(00:30):
Well, the weekends upon us.Welcome. You're at home with Gary Salvent
taking it through the weekend, talkinga little home improvement. And this hour
is brought to you by Wit andForget. Look at it. If you're
looking for a simple way to cleanyour outdoor surfaces of mold and mildew,
black green, ugly stains with noscrubbing, I got the answer. Simply

(00:50):
apply, we and forget and letnature do the rest. Say, for
all your outdoor surfaces, you canpick up a bottle at home Depot,
Low's, Walmart, Mono cards,a hardware and do it best. All
right, the weekend's here, solet's get a little work done around the
home. And sure we'll talk aboutthe heat wave too. Let me give
you the phone number you can graba line. It's eight hundred eight two

(01:15):
three A two five five. Wewere going to talk to Ron Wilson today,
but we all know what we'd talkabout. Watering. Actually, Ron's
and Columbus today, so he's busyat a remote and it's you and me
and we'll talk about your projects.Fair enough, but do water and I
heard Ron talking today for your landscaping, for your lawns, whatever you are

(01:41):
trying to protect one good soaking likean inch and that'll take care at least
from a protection device. Don't teaseit, that's his big line. Don't
tease the lawn, don't tease thebushes with a little fifteen minute water.
And I agree, I agree,A good soaking much better. All Right,

(02:05):
you got the phone number, graba line, and again we'll talk
about ways to be a little comfortablein the heat. And I was joking
with Ron Wilson on his show. You know, each generation it's a little
bit easier to handle extremes of temperature, but in newer generations we get the

(02:27):
ability to be frightened easier. Thisis not the first heat wave you've experienced,
and heat waves back, I meanlike super duper weather alert, first
winting weather days because it's hot.Yeah, yeah, which is fine.
I'm not gonna knock it eight Iwill. Yeah, I know. But
you know, before air conditioning andthings like that, and even before housing

(02:50):
and think about the how you dealtwith heat waves in but even though we
have nice homes and in many casesthey're air conditioned, if you have some
issues with heat that can be dangerous. So there's precautions to be taken.
And there's also just precautions on usingdifferent products, tackling different projects when it's

(03:15):
really hot, and we'll talk aboutthat what to watch for and what maybe
not to do, but happy totalk about the projects that you are going
to do. Again. That numberis eight hundred eight two three A two
five five. So to get thingskicked off today, and we certainly will
kick them off with Randy. Randy, welcome, Oh Gary, Hello.

(03:42):
Say, I have an above groundpool and it's got that hard plastic around
the top and it's textured. Ialso have an irrigation system, so groundwater
is water in the yard. Allright, I'm sorry, well city water,
and I have hard water deposits onthe plastic. I I you know,
the wind blows in it, eventhough I have the the irrigation set

(04:06):
not to go on, to pullright and always control it right right.
Any suggestions, So is it hardwater deposits where it's just like a white
chalkiness or has it got some rustto it or or just white just white?
Yeah, I mean you could trysomething really as simple as vinegar.

(04:29):
You could try a product called CLR. If it's really stubborn, there's a
product by Jaws called cream cleanser, which I know it works. Yeah,
I know that it'll work because it'sworked on everything I've tried. But really,
if you got some CLR or vinegar, you might try wiping it down,

(04:49):
spray it on there, or putit on there and let it sit,
uh, you know, ten minutesor so, and see if you
can wipe it off. It's goingto depend on the amount of assium carbonate
that is built up. But youknow, seriously, a mild mild acid
may very well do it. Nowif you need some guts to it,
you know, and you know thatdidn't phase it or whatever, that cream

(05:13):
cleanser will knock it out. I'msure I was just the cr you think
that'll be? Okay? On theplastic should be. It's packaged really in
a vinyl bottle, so it shouldbe always test any of those products.
But yeah, you should be finethere, all right, okay, all
right, you bet take care again. That number is eight hundred and eight

(05:34):
two three eight two five five,And boy, this is the time of
year we do talk about a lotof hard water deposits, effluorescence build up
on masonry surfaces, rust on metalsurfaces, and you know, the old
adage, you know what's causing theproblems. Some things we can change,
some things we can't, and wejust got to deal with the refurnishing of

(05:57):
it or the refinishing of it.Rust especially, you're not gonna you know,
you can protect this steel and stuffwith quality paints, and once that
paint becomes compromised, cracks and peelsand it starts rusting. Sure, we
can take care of the rust, and we can take care of the problem
because the cure is the same. We're putting a coat of pain on there.

(06:18):
We're not doing it just for decoration. It's a protectant. And of
course there's all different types of techniquesto do it. The most basic is
wire brush, get that rust off, get a good gray metal primer on
there, and a good you know, metal coating painting over it to seal

(06:40):
that steel. But yeah, it'sonly going to continue to get worse,
so tackling those projects will be fine. Certainly. The only limitation on that
in terms of heat would be howmuch can you take? Product will work
fine? Let's go to Norma Normawelcome, Hi, thank you for taking

(07:00):
my call. I have a waterproblem. I've had the water company and
on that they can't find anything.I've had the plumber come out, he
can't find anything. What it isis a steady drip. This has been
going on for months. We hearit. It's really faint, but other

(07:25):
people have heard it also, butthey can't find anything. And you know,
underneath of the house is dry. They went under the house to look
like a water company US checked tosee if they have anything moving and they
say no, But I've got adrip and it just it's driving me crazy.

(07:47):
So anybody else had it, Well, let me ask you a couple
of questions. So you know it'shard for me to tell you what's going
on. If you've had a plumberout there to inspect it has affected your
water bill? Well, my waterbill I think has gone up. But
then we had the grandkids in too. So okay, has anyone done a

(08:11):
pressure test on the plumbing system itself? A pressure test? Uh? Huh,
Not that I know of. Okay, so did the plumber? Didn't
speak of that or anything? Right, No, So there's several things you
can consider. We can have adrip coming from a supply lines of water

(08:35):
that's bringing the water to the houseand through the faucets and all that.
That's one place of water. Thenyou can also your drainage lines where water
goes down the drain it's going througha series of pipes, there's a hole
in it or a little fracture init, certainly that can cause a drip.
Then the question becomes is a dripall the time or do you just

(08:58):
hear it periodically? And then thethird is condensation. We got cold water
running through a steel pipe and it'sgoing through a hot crawl space per chance,
and you know, you could getsome condensation and a drip. Or
maybe not be the water line,it could be an exhaust pipe and condensation
that could be a drip. Sois it constant or is it just every

(09:18):
now and then? So if it'sconstant, that's kind of telling me it
would be a supply line. Andthey can do a pressure test. What
they'll do is they'll turn off yourwater going to your home and drain all
the water out of the pipes, and then they will close the pipes and

(09:43):
they'll put water in the pipes ornot sorry, they'll put air in the
pipes to a certain pressure and they'llsee if that pressure decreases and if it's
decreasing, they'll know it's in thesupply line of the pipes in the house.
And right now we don't know that. We don't know where it's coming

(10:09):
from. Now, this is thewater company that would have to do this,
right, I don't know if thewater company does that. You could
check with him. I think it'sa plumber that's going to do that.
Oh okay, okay, But wegot a pinpoint. We got a pinpoint
where it's at. There's actually, and I forget the name of it,

(10:31):
there's leak detection services out there whereyou know, I mean, when it's
driving you crazy, you got todo something. I mean, it could
it's you know, I'm sure theycheck the toilets, and toilets don't flush
themselves or anything along those lines. So maybe it's not the toilet. But
I think you just need a pressuretest on your plumbing system to see if

(10:52):
it's in the supply system at all. Okay, okay, all right,
try that. If I can findthe company that you're talking about that does
this, Yeah, just google leakprotection, uh, leak detection, I
should say, see something will popup. There's there's several of them that

(11:13):
do nothing. But that or aplumbing company will do that. Okay,
well, I appreciate pick up.Oh, thank you very much. Right,
welcome, thanks Norman, take care, drive me crazy? I get
it all right. Let's take abreak. Our phone numbers eight hundred eight
two three eight two five five Youand me today at home with Gary Solivan.

(14:28):
with Kerry Salvan. I hope youhaving a great weekend. We're getting a
few things done around the home andhappy to talk to you about your home
project. Let's go to Ron Ron. Welcome morning, Gary morning. Hey,
I've got a low spot in mycrawl space in the north all right,
I'm sorry, southwest corner. Andwhen we get a lot of rain,

(14:50):
there's no leak, but the waterseems to come up, like the
water table rises from all the inthe low spot of the neighborhood anyway,
yep. But it's not enough forlike a some pump or anything like that.
It just gets wet, muddy andyou know, gooey. And so

(15:11):
I just wondered if there's a recommendationfor like rock or sand or something in
there to raise that corner, todo something to minimize Yeah, that moisture,
Well, you can do all that. The bottom line is this though
the water table under that crawl spaceis high, right, and it's like

(15:37):
a Saint Mark's square in Venice. The water rises, it comes right through
the asphalt. Then you got afoot of water all the way through the
square. Same thing's going on inyour cross space is you know that water's
rising above the ground level, andyou know you throw a rock on it
and sand on it, that wateris still so there's gonna be a lot

(16:00):
of humidity in there, and ifit rains real hard, it can still
reach that. The real answer iswhat you said you didn't need is what
you need, and that is asump well and a sump pump, which
will then as that water table isrising, water takes path least resistance.

(16:21):
There's gonna be this void in thislittle well. That water's gonna gravitate to
that, and you're gonna pump iton the outside of the house and effectively
continue to lower the water level sothat it never gets up there and gets
all muddy and gooey. And thenonce you've got that corrected. I think
I would come back and add somesand, gravel, may put plastic sheeting

(16:47):
on it, because there's that watervapor that's always coming up through that ground,
creating a very humid space, whichcan cause mold inside to cross space,
can cause wood rot on your subfloors, and I think you need
to move the water away and thencontrol the humidity with a vapor barrier on

(17:07):
the floor. Yeah, okay, all right, Well it just didn't seem
like there was enough to If yougot standing water, there's enough. There's
more. There's more water than whatyou're just seeing. Okay, So yeah,
there's two In fact, cross spaces. They just had a long meeting

(17:33):
on cross spaces about four weeks ago, and we were talking about the two
things. Is you can have standingwater and then you can just have high
humidity levels in cross space. Andyou know, the high humidity levels are
bad enough, but once you starthaving an experience with standing water, you
you got to correct that and movethat out. If it's high humidity,

(17:56):
you've got to create vapor barriers onthe floor and control that humidity. Even
it's a matter of vapor beriers onfloor and deumidification inside of cross space.
But whether it's humidity or water vaporor standing water, it's something that's got
to get corrected because molds and mildewsand wood rot will become a problem.

(18:19):
So what type of company would specializein that sort of service. Well,
for a sump well and pump, you could do a plumber would take care
of that. If you wanted todo what they call whole house encapsulation,
waterproof companies do you know, basementsand crawl spaces depending on where you are

(18:42):
in a country, you know,And so a waterproofing company would do a
sump well, some pump, thenthey would put a vapor bearrier on the
floors and halfway up the walls andcreate kind of a conditioned space there.
So it depends how far you wantto get involved in it. But for
a sump well and pomp, youknow, certainly a plumbing company can do

(19:04):
that too. Okay, all right, all right, appreciate your idea.
Okay, Ron, thanks, appreciateto call. Thank you our phone number

eight two three A two five yfive about your home projects and Donald welcome

(23:45):
him. Gary morning. I've gotan old house and it's the basement,
you know, that has a cisternand there's just a break wall between the
basement and assistant. I've got asmall leaky spot. I've tried to dry

(24:07):
paint or whatever of even trying hydraulicseamen, and it just seeps through in
a little spot outside of the quarter. Is there a crack or a hole
there? No, it's just likea sea peach, you know, so
it's kind of is it weeping throughthe wall. Yeah, Okay, there's

(24:30):
no scene there or nothing. Okay. I even took hydraulic seamen dry and
held it up against there. Yeah, that won't work. But you did
say something about a paint called drysomething dry lock that should work. Get
help. It just bubbled up.Yeah, but that's made a big bubble

(24:52):
underneath there, But that should work. That's what it's designed to do,
is to eliminate water that can weepthrough a basement wall or any kind of
wall. It has the ability tohold back ten pounds of pressure per square
inch, which is fairly substantial.Yeah. So I even took a water

(25:18):
brush and brush it down real goodand everything. And I come back about
two three days later, and there'sa bubble there where the water is,
you know, coming through, it'sholding it back. But you know yeah,
yeah, yeah, got you.So so is the water getting into
the cistern still? Is it afunctioning cistern? Well? See, I

(25:41):
know what you're getting out there. You want me to drain and then go
on the inside. Well, here'swhat's going on with the inside. Here's
what's going on. I mean,I can. I really don't have to
answer ask you the question. Iknow what's going on because I'd already said
the dry lock will hold back tenpounds per square inch of pressure, and
then you said, and the paint'sjust bubbling off, which is telling me

(26:06):
the water pressure is beating the drylock, which means there's more pressure than
ten pounds per square inch, whichmeans that cistern's got water in it.
Yeah, it's a pretty good sizedcistern. Yeah, and it's got pressure.
But I don't really want to drainit and then have to go down

(26:27):
inside there. Well, there's nothingI can put on the outside. What
No, No, I mean, because it's there's just enough pressure in there
where it's like think about this,It's like you know, when you're jumping
off a diving board into the deepend of the pool and you go down

(26:47):
five six feet in your ears pop, that's water pressure. And there's you
know, a massive water in acontainer which has pressure, and it's literally
pushing through that concrete and there's enoughpressure there that A waterproof paint and that's

(27:08):
one of the best isn't holding itback. That's why the paint is peeling.
Can't it can't stand up to it. Oh, okay, say so,
the only way to take is drain. I think you got to drain
it. I think you got togo in and examine it for cracks.

(27:29):
If there's cracks, you're gonna haveto chisel them out. You can pack
it with a hydraulic cement and youcan coat it with a waterproof paint like
a dry lock. That's one option. The other option if you can find
a crack on the outside, maybeand I'd have to check that service.
I'm not thoroughly up to speed onit. There's injectable under pressure epoxy sealants

(27:56):
where if you can find a crack, they'll drill into the crack and then
they'll pump this epoxy ceiling into thecrack and it'll have a higher PSI count
to holding that water back. Butfrom what you told me, it was
just kind of weeping through. Therereally wasn't a crack, and then you
would be back to draining it andfinding the crack on the inside. I

(28:22):
was I think you want, Iwant to know you just tell me.
I can't fix it from the inside. You can probably fix it, you
can't fix it from the outside. That would be my guess. I mean,
you can call some cistern people andmaybe there's something. And I don't
know every product that's out there inthe world. Maybe there is something I'm
not familiar with it. If thereis, all right, all right,

(28:45):
all right, good luck, takecare, bye bye. All right,
you can join us as we talka little home improvement. It's eight hundred
eight two three eight two five fiveAnd if you listen to the show long
enough, that response will make senseto you. Water always wins, always,

(29:07):
and if there's enough pressure, itcertainly will. It's one of the
reasons why we talk about water proofingbasements. And somebody will say, well,
the foundation's got to crack in it, and I patch I want to
patch that, and then I'll takecare of the problem. And you might
for a while. But my answer, or my question back to the caller

(29:30):
is okay, So if you patchthat crack, where does that water go?
Hmm? It's just not going tostay there because there's a lot of
pressure there, or it wouldn't acrack to begin with. So where does
that wather go? And this isfrom experience too, it will go somewhere

(29:52):
and it'll probably cause another crack. The weakest point will crack. And you
know where that weakest point is usuallyright by the basement window, right on
the corner. That's the weakest point. Ruth, Welcome, Good morning,
Garrett morning. I have a brandnew stainless steel sink and I washed a

(30:18):
stone where cookie heat in it,not thinking about putting a mat or a
towel down first. Anyway, Iscratched my new sink. It's not a
gouge, but just kind of asurface scratch. I was wondering if you
could tell me a way to buckthat out. Hmm. You know,

(30:41):
my stainless steel go to product andit'll take scratches, but I don't know
if it's going to take anything that'sa substantial to scratch out of it.
It would be like barkeeper's friend whichis an oxolic acid, and it's mainly
used as a cleaner, not asa scratch remover. The other option would

(31:04):
be possibly I have to do alittle research on it too, but taking
a jeweler's rouge and a buffing padon a drill and maybe buff that out.
Okay, maybe an option. Trythat first, Yeah, try that

(31:25):
or even read the label. Obviouslyif I had a can of it sitting
here, I could do that. But uh, just it'll take it'll say
scratches. I'm pretty sure, andI think I've even used it for you
know, over time, how youget several bunch of little tiny scratches on
there and you can buff those outwith that. But it's more of a

(31:45):
cleaner than a scratch remover. Buttry that out, read the label,
see if that's something that you thinkit would work, or just give it
a try. That would be oneoption, and then if that doesn't work,
you're probably gonna have to do alittle research. I would I would
look under stainless steel slash jewelers rougencyif there's a buffing cream also like a

(32:08):
polishing compound for automotive use. Idon't think i'd go to something as substantial
as a rubbing compound, but apolishing compound and a lambs wool buffer that
that very well could take it outalso. Okay, I'll give use a
try. Very good, thanks forthe call. All right, Marching our

(35:50):
around the home. Thanks for joiningme as we work together and accomplish a
few projects. And if you'd liketo join us, it's eight hundred eight
two three eight two five five Patriciawelcome. Yeah, yes, yeah,
I'm here, Okay, yeah.I have a question about poison IVY and

(36:14):
this what is brought up to meby some gardeners that were waiting for me.
They said my poison I was rampant. I sprayed it like early April
and then I was gone. Iwent out of town and now it's everywhere.
That's what they said. I'm nota good identifier of it, but
they said the only way to reallyget rid of it is to pull it

(36:35):
up. Is that true? Orcan I just spray it with the brush?
Well, you can do both. You can do both. The thing
I got to warn you about iseven when you spray it and it is
dead to your you know, toview it, it appears dead and you
pull it up, you can stillget poison ivy. Yeah. My neighbor

(36:58):
said, he's he's been a sprayit for me. Yeah. Yeah,
So well you know, or saythat again, what do I recommend?
What you recommend both? Yeah?I usually what. I think it's easier
to handle once it's dead. ButI'm just warning you that you can still
get poison ivy from it. Soyou know, take some cardboard shields or

(37:22):
something and protect if it's growing upin the bushes, to protect the bush
and spray it and you know, let it die and then you know,
lungs. Take all the precautions, long sleeves, gloves and uh, get
that pulled out and you know, keep an eye on it. So that
if it starts to regrow from theroot and maybe some of the roots left

(37:45):
in there, it starts to grow, respray it and you got to stay
on top of it. It's toughto kill, but you know it can
be elimonade. You just got toprotect yourself and keep an eye on it
for sure. Okay. So itis possible to pull it up. Yes,
mm hmm, very much, sovery much okay, And I wanted
to let you know. I calledBrian Adas to come out with it my

(38:07):
roof. Yes, and I hadtwo other estimates, which you recommend to
me, and the other two said, oh yeah, I needed a roof.
Ryan said, you don't need aroom? Is that right? Him
so much? He was so honest, and you were right about him.
You can't get any better than him. I mean, when I am ready
for one, he will be theone to put it on excellent. So

(38:30):
you're quite welcome. Thank you, take care. And that's when you know,
isn't that funny? I've bet it'snot just Patricia. I had the
same thing happened, oh my gosh, thirty years ago, getting ready for
a roof, and you know theroof for I was dealing with same way,

(38:53):
just you got probably four more yearsand I replaced it with them two
years later. So Dian, findinga good roofer that isn't worried about selling
a roof today, but making acustomer pays so many great dividends because you

(39:16):
know if they're doing it right, and they'll have it all spelled out on
the bed and you'll know. Butthen if you have problems, they're on
your side. They're there to helpyou solve the problems. It's invaluable.
I mean, you get it's hardto buy that service, but you find

(39:36):
a good quality roofer, you willget that service. Paul welcome. Yeah,
Denny, I have a deck behindmy house and a number of trees,
and I'm kind of exhausted at tryingto keep the decking the flooring clean
and ceiling it every couple of years. And I'm seventy seven years old,

(39:58):
and I want to give in andtake up the treated lumber on the deck
and install composite the joyst underneath. There are sixteen inches on the center and
the boards that are down there nowmeasure one by five. Is there any
issues I would have in taking thoseboards up and installing a composite deck on

(40:20):
top. No, the only issuesyou may have. I mean, the
spacing is fine, Paul, sothat won't be an issue. Getting the
pressure treated wood up and examining thetop surface of that joye. You got
to seven years the joy throwing sevenyears old, okay, good, so

(40:42):
there probably would not be any woodrot. But you and and and the
boards were put down with screws.Okay. When you take it up.
There's a membrane that you can gothat is an adhesive type membrane that goes
over the top part of that joye. Oh okay, use that because what

(41:05):
that does is when you pressure treatwould and I'm talking about the joice also.
Now that pressure treatment only goes downmaybe a half inch. And when
you're taking up those boards, andeven if it's a screws, you're gonna
have some dings, some dench,You're gonna have some open spots where those
screws were. And this rubber membranethat goes over that seals all that up,

(41:29):
okay and makes it waterproof. Otherwisethat moisture can get down where those
old screws were and it could costsome rod. It's not gonna happen.
Overnight, but it's gonna happen. So get that membrane at one of the
big box stores. You can getthat wherever you're getting your composite decking or
even wood decking. It's a commonpractice now. It came out I'm gonna

(41:52):
say, about eight years ago.Maybe it's been a little longer, but
it's a necessary step for sure.Thank you very much for the coaching.
All right, very good, Thankyou, take care and let's go to
Ron Ron. Welcome, Hey Gary, longtime dedicated listener. Thank you,

(42:12):
sir. My sister Mary is Sullivan. I mean he's a good guy at
any rate. I've got a deckquestion too, and it's basically the same
thing. Our dick is like seventeenyears old. And the base is you
know, buck lane and everything else. And are there different grades of tricks
I'm thinking of putting a composite downyou know, yeah, yeah there are.

(42:36):
And you're you're bringing up a goodpoint too. So one of the
big trends is people pulling the olddeck boarding off using the old frame,
and you can do that, butjust have it inspected, make sure that
whole frame is good solid. Youuse that membrane that I was just talking
about and sixteen inch on center. That's what's going to be required when you're

(42:59):
using a composite that are cap composite, and yes you can do that.
Now where the trend is on compositesis capped composites. So the original composites
that Treks came out was a composite. It was wood flower and plastic.
And what they found out is itscratched, it faded, it turned gray,

(43:22):
It looked like cement slabs. Andthey even now have stained for that
type of composite. But maybe fifteenyears ago they started cappting it with a
PVC or a polystyrene and it takesthe wood flower that's in the composite out
of play. And that's really wherethat whole composite decking categories going. So

(43:50):
if you can swing the cap compositsa little bit more than the regular composite
is well worth the money. It'scalled cap cap Yeah, yeah, cap
composite, and you can. Whenyou talk about different levels, I think
Tres has a regular composite, thenthey have a cap composite, but they
don't encapsulate the whole deck. Likethe tongue in groove is still a composite.

(44:14):
It's not capped, okay, andthen they have an entire cap where
the tongue in groove is capped andthe whole works. And you know,
ideally, if we can take thewoodflower out of play and have the whole
thing capped, that's that's the directioni'd go. All right, music's playing,
Thank you very much. We gotmore hours to come your way.

(44:35):
And one of my favorite products,of course is the Easy Breathe. If

(44:59):
one of my home. I'm unpluggedit last year. I think for about
a day or two you could smellthe difference in my basement without that ventilation
system going. All right, welltake that break, Robert, you'll be
first, and then Bert you're athome with Gary Sullivant. Fix it right
