. They're lubricated. And then one other
thing is if you haven't got new windows, maybe your
windows are twenty five years old, thirty years old, kind
of falling apart. I'll tell you I got replacement windows
and I was just going through some of the files.
They're fifteen years old or ten years old. I'm sorry,
(32:56):
ten years old, and I couldn't believe it seemed like
a them yesterday. And they are just they're very great windows.
We've been so satisfied with them. They're very energy efficient.
But if you got old windows that are kind of well,
not so energy efficient. I there's things you can do there,
and you've seen them. You've seen these storm window kits
(33:19):
with just plastic, very thin plastic, and you're wondering, how
in the world can that do any good at all? Well,
it can. It can do some good. It may not
be as good as a replacement window. But you would
put a tape up around the surrounding area of the window.
It's a two sided tape. You'd put the plastic on
top of that and then get the hair dryer out.
(33:41):
You've seen them, you've probably seen ads on TV form.
Very easy to install and you can hit that with
the hair dryer. That heat will shrink the plastic. It'll
be very taut. It'll block out any kind of draft.
And if the windows happen to be super super drafty,
I got a little tip for you. Before you put
that plastic up there, you can get a product in
(34:04):
a calking tube called Stop Draft. And Stop Draft is

All right, I want to just go through.
Speaker 1 (37:40):
I know a lot of our sponsors of this show,
and we're very very thankful for them. But during springtime
in fall time, it seems like several of them run
different specials, and there's several going on right now to
just kind of want to recap them. Number one, the
easy Breathe. In fact, an air quality expert will be
joining us next weekend, and the air quality is all
(38:04):
about getting the indoor pollutants out of your home, which
is what an easy breath does. And Easy Breathe. Right now,
you get twenty percent off an Easy Breathe ventilation system
the entire month of October, so you're running out of time.
With that twenty percent off. They also give you two
free humidity guides which tells you what the humidity is
(38:28):
wherever you want to know. I usually put one on
the first floor, put one in the basement, and again
humidity right now, you know fifty percent, I say most
of the year, but in the wintertime thirty five percent.
And your humidity really inside your home should not be
above thirty five percent when it's freezing outside. So right
(38:52):
now they do have the Easy Breathe ventilation sale twenty
percent off the month of October. We talk a lot
about odors that get trapped in our home. The odor
Exit folks have fifteen percent off on their best sellers,
which is the Eliminator and also the Magic. These are
not perfumes. They eliminate the odors, cat oders in yeah,
(39:19):
cat oders, dog odors. If you have an animal it
has accidents in the house, it's the Eliminator. If you
just want to get rid of cooking smells, it's the Magic.
Right now, that's fifteen percent off and it's odor exit
and that sales going on right now. Not sure when
that ends, but I just kind of wanted to bring
that up to you one more because as I peer
(39:40):
out the window in my hometown, I see leaves beginning
to flutter off the trees. It seemed like a day
or two ago we started really seeing a lot of color,
and today we're seeing a little bit of leaf drop
and clod. Gutters are bad. Right now, you can save
twenty five percent off and get free shipping on the
(40:00):
gutter brush. There is a coupon code, it's Gary twenty
five and you can get all that information. You can
see some videos. You can order them there. It is
a gutterbrush dot com. If you don't climb ladders anymore,
window cleaner, landscaper, there's all kinds of handyman. They just
(40:21):
simply slide the gutter brushes right into the gutter and
keeps all the debris from clogging it up. Also, I
think last week I mentioned you know, you've got to
make me a promise if you don't use any gutter
protection devices, whether it's the helmet, whether it's a filter,
whether it's the gutter brush that's up to you. But
(40:43):
if you just got open gutters, the pledge is this.
By the first in November or December, I should say
you've gotten yourself or somebody up on a ladder and
you clean those gutters. The amount of damage that clogged
gutters causes in a home, from rotted soffitts and facia
(41:07):
to leaky basements, to erosion and problems down the road
is substantial. And you know, if you have a little
rot with around the faci, you may be thinking, who cares.
I mean, I'll paint it next round painting house. It's
you know, when you get rotted wood and wood that's
(41:29):
kind of spongy around the gutter areas, around the roof areas,
I'm telling you it is a entry point for critters, squirrels,
particularly raccoon's next where they'll scrape and scrape and they'll
burrow right through that wood and set up home in
your attic. So I tell you that to help protect
(41:50):
your home. And again when you think about the gutters,
removing all that water that falls in the footprint of
your house is directed down to the corners of your
with gutters and down spouts and then whist away either
through proper slope grating or taking that water underground and
(42:12):
exiting it. Which, by the way, if you clean that
out the gutters. I mean, I'm just saying, if there's
no protection at all and there were leaves accumulating, you
clean that out. Make sure that that gutter still has
good slope going to the down spout where it is
literally moving all of that water that's being collected over
(42:34):
the footprint of your house away from your house. Again,
it just sits along the foundation. Eventually, we're going to
start having problems with water pressure, and a lot of
basements have cracks and walls, probably more on the outside
than the inside, but that water will find a way
(42:54):
into your home. So the best way to solve that
problem is keeping it away from the foundation. So I
know I rant on gutters a lot, but it's very important.
I can't tell you how many times I've talked about
this too and got emails from people saying, oh gosh,
(43:15):
that one area in my basement at one corner, it leaked.
It leaked for you know, for years, and I got
up there and it was all clogged. It's been backed
up probably forever, and that was causing my leak and
I don't have to have my home waterproof. There are
(43:37):
stories like that. That's why I bring up those stories.
