Speaker 1 (00:30):
All right, the weekends upon us. Welcome. You're at home
with Gary Salvinus. That was brought to you by gutter Brush.
You want to avoid clow gutters this spring, well, then
you need gutter brush. It truly is affordable. It is
easy to install. It works like a charm to keep
those gutters flowing all year round. You can visit it
gutterbrush dot com. You can get a free quote, I

(00:52):
tell you right now for a normal size home, it
will cost you about two hundred and fifty three hundred bucks.
You can install it, no tools needed. If you don't
do ladders, I get it. You can get somebody that
does do a ladder. Yeah, somebody does landscaping, somebody that
does gutters. Somebody cleans windows. They just slide right in.

(01:12):
It's like a giant bottle brush and just slides right in.
So UH checking out good videos and you know a
lot of information there. It's gutter brush dot com. Gutter
brush dot com. All right, talking home improvement as we
do each and every weekend. Feel free to join us.
UH lines are wide open. It's eight hundred eight two

(01:32):
three eight two five five. It looks like the week
of as weather continues to morph into a hopefully drier,
hotter timey year. Right now, a lot of parts of
the country still a lot of rain warming up. Other

(01:53):
people are already enjoying like summer. But this is you know,
usually this is about the time I mean hear you
kind of say, okay, it's going to be nice weather
and things start changing. And one of the things that
starts changing is temperature levels and humidity levels. And a

(02:14):
lot of people maybe have already fired up the air conditioner.
Some people have never turned the air conditioner off. Lucky people.
And if you're in an area where you're just firing
up the air conditioner, well, not a bad idea to
have somebody just do a you know check and get

(02:34):
a service agreement with them, making sure everything's working, friends
up to speed and all that. And you can do
some of that yourself, but always a good idea to
really have somebody really see where you're at, especially if
you start having older units, and also not only watching that,
but the humidity levels they start going up when the

(02:57):
temperature starts going up. We talk about this a lot,
but if you don't have a hygrometer, I really encourage
you to get one or two and if you have
a basement, you put one in the basement, one on
the first floor, and just compare the difference. Cooler damp
area air settles in the lower areas, so your basement

(03:21):
is always cooler, it's always got more moisture in it.
And if you have an air exchanger, like an easy breath,
that will help. If you have a lot of moisture,
it's not going to solve all that problem. You may
have to have a humidifier also, and how you set
your thermostat and your humidistat in your house can make

(03:47):
a big difference. So every year about this time I
go over that. If you're switching from heat to your
air conditioning, here's the way I want you to set
your air conditioning. You see, you pick your temperature. Okay.
Air conditioner is about the best humidifier you can get.
You got the windows closed, you got them locked. Make

(04:07):
sure they're locked. Okay, they'll be tighter and keep more
than humidity out, especially if you live in a really
humid area. All right, you set it whatever you said
that seventy five seventy two. You decide there, set the
thermostat there, and then you come to the fan This
is where we get in trouble. When you set the fan,

(04:30):
you put it on auto in the summertime, that fan
is only going to turn on when the air conditioner
turns on. Do not put it on on because it'll
completely always blowing that air back through the air handlers.
The coils will never dry out, and you'll be blowing

(04:53):
that humidity right back up into the house. So put
it on auto. Gives it a little time to rest,
a little time that those coils to dry out. That'll
help your home humidity also. All right again, it's eight
one hundred eighty two three eight two five five Bobby.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Welcome, thanks for taking my call. I have a I
have a twin sink man made concrete. It looks like
stone countertop in the bathroom. It had it has a
between a flat and a satin machine coating. But uh,

(05:34):
some alcohol spilled out of my razor cleaner system and
it just kind of peeled. Some of it peeled off
like a thin sheet of plastic. And I was wondering.
I thought about silock, saying, but I didn't know what
what you.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Use on that. Well, boy, I wish we knew what
was on there. I bet you do too well.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Unfortunately, the company that installed it is out of business.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Siloxane is probably not going to be the sealer you
would use on that. Siloxane is a total penetrant, and
so a siloxane it's it's a tripolymer of silicones that
penetrate into the concrete and it breathes, so it's not

(06:25):
going to have achine to it. It'll be dead flat.
You won't even tell there's anything on there. Nothing will change.
So it seems to me that you know, trying to
match it up without knowing what's on there. To me,
it's virtually impossible. I can say that it sounds to

(06:45):
me like a high solid type sealer, and it also
sounds like it may be an acrylic or a water
based sealer if rubbing alcohol lifts did that. And here's why.
So we're kind of narrowing it down, but I'm not

(07:06):
going to be able to give you a really great
you know, go get this product. It'll be awesome when
you take rubbing alcohol on a cloth and you go
up to a painted surface in your house and you
just start rubbing it. If it's an oil base or
a solvent based paint, that paint will shine if it's

(07:30):
an acrylic, it will get gummy and begin to remove it.
So if you spilled alcohol on it and it's a
you know, I know it's not paint, but it is
a protecting and it's got to be either water base

(07:51):
or it's got to be a solvent and it peeled up.
It sounds to me like it would be a water
base high solid concrete seiler. Okay, But I since I
don't have a name for you, I think what I
would do is I would get on Amazon or Google

(08:14):
even and put in concrete countertop seiler, water bass sat
and finish and see what pops up. Because I'm just guessing,
but it's a pretty good guess that that's what it is.

(08:35):
But then the question is will it match the other
And I don't know, you may have to just redo
the whole surface, which would just be adding on. You
would probably use like a seven hundred grit wet dry
sponge and that'll just scratch the surface up a little

(08:57):
bit and then you would, you know, put this type
of sealer over the entire countertop, including the spot that's
you know missing. It's a little bit of a gamble, Bobby,
I'm guessing, but it's an educated guess whether we're right,
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Well, I greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your help.

Speaker 5 (12:48):
Yes, Gary, thanks for taking my call.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
You bet you.

Speaker 5 (12:53):
My toilet last night. This happened a year ago also,
but I was able to clear it. The flashed it
and of course the water starts flowing into the well.
It wouldn't flow into the tank. It flowed into the
overflow tube and that was going real fine, filling the
bowl up. But the tank never filled.

Speaker 1 (13:17):
Oh, the supply tank in the back right, it didn't refill.

Speaker 5 (13:22):
Right now. I had to lift the float. That's the
vertical float. The black cylinder lifted up and then let
go and then it started filling. Are there two valves,
one for the overflow and one for the tank.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
Well, the water from the tank goes into the bowl
and then the tank would refill. So there's one valve.

Speaker 5 (13:52):
Oh, okay, we got the There was a tube that
comes out of the valve that goes into the overflow.
I'm assuming that water fills the bowl.

Speaker 1 (14:08):
And the bull, the bull is being fed the water through.
Did you see a little black flapper.

Speaker 5 (14:19):
The flappers down and that's what keeps the water from going.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
Yeah, but when you flush it. When you when you
flush it, you press the handle down, the flapper goes up.
It releases all that water with force into the bowl.
The waste in the water in the bowl is then
down the you know, down the pipe, down the waistline,
and then the water is then refilling the tank that's

(14:51):
coming on.

Speaker 5 (14:51):
But that's just it. It wasn't refilling.

Speaker 1 (14:55):
Well, it sounds to me like your floats stopped, your
your float got kinked. It was it was and giving
it permission to flow to fill the tank.

Speaker 5 (15:03):
Why was the water running out of that black tube
that comes from it, that that goes down the overflow?

Speaker 1 (15:11):
How far down was that tube in the interflow? Is
it just clipped right on the top of it, right right? Okay,
So that's okay.

Speaker 5 (15:20):
With that running and the tank not. That's what got
me concerned. Luckily, I've got a second toilet I can
go to.

Speaker 1 (15:33):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's well, it sounds to me. I
I I got myself confused listening listen to it. So
when the when the water was flushed from the closet
to the bowl, that part went fine. The flapper opened up,
the flapper closed, the water was coming out of the

(15:55):
fill valve. It was going in the overflow. But there
the the the float itself was it wasn't released up
to engage the whole. I don't know exactly why else
that wouldn't be filling up.

Speaker 5 (16:13):
So I'm just thinking there's two valves, one for the overflow.
And then one for the tank that work in conjunction
with each other, because really just the one valve.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
I mean, well, you got the they were running concert
unless there would be a blockage. There's is it the
single one where the flow goes up and down on
the stanchion of the ballcock right right? Okay, So the
inside that valve, which is actually I think that's that's

(16:49):
connected for the overflow just above that there is a
rubber washer. It's a diaphragm unless that's jammed up a
port inside that valve. There's only one valve. Okay, okay,
there is only one valve. Have you tried it a
couple of times since and it's still doing that.

Speaker 5 (17:07):
This happened eleven o'clock at night that we were going
to fall with it.

Speaker 1 (17:11):
Okay. Well, I'm just curious whether that is shutting off properly,
if it's filling properly now, I mean, if there was
some impediment that could have got in there and clogged
that temporarily, and you know, that refill valve or the
overflow valve is just going in and doing a little

(17:34):
of the refill in the tank and the rest of
the valve is filling from the base of the valve.
But there is only one valve, and it is weird
that one would be. Well, yeah, that's why I'm saying.
And I was also saying, it is kind of weird
that one part of the valve's work and the other
part isn't. But as I think of the structure of
it on that ballcock, it's it's it's probably a fluid

(17:59):
master for hundred. If it's gray, it's one hundred. If
it's brown. You you can you can literally on the
older ones, on the two hundreds, you can shut off
the water, flush the water, and you can twist the
top of that valve. You take that whole half of
that valve off, which will expose that rubber diaphragm. And

(18:24):
I wonder if that just got sideways or you know,
ped part of it broke off or something along those lines.
I don't know what else would clog it up, to
be honest.

Speaker 5 (18:34):
Yeah, that what threw me is that the water was
coming out of that tube into the overflow, but the
tank was not selling yeah, and the float the float
wasn't coming up.

Speaker 1 (18:45):
Yeah. Yeah, how do.

Speaker 5 (18:49):
You take that valve apart? Because I don't see any
screws or anything.

Speaker 1 (18:52):
There is no screws. It's a It depends on what
bottle year it is, of course. But the valved cell. Again,
if you turn off the water and you flush, you know,
get the water out of the tank and then you
you can literally take that riser part that has the

(19:13):
float on it and twist it. It's about a quarter
turn and that whole that whole valve will come apart
right there. It's just a twist lock mechanism. And there
should be a diaphragm there and that that may be
clogging it up, but still sounds like the real problem
is the float's getting stuck. All right. We'll continue at

(19:36):
home with Gary Sullivan's.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
Start a project and don't know how to finish it

We've talked about roller rock in the past and we're
talking about it again. The one thing I see, and
if I was just talking to a buddy about this

(22:51):
the other day, there's a couple of things in our
city in terms of commercial services, concrete coatings, bathrooms, roofing,
and waterproofing. It's like everybody in the world must have
these problems, and we got the man here to help us.
Peter Dice from Dice Coatings, Welcome aboard. You're at home

(23:13):
with Gary Salvin Beater.

Speaker 6 (23:16):
Good morning Gary. How are you doing?

Speaker 1 (23:17):
I'm just living a dream. How about you?

Speaker 6 (23:21):
Same same thing? Thank you.

Speaker 1 (23:25):
Well, here we go. I keep getting notices. I want
to talk about the tracks safe with color additives. But
before we get going, we've had a couple discussions already
about roller rock and doing different garage floors and things,
and I was telling people there's so much out there,
and then I'll let you tell me about you know,

(23:48):
how to resolve that. We talked about some inexpensive I
used to complain about inexpensive epoxy coatings, do it yourself things,
minimum maybe maximum lifespan, and that i've seen is four
to five years. And I've talked to you about your
industrial strength Epoxy's a little different story. And then we
talk about roller rocks. Then I see start seeing ads

(24:12):
about people that are coming in and putting polyurea coatings
on what's what I know, the science behind coatings for
concrete have been dramatic and have really opened up the
the playbook on what we can do to our garage floors,

(24:32):
patio floors, laundry room floors. Tell me what roller rock
is and I know it's a great product. But why
it's a great product.

Speaker 6 (24:42):
Well, roller rock is a stone coating and it comes
in a bunch of different colors. But the whole idea
there is if you have a surface that is drab
or maybe has been repaired before, it's got some patches.
Patches never look the same, you're going to have to
cover that with something, and ideally you want something with

(25:05):
some body. So the whole idea behind roller rock is
hence the name roller rock. It's a stone coating. You're
buying it all with a roller, but once you put
it on, it covers all of the repairs that you
may have done. It'll cover any airline tracks. It'll offer
a very attractive, very uniformly textured surface that has visual highlights.

(25:34):
And it's a very slip resistant surface too, so it
basically hides everything. It gives you very uniform, very attractive
surface in basically fifteen different colors, and once it's down.
It's very very durable, So it's going to stand up

(25:54):
to foot traffic, it's going to stand up to your
car tires if you happen to be parking on it.
It'll stand up to shoveling in the winter. But basically,
it creates a whole new surface that you're not just
painting it, because a lot of times, if you have
an old surface and you're putting on a thin, thin

(26:14):
coating like a paint, like a portion and floor paint,
anything that's there or any texture or any repair could
still transmit through visually and you're going to see it
and it's just going to look like an old concrete
surface that you're painted. So the whole idea behind roller
rock is you're resurfacing rather than painting, and you're getting
a very very effective slip resistant surface as well. So

(26:37):
you've got the safety aspect, the beauty aspect, and you
just stand there and you roll it on. It's as
easy as painting, but it's a lot more durable than paint.

Speaker 1 (26:46):
Now you've designed this product for do it yourselfers and professionals.

Speaker 6 (26:51):
Correct, yes, yes, because you know we literally have. You know,
there are very many contractors professionals that we work with
who who offer this as part of their business and
they install this and they'll completely renew you know, your
surroundings and they will roll this on. But you know,

(27:13):
they will ensure that the surface is good and clean
prior to application. You know, they'll go through the steps
and they'll you know, obviously do it for you. Not
everyone wants to install it, and that's where the pros
come in, and they like working with it because the
effects are great, they're long lasting. They don't need to
you know, come back and repair it or anything like that.

(27:33):
It's very very durable. It stands up to the elements
and it's just an easy thing that they add to
their business package.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
So when you say long lasting, were you throwing that
number at? I mean, how long could a homeowner doing
the project following your directions? How long should last on
a garage floor, say, which is probably the toughest area.

Speaker 6 (27:57):
Right, Yeah, Well, basically it can last you know, a
good good number of years. I'm talking five, between five
and ten years. But the important thing is that you
need to ensure that when you are applying the product,
you just want to make sure that the surface is
clean so that when you apply the coating. It's primerless

(28:20):
by the way, so you don't need to put a
primer on first. Yeah, you just put this on two
good solid coats. It's stone, so it has a lot
of compact, compacting strength, and you know, basically, you know,
you put this on and you know it stands up

(28:42):
to the elements. It stands up to freezing temperatures, it
stands up to UV, so it can be in a
hot climate, it can be in a cold climate. And
it just is stone that compacts very tightly together and
you are sealing it at the end. We have a
number of seilers that you can use. But it basically
is a very very water repellent, very durable, very stain

(29:06):
repellent surface that if you slip and fall on this swell,
I don't know, I think I'd be very very surprised.

Speaker 1 (29:14):
Yeah, yeah, no, it does definitely have good traction. Folks.
You can use this interior or exterior. And I know
the other thing is, you know, people always want to
know how long it's gonna last and what's it going
to cost, And really, when you look at the cost
of the roller rock, I wouldn't say it's any more

(29:35):
expensive money than a good quality gallon of paint, and
it's certainly gonna outperform it because it is a coating.
The thickness of the coating itself, so you can do
a garage or even a laundry room floor relatively inexpensively.

Speaker 6 (29:53):
You definitely can, And depending on the surface, we have
different sealers that you can use. So if you're using
the in your garage, you would use our garage and
driveway ceiling, which is especially made to repel any oil
or any kinds of stains that might happen in a garage.
If you're going outdoors, you would just use our Ultra clearcoat,

(30:16):
which is fantastic. But the key is that regardless of
the weather, regardless of the season, it's going to perform
through all of that, it's going to keep looking great.
It's a new layer that you're applying, but you're doing
it with a roller from a standing position. It's very easy,
it's very fast. It dries generally outdoors within an hour max.

(30:41):
But usually within roughly half an hour it's dry, and
then you just roll on a second coat and leave
it alone till the following day, and that's when you
seal it with the ceiler that you would use. Coverage
is excellent. It covers a good area, covers between eighty
and one hundred square feet per gallon, and that's putting
down a very you know, very very good solid coat

(31:05):
on that surface that hides anything that was there before.

Speaker 1 (31:08):
Now, how often should you seal it with like the
garage driveway ceiler.

Speaker 6 (31:15):
The seiler generally we suggest, you know, maybe every two years.
But honestly, once it's on and and that that layered
effect of what you've got there is there, it's going
to last. But we would say just to keep it
looking totally pretty, keep it looking brand new and clean

(31:35):
all the time. Maybe every couple of years, every two
three years, put another coat.

Speaker 1 (31:39):
Of the yet to it.

Speaker 5 (31:41):
Then it has a.

Speaker 6 (31:44):
Little bit of achine, but not an insane amount of
machine because you don't want a surface that looks like plastic, right,
so exactly exactly something you know, so that so that
the stone character is there, and uh, that way you
get you know, you get all of it, you get,
you get the beauty of the stone, you get you know, uh,

(32:05):
you know, not a shine where the sun is bouncing
off and blinding you. It needs to be something that
is just a nice fit. It's great for your patio,
it's fantastic for your pool deck, great for your porch
and steps, you know, make those steps you know, safer
to go up and down on. Uh, you know when
it's been raining or whatnot. It's it's just it packs

(32:25):
a lot of value in one very easy to apply punch.

Speaker 1 (32:29):
Okay, we're talking about a product called roller rock. It's
a rollable stone coating by Dice Coatings, and I guess
you can use it inside. Now. It's got so many
incredible reasons to use that, and you can put it
on as a do it yourself or you can maybe
hire a painter to do it. But what is the

(32:51):
prep work to apply the roller rock? And again, folks,
that's a self priming formula. Is it just soap and
water getting into grinding or acids? Just walk me through
the prep work.

Speaker 5 (33:05):
Yep.

Speaker 6 (33:05):
So basically, the best possible thing you can use outdoors
is a pressure washer. Just use a pressure washer, power
washer if you call it that. But basically, you want
to clean that surface. You want to blast the dirt
out of the pores of that concrete. And once you've

(33:26):
done that, you've really opened it. Up and you you know,
you're basically saying, okay, this is going to allow the
formula to to penetrate and lock into that surface. So
once you've done that, that's it's It's very easy. Just
pressure wash, get a clean let it dry for an hour,
apply the material, and literally, if you do your job

(33:50):
on you know, you start it on a Saturday morning,
By Sunday morning you're installing or rather applying the clear
seiler because it requires twenty four hour secure for the
following day, you seal it and the job is done.
So if you're doing it on let's say a garage
floor or a very smooth, power trowled concrete, you may

(34:13):
want to actually do an etch. We have an extra
cleaner which is extremely effective, or you can do it
the old fashioned way with a mix of you know,
two to one or three to one myriadic acid with water.
It's been done forever. But basically the idea there is

(34:34):
just to add a little bit of abrasion. Yeah yeah,
open up the pores, rough it up a little bit
so it's not quite so smooth. That gives you something
called mechanical adhesion where you're not just uh, you know,
waiting for the formula and the chemistry to do it.
You actually have something that that coating, you know, can
lock onto and grab.

Speaker 1 (34:54):
Yep, yep, and a good time. Use a high power
pressure washing instead of a little wimpy one too. How
about recoding. Once it's been coded ten years, it starts
maybe not failing, but just getting a little tired. Can
you go right over the top with minimal preparation, just
good and clean.

Speaker 6 (35:14):
Absolutely all you need to do is give it a
quick pressure wash at that point. You don't need a
lot of pressure because you're not opening up at that point,
right We're just getting just sort of big exactly. And
then you just let it dry for an hour, apply
any any new color you want over top, or if
by some chance you are interested in a different coating,

(35:36):
a stone coating from our line and you want to
go over that, feel free. Because everything is made to
be compatible, and everything is made to be recoadable by

If you'd like to ask a question regarding your you
are welcome to do so. Danny won't answer the phone,
He'll get the information from you and then you and
I'll chat. It's eight hundred eight two three eight two
five five before we talked to Peter Disch and I
thank him for his time. Today we had a conversation

(40:19):
with a fellow whose toilet was causing him some fits
in the middle of the night. Kind of like to
go over it because I don't know if I really
explain it real well. I was a little confused at
first and went online and just kind of start checking things.
I did check all the boxes, but I thought i'd
condense them and kind of go through that again. So

(40:44):
when the toilet is flushed, you have the little phil valve.
That's the little hoes that goes the overflow to which
helps put water back in the bowl after the initial flush. Okay,
that's one part of the phil valve's job. The other

(41:04):
part of the pill valve's job is to put water
in the closet for the next flush. He was asking
me if there's two valves. No, there's one valve, like
I said, And I was even talking about the fluid
Master two hundred and the fluid Master four hundred, which
is what he had. He had a phill valve and

(41:26):
it had the float going up and down, and his
question was legit, And the more we talked, I think
the more I was confusing myself. They float wasn't going,
it wasn't releasing. I think he said that or we
figured that out going up and down that valve. So

(41:48):
he was like, why is it coming out of the
fill and it's not filling up the closet. Well, there's
a couple things that and that it was or it is.
It's either in the valve or it's on the float,
and we covered both of those, and so number one,
it wouldn't be this, but maybe that float the height

(42:09):
was changed and it's you know, set too high, and
that's you know, that's not going to fill the tank.
It's not going to engage to fill the tank. The
valve itself could be faulty, worn, stuck, allowing the water

(42:29):
to run continuously and all the water is going down
the fill valve. So that's a possibility the float is
stuck or disconnected. I still think that's what it was.
Maybe it's actually rubbing on the back of the closet
inside the toilet. So you got to make sure that
that float is able to be moved freely, and it's

(42:52):
properly attached, which we talked about. And then the last
one was debris in the valve inside a valve certainly
can prevent it from functioning properly. You can shut off
the water. This is the last thing we talked about.
You shut off the water, remove the top of the valve.

(43:12):
Remember I said, just a quarter turn and it'll literally disconnect.
You'll see the diaphragm down in below. Make sure there's
no impediments in there, making sure the diaphragm is not torn.
And so those are that is the bucket list to check.
You want to check each of those buckets. And I

(43:33):
think we did talk about it, but I don't think
we talked about it in a real concise way. So
you know, you can certainly turn off the water supply,
remove the tank lid, flush the toilet, hold the handle down,
get as much water out as possible, and then inspect
the float and the fill valve. And again with the
newer ones like the fluid Master Ballcock four hundred, they're

(43:54):
easily replaced compared to the old Mansfield us Phill valves.
You turn off that water and it's a matter of
you know, disconnecting the supply line. Which is not much
more than a hose anymore. And then ay taking the
nut off and just pull the whole phill valvealve and

(44:16):
replacing it. So just kind of wanted to go over that.
All right, We got another hour to go taking your calls.
