Speaker 1 (00:28):
All right, the weekends upon us. Welcome aboard at home
with Gary Selvin, talk a little home improvement. Happy to
have you if you'd like to join us, it's eight
hundred eight two three eight two five five. Feel free
to grab a line, happy to chat about your home
and let's kick things off with you. Don welcome.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Hi, gay.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
I talked to you last week about my garage door
and everything worked out fine, and you're a brave man.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
This week's problem is my oven. Oh oh, the gas oven.
Gass the gas oven, and it just heats up real slow.
Now it didn't work fine before, but I'm thinking that
maybe that burner is dirty in there.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Yeah, it probably is. There's there's something that impedes the
gas flow is usually the problem. Is it a newer
one or an older one?
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Oh, it's probably five to seven years old.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Yeah, yeah, you still got the uh manual at all?
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Or that'd be I probably do somewhere.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yeah. Well, I take a look at that, and there's
usually a trouble shooting page on there that or get
the Usually on those ovens, it's a when you open
the oven door down at the bottom, there's a there's
a plate with a model number, and you probably know
the manufacturer if you google the model number and the
(01:57):
manufacturer and troubleshoot the issue. I'm sure it's not putting
a code on an oven. You know, furnaces will at
least do that. But you get a troubleshooting page, and
I think you're going to probably be directed to the
burner and and how to clean it and what to do.
(02:18):
But I feel pretty certain that's what it is. But
they're all going to be different. That's why you got
to get that get that manto out and see what
you can do there.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Okay, alrighty, I appreciate your help. You take care of it.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
All right, thanks? Don take care. Yeah, yeah, not necessarily
an appliance repair person myself. I had a weird thing
happened that about three weeks ago. I was I was
Danny Knows. I was whining about my new refrigerator that
had numerous service calls.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
I wouldn't say whining, but just complaining.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Complaining, yes, yeah, And then after we finally after several weeks,
got those resolved. I don't have a gas oven, but
I have an electric oven, and I'm sitting there in
the element, which is like a ceramic coating. I guess
had a little issue then it was old. It was
like twelve fifteen years old, and all of a sudden,
(03:15):
you know, a flash of flame going from the element
through the through the through the oven. It was. It
was a little alarming, and anyway, I had to replace
the element in it. And turned out to be not
a big deal, but got my attention, got my attention,
(03:36):
all right. Our phone number, if you'd like to join
us again is eight hundred eighty two three eight two
five five. Feel free to join us. Cleaning up before
the holidays, after the holidays. A lot of it has
to do with cadvatry. Maybe it's some things after you
get through this holiday, you just kind of start looking
(03:58):
at your house and you're going, you know, we need
a little we need a little pop, we need a
little pizzeas. And one of the things just recently, I
guess our cabinets are twenty years old, eighteen years old,
somewhere in that neighborhood. And you hear me talk about
(04:23):
a product called Millsic and there's there's all kinds of
products for cleaning cabinets, and you know, you all hear
you know, use a little lemon oil on that, or
use a little xyz on that. And there's some cabinet
polishes cleaners that you really don't want to use because
(04:50):
of the residue. And you know, if you've got some
for mica topped cabinets, that's one thing. If you've got
some cherry wood cabinets, maybe that's another. In fact, I
know it is. I mean when you have a formca
cabinet and you know for mica is basically paper and
(05:17):
plastic on the surface is the plastic and it's compressed
together to create a panel which is in glue to
a wood type material. Nothing wrong with that. I'm just
saying it doesn't it needs to be cleaned. Then that's
basically what you're really striving to do. What I don't
(05:40):
want you to use is use any type of silicones
or waxes are just not good. They leave a little
bit of residue, a little bit of a haze. They
still don't really clean it up. And whether it's for
mica or wood, you don't really want to use that
(06:03):
you really want in fact, if you want to just
clean that up and you don't really know what's on them,
it sounds strange. But what you can use is is
mineral spirits paint dinner. It's not going to hurt to finish,
(06:25):
damp in a cloth um scrub around the handles. There's
probably a little bit of residual there and a little
soft and gummy type material. Don't use a wax that
contains a soft wax. That's going to overtime get gummy
(06:46):
and dirty and it's actually going to exacerbate the problem.
The Millsik product that I mentioned is unique, and I
think there's one. I believe it's Wagman's. It's been a
while since I've used it. It isn't an aerosol, and
it is a it's a cleaner and a preservative. It
(07:07):
works real well. The Millstick is an oil that removes wax, oils, dirt.
It does an excellent job, and it really does. I
mean in our kitchen. I don't know how your kitchen
(07:28):
is set up, but really, when you think about the
dirt we have inside our home and especially in the
kitchen area, in a lot of cases, it's fortified with
oils because that's where we're cooking, and our hands have
(07:49):
oils on them, and that's what we're grabbing. Is the
doors or around the handles or the knobs, and so
grime is not just removed with water. I mean it
needs something to cut through that. And you can if
(08:11):
you're honest and you're really looking at the kdvantry, and
we were, and there were you know, the upper cabinets,
especially where you're reaching and maybe not always grabbing the
knob and just kind of opening the doors, you could
see that there was a film. That's that's that's kind
(08:32):
of really what you noticed. There was a film. There
was a I'm not going to say it was greasy,
it what didn't really look like that, just it was
a film. It was it was a cloudy film and
probably cause from cooking oils in our hands. The millsake
removes that if anyone had waxed those cabinets, it removes
(08:54):
that if it's not a formica cabinet and it real wood,
it will penetrate and it will rejuvenate that and man,
it did really make that cabinetry pop. Another thing is
(09:15):
the is the granite. If you have granted I've talked
about this, it was years ago. There is a Jaws
makes a granite uh cleaner, which is very good. It
makes it a little bit more defined. And another cleaning
(09:40):
company called Grantite Gold. They make a polish wipe, they
make a cleaner, they make a sealer, and they make these.
It's it's so it's kind of like a cloth, like
a Clorox cloth cloth, but it's not Clorox. It's a
wipe and it's called Granite Gold polishing granite polishing wipes.
(10:04):
And I had some in the cabinet, and uh, at
the point, I haven't used those for a couple of years,
and I I used one, and it is it still
amazes me. And I used to used to say that
when I used to use it all the time. I
just haven't used it for a while. It really puts
(10:27):
a sheen to the granite. And depending on I guess
what kind of granite you have on mind, it's you know,
a brand and a Bayesian. I'm not gonna say circles,
but you know it's mother Nature made it. So it's
not an exact pattern, but it really made that pop
(10:47):
and it looked fantastic. So as you're working in your kitchen, uh,
maybe after entertaining, take a look or before take a
look at those cabinets and see if they could use
a little attention, and also the granite, and if during
the holidays too, if you're thinking about or you're concerned
(11:08):
about the need to seal granite. Some types of granite
need ceilings, some don't. I forget which ones the harder,
the dark colors of the light colors. I'd have to
look that up again. But do a little test. This
is the best way is just take a tablespoon or teaspoon, teaspoon,
(11:29):
a little teaspoon of water and put a dollop of
that water on that countertop and give it a minute.
And if that dollup is still sitting on that countertop
like a little puddle of water, you're good. You're good.
It's not penetrating that granite. If it starts soaking in,
(11:51):
there's less of a dollop of water. After you know,
thirty seconds or so, it's sinking in to that granted.
And you know, if that's wine or kool aid and
it's sinking into that granted, it's going to stain it.
So you want to be proactive and make sure that's
(12:13):
you know, good and sealed before you start entertaining on
a regular basis. So I want to pass out along
also all right. Your phone number to join us is
eight hundred eight two three eight two five five uh
waiting for your calls. Happy to talk about your projects

Gerry Salvin. Let's go to Jeff. Jeff welcome.
Speaker 6 (15:21):
All right, Gary, listen, this is a quick question. You
had a segment yesterday talking about cleaning jet tubs and
hot tubs, and I was driving and I didn't have
a chance to write the name of the product down
that you had your guest on, so I'm just looking
for the name of that product.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
Yeah, it's called Awesome and it's a H H S
O NME dot com.
Speaker 6 (15:47):
Okay, And is that something that they have to order
online or is that generally available in box stores or.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
It's not in box stores. They do have a store locator,
but you can also online there.
Speaker 6 (16:03):
Okay, all right, very good for your health.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
You're quite welcome, thank you, and Jim welcome.
Speaker 7 (16:11):
Yes, I have a pet Bryant Real arch. It has
about a three inch trip in it? Would that men?
Speaker 1 (16:22):
Sure? The tear mender?
Speaker 7 (16:24):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (16:25):
Yeah? And what type of fabric is it? Do you know?
Or all right, what type of fabric is it? Do
you know?
Speaker 7 (16:32):
Oh, it's a real fine fabric. Real I'm not sure.
Speaker 1 (16:38):
Is it Is it a sheer where you can see
through it or is it?
Speaker 7 (16:41):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Yeah, so okay, so you can mend it, but I
think the tear mender is going to show uh in
a sheer, you know, like if it were blue jeans
or a sweatshirt or you know, a cushion for an
outdoor furniture or something something like that. You can certainly
take some cloth behind it, put the tear mender on it,
(17:06):
and you patch it on the back side of that
and kind of pull that seam together. But with a shear,
you're going to see that.
Speaker 7 (17:13):
Okay, there is a brian behind it.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
Yeah, Well you'll have to decide if you if you
put a piece of material there and put an adhesive,
if you could see that, that's not going to work.
Speaker 7 (17:26):
Okay, you have to be real careful with that.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
It's a glue, you know, so it's a not a paste.
I mean it comes in a tube. I've used it
a multiple times. I don't it's almost got like a
rubber base to it. I mean, I guess all glues.
We got to be a little careful.
Speaker 7 (17:46):
Okay, where do I get that now?
Speaker 1 (17:49):
At tear mender dot com.
Speaker 7 (17:51):
Yeah, okay, you buy a box stores.
Speaker 1 (17:55):
They got a store locator on her website. I'm sure
they'll tell you what store. I know that's see do
it best hardware stores some of them have it. I
don't know if face does or not. And uh, you
might be able to get into craft stores also, but
they'll have a listing. Thank you, thank you, You're welcome.
(18:15):
Thank you, my boy. Also on the other call with
the guest stove, just just google. You know, guests get
the g guest stoves, and you know when it wasn't
heating quickly, you know, we said it's probably the burner,
something along nose lines. Quick look at their manual. You
(18:38):
have turn off the burner, remove the grate and burner cap,
paper clip or toothbrush and clean the small holes around
the burner ring and make sure the cap sits flat
when it's reassembled. Making sure the cap is centered and
fully flat on the burner. The other cause could be
low gas pressure. But if you have other gas supplants
(19:01):
that are running just fine, probably not the problem. If
you have other gas appliances that are running slow, that
very well can also be the problem. The other thing
is moisture in the burner, and that's something you can check,
like if you're burning a pot of water. All right,
you can join us. It's eight hundred eight two three

Speaker 2 (22:43):
Hey Gary, how are you doing today?
Speaker 1 (22:45):
Doing great? Thank you wonderful.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
I've got a seventy five house, good solid wood cabinets
in the kitchen, but they're just the hinges aren't closing anymore.
I'm wondering what I could do if I need to
switch out they, or if there's some other maintenance I
can help.
Speaker 1 (23:04):
With well, so are they bent out or are they loose?
Or like if you pull that door out to close them,
you know, if you jiggle them or something, can you
get them to close in? Because there could be different
things we could do.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
If I push them closed, they open up about an
anchche and a half okay or anything like that.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
Have you checked to see if the screws are tight
into the wood cabinet themselves?
Speaker 2 (23:37):
First, I honestly haven't touched them yet.
Speaker 1 (23:43):
Okay. I think what you're gonna do, You're gonna get
the feel of it of what's kind of making them,
you know, do that, and the first thing I would
do is make sure that the cabinet hinges are tight. Now,
be careful. I mean, I don't want you giving it
everything you got on those screws and strip them or anything.
(24:04):
But just make sure they're snug, okay. And you may
find that they're just loose and that's what's causing a problem,
or they may just be able to if you loose
if you take you know, once you tighten them up,
if it doesn't help, I would loosen the screws on
(24:25):
the bottom hinge and see, you know, when you start
closing the door, then see if there's resistance, because it
may need to be have a little backing behind the hinge.
So if you do it against the cabinet, not the door,
but the cabinet itself, and you loosen those screws and
(24:46):
maybe take them out and maybe use a toothpick, couple toothpicks,
just put them behind the hinge, run the screws back
in and see if that kicks it forward enough or
allows it to lay flatter. So I would look, is
it happen on all of them or just one or two?
Speaker 2 (25:07):
Two or three?
Speaker 1 (25:08):
Yeah, I got one too, I need to address. In fact,
you've got to just made a note. And it's the
one that's most often used. And it's a base cabinet
in the trash cans behind it, and it for the
last month probably hasn't closed all the way. Sometimes I
(25:29):
can just push it. It feels like there's a little
bit of resistance, but I would so it may just
need to have that hinge, even on the door where
it's flat, just kicked forward a little bit and that'll
create a little more tension to pull it against the cabinet.
But that's where I would check first check to make
(25:50):
sure the screws are taut, and then maybe loosen it on,
you know, try to get and see, you know, if
you loosen all the screws, if if they're tight and
it's still doing it, loosen all the screws and just
see what. You know, which hinge needs to be kicked
out a little bit, the one on the door, the
(26:11):
one on the on the box, and you'll probably be
able to adjust it that way.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
All right, I'll give it a shot. Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
You're quite welcome. Thank you. Take care. Yeah, and I
do that on doors all the times too. You know,
if you start having doors that are closing themselves or
won't stay open, and or you know, you close them
and they open back up. There's just a lot of
times it's just building out that hinge and fiddling with that.
And you know, I've even put penny, put a penny.
(26:43):
We're not making pennies anymore, but you put them behind
the hinge, losing a screw, slide a penny on there
and just pulls it out just a little bit. May
very well help you out. All right, let's go to Diana. Diana, welcome,
Thank you.
Speaker 8 (26:57):
It's a player talking to you.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
Thank you.
Speaker 8 (27:00):
If you're as half as half as nice in person
and you are on your show, you're a really special person.
Speaker 1 (27:06):
It depends if I'll ask that Danny, if you asked Danny,
or if you asked my wife.
Speaker 8 (27:14):
Well, my kids always said I was a terrorist, but
the airline thinks that too. So well, you're always respectful, respectful,
you're non condescending, you don't cut people off, You're polite.
It's a pleasure talking to you. What I wanted to
ask you about, and I always want to call, but
I'm embarrassed to call. But you make people feel comfortable.
(27:37):
Thank you. It is the liquid ice melt. I had
been looking up about it in Colwell. I called Ice
Solutions and the owner called me back from Colorado, really
nice person and talked about it to art by Arctic
Arctic Armor, and it was sixteen ninety ninety nine for
(27:57):
a five gallon, but the shipping was four dollars, so
that was cost prohibitive. So before this snow we had
last week, I was able to get something on Amazon
overnight and was Petro ice melt a gallon. It did nothing?
Speaker 3 (28:16):
Is that?
Speaker 1 (28:17):
Well, let me ask you, because there are so many
different types of ice melters, and there's even like a
preventer that you put on before the snow which keeps
the snow from Okay, so one of the things you're
out of Cincinnati, and I know one of the things
(28:37):
where that is. In fact, even the city this year
decided they weren't going to use pre treatment on streets.
They used to use beet juice, I think, and it
was to minimize the accumulation of snow before a storm.
But what your environment has happens a lot is it
(29:03):
rains and then changes to snow. And what happens then
is we put this preventer on and we have a
decent rain, and then it changes the snow and it's
kind of neutralized or washed the preventer off. I can't
remember the name of the product I used to recommend,
(29:25):
and it's probably been twenty or twenty five years ago
on this show. And it really depend on each storm
whether it was effective or not. Sometimes when it was
really really cold, there was no rain and I had
sprayed that on I think it was called freeze Fighter
or something along those lines, and I'd sprayed it on
(29:46):
a concrete it would it would prevent maybe the first
inch or so from accumulating and then in the next
inch would just be a little slushy. And it was
good for preventing a couple of two three inch as
the snow. And that was about it. So I would
imagine they're all kind of along those same lines.
Speaker 8 (30:08):
This is a preventter. And it said straight like a
couple hours before the story, right, and my husband followed
the directions. Yeah, completely, And it's just it's not cheap.
It was like thirty seven dollars a gallon. Wow, some
are more, some or less, but I just got the
over night.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
Yeah. Well, I quit talking about it because I didn't
think the value was there. Number one and number two.
A lot of times when we had snow, we always
got the rain first and it changed the snow so
it was even less effective. But even when it didn't rain,
(30:45):
it was okay. But it wasn't saving me much work
at all.
Speaker 8 (30:51):
That was the whole idea, because the snowblower is not working. Yeah,
and I thought, great, this will help one gallon goes
very little.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
Yeah, i'd probably look at Magnesium chloride is a wonderful
ice melter. It's a granular product, minimally corrosive compared to
some of the other ice melters very safe for grass melts,
snow down the zero.
Speaker 8 (31:20):
And this one was magnesium.
Speaker 1 (31:22):
Yeah. Yeah, Well I didn't like the.
Speaker 8 (31:26):
Pullets because they stick and get gummy. Yeah, maybe I'm
just putting it out wrong.
Speaker 1 (31:32):
Well, if yours are getting gummy, then another thing to
try would be the next step would be calcium chloride,
which just make sure is pure calcium chloride. A lot
of times it goes under all kinds of different brand names,
and ice melter would be one of them. And one
of the things that it does it I know, the
(31:55):
magnesium cloride. I don't know if it's say it gets gummy,
but it gets it does it does get. There is
a residue calcium chloride. It's a residue, but it's more

two three A two five five and Walt Welcome, Thanks
for calling.
Speaker 9 (35:35):
Thanks Garry, second time caller, long time listener long. I'm oh, yeah,
I live in Charleston, oll Non Pleasant, South Carolina. And
I think I told you last time I called. They
used to play on the radio and then they changed
to a sports format. Yeah, so now I listen to
(35:57):
you on iHeart.
Speaker 1 (35:59):
But I like.
Speaker 9 (36:00):
What I like about that is I can carry my
phone around and do my work and I can listen
to you all over.
Speaker 1 (36:07):
It's very convenient. I agree.
Speaker 9 (36:10):
Yeah. Two things. I I was on hold, so I
missed that I caught the tail end of a collar
that was talking about cabinets and I picked it. I
picked it up when you said putting screws, don't don't
strip the screw, don't crank on it. What I do,
(36:35):
just as a tip, is I put a little wood
glue on the screw and then then then it kind
of fixes that stripping for sure.
Speaker 1 (36:46):
In fact, another little tip of that is you know
if if you have stripped it in that hole is
kind of worn out. This just goes way back as
just a little couple pieces or maybe just one piece
of tooth with a little wood glo. Yeah, I heard
you say that. That in there, Boy, that grips really nicely.
Speaker 9 (37:07):
Okay, I like either one. The blue works too.
Speaker 1 (37:12):
Ye.
Speaker 9 (37:13):
My main my main call. And you've probably heard this
a thousand times, but I want to refinish my bill,
doesn't I've lived for thirty years. Today is my sixtieth birthday.
By the by the way, well thank you so much.
(37:36):
But it was my cabinet. It's hard to believe. I
live in a starter neighborhood. But the prices are ridiculous.
Speaker 8 (37:45):
You know.
Speaker 9 (37:45):
My house is a twelve hundred square foot house, one
car garage. But I don't want to replace my cabinets.
I don't think it's worth it to spend a few
thousand dollars. So I want to rEFInd them. I'm going
to replace the hinges, replace the knobs, slight upgrade, lubricate
(38:08):
the drawers with silicone spray.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
Good.
Speaker 9 (38:11):
But I want to know how to And the cabinets
are stained, Okay, I don't want to paint them. But
I think you mentioned mill Sak. I think you did.
I can't remember, but I wanted to know the process
for the cleaning. Sure, you know, because there's you know,
(38:32):
grease and hands seeing stuff all around.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
Yeah. Yeah, when you have a stained cabinet, they're they're
you know, you're not really refinishing because refinishing requires sanding.
Sanding that stain out. That's a big project. So the
mill Sick is an oil that actually this product's over
(38:58):
one hundred years old in a Hunghungarian cabinet maker actually
invented it over one hundred and five years ago and
it's MI L S e K dot com if you
want to take a look at it. But what it does,
which is unique, is it removes old wax. And if
(39:22):
you've been in the house for a while, somebody probably
waxed it at one point. Or used a silicone lemon
oil on it, both of which gets soft and cloudy.
It removes grease from our hands and from cooking, and
it also revitalizes the wood. So I've had people that
(39:44):
have called this show and they were calling about refinishing
a cabinet, painting it, stuff like that, And I asked
them why, and they told me the problem. I said, well,
before you do that, unless you're doing it for cosmetic reasons,
why don't you use millsic and see if we can
and clean that thing up. And I've had many people
over the years ago like, man, you saved me a
big project. It does work, and it's easy to use.
(40:08):
It's literally a matter of using a cotton cloth or
a microfiber towel. And it has uh, it comes in lemon,
it comes in orange, so an orange oil, lemon oil.
I think it even has a holiday sent one like
a cinnamon, which is immaterial. It just has a nice
(40:31):
scent to it. And you put this on this cloth
and you know, you you rub it down and it
and it dissolves wax. It removes grease and the if
it's like a wood cabinet and not a lamon or something,
I mean real wood. It'll make that wood grain pop.
I mean it'll look great.
Speaker 9 (40:53):
Okay, So it's only the one product. It's not a cleaner.
And then and like you said, you verified it for me,
I didn't mean refinished standing and all that, right, I
just wanted to clink because they're stained.
Speaker 3 (41:08):
Yeah, and I.
Speaker 9 (41:10):
Have a problem with painting over stained. I don't know why.
Speaker 1 (41:14):
I just well, first of all, if it's chips, you
can see the stain. So that's always a problem with cabinetry,
no matter. You know, you do a couple of coats
of primer and you still can run into that. But
I'd certainly give this a try. I mean, I don't
know how far a bottle goes. I would say, probably
do your whole kitchen and it might be ten bucks
(41:36):
or so. You know, you take the handles off them
and go after it. I think you'll be well satisfied.
Speaker 9 (41:45):
Yeah, I'm going to upgrade the knobs and the hinges
need to be replaced. But it's only I only didn't
need that one product for everything. There's not a singer,
a finisher.
Speaker 1 (41:58):
That's it. Okay, does a good.
Speaker 9 (42:00):
Job, Okay, Yeah, I've read you mentioned it a lot.
Speaker 1 (42:05):
Yeah, it contains no silicons, contains no waxes, so you know,
it doesn't get cloudy like so many cleaners do. So
I get that a try. I think you'll be very
happy of using that and it'll clean it up quite well.
Be sure to give me a full report, and I
(42:25):
appreciate the call. Thank you, as we you know, this
time of year is really a great time to do
that too. I mean, you know, you're right in the
middle of the probably the heavier kitchen you season. So
whether you do it after the holidays or you do
it before, that's your call. But if they're kind of
borderline and getting, you know, a little grungy. I think
(42:48):
there is a disclaimer on it, and you know a
lot of people won't know what type of finish it's
on there. I don't think you can use it over
a polyurethane, use it over varnish, use over schlack, overlacker.
But I had a varnished m well, a little desk
(43:09):
like your computer sits on. I've used it on that,
and you know, right where my hands would sit on
that desk. It was just it was gooey, dirry, and man,
it knocked that right out. It cleaned that up and
rejuvenated that. Would it look great? It looked great. And again,
if it's a your thing, you're going to probably use
like a six hundred grit sandpaper and knock that off
(43:31):
and then put some your thinge on it. But for
the most part, the mysical will take care of those issues,
all right. Uh so the music plays. Let me give
you the phone number, and I promise it'll be Tom
and Paul. You'll be net If you'd like to join us,
