to take your calls regarding your home projects. It's eight
hundred eight two three eight two five five and Evelyn welcome.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Oh thank you Gary. Last week you helped me fix
my toilet where the water wasn't coming up into the bowl.
And I learned about you.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Well.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
You said to undo the valves and leave it for
a while, and I did that and my husband kept plunging.
Eve You know, even though the water would drain. It
just wouldn't come back up right, and so then overnight
it just cleared and uh, well, I after a half hour,

(01:59):
I did turn the valve back on again. So it
was thank you. And now I have another question because
of what you were just talking about with the furnace filters. Well,
it's sort of strange. We have quite a very new

(02:20):
furnace and maybe two years old.

Speaker 4 (02:22):
And.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Right this summer with air on the filter, and I
use those cheap thin ones because I like that, and
I replaced them very often, but they the filter in
the summer didn't turn dirty dirty, it didn't pick up
a bit of gray. And I called our general contractor

(02:46):
and he said, well, you both have a very clean house,
and I said no, but he didn't think that I
needed to have the furnace sky come out this fall
because it's such a new furnace. But I think it's
a little dustier in the house because even though the

(03:07):
air conditioner runs beautifully and the furnace is you know, good,
and the air flows strong, when I come down there
and I go to pull out the old furn filter,
it's really not it's strange, I think, And so and

(03:30):
I put the filter in correctly in the direction that
he marked the arrow.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
First question, Yeah, I do.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
But also those are the thin filters, so that it
flows through very easily and it just stays pure white.
I don't it's pure white, like nothing is coming through
in the winter. It did in the winter, they would
turn gray.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
Well, I don't really have an answer of why it's not.
I you know, it might be because it is a
new newer house or a newer face.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
It's an old house. It's an old house, but and
the furnace is only about maybe two years old. And
in the winter I was getting plenty of I was
picking up plenty of dust through the filter.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
But this summer it's a pretty simple operation. No, I mean,
if it's not picking up dust, it's pretty much there's
not dust. You got to go in the right way,
the blowers working, or you wouldn't have had air conditioning
this summer. So you know what you might consider. There
are those thin filters. They're a one inch filter and

(04:51):
it's either sixteen by twenty five or twenty by twenty
five or twenty by twenty you know, there's different sizes,
but they're one inch and they make a flat one
which sounds like the one you have. And they also
make a pleted one, and I'm not talking about an
allergen one. It's just a pleted one, so there's a
little more surface material so it has a little better

(05:15):
filtering properties to it. And you might want to slide
one of those in there and maybe three four bucks
or something and you know the one you have. The
analogy is you're trying to filter out basketballs and these
other ones are going to filter out ping pong balls,
so they're definitely, you know, a little bit more efficient,

(05:37):
and that might be something you want to change to. Okay,
I'll do that, all right, very good, Thank you appreciate it.
And as I was saying earlier too, there's even varying
degrees of pleated filters. In fact, there's even one out there.
It would require configuration of where the filter goes, but

(06:00):
there's four inch four inch thickness of filters that are pleated.
Think about the additional surface area you have, and those
only need to be changed every six months because there's
more surface but a pleated you know, if you've got
a twenty by twenty flat panel filter, that's your surface

(06:26):
temperature or surface filtering area. And then if you've got
a twenty by twenty and it's pleated, well, that's a
big difference. All those plats have more surface area. It's
going to filter out more pollutants or materials. And then

(06:48):
you get into the ultra allergens, which really can filter
down to viruses. I think it's like point three microns
and that they have a rating on those. I think
that's a MERV eleven, So that's a pretty strong filtering
not saying she needs that probably doesn't. That five panel's

(07:11):
not picking up anything. Eh, you still need a filter
in there, that's for sure. But I go with the pleted.
I go to the pleted all the time, not necessarily
the allergen ones, but just a good pleated filter. I
think that is certainly the way to go. And here's
another question. As we're kind of talking about looking forward

(07:34):
of things we need to do. I know I get
asked this question a lot this time of year, is
do I really need to have somebody come out and
do maintenance on my or check my furnace and do
maintenance on it annually? Do I really need to do that? Well,

(07:55):
there's a study out talks about the longevity of Furnit
is being maintained on an annual basis versus not being
maintained at all, and it from looking at it, I
don't have the study in front of me. I just
wanted to bring this up. It's literally like you'll get

(08:19):
an additional four or five years or twenty to twenty
five percent more life of your furnace. And there's so
many heating and cooling companies that would love your business,
and they offer some very good deals, probably anywhere from
eighty bucks to one hundred and twenty bucks to not

(08:43):
just inspect your furnace, but to clean it, to tighten
the connections, to do different tests on it to see
if it's efficient. And then for that that inspection is
off of safety inspection. You know what kind of shape
is the heat exchange? And a lot of people say, oh,
they just want to get into my house to sell

(09:03):
me a furnace. Yeah, there's probably something that'll do that.
But there's also companies that will give you a second
opinion for free if you run into that. Somebody tells
you this is XYZ broken, here's the picture, et cetera.

(09:26):
This is an investment. And I'm not saying HVAC companies
are crooked I'm sure there's some and you should get
a second opinion and when you're ready to make that purchase,
it wouldn't get wouldn't be a bad idea to get
a third estimate. Why not? You can compare what you're getting,

(09:52):
what it's saying, how they're doing, what the warranty is.
But they have that inspected, I think is a great idea.
You're going to extend the life of that unit. They're
probably going to give you a year long discount on
parts if something goes down, and there's also some priority

(10:12):
service calls. In other words, if it breaks down, you
might move up the ladder versus someone who's not part
of their ongoing inspections of their furnace. So look into it.
I think it's a it is a smart thing to
have done in your home. All right, Well, take a break, Jeff,

(13:12):
a little home improvement, maintenance and repair, we are as
we work our way through the weekend. You're at home
with Gary Sullivan. Let's get to the phones, and we've
got Jeff Jeff welcome.

Speaker 4 (13:24):
Yeah, to continue on about the furnace filters. Where I
used to work, we changed them regularly the first first
of the month whenever we could, and we always used
the cheap fiber filters. And the installer at the time
I talked to him a couple of times. He recommended
the fiber filters most of it in most cases, because

(13:46):
if you once they get dirty, you change them more often.
And actually a little of dust on their heads to
the filter process and the where the expensive filters put
more drag on your motor make your motor work harder

(14:06):
to you know, because you're running through all that filter
and the dust too.

Speaker 1 (14:11):
Well. I agree and I disagree. There are different types
of pleated filters. In fact, when it gets really cold
or really hot out, Jeff, I'll tell people if you're
running a high efficiency filter, I was talking about ones

(14:31):
that actually filter viruses out. It does diminish the airflow
through the duckwork to a degree. Maybe you're not quite
warming that back bedroom well enough, and I tell them
to pull that out and put the cheapest filter in
to get better airflow. However, the filter I was talking about,

(14:51):
I think is a really good compromise I'm very familiar
with those panel filters. They're good for thirty days period.
They filled dust bunnies. Okay, they let a lot pass
through too. But if you go with the pleated filter,
and I'm not talking the ultra allergen, I'm talking about

(15:13):
a MERV rating of about five or six, which is
a good middle of the road, you do have more
surface area so you can keep them in longer, and
it really doesn't diminish. Obviously, if it got very dirty,
it would diminish airflow, but in that ninety days, I

(15:34):
don't see that happening. And you can always change them
in sixty days. I'll change mine about sixty days, especially
around the holidays, Thanksgiving to Christmas, where there's a lot
of you know, house traffic and different things, more dust
if you will, Yeah, yeah, yeah, but you know, as

(15:55):
long as you got something in there. I appreciate the input.
That's just my feelings on it.

Speaker 4 (16:01):
Oh yeah, I can understand both ways for sure.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
Yeah, that's why I said I feel strongly both ways. Ye.
Good weekend, Gary, all right, Jeff, thanks for the call.
Appreciate it. Let's go to Ken Ken.

Speaker 6 (16:12):
Welcome, Hey, Gary, go. Yeah, my wife's my wife's house.
The concrete driveways is poured to three sections and two
sections on the right hand side of it. Are now
thinking to the point where they caused the concrete to crack,
And I was just trying to determine the best way to,

(16:34):
you know, like you would say, do a cause and
effect and repair this, and you know that I just
don't know where to get starts.

Speaker 1 (16:42):
You So the you know, the effect is it's cracked.
So if we patch that, we're not we're covering up
the crack. Okay, and that may be good enough. But
what's going on and you're in you know, in Florida,
So we got sinkholes, we got some unstable ground at
some places, maybe under your driveway, maybe not under your driveway.

(17:07):
I'd say your options are this, and I can tell
you how to do that in terms of patching it,
but you might want to since it's already sinking, you
might want to take a look at what they call
mud jacking, slab jacking, concrete leveling, where they drill into
the slab and they pump us cmentatious grouting beneath it

(17:29):
and they actually lift the slab and they'll lift it
where that crack will be almost not noticeable, to be
honest with you, and they'll patch that crack and then
you've taken care of the cause and the effect. Now,
if you don't want to do that, you want to
just patch the crack, it may continue to sink or

(17:54):
it may have stopped. If it's wider than a half inch,
you would want to use a self leveling euro thinge
crack filler. If it's less than a half an inch,
you could just use what they call regular crack and seal.
It's an acrylic latex concrete patch that you can just

(18:17):
pour in.

Speaker 6 (18:20):
All right, Well, the biggest thing was going to ask
you was the one thing I've noticed that the street
that we live on is we've the house twenty plus
years old. The actual road itself has not been paved
in over twenty five years, and there's sections of the
road that are actually sinking as well.

Speaker 1 (18:38):
Yeah, so it sounds like they're yeah, exactly. You know,
the top is only as good as the base, and
the base, you know, it's prepared, it's got you know,
gravel and all that, but it's not going to stabilize
a sinkhole. Right, So I think one of the things

(18:59):
they you might look at if you're having that it's
put under pressure, so it takes a path least resistance.
There's no guarantee on that either. If you do go
with the self leveling, what you might ask is if
there is a warranty, a lot of them will come
back and touch it up over a period of three years.
But I think that's something I would investigate. Based on

(19:21):
what you're telling me, we're going to learn about how
to keep those gutters free and free flowing. That's next
as we continue at Home with Gary Sullivan. Help for

of dry weather up this way, so we're seeing a
lot of leaves falling and the colors are changing already,
and it'll be be in full swing right before we

Speaker 1 (22:58):

of leaf drop, so we got to keep those leaves.

just a matter of saying, yesterday, I'm going to do

feet of gutter they have. So please feel free to
give us a call or visit the website and we can.
We'll be happy to help any way.

Speaker 1 (24:37):
We can, you definitely make it easy. And you know,
I start off today's show actually knowing I was gonna
have you on saying, you know, if you don't do
anything in your gutters, just make me a promise. Come
November tenth or fifth. You got to clean those gutters.
And if it's going to require a ladder and you're
gonna get up and you're going to scoop that gunk

(24:59):
out of your gutters, and if you don't, you will
have problems. Is that fair to say it is?

Speaker 7 (25:06):
Yeah?

Speaker 8 (25:06):
If the gutters, I mean it's one of those things
where you'd be amazed. How much damage can you know
small overflow can cause when it comes to you know,
wet basement's foundation damage, you would rot. So if the
gutters have even a little bit of debris in them,
and that debris flows down to the down spout and
clogs the down spout and the gutters overflow, you're you're
you're backing water up into places it's not supposed to

(25:28):
be and causing all sorts of headaches and damage. You're right,
once the gutters are down, if you can, if you
don't have gutter brush, you don't have a way to
keep them out of there. You blow them out or
clean them out before winter, because that's when things can
get really messy.

Speaker 1 (25:41):
Randy. For people who maybe have not heard us talk
about the gut or brush, explain what it is and
the simplicity of installation.

Speaker 8 (25:53):
Yeah, it's just basically it's a simple cylinder shaped brush
that comes in three foot lengths. It's almost like a
bit oversized bottle brush that you slide right into your
gutter channel and create a big filter in your gutter.
So there are three foot sections you slide into your gutter,
filling them end to end, and there's no tools, no fasteners,

(26:13):
nothing screwed into your gutter. Nothing's interfering with your roofing shingles.
So it's just a very very simple alternative to some
of the screens and covers and other gutter guard solutions.

Speaker 1 (26:22):
That have been around for a long time.

Speaker 8 (26:24):
But you're basically fill your gutters with this big cylinder
shape brush. We've got six different diameters to protect just
about any any size gutter and channel that's out there,
and it creates a filter that it's very easy to
install and very easy to maintain. At some point, I
guess any of these gutter systems are going to require
maintenance from time to time. And that's one of the
things people really like about gutter brush is not well, yeah,

(26:50):
pull them out, shake them out, and slide them back in.

Speaker 1 (26:51):
It's very very easy, right, It'll make that chore a
lot easier and you may not even have to use it.
I know on my whole house there's just one gutter.
I got to do that about maybe every other year
or every three years. A little shake and that's it.
The rest are still there and in position. And what
it does is the leaves and stuff that fall, they

(27:12):
just can't get into the gutter. They're laying on the
top of the bristles and then they blow off. No
problem with water getting down into the gutter, like some
of the caps and screens that go over gutters. Correct.

Speaker 8 (27:25):
Yeah, that's one of the problems we hear about the
other systems is there's a lot of options like a
gutter cover or a screen. And what typically happens when
you covered most of your gutters with a piece of
metal and you get a heavy rain, that water comes
down your roofline very quickly. A lot of the water
passes right over that gutter guard and comes off your roof.

Speaker 7 (27:45):
Same with screens.

Speaker 8 (27:46):
As dirt and dust and pollen and things like that
are coming off your roof, that tends to fill the
cells and the screens and covers. It creates kind of
a mat that water can't get into your gutter.

Speaker 1 (27:57):
Right, So folks, there's no tools. You don't have to
cut it. It folds into itself, no fasteners, don't have
to modify the roof. So it's an inexpensive, effective and
easy way to protect the gutters. And it's got some
added benefits too. I know after after you had the
gutter brush for a while, you realized it really helped

(28:19):
with a reduction of ice dams.

Speaker 7 (28:22):
Yeah, we did. It's funny.

Speaker 8 (28:24):
The first couple of years we were in business, we
started getting more and more reports from customers, especially in
northern climates with a lot of snow and ice, that
had faced problems with icicles and ice dams in the past,
and they told us that since they installed the brush,
brush is black in color, so when black gets exposed to.

Speaker 7 (28:41):
A little bit of sunlight or even even in.

Speaker 8 (28:43):
Cold weather, it tends to warm up a little bit.
And we had a lot of people telling us that
they've had substantially less trouble with ice build up and
ice dams since they've installed it, So it's been a
great additional benefit.

Speaker 1 (28:54):
How about commercial buildings, Are they catching on metal buildings
and things like that because they have some of these
seven or eight inch gutters doing much business with buildings
like that.

Speaker 8 (29:06):
We are, Actually, that's one of our fastest growing areas
is on these you know, large commercial buildings. Uh you know,
metal buildings, pole barns, agricultural buildings, airplane hangars. There's there's
big you know, big gutter systems and and uh on
these commercial structures that that just don't have many options
to keep think debris on. So we make the brushes

(29:27):
all the way up to seven and eight inches in
diameter to to fill and protect those larger gutter systems.
And we're having a lot of great feedback from commercial customers.
You know.

Speaker 1 (29:36):
One of the things we talk about a lot on
this show of Randy, especially in the last couple of years,
is pest control keeping squirrels, birds, mosquitos and all that.
Protected gutters really diminish those claims.

Speaker 7 (29:53):
They do.

Speaker 8 (29:53):
Yeah, they they stop that standing water from building up
in gutters that can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and
we have a a lot of customers that tell us
that that they don't have as much problem with leaves,
but they've got problems with birds that approaching or nesting
in their gutters or rodents that are that are finding
their way into those areas, and so a lot of
people use the brush just as a preventative measure measure

(30:14):
to keep critters and pests.

Speaker 7 (30:15):
Out out of those areas.

Speaker 1 (30:17):
I'm sure there's some place of the hoa's, you know,
where they're managing a bunch of condo buildings or something
like that, if they were to look into doing something
with gut or brush. Is there volume discounts available? I
know we got this deal going wrong right now for
four days of thirty percent off, But somebody's got a
big project, can they contact you and kind of discuss that.

Speaker 8 (30:41):
Absolutely, Yes, we work with hoas and property managers to
try to help them protect multi unit buildings, and same
with contractors too. We work with contractors that are finding
it to be a simple, profitable item they can offer
their customers as as easy as it is to install
for a homeowner or do it yourself for a lot
of people would prefer not to be up on a

(31:01):
root for a ladder. So we get a lot of
great feedback from landscapers, you know, general contractors, pressure washers
that are already at a home on a ladder and
can easily offer this to their customers.

Speaker 1 (31:13):
Well, I finally got to the age, Randy, where I'm
not a big fan of climbing up ladders, and the
gut or brush certainly answers the question to that dilemma.
And you guys are family owned, made in the USA
since two thousand and four, and you get a high
satisfaction rate, I'm sure we do.

Speaker 8 (31:34):
Yeah, it's been a fun project. My dad and I
started the company together in two thousand and four, and
it's been a really fun business to work on together
and talk to a lot of great, great customers through
the years and providing a simple solution that has been helpful,
and we've got primarily great, great feedback.

Speaker 7 (31:51):
We have a very generous.

Speaker 8 (31:53):
Warranty and performance guarantee on the product, so if somebody
is not happy for any reason, we certainly want to
hear about it and make sure we we provide everybody
with the best experience we can.

Speaker 1 (32:03):
You know, Ranny, when you say right, now at that discount,
you could probably do a house for two hundred and
fifty three hundred bucks somewhere in that neighborhood. We hear
a lot about different covers that go over gutters you
mentioned them before, that are professionally installed. Some times you
got to do modifications of the roof and everything else.

(32:26):
But if I'm not mistaken, that's about three grand, isn't it?
At least in many cases.

Speaker 8 (32:32):
Yeah, we talk to customers all the time who've just
gotten a quote from you, from some of these larger
companies that are providing different screens and microscreens or covered.

Speaker 7 (32:42):
Systems, and I mean that it's shocking some of the
numbers you year back.

Speaker 8 (32:45):
I think I talked to somebody the other day that
told me that they'd gotten a quote for I think
close to eight thousand dollars for it, and it was
it was less than one hundred and fifty feet or
two hundred feet of gutter. And for that kind of money,
there's a I mean, you can almost install new gutters.

Speaker 1 (32:58):
Every every couple of years.

Speaker 7 (32:59):
If you're hear, Yeah, some of those systems are very
very expensive.

Speaker 1 (33:03):

(37:40):
ten minutes before the top of the hour and you're
at home with Gary Sullivan taking your calls at eight
hundred eight two three eight two five five. Let's get
back to the phone calls in Michelle.

Speaker 3 (37:51):
Welcome, Hi Garius Michelle. I was I was talking to
the gentleman that answered the phone, and I'll just tell
you I live in Pasco County, Florida and live in
a stucco house. Okay, there's one side of the house

(38:12):
where there was a flower bed that had been I
guess piling up with dirt and malt, and we finally
just took all of that stone, dirt and maulch out.
And when we did, we saw that there was a
crack going across the bottom of the house. And then
it actually started cracking into a hole. And so now

(38:36):
there's a big hole on the side of the base
of the home, just that one side. Who would you
recommend to repair something like that, because we have looked
on YouTube to see how to repair it, but it
looks like it's very involved and I want it done right.

Speaker 1 (38:56):
So let me make sure I got this. Okay. So
the foundation in itself, there's a crack that goes horizontally
in the foundation, okay, And then when it gets near
the end of the house, you say there's a.

Speaker 3 (39:11):
Hole, No, it's more about a third of the way through.
It looks like the crack started to turn into a hole,
but there's still a crack. It's say too last the
last third and then the two thirds.

Speaker 1 (39:29):
Okay, what is the hole in? Is it in the concrete,
the concrete block, the ground? What is the hole?

Speaker 3 (39:37):
It looks like it's in the concrete, okay, and then
behind it is a mesh of metal nets like.

Speaker 1 (39:47):
Oh, okay, so the hole is probably in the stucco
then correct that is that is right? Okay? So the
metal mess you're seeing is it's lathing. It's what the
stucco is applied to for it can grip onto the house. Okay.

(40:08):
So it's got like a little diamond pattern in it.
And when you patch the stucco, you push it against
that laughing, and it produces keys which holds the stucco
in place. So what you need. So it may be
two different types of people that are going to be

(40:29):
able to take care of that. As far as the
hole in the stucco, there are stucco repair people that
repair stucco, patch stucco, So a mason or stucco repair
I would google near you. Some painters will do it

(40:54):
that will address the hole. As far as the crack
in the foundation, you're going to have to tell me
how big is that crack? And I know it's horizontal,
so it's probably there was.

Speaker 3 (41:10):
Along the whole side of the house near the bottom.
What I think happened as I was doing my research
was we purchased the house used and people kept adding
malt and then rocks, and then malt and then more rocks,

(41:31):
and it got up so high that there was no
way for the foundation to breathe. And so when we
finally took all of that out, that's what we found
was that crack. It's just a fine crack.

Speaker 1 (41:47):
Okay, Well, I think what's happened is I think there
was some settling somewhere in that foundation which has caused
it to And I think it's also related to that stucco.
Not that the stucco caused it, but you probably had

(42:07):
some settlings. So the person that's going to be able
to repair the stucco will probably simply repair that crack
in the foundation by applying like a mortar or a
concrete patch over that crack. And you'll need to watch it.
I mean, I I don't know if there is some
instability and it's going to crack again, or whether there

(42:31):
was a little instability it caused some stress. It caused
the crack, It caused the stucco to become compromised. And
it's finished, so you know there there. You know, you
can have it inspected by an engineer. But I I'd
patch the stucco, patch the crack, and let's see where

(42:52):
it goes from there.

Speaker 3 (42:54):
And you said to look up a mason, Yeah, you.

Speaker 1 (42:58):
Can look up stuck repair or a mason. Masons do
stucco work and brick work, and that's who's going to
make that repair. Ask around the neighborhood, see if they've
had any stucco patching. I mean stucco's you know, it's
a powder, it's mixed with water. It's they'll clean out
that hole, they'll square it up, they'll push it to

(43:20):
the lath. They'll create the patch and then somebody's gonna
have to primate and paint it. But maybe they won't
have to prime in in paint. I gotta have to
see the job. But uh, sometimes painters, but stuck a
uh people do stucco repair, and masons would be the
place to call. All right, thank you very much for
the call. I appreciate it. And hey, let me remind
