(00:31):
Well, it's the weekend. Welcomeat Home with Gary Salvin taking it through
another weekend of well home chores andrepairs, maybe planning a bigger project.
We can talk about it all.Our number is eight hundred eight two three
eight two five five. And bythe way, those lines are open,
(00:53):
So if you've been trying to getthrough today while we've been chatting with different
folks, now is a good timeagain. It's eight hundred eight two three
eight two five five. Talked alittle bit today about insulation and ventilation.
We didn't really get any calls onthat, and I'm really surprised. There
are a couple of seems like wintertime projects that this time of year is
(01:19):
really the best time to do them. And that includes the whole ventilation of
our attics, the insulation of ourhomes. You know, they're crazy busy
when it's cold out. Insulation workswhen it's warm out. Also ventilation it
works when it's cold out, reallyimportant when it's warm out. So really
(01:42):
this is the time of the yearto learn a little bit about that,
make a decision and maybe execute theplan to get some insulation added to your
home or the joie pockets down inthe basement rather than just stuffing fiberglass in
there, get somebody out there tofoam them. They'll do a much better
(02:07):
job for you. And then theother thing this time of year, which
seems like a fall project is chimneyrepair. Had a couple of calls yesterday
about chimneys at leak and yeah, this is the repair season. You know,
in the wintertime they're busy emergencies cleaningchimneys, but actual repair they have
(02:32):
a tendency to show up more inthe springtime anyway, the problems and this
is a great time to get themrepaired. So we happy to talk about
that too. You got the phonenumber, and we're gonna chat with a
few people here and Tim's gonna kickus off for this hour and Tim welcome.
(02:53):
Hey. Thanks, Gary, reallyappreciate the call. I learned so
much. It's part of my Saturdayand Sunday morning routine when not on my
way to church. But this morningI had another thing I needed to do
and I got to listen to you. I recently built a home and I
have a lot of treated lumber andsmother lumber and things like that left over
(03:14):
that I have a big pile madeup of and I've got I've had it
covered since last last summer. ButI want to build an outside. I
build a sidewalk that goes from mydriveway to the porch. I've never done
anything like that. Can I usethat lumber? And just I mean,
(03:34):
I know, I don't know reallywhere to start. Do I put it
down? Do I put something onthe ground before I put the lumber down,
and then just start building the runsup through the How do I go
about doing that? Yeah, well, you're going to need a base of
gravel to begin with, so you'regoing to have to remove the turf.
There's different kinds of products, butI mean, if you're thinking about using
(03:59):
like a concrete mixed with the rocks, you're you're gonna wanna get that,
you know, preferably four inches totalwith the lease. So you're gonna have
a couple of inches of gravel,a couple inches of concrete, or you
could use an inch or so ofgravel and four inches of concrete. And
so you're gonna remove the grass,You're gonna remove some of You're gonna do
(04:23):
some excavation to get that bed downso it's not sticking up beyond the rest
of the soil level. So you'regonna have to dig down something, and
then you're gonna frame out how thatsidewalk's gonna go. And that's what I'm
assuming you're gonna do with that wood. Yes, sir, it's gonna be.
(04:44):
It's gonna be pretty straight. It'sjust gonna be. What I'd like
to do is just have it comestraight from the from the front porch and
then just kind of make a littlel into the driveway to where right now
I don't have anywhere for any peopleto walk, you know, when they
come to the new ouse. Mmhmmmm. So again, you you can
(05:04):
take some lawnmarking spray paint if youwant, or you could mark it out
with some spring, some string,or a hose. I've seen people use
hose. You want to map outexactly where that sidewalks going, right,
then you're gonna dig down to youknow, the depth that you're gonna have
(05:27):
to dig down to and go alongthat path, put the forms together,
and then for the base, youjust you know, get a tamper peck
that soil down as tight as youcan get the gravel down on there,
and then you can use different typesof concrete. Some people will use,
(05:54):
you know, like a mesh ora screening. Some people will use fibrated
concrete which kind of just holds ittogether. I'm guessing you're mixing it yourself.
If you're not, you can certainlyorder that and get ready to pour
and flatten and again you'll put yourexpansion cuts in there so that you know,
(06:15):
they always say concrete is guaranteed,it's guaranteed to break, So you
know about every three feet you'll putthat that cut in there so that it
can crack along that cut, thatmargin cut. And that's pretty much the
basics of it. But you know, knowing where it's gonna go, making
(06:36):
sure you know everything that's got tohave a good solid base. I've seen
people pour during housing booms. They'llthey'll level the grass, they'll dig it
down and up pour concrete around topof a clay clay mud. But I
wouldn't do that, but I've seenit done. But you get a couple
(06:57):
two inches of gravel bit down thereand two or three inches of concrete on
there, and you should be uh, you should have a wonderful sidewalk.
All right, Thank you, Iappreciate the show, and thanks for everything
you do for us. All right, very good, thanks, take care,
bye bye. And I know I'mprobably overkilling it a little bit always,
do you know when I'm talking aboutthe amount of concrete. But I
(07:25):
would say, at the little atthe minimum two inches of gravel two inches
of concrete, so you're gonna digdown at least four inches. It's probably
adequate. All right. Eight hundredeight two three eight two five five.
That's the number. Grab a line, Carmen. Welcome. My My question
is have you seen or can yougive me the name of a I saw
(07:48):
it. I don't know exactly, but one of those videos, and it's
a flour dealer but it's like anepoxy. And he was even standing in
it as he spread it out,and it's shelf leveling and it's it's good
(08:09):
to me. What are you ceiling? What are you ceiling? Carmen?
The floor a concrete floor? Isit a laundry room or a garage or
what is well? It looked likea bedroom to me, okay. And
and what are you asking me isif I know the name of a product
(08:30):
that's an epoxy that you can spreadon. Yes, that's what I thought
I saw. Yeah, well,Carmen, I'll tell you what. I
haven't saw an epoxy where they couldspray it or spread it onto a concrete
and literally stand on it or init. There's a you know there there's
(08:50):
a million different products out there, and I could sit here and tell you
all about different products, but asyou describe what you saw, I can't
say I recognize what that product is. There's a lot of good epoxy floor
paints that require a mixture of apart A and part B. There are
(09:13):
some non epoxy floor paints, whichyou know, again, I don't know
if you're going to do that projector you're gonna have somebody do it.
If you're gonna have somebody do it, there is a plethora of different companies
out there that put a POxy garagefloor paints down that you can also use
(09:33):
inside the house. So I'm notfamiliar with which one you're you're speaking of,
and I wish I could to helpyou. I just don't know the
name of it. All Right,we'll take a quick break and then we
got some calls coming in. We'llchat to them, and you you're at

(12:48):
go twenty minutes after the top ofthe are you know, I was just
thinking when I was talking to thefella. We were talking about building a
sidewalk, and sometimes we have timerestraints and we make things sound really simple.
There's certainly a technique of putting thatconcrete down, and again I'd like
(13:09):
to really focus on that base andthen you get into just floating that concrete
out level and uh, that's reallywhere the wood he was talking about in
frame it. It becomes so keythat that's level because that's going to be
the height of your concrete if you'refollowing me. So, yeah, I
(13:31):
know we went through that fast.Don't just got start building to do a
little bit more research on that, but in general, that's basically what you're
going to do. And then thebroom finish on top of that. All
right, let's go to h LukeLuke welcome. Okay, So we have
(13:52):
we have a basement, first floor, second floor. When we flashed,
it doesn't happen all the time.We slash the first floor toilet, you'll
hear like a blood blood, bloodblock in the line. About it's about
twenty seconds delay after you flush atoilet. Then like coming out of the
like the almost the lines in thebasement, you'll hear like a I can't
create this recreate sound. It's likeblug blood brook air in the lines.
(14:16):
I just don't know what it isexactly its problem, but I just don't
know if it will be one.Yeah. So the flush is it removes
all of the waste and everything. There's no problem there. You just hear
like a gurgle or a bubble orsomething along those lines. Pretty close to
bubble. Yeah. Yeah. Myguess is what's happening is it takes air
(14:43):
as much as it takes water tocomplete a flush. So the stacks on
the on the roof is and there'spipes and it's tied to the toilet and
it's called your vent. And ifthere's anything in that vent or in that
(15:05):
vent pipe, that could be disturbingthe airflow. So it goes to other
areas to get that air. Okay, okay. And an analogy of that
would be as you know when youhave a gas can and you don't open
the vent and how it kind ofjust gurgles. I do. My guess
(15:28):
is that's what's going on. Okay, Okay, So really just go on
a roof and check that vent andjust make sure there's nothing blocking that.
Yeah, there could be sticks downWe've had a lot of wind. I've
got a lot of you know, little twigs with the leaves, the new
leaves where they're still tender. Anyof that could be disrupting a little flow
(15:50):
of the air and that very wellmaybe it and sometimes I can it just
starts slashed like it's kind of hadgot some air or something. Actually,
it doesn't get every time, right, been sitting for the longest period of
time or while, then it doesit that first time you flush in the
morning. It makes that sound.Yeah, so all right, well,
(16:11):
yeah, I'm guessing that is sometimespeople even here gurgling the bathtub dream,
you know, you just hear thatgurgle. So it depends how the system
is set up. But that wouldbe that would be my first look.
See would be in the vent pipes. See if there's any obstruction and you
(16:32):
might have to run a snake downthere or something like that. In the
pool, you know, if yousee a debris you can pull it up.
Yeah, because it also like anseour bathroom sat grabs. It's beginning
to hold. I put some grantedyesterday, but it's it's not draining as
fast either. That does probably trynot connected to each other. That's probably
just a little bit of debris orstyle. I'm thinking that's a combination of
(16:55):
you know, hair and different things. Mine does it about every four months.
It's yourself a little zip it strip. It's about three feet long.
It's got a little prong sticking up. You can feed it right down between
the stopper and the drain edge, wiggle it around, shake it around,
you pull up just it doesn't takemuch. It's amazing how little it takes.
(17:17):
You'll knock some free, you'll pullsome up and that should start draining
again. Well out of work, all right, very good, thanks Lly,
take care. Yeah, And there'scertainly when you get into things like
that, it can there can bemore that's going on again. Whenever you
hear even an king always ask youknow how old the toilet is is.
(17:41):
Sometimes that will be caused by thelittle vent hole at the base of the
toilet has calcified from hard water stains. And using a bottle, a court
bottle of like CLR which was avery mild acid, pouring that in letting
it sit overnight may help. AndI passed out along many times and people
(18:07):
go, yeah, you know,in the morning you flush it through and
Doug gunt it flushed right through becausethat calcium carbonate would just form right around
that little quarter sized hole at thebase of the toilet, which was impeding
enough of that vacuum to cause itto gurgle and to belch water. If
you would all right, we're gonnatake a break. When we come back,
(18:32):
I'm Bill will be up first,Danny do I got another minute.
I'm just having a little figuring outwhat I'm doing here. Okay, lessen
a minute. Okay, so letme not go to a phone call here
and just continue a discussion with that, and then we will take a break
and get some more phone calls. But again the CLR in the toilet for
(18:53):
decalcifying the toilet. Yes, checkinga stack, especially if you have of
a lot of gurgling or belching ofwater. Again, this time of year
very prone to that. I don'tknow where your front yard looks like.
We got these little six inch twigswith leaves sticking on them, and they're
definitely plugging up or could be pluggingup that stack. And don't get a
(19:17):
garden hose and just blasted with water. You don't know where that water's gonna
end up. So I would alwaysrecommend using a using a snake and running
it down. There shouldn't be atotal clog, just something you can hook
and pull up. All right,we'll take that break. Bill, You'll
be up first, and then Lily, and as we continue. You're at

home improvement bill. Welcome, Hi, thanks for taking the call. Gary
Bet. First of all, I'vegot molds. I've had a slow leak
in the utility room for five years. Oh boy, thank god. It
(23:11):
was vinyl linoleum underneath and it didn'tgo down into the cral space. But
I do have mold on the baseboardis expanded about twice its normal size,
and then it's went up the wallabout one foot okay, And I'm just
(23:32):
calling for hints as to get howrid of that mold rather than going to
the mitigation company that looked at itand says, yeah, we can get
rid of it for two thousand dollars. I'm surprised it was that for that
size because usually I'll tell people,if you got an area that's more than
ten ten square feet, you know, it might be something that you want
(23:56):
to, you know, have amitigation up me tackle. But if you've
got it just a strip above ayou know, dry wall that's a foot,
probably can tackle that yourself. It'sabout a squirt. Yeah. So
the only thing we don't know, and I'm just throwing this out at you,
(24:19):
but you've had the problem going onfor five years, so if it
was going to cause any problems, you probably would have experienced it by now
is how much water got between thewall. You know that you can't see.
So so that's why I bring thatup. So to get rid of
it. There's a lot of peopletell you bleach and water bill, but
(24:42):
that's really not what I would recommend. Mold is if you do bleach in
water, you'll bleach out that mold. You won't really see it, but
you won't really kill it. Andmold wall also know that it's being attacked
and it'll be reproducing more mold spores. So that's why. That's why you
(25:07):
wouldn't want to use a bleach compound. But there's a lot of products out
there, and the one that actuallyis a sponsor of the show I talked
about more often because I'm more familiarwith it. It's called Wet and Forget,
and it's a disinfectant and mold killerand a mold killer. Yes,
(25:30):
it totally kills the mold and youliterally just spray it on and it will
kill the mold. There's no scrubbinginvolved, so it's very very safe to
use, and you can go onlineand check it out feel comfortable about it.
It's uh Wet Andforget dot com.Mostly I'm using Wet and Forget bolt
(25:57):
the outdoor and the indoor. Imean not the outdoor. I have it
for this, oh and my birdbath, which is my next question.
But do I use the indoor Wetand Forget for the mold then yes,
you would use the indoor. Andit's labeled as disinfectant and mold remover or
disinfectant and mold killer. I forgetthe mold into things, but it's disinfectant's
(26:22):
the first word, and mold remover, mold killer or whatever. Uh and
you just spray that on. Don'tuse the outdoor one and don't use the
shower one. But it's it's definitelythe disinfectant and mold remover. Ooh,
it's a different one than the shower. I've got the shower one. Yeah,
it's different than the shower. Ohokay, so interesting. And then
(26:47):
which one do I use on abird bath for outside that would be safe
for the birds? Hmmm? Orcan I well, well, it'll kill
mold. I'm just thinking, reallyif that's the best product for that.
So Okay, to answer the question, which one would I use? You
(27:08):
would use the exterior but it's goingto take six weeks for it to work,
right, and I don't think youwant to be without the bird bath
for that long. Well no,So, so what I would get is
is an oxygenated bleach, which it'syou know, you'd empty the bird bath
(27:30):
you and it would be safe forthe birds. You would take this oxygenate
bleach, which the chemical name issodium per carbonate. Okay. It's in
a lot of deck cleaners, it'sin a little masonry cleaners. It's in
for laundry, which is oxyclean that'san oxygenated bleach. That might even work
(27:51):
for a bird bath. There's differentgrades of it. But if you've got
any oxyclean, you just use thatoxy clean. Yeah, okay, you
know it's it's a powdery mixed withwater. What the surface lights stand for
about ten minutes and then a scrubbrush and just scrub it and rinse it
and you're done. I'll do it. Okay. Well, I appreciate it.
(28:14):
Gary. I enjoy your program andI've been walking listening to you for
years and years. Very good.Appreciate it, Thank you, take care,
Thank you all right, and uhLilyane welcome. Yeah, hello,
hello, hey it stopped raining, thank goodness. Yeah, I'm I'm calling
(28:37):
about these little I don't know ifthey're fruit flies or what kind of buzzs
they are. They seem to becoming out of the apples I've been buying
from the grocery store. Their fruitflies and fruit flies. Okay, all
they get room. They're they're awfultough. They end up flying in the
(28:59):
in the your food. Yeah.Yeah. So what you can do is
just get a little shallow dish ora little saucer or a little tiny bowl,
get some cider vinegar. Oh,and put the cider vinegar in a
bowl and maybe two drops of aliquid soap soap and maybe a couple of
(29:27):
drops of red food coloring. They'reattracted to red, and then you know,
put a little water in there andjust set the bowl on the counter
and they'll gravitate right to that bowl. And they won't be able to get
out of the bowl because of theliquid soap that's on there, but they'll
(29:49):
smell the apple cider, so they'llgo to it. They'll see the red
coloring, they'll go to it,and then you you know, the drops
of soap keep them from flying awayfor other folks. Listen, if you
don't want to make that mixture.I know. I always talk about rescue
insect traps. They've got one. It's red, it looks like an apple,
(30:14):
and it's already pre loaded and they'llgo right to it. There's all
holes at the top of the apple. So yeah, yeah, that's what
they are, their fruit flies. So that's what's causing the problem. Thanks
Lilliana, I appreciate it. Let'sgo to Bruce. Bruce welcome. Yeah,
Gary, I've got a question abouthow much pressure it takes to run
a valve in a toilet. Mysituation is it's off grid and my water
(30:41):
pressure comes from a three hundred gallontank which is elevated about eight feet,
and before before I start plumbing thingsand whatnot, I'm looking for any suggestions
or input. Well, you gotme. I've never been asked this question.
It's only been thirty eight years though, so you know, well,
(31:03):
no one seems to have the answer. Yeah, I really don't know.
I'm I'm going to I guess theonly thing I can reference to is what
would be the lowest accommodating water pressurein a house, And usually the lowest
(31:25):
comminating pressure in a house is fortyPSI well, and I don't think I
have that. Yeah, well, you're you're also not going to need that
to flush the toilet. That's goingto be for a house, So that
means it's got to take a showerand everything else. So you know,
anything below that, though, I'dbe guessing. I really don't know.
(31:45):
Do you know how much pressure youwould have? No, No, I
don't, I don't. I'm surethere's a calculation to figure it out,
you know, based on the Yeah, yeah, you could google it.
I think you just need the sizeof the of the pipe and the amount
(32:07):
that you are the size of thepipe in the length of the pipe probably
your two most important part of thataction. I wonder if there's different valves
that require less or more pressure.I don't know one that needs at least
pressure. Yeah. Well, I'mjust kind of even thinking this thing through.
(32:30):
Again, never been asked this question. But if you you have the
tank on the toilet, right, well, yes, yes, I do
so when you flush and then therewas an elevated tank. Okay, but
this thing might be easier than thenwe're making it out to be. So
(32:52):
the flush is actually done by theamount you're releasing from the tank into the
toilet. Yes, yes, Sothe question is how long would the reservoir
take to refill, right, orif if there'd be even be enough pressure
to push that valve open to fillit. That's the question. That's the
(33:16):
question. The flush will take careof itself is just a matter of yeah,
and again I don't know, Idon't know, I do not know,
and I don't figure. I figuredI bounce it off you, so
so I'm intrigued by it. Iwill work hard trying to find an answer.
So I think you would need thesize of the pipe, and and
(33:38):
and volume, so you know you'regoing to have volume and pressure are two
different things. So the size ofthe pipe is critical, the length of
the pipe is critical. And thenthe other thing is do ball cocks which
is the valve inside the toilet?Yeah? What is the minimal pressure they
(34:01):
can have? So you might goto fluid Master and see if that's listed
on their specs on their website.Okay, okay, I don't know there's
a way. I just don't havetime and not smart enough to think of
it as I sit here. Well, it beats flushing it with a bucket
(34:22):
every time. Yep, I hearyou, I hear you. All Right,
we'll talk again. Thanks. That'sa good one. Hey, let's
take a little break. We'll comeback, take a couple questions, and

That's ries cue, all right,Just doing some very quick look see on
ballcocks valves and uh so, justa little information with that very much not
very much time spent on it.Many fill valves and ballcocks need twenty PSI
(37:27):
to operate, so half of whata house would be. You say,
houses water pressure forty to sixty isa really good range. If you got
copper, it can tolerate eighty, but forty to sixty is normal, and
to get a water into a toileton a ballcock would be twenty PSI all
(37:55):
right, let's go to Bill.Bill welcome. Hey, Hey, before
I go to my questions, justa little bit that because I went round
and around with my toilet bowl forthe last couple of weeks and Fluid Master,
I don't know if this will helpthat guy. They sell a flap
of valve that's got a little dialon it that'll let the flap will go
(38:19):
down slow fast. Yeah, Idon't know if that would help him or
not. No, because he's havingHe's not having problems with the flush mechanism
because the flush originates with the waterthat's already in the closet going down to
the bowl, and that's not theproblem. The problem is I will fill,
(38:44):
so to fill that closet back up, he's having to take a bucket
of water and pour it in there. Okay, But anyway for my question,
all right, Hey, I'm goingand I think I called you,
and I'm sorry if I'm repeating it, But light bulbs, these fluorescent light
bulbs, are they going to becomehas beens? I mean, like the
big problem is what the heck doyou do with the old ones? You
(39:09):
can recycle them. You can recyclethem, and you can also I know
in Mike County they have hazard's materialdays during the month where you can bring
in like antifreeze, fluorescent bulbs, oil based paints. I think they even
(39:32):
do some computers and things like that. So yeah, I mean it,
back in the day when they weresold the fluorescent light bulb package told you
or asked you not to dispose itin the landfill, So that would be
the proper disposal of a fluorescent bulb, because I got about a dozen of
(39:57):
bulbs that are burnt out, andI got at least that many fixtures throughout
my house. You know, insome places, you know, everybody says
you could take it here, andyou could take it there, like lows
and home deepoems and hardware stores, and then you call them up, there's
nobody that has a clue what theheck you're talking about. Yeah, well,
(40:17):
I know some of them do have. But I wouldn't sit here and
say that all the walmarts are goingto have a recycle bind. I know
some of them do, and Iknow a lot of them even had recycling
for phones and things like that.So some of them do. But call
(40:38):
your county or city or municipality thatwe're in. Somebody else told me that.
Okay, well that I think that'sthe answer. I think that's where
you're going to recycle them. Hangup, Okay, I think that's the
answer. We tried. That isthe answer. All right, Paul,
(41:01):
welcome, Yeah, good morning,Garanting. I wasn't listening yesterday, but
I heard this morning that you hadmentioned you had been talking about front doors,
and I just want to tell youwhat I did with mine, was
I took it to a body shop. Yeah, you want to if you
(41:22):
want a single color door, youtake it to a body shop. And
there's a clearcoat system that DuPont hasthat you can get anything from flat to
glossy, you know, any anyany gloss level in between. And it's
been beautiful for you know, twoand a half years now or so.
(41:43):
And it gets pulled sun in themorning. My old door, before I
got it painted it, you know, a year, it looked terrible.
Yeah. So is this a metaldoor or is this a fiberglass door or
a wood door. This is afiberglass door. It's a fiber well you're
the first one to ever bring itup on the fiberglass door, so that's
(42:05):
that's new. I totally agree withyou, and I'll go back to the
metal doors in all. Honestly, metal doors had a heck of a time
keeping paint on and especially when theywere taking away the gray oxide primers or
the red oxide primers, real heavyduty red. If you painted a metal
(42:28):
door with that and then used agoodie nam on it, it would stay.
Anything less than that or multiple coats, it wouldn't. And yeah,
taking it to a body shop wasgreat for that. I could certainly see
why i'd work on fiberglass. Autopaints go on fiberglass all the time,
so yeah, I'm sure would.I actually have an exterior a curly house
(42:52):
paint on mine, not like atrimming enamel, and it's done pretty good.
So tell me what you hit onthere before and what got you to
take it to an auto shop?Well, I had it was kind of
I'm not sure what was what kindof paint was on it, because it
was done by a craftsman to makeit look like wood grain, you know,
(43:15):
with all the leather and that kindof stuff, right, and then
it had a clear coat of somesort. I don't know if it was
far varnish or regular your thing orwhat, but you know it's it's started
getting real rough and how poly yourthing would in the in the ultra violet.
(43:42):
And I don't know, somebody somebodysaid it and said something about it,
or said something about car paint, you know in the sun, and
you know cars in the sun.Yeah, well that's a that's a great
tip off somebody struggling. You know, they're not going to make it look
wood grain, but if you're lookinga color. Yeah, I haven't in
trouble with putting pain on a fiberglassstore, but I've been there with putting
(44:07):
clearcoats on there. That's a challenge. And if he used like a pot
of your thing instead of a smartI'm sure he did it. Have problem
with it all right, Danny boy, Thank you very much. Great weekend,
busy one for sure, and hopeeverybody had a good time getting some
tips put together for their home projects. And all the moms out there are

very happy Mother's Day. Good LordWelling won't be back next weekend for more
