(00:01):
I hope you have a wonderful MemorialDay weekend and hopefully able to celebrate with
friends and keep in mind the meaningof Memorial Day, which brings me to
one of my projects today. Andlet's get the flag out on the house,
and you know, get a flagholder, flag pole, you can

(00:24):
get kits, and if you're anchoringit into a brick wall, which many
of us have, you want toput the hole for the anchor, hopefully
into the mortar. And to makethat project go a lot easier, a
hammer drill is perfect. If youdon't have a hammer drill, borrow one

(00:50):
or rent one, it is adeal changer. I mean, a regular
drill will sometimes go, but ifyou got really hard mortar and hard brick,
you're going to struggle with it,even with a good masonry bit.
But if you got a hammer gril, bango through like butter. Hey,
get your lead anchor, get alittle silicon in that hole, put the

(01:12):
anchor in, let it dry,go ahead, connect the holder, and
you're in business. So put thaton your list. Maybe we can get
that done this weekend. All right, If you've got a question regarding your
home, I invite you to stepon in whether it's painting or patching or
cleaning. Step on in. It'seight hundred eighty two three A two five

(01:36):
five. All right, let's goto the phones, and Dorothy's gonna lead
us off on this Memorial Day weekend, and Dorothy welcome. Hello. Yes,
I have a question about Latex paint. Okay, I have to get
rid of it. Some people sayjust open them up and let them dry

(01:57):
out. People say, put caddylitter in them. Some of the cans
have never been opened and they gotto be at least three years old.
Okay, well you can donate themtwo Matthew twenty five ministries, habitat restores.
There's there's different places like that thatwill accept it. Maybe just I

(02:23):
know you're in Cleveland. I nameda couple of my hometown places. If
funny you say that because I havethat on my note sheet today on donating
paints. And you're right. Youknow, if you got you know,
three or four inches of paint, you can open up the lind just like
dry out. It'll dry rock cardand you can pitch it in the trash.

(02:43):
Kitty litter will absorb it and it'lldry same way. Pitch it in
the trash. But if you gota half a gollon or three quarters of
a gollon or a whole unopen gollon, those places are happy to have it.
I know Matthew twenty five will blendin create gallons and then a lot
of that paint goes overseas. AndI know at the habitats stores, the

(03:08):
restores, they'll blend or some ofthem will, some will blend, some
will sell their full gallons sell asis, and there's other places too,
I'm sure, but yeah, yeah, definitely do that. That's a that's
a good rainy day project too forfolks listening. I just went through that
my house. I had thirty twogallons of in various stages, pitched,

(03:30):
some donated, some and you knowthey were down there and the colors from
the walls were probably long gone.So yeah, yeah, okay, I'm
gonna go to habitat with the onesthat aren't open. Yep, yep.
I would definitely do that, Thankyou much, you bet, bye bye
if you might wann't even call first. I mean, there's probably six hundred

(03:51):
different restores across the country, andin a lot of cases, you know,
they're all independent to a degree. So we might just double check make
sure they'll take it. But Iknow in my place, in my city,
there's a Matthew twenty five ministries.They'll take anything. I don't think

(04:12):
I think they do take No,I don't think they take solvent based the
solvent based paints, oil based paints. Usually your county city will have several
you know, maybe four six timesa year they'll have drop off points for
quote, hazardous waste materials. Thosetypes of paints are included in that,

(04:34):
and they're usually advertised when they willbe doing that. But Latex paints,
there's definitely some organizations that take takethat, reblend it. And yeah,
so I definitely did clean out thatbasement of garage. Paul, welcome,
Yeah, good morning. I havetwo questions. The first one is I

(04:59):
just redid my front entryway and youknow it's PAVERR bricks with and I put
polymeric sand in and where you've gotto drop off and I've got three of
them. You know, you getthose little spaces where the polymeric sand doesn't
fill in because it just all fallsout the front. Is there anything you
can do about so even when youput the polymeric sand in, does it

(05:26):
stay in there for a little bitand then wash out or there's just nothing
to hold it even in. No, just if it's if you know,
if it's right on a front edge, it just runs right right out.
I mean, so you fill upa third to a half of the of
the space and then the rest lookslike, you know, just the space

(05:46):
between piano keys or something. Yeah. Yeah, not really unless you would
take in where are you starting thepavers the front part or the back part
or the middle or in other words, can we mean I guess, so
is the pavers going over the slabor not? Yes, a little bit.

(06:10):
So if you start the pavers onthe edge, that would be the
edge of the step, correct, right, okay, And there would be
no seam of saying there correct,Uh, no seam if they were over
the edge, so you would havea vertical seam, but we'd have a

(06:32):
long scene. If you start themon the edge, there would be no
long the width. There would beno seam but the crossing. I see
what you're saying. I see whatyou're saying. Right. Well, it
doesn't matter whether they're you know, straight out or across the concrete. The

(06:59):
there's either a small little gap ora longer gap, depending on which direction
they're they're going, So it wouldbe minimized if we didn't have that wide
one, you know, the longergap. But I don't know, you
know, outside of you know, outside of a mortar, you know.
I mean when we talk about polymericsand, we're usually looking at like a

(07:21):
patio or a walkway or something that'snot elevated, so there's something that's kind
of holding those in. So I'dhave to say I'm not familiar with it.
You know. The nice thing aboutpolymeric sand is if you can maybe
put up something to even if itwere like a duct tape or something,

(07:42):
and get the polymeric sand in there, sweep it in and then take the
hose and missed it, and thenremove the duct tape right away or something
using that as a border, becausethat the polymeric sand will harden once it's
wet to a degree, you know, I mean, it's not gonna be
hard like concrete, but it willwill harden up a little bit. Yeah,

(08:03):
And I've tried that in other places. With this, this is a
little weirder because it's got it's gotthe you know, soldiers holding up the
front edge of it and that providesanother gap for things to run in.
Yeah. My second quest it hasto do with that new dice coatings product.

(08:24):
Yes, and you guys were talkingabout last week, right, would
would that work like outside on theapron to your garage? I believe it's
more of an interior product. Butwhen you're talking about the apron and the
garage, we're only talking about asix inch band. Correct. Well,

(08:46):
no, actually, i'm plus forfor for me, it'd be that plus
about six feet of concrete. Iwould say no, but i'd check the
label. I think it's more ofan indoor product. All right, That's
what I'll do. Thanks, allright, very good, Thank you.
Take care. Now in the dishproducts, some one he's talking about is

(09:07):
a new product they introduced. It'san a epoxy. It's an industrial strength
epoxy coating. Use it in industrialwarehouses, and now it's available for residential
residential use. Now if you wantit outside, like on a patio or
an apron of a driveway. Theygot other products and one of those products
is called roller rock. And bythe way, if you'd like to hear

(12:45):
All right, back at it,we go at home with Gary Sullivan.
As we're talking about our home andour landscaping, it's time to bring
in Ron Wilson, our landscaping andyard boy, because I know it's a
busy time for everybody, and Wilsona busy time for you also, I'm
sure it is. I was justcurious in the hardware business after Memorial weekend,
did you see it start to kindof taper off a little bit?

(13:07):
Usually not till about July, rightaround the first right fourth of July's the
last big push, I think, yeah, and then it just kind of
gets into the dog days, andthen you know, you get another uptick
during the fall. But yeah, right now, we'd be real busy,
have no questions about it. AndI finally this spring caught up with what

(13:31):
well, just the basic things toget done, you know, home improvement
or in garden both bully, Yes, how did you do that? I
don't know. I did a lot. I know that this week was a
big week. Dan said, youbrought in the subcontractors. No I didn't.

(13:52):
I I'll tell you what yard workthis year is a lot of work.
Grass is growing like a weed.Well it's so thick and it's looking
good. It looks awesome. Nowlook you you beg for a nice looking
lone. Well, I'm not complaining. We got always do. Now we
got people complaining. So I gotmy long looks best it's they were looking.

(14:13):
I got them all twice a week. Oh, I'm every three days
for me. That's what happens. And even the edging. I got the
sidewalks edge, now I got thedriveway's edge. I got the beds cleaned
up. How do you do thatwith a string trimmer or with a square
spade? Actually neither, you know. I have and I've had it probably
for twenty years. It's an oldTroy built gasoline powered edger. Okay,

(14:39):
it might have another year left thenI'm going battery. Are you the straight
up and down edge or do youdo the Yeah? Straight up and down.
Yeah, right up, straight upand down. But holy cow,
you know before the soil was justreally kind of too wet to even do
that and just kind of clog up. And that's okay, you know,
but you know, you gotta seethe moment. And but I am just

(15:01):
amazed at the thickness of the ofthe turf. It is so dense.
Everywhere you look at people's yards andyou can see where there the wheels cut
the grass. And I started oneday. I was at every highest setting
that mower would go, and youknow, a little bit, you'd cheat

(15:22):
a little bit and maybe just tryto get it back a little I mean,
I didn't really want it four inches. I'll I'll take three. And
now I got it back to theright high. I got everything edge.
It was a big Yahoo party, got the garage cleaned out, got the
power washer out. Man, it'sbeen fun. Oh no, yeah,
did your neighbors know you were gettingthe power washer out? No? Because
I know once you get that out, it's just house. The house.

(15:45):
Everybody wants everybody wants a piece ofthe action. No, Gary wants to
wash. Everybody wants a piece ofthe Gary's got the power washer I wasn't
go by my house and pressure washedmy drive I wasn't the only guy out
there. I saw several people, you know, and you can do that,
you don't We always talk about thewedd and forget yep for driveways.
I'm telling you that's the way togo. Yep, the heck with a

(16:07):
powerwasher. There you go. Buton the end garage floor, yeah,
we had to get the power washeron that. And what and what pressure
setting do you use for concrete?Mine was under It was right at two
thousand and it was a twenty fivedegree nozzle. What what power setting do
we use for a deck? UNothing higher than that? And in fact,

(16:29):
I'd prefer you not to even useit. There you that's the answer
I was looking for. Yeah,a lot of people don't realize when you
have a pressure to your wood andlet's say it's I don't know, ten
years old, and you've done it, okay job of sealing it maybe not
a great job like most people,and you get a pressure. I didn't
see it. Okay, I didn'tsay your name. I just went right

(16:51):
by. You can say no,I'm not going to But if you get
into the twenty four hundred and twentyeight three thousand psi and you're using a
fifteen twenty five degree nozzle. Fifteendegree nozzle you write your name in the
wood, but even a twenty fivedegree what will happen is you'll clean it.
I mean it'll look awesome because thatgray is only down there about a

(17:14):
sixty fourth of an inch, andliterally that pressure washer will shave that wood
two a degree off and it'll looklike it's natural color. The problem is
ron it'll create all this little fuzzand then when it dries out and you
stain it, that little fuzz onthe surface of that wood, that's the

(17:37):
most absorbent part of the wood.So all that fuzz will be a little
darker than the actual board. It'lllook blotchy. So you know two thousand
and under fine twenty five forty degreenozzle. But again, if you just
use like an oxygenated bleach deck cleanerright mixed with water, put it on

(17:59):
the deck, let's sit ten minutes, take a street room edgitate and rinse
off. Then come back with awood brightener. It'll look like a new
deck. And then go ahead andput your semi transparent stain on there.
I don't have to let that drytwo hours if it's a water base,
and you know some places you canstill get the solvent based or the modified
and you might have to wait fortyeight hours. Now, you said sixty

(18:22):
fourth of an inch. You knowit wasn't forty eight well seventy two an
inch? I stand corrected. Allright, my friend, A weekend,
All right, same to you.All right, Scott, you'll be up

(21:51):
three eight two five five. Graba line there wide opening, Scott,
Welcome, Hey Garry, How youdoing that? Yes, sir fine?
Thanks. Uh. I talked toyou a couple of weeks ago about garage
floor coatings, and then last lastweek I arguere uh been with diets about
the die Hard. Yes, sir, uh, I have a two questions

(22:12):
about the die hard. I havea three car three car garage, and
I don't think I can do itall at one time? Would it?
Would it be? Can you likesplit that in half and do one side
if you've got a natural breaking pointin there. In other words, there's
probably some expansion joints that will go, you know, to the depth of

(22:33):
the garage. You should be youcould be able to trim that out where
you could do a block at atime. But let me make this observation
too, the hardest part of thatproject is probably just the prep work.
And the prep work compared to otherepoxy coatings is really easy. But you

(22:56):
just got to make sure all theoils up chewing gum, soiled dirt,
and that's going to take you.If you got three car garage, they'll
take you all day. Right actuallyput probably thirty years old and the sale
of the seal on the floor.I mean, any water comes off the

(23:17):
air conditioning the car or anything likethat, it has to evaporate. It
will not steak into the it won'tabsorb. Okay, okay, you should
not have to there. It'll bean industrial cleaner that you'll have to use,
but you should not have to etchit So in that conversation that we

(23:37):
had with Peter last week, Ithink one of the things I had mentioned
that several times is their website. He's got some really great videos there because
it's it's so important to really knowwhat the direction say and how you're going
to do it. But the videosare really great. I encourage you to
go to that Dice Coatings, that'sd A. I c ch Coadings dot

(24:02):
com. Just take a look athim. But I really think, uh,
there's two ways of doing it.One is just do your prep one
day and then the actual application onceyou get that first code on, I
mean or that code on, uh, you might have to wait for the
next day to put a clear sealer. I just don't use the floor.

(24:23):
If you want to break it downwhere you're just doing half of it,
just find where the seams are andthere's always you know, salt cuts there
and use that as the natural dividingline and and you could you could do
it in two stages. Okay, that sounds like it's gonna be an awesome
product product. Yeah, yeah,I'm real excited about it. I mean,

(24:48):
uh, he's so right, becauseI've spent a lot of time on
this show warning people that you knowwhen you do it, it's not a
forever product. The old stuff.I've used it, and I always thought
you got you know, maybe fivesix years out of and they just wouldn't
really wear off. It were justkind of ugly out. And when we
were talking to Peter right away,he goes like, well, the other

(25:11):
ones they leave tire marks, andHe's so right they do. And he
goes, this is industrial people werein forklifts over and I'm going Bengo.
So yeah, I let me knowwhat you think. How how the project
went? Okay, thank you sir, all right, you bet take care
by bye. All right again thatnumber is eight hundred eight two three eight
two five five. Well, we'vegot the garage floor covered today, we've

(25:34):
got the flag bracket to hold thepole. We got that covered. Were
happy to talk about your project, and again you got the phone number in
Bert Welcome, Good morning Gary.I didn't take my call. You bet.
I have a patio. I havea brick home and the foundation is

(25:55):
old stone. There's a brick patiothat has a concrete foundation underneath in the
uh so, my real problem isthe junction between the brick home and the
patio. There's it's steparate. Youknow, it's settling. It's come away
from the house and there's a crackand it deeps down into the basement.

(26:15):
I've cocked it a number of years, and it doesn't seem to last very
long. I didn't know if therewas a product that could expand and contract
and well they last longer than theye. Yeah, Well go ahead.
Let me ask you a couple ofquestions. So we got a patio.
Is there bricks on top of thepatio, the concrete patio or is it?
Yes? Yes, okay, Sowe got a concrete slab, we

(26:37):
got bricks on top of that. Then it joins up or butts into the
house or to the exterior wall thehouse, and then patio has pulled away
from the house. So there's agap there, correct, Okay, And
where's the crack. That's what I'vemissed. The crack is right at the
junction where the two would meet wherethe all right, all right, I

(27:00):
got you, I got you. There's a couple of things you can do.
How much you think it's settled? Is it a half inch or more?
It's no, it's not a halfinch. It's probably it's less than
a half inch and probably a littlebit more than a quarter inch. Okay,
so is water getting down in there? In other words, is that

(27:21):
patio tilt towards the house as italso pulls away from the house. No,
it seems that it does tilt awayfrom the house with stunt, with
snow and whatever. Okay, itstill seeps down not a lot, but
okay, gotcha, gotcha. Sowhat you want to do is you want
to clean that crack out the bestyou can, because there could be weeds

(27:44):
and grass and you know, gunkgrowing up there. We want to have
is uninterrupted gap as we can.So clean that out the best you can.
Then maybe take like a putty knifeand let's see how deep it is,
so it could be two inches,it could be three ace of an
inch. The reason the reason I'masking you to do that is because if

(28:07):
it's more than three ace of aninch, we want to put some filler
into that gap. Otherwise we willwaste product that we're going to use to
fill that. And it's not thatcheap, and you know, so we
want to fill it. You canfill with two things. You could fill
with sand, so you can putsand in that crack or that gap and

(28:33):
bring it up to about three acesan inch from the surface of the pavers
or brick, or you could getwhat they call a cock saver, and
a cock saver is like foam ropeand it comes in different withsts and you
just press that down with your fingersor a screwdriver and you get it down

(28:53):
again about three aces of an inchbelow the surface. So now we have
it filled. We have a goodclean, stable area to seal that gap.
And there are there there's two reallyreally good ones. Just don't get

(29:14):
any kind of quote filler. Okay, a lot of times they're just latex
fillers and they're gonna last a yearor two. What you want is you
want a euthane filler or what theycall an advanced acrylic resin filler. Quick
Crete makes both of those, andit's called advanced acrylic resin concrete filler,

(29:38):
all right. And the other oneis a self leveling concrete filler. It's
probably your thane, so I meanyour a thane, So it's a your
athane self leveling crack filler, allright. All right, So so either
one of those will work if you'regonna use the eurothane self leveling crack filler.

(30:00):
You're going to need an industrial typeclocking gun. It's a little thicker
and it takes a little bit more, ok to get it out of the
calking tube, and you just runa bead down there and it'll self level
and if you need to put asecond beat over it, so be it
no problem. And if you usethe advanced resin acrylic, you can use

(30:22):
a regular clocking gun. And againif it'll self level, then you can
put a second beat over it ifyou need. Both of them. Has
superior adhesion and flexibility, so bothof those should work. Just find don't
use any cementatious product that's not goingto last at all. Latex crack fillers

(30:44):
aren't going to last either. Andthe company you said that quickly you can
find it pretty much in any hardwarestore, big box store. You can
also go to their website and takea look at him if you want.
It's q U I K R ET E dot com. Okay, great,

(31:07):
so it's Advance resident acrylic or you'rea thing that is correct, Okay
stupid. Thanks for your advice. All right, you're quite welcome, Thank
you, Bert. All Right, let's take a little break. We'll come

(34:20):
talking about your home and home projects, kind of preserving the value of our
homes and also making our homes morelivable. If you'd like to join us,
do so. It's eight hundred eightytwo three eight two five five bill
welcome, Thank you, Yes,sir. Question about the grime build up
on an arm of a chair, your kitchen dining chair, uh huh from

(34:45):
your hands? What what do youdo to take that off, remove it
and clean it so to speak?Well, if you got some mineral spirits
at home, you might try thatcotton cloth. If that didn't remove it,
which is a possibility. Boy,some of that grime is really really
tough. You can also try aproduct called Millsick and mill Sick. It's

(35:14):
mi ls e K. You canget it on Amazon. I think Ace
Hardware carries it also, and itis a grime and wax remover and wood
rejuvenator. It's over one hundred yearold product and I've had great luck with

(35:34):
that It's a phenomenal product for likecabinetry and furniture, and for real grimy
areas like around handles on a cabinet. It will take that off a lot
of times it's just the oils fromour hand and also maybe a wax build
up. You know, it's acombination of both in a lot of cases.
But I also have something on mytip sheets today which is kind of

(35:57):
along the same line is banisters.Would banisters we just let's see, our
banish is probably twenty four years old, and sometimes they just need to have
that removed mechanically. So you getlike a six hundred grit wet dry sandpaper

(36:21):
and just go over that surface andthen put an additional coat of your thane
on there. It's not going toreally hurt the stain. It's just going
to remove it if it's if it'sreally really a mess. I just did
our banisters. It was really amess. So those are the three stages
I would probably work with. Okay, Actually, your your screener asked how

(36:45):
many questions? I said too,Can I ask a third? Well,
go ahead, see if we gotwater mark. I purchased an addresser from
an auction and on the top.It has what appears to be water water
rings. Okay, what can Iuse it take that off? Well,
that MILLSIC will probably work for that. If you want to try something at

(37:07):
home, you can take some adamp cotton cloth, some regular toothpaste,
not the gel toothpaste, and alittle baking soda and you're gonna use a
little elbow grease circular pattern and andthat will that will remove that ring.

(37:32):
And not only will it remove thering to the table. Looks so good,
you'll end up doing the whole table. Okay, very good. Then
my last question is when I gotthe house, it appears that they use
a some type of double sided tapeor stick them to put something on the
cabinets in the kitchen and the mahogonywith maroon two to them and I want

(38:00):
stick them remaining stick them off.Okay, So is this just the adhesive,
the sticky adhesive that's left on thecabinet. Yes, yes, all
right, Again, I think thatMILLSIIC would probably work, though I haven't
used it to remove adhesives. Ifyou got a low cana WD forty,

(38:22):
uh, yeah, you can spraythat on cloth. You're gonna again the
long might even spray it on thestick them stuff first and give it a
few minutes and then come back witha cloth to see if you wipe it
away. There's also product called Googonthat'll remove it adhesives, if you got
some of that, that'll do thatalso. I was just wondering about,

(38:45):
you know, taking away the finishthough. To that, well, you
bring up a good point. Idon't think either one of those will hurt
that. But whenever you use ana type of product really or anything on
on cabnet or something that's going tobe really visible, i'd always try it
on the side to make sure it'snot going to hurt to finish. But

(39:06):
I don't think either one of thosewill hurt it. Very good. All
right, well, thank you verymuch. I appreciate your time at hell.
You're quite welcome. Thank you, great weekend. All right, let's
go to Craig. Craig welcome.Oh hi Gary. I am a two
and a half inch tongue and groovetheedter side porch and it's ten by twenty

(39:28):
and I had it sanded and refinishedlast year and I am just totally unhappy
with the finish on it. It'sjust you can't clean it, and the
dirt just seems to be it getson it. And I even tried getting
out of my hands and knees andscrubbing it with a brush and it will

(39:51):
not clean. And I was wondering. I ended up pressure washing it and
it come out really nice. I'dlike to refinish it. And do you
have any suggestions of like a marinegrade finish or something I can well,
what is this a rough song seateror is it smooth seater? It's smooth

(40:14):
okay? And is this on thewalls or is it on the floor.
It's the floor. It's the floor, okay. And even over the winter,
I put like my wife's bicycle onit, and even the black off
the tires on the bike got onit. And you it's harder than the
devil just to scribe everything. Itseems touches it marks it and uh yeah,

(40:39):
and I put a well known companyseiler on it, but it's I'm
just really not happy with it.So tell me the type of seiler you
can use the if you want. But is it like a varnish or your
athane or is it like a decksealer or what is it? It's outdoor
ceiler. There can I say thename of the company? Yeah, okay,

(41:06):
okay, okay. And so itwas clear, and you can't really
tell that there's anything on there, can you? No? Okay? Okay.
Well here's the thing. So Iwould get a It's hard to knock

(41:27):
a brand because so many brands haveso many different qualities of sealer, and
especially Thompson in their line, theygot some fairly good stuff and then they
got some inexpensive stuff. So ifit's just a straight water seal, I
would say that would be not areal heavy duty product. And if you

(41:49):
went with like a modified polymer superdeck product, that you would get and
it's a I think you can getin other places besides Shermaniams. But they
have a super deck. Modified hpolymer means like it's an alca acrylic.
It's got the penetration of an oilbased durability of an acrylic um, it's

(42:15):
it's a it's a semi transparent,so it will penetrate into the wood.
You can get it, and clear, you can get it. You're better
off even getting it in a cedarcolor or a color that's gonna be a
little bit more durable. Is thison a covered patio or just exposed.

(42:35):
Yeah, it's a screened in coveredOkay, yeah, yeah, I think
I would use that. If youuse when you said a marine eurothane or
something, you can use that. The only problem is that lays on the
surface, it's shiny and it's gonnawear out, and then putting more on
top of that can be challenging. So I wouldn't do that unless I absolutely

(42:58):
had to. I'd probably step upa little little bit to the super deck
product and let's see where we gofrom there and see if that takes care
of the issues. All right, thanks much for the call. I appreciate
it. As I've said, oneof my favorite products is gutter Brush.
You know, for nearly twenty yearsthey've been in business, and it prevents

(43:19):
water damage by keeping the gutters freeflowing. Comes in five different brush guard
sizes and it can fit and protectyour home and stop that clogging. Big
