(00:32):
Well, it's a weekend welcome. You're at home with Gary Salvin. It's

the glass cleaner, you can getthe disinfectant, the all purpose cleaner,
the granite cleaner. It goes onand on and Uh. For orders

(00:57):
over thirty five bucks, you getfree shipping. I want you check it
out. Uh for sure. Theglass cleaner is the best I've ever used.
It's jawscleans dot com. So thereyou go, and we thank them
for their sponsorship. Well, anotherweekend getting things done around the home,
and encourage you to give us acall. Let's talk about your project,
whether it's one you're anticipating doing, maybe one you're in the middle of um

(01:23):
or maybe one you're just wrapping upand you want to share maybe some tips
on that particular project. Our phonenumber is eight hundred eight two three eight
two five five hot pretty much throughoutthe whole country hot, and of course
this time of year that makes sense, but it seems like it's uncomfortably hot

(01:44):
this year, hotter than normal Uh, the data shows that. So we're
always kind of talking about heat, humidity, insulation, ventilation, weather stripping,
and how to make you more comfortable, and also how to save money

(02:06):
and be more comfortable. And asI've stated on the show thousands of times,
I'm sure is sometimes it's just assimple as changing the air filter.
When was the last time you changedthe air filter on the air handler?
Depleated filters need to be changed everyninety days. We just have been working

(02:29):
on a couple projects. One ofthem was tearing up a ceramic top floor,
big project, a lot of dust. The filter always dated in my
phone when it needs to be changedin ninety days, and it was probably
at about fifty days, and Ithought, well, you know, with
all the dust we've been generating,Yeah, go down, pull that filter

(02:51):
to take a look at it.And turned off the blower, pulled out
the filter, held it up inthe light. I couldn't see through it.
It was just packed with dirt. And we had just completed the project,
so it wasn't like that. Probablya week before, or I don't
think it was. It was probablycaused by that project, and I thought,

(03:14):
jeez, I'm glad. I lookedbecause here we are in a summer
that is exceptionally hot, and hereI am with a completely dirty filter after
this project, and it's really hotout and that thing's working over time to

(03:35):
satisfy that thermostat, so I'm notas comfortable and it's costing me more money.
So just a heads up. Youdon't have to be doing a project,
but you know, if it's sixtydays or something, you've had a
lot of company over or whatever. The case may be a lot of activity

(03:57):
in the house or you're doing aproject or two. Not a bad idea
to just give it a quick look, see and again if it you know,
if it appears more, you know, bunched up with dirt than normal,
change it out, change it out. The flat filters thirty days.
So that's one way you can bemore efficient and makes yourself more comfortable in

(04:21):
your home. The other ones isas old as the moon. Pull the
shades. Pull the shades down.Even if you've got the best of windows,
low eglass and all that stuff, and you know, diminishes solar heat
gain. You know, great numbers. Pull the shades down just helps a
little bit more. Also deflectors. You know where you're actually deflecting the cool

(04:48):
air out of the register. Now, if you've got a register and it's
just shooting right up into the room, who cares, right, that's fine.
But maybe you got it where it'spartially blocked by a couch or something.
It's blown it up the side ofthe couch, right up against the
window, the shades are open. It's going to take a while to enjoy
that coolness. So if you're deflectingit right out along the ground or right

(05:12):
underneath the sofa, maybe that's whatyou need to do. So a couple
tips there, none that you getinto the bigger things. And we had
a lot of conversations and happy tohave these conversations again quite honestly, on
how to balance out the temperature inyour home. Many of us have a
disparity between the second floor temperature wherethe bedrooms are in a lot of cases,

(05:39):
and the first floor because that thermostatsright in the middle of the hall
or dining room and hot air rises, and you know, maybe the bedrooms
are four, five, six sevendegrees warmer than that first floor. What
can we do? What can weadd? Do we just live with it?

(06:03):
I can tell you, you know, one of the simple ways.
I you've got ceiling fans in there, use them. That seems pretty simple.
And make sure that fans going theright way. You should be able
to stand underneath that fan and feelthe air blowing down on you. That's
the way they should be running inthe summertime. So you can even take

(06:26):
a little tissue and just hold itup and if it's that air is you
know, disturbing, that tissue that'sin your hand is blowing down on you,
that's perfect. So that'll be acooling effect. Bigger, bigger options,
of course, come into play whenyou talk about insulation, adding insulation.
A lot of home still very muchunder insulated or ventilating. We had

(06:50):
that whole conversation yesterday. You know, if your roof is not ventilated,
your home not ventilated, uh,not properly ventilated. We had a call
yesterday where the roof was actually onlya couple years old and there was buckling
going on. Well that attic temperaturewithout ventilation, yeah, it can be

(07:14):
one hundred and forty hundred and fiftydegrees. It avoid the warranty on that
roof. And this fella was saying, well, the roofer never even really
mentioned that I got a couple likeshoe box vents up there, and like,
well maybe maybe there's maybe that's properventilation. There's a formula, and

(07:39):
he wasn't aware of that, andhe wished he would have put on a
ridge vent. And then I wastelling him, well, then you may
not have used the shoe vent andsay, there you know there is formulas
for lowering that temperature. A properlyventilated attic when it's ninety degrees out still
can be one hundred and ten degreeschained bad at all. There's a whole

(08:01):
lot better than one hundred and forty. And you wonder why those upstairs bedrooms
aren't real comfortable. Yeah, that'sone of the reasons. Like right on
the other side of that drywall, there's a little insulation, but you got
a lot lot of heat up there. That heat can come in through the
can lights and other areas on thaton that attic. So we can talk

(08:24):
a little bit about that also makingus just a little bit more comfortable in
our home and without getting hurt witha huge, huge energy bill at the
end of the month, that's forsure. Also a lot of interior projects
going on. We, like Isaid, we just had a big one
going on. We're changing out theceramic tile in a kitchen, hallway and
laundry room. And you talk abouta dirty, messy job. That's a

(08:48):
good one, all right. Letme give you the phone number you can
grab a line, happy to chatwith you about your project. It's eight
hundred eight two three A two fivefive, Grab a line Danny, ready

(11:56):
at home with Gary Sullivan. We'renineteen minutes after the top of the hour.
Little home improvement and I guess sometips to stay cool and also do
that project, you know, withenergy efficiency in mind. Those are some
of the tips I've passed along andhappy to take your call regarding your home
project or maintenance. It's eight hundredeight two three eight two five five.

(12:20):
Feel free to join us. Ilove to talk to you about your project
other things where we see I guessa lot of heat that can enter your
home. We had a long conversationabout garages yesterday, and we were talking
really about the importance of lubricating therails, the wheels, the hinges,

(12:43):
the springs, et cetera. Becausethe doors they get stressed. Quite honestly,
the mechanics on the door get stressedduring extremes extreme heat, extreme cold.
But also, as we you know, work our way through a year,
garage doors seem to be a naturalhighway for mice that can get into

(13:07):
your home, heat that can getinto your home. In a lot of
cases, we use the garage doorto enter the garage. If you have
a man door next to it,that's really the door you should be using,
letting all that heat in. Ormaybe that door itself is improperly weather

(13:28):
stripped, maybe that seal at thebottom is compromised. Those don't last forever,
And to be real honest, Ithink if I did an examination of
the weather stripping and the seal onthe bottom of garage doors, I would
find a lot of them that arein a little bit of disrepair. And

(13:48):
that might be another way, especiallyif that garage door is insulated. Probably
not gonna much matter much if youhave like an old steel pan garage door,
But if you have an insulate garage. I know for a fact that
some of our higher quality garage doorsright now they almost have an our value

(14:09):
of an R twenty and properly weatherstripped. You know, in quite honestly,
in the warmest of temperatures, thatgarage can stay in pretty good shape,
or in the coldest time of thewinter can stay above freezing. And
it's just because of an insulated door. It's because we got a weather stripped

(14:30):
we got to steal at the bottomgood in good repair. And those are
something you might want to just takea look see and make the adjustment as
needed, because you know, especiallyin the newer homes, and when I
say newer homes, I'm really talkingprobably in the last forty five fifty years,
where we've got insulation in those wallsand we got an insulated garage door.

(14:56):
It's kind of a conditioned space toa degree, right, I mean,
just from leakage and insulation, itcan it can stay seventy degrees in
there on a really hot day,not bad at all. And so take
a look at the door, takea look at weather stripping, and see

(15:18):
what kind of shape that And whileyou're at it too, you might as
well just go ahead and do thelubrication of the rouse and the wheels and
different things like that. Like Isaid, they're very vulnerable during extreme temperatures.
And you don't do it with likea WT forty and you don't do
it with grease. You can doit with a silicone. You can do

(15:39):
it with a teflon. Blaster makesa garage door lubricant which is a combination
of teflons, and it's going tolast longer, it's not going to get
thick, it's not going to becumbersome, and it's going to work very
well for you. Again, youknow, they have a tendency to really
fit during extremes. And clean itout. Get a rag, use a

(16:04):
little bit of mineral spirits cotton clothand clean those rails up. And then
a little squirt you know, alongthe rail, move that door back and
forth, get it on the wheels, and don't forget to do the hinges
in the springs too. Always agood idea to keep those, you know,
from corroding, keep them working wellalso. All right, So our

(16:26):
phone number is eight hundred eight twothree eight two five five. Other things
we're getting weather wise is extremes inthe amounts of rainfall. And another thing
to keep in mind, especially ifyou're in an area where you're seeing that.
And I guess my experience in thelast probably three months is it looks

(16:49):
like everybody's kind of experiencing it andit being Yeah, we always have thundershowers
in summertime and you know, somedownpours, but it seems very extreme this
year and lots of rain. Itjust maybe we had a shower, I
guess on Friday where I met andnothing probably didn't last a half hour.

(17:17):
We had to have almost it hadto be an inch of rain. I
mean, there was a water couldn'teven soak into the lawns. So,
as I've stayed it many times, your number one enemy in your home is
water. And if you've been chasinga leak or it doesn't even hurt,
quite honestly, to even be mindfulof what's going on inside your home.

(17:41):
There's certainly areas in your home ifthere is a leak that you would probably
have to search for it a littlebit. Maybe it's a finished basement,
maybe it's behind storage wrecks, butkind of sniffing around and taking a look
in those areas. I always likethe line. Well, it never really

(18:03):
leaks and unless it rains real hard, yeah, that's usually the case,
unless you got to be cracking awall. But a lot of times those
problems certainly originate from the outside in, right you're bringing water in, so
things to look at. I saidthe water couldn't even run off some of

(18:23):
the lawns on Friday, Well, that's a good time right after that downpour
that goes for a half hour andmaybe you get an inch of rain,
is to really get outside and walkaround that foundation, see if there's any
puddles right on that foundation. Youcan also look up at your gutters and
see if there's any tiny leaves, maple seeds, you know, the things

(18:48):
that are stuck on the outside ofthe gutter, and that's an indication to
you that they've overflowed and poured thatwater right on that foundation. Or even
if you use a lot of mulch, to take a look at the mulched
areas around the foundation and see ifthey've been washed out again. All indications
that well, it's catching all thatwater around that roof, bringing it to

(19:12):
the edge of the roof down spouts, taking it hopefully away from the foundation.
If that system isn't working. It'sdumping it all right on that foundation.
It's leaving you open for a potentialproblem inside your home. All right,
you got the phone number. Yougive us a call. We come
back. We're going to talk alittle bit about getting rid of spiders.
Spider's just going to start getting reallyactive, and we'll talk about that and

some Responsible solutions dot com. Allright, back at it we go at

(22:33):
home with Gary Solon. By theway, it is time for our project
of the week, and joining meonce again is Teresa Britton. And Teresa,
how in the world are you?I'm good? How are you?
I'm fine, I'm hot, andwe've had a lot of rain and now
spiders, I mean, we goteverything going on. Oh right, right,

(22:56):
I tell you we've got the perfectsolution for that you do, which
is also in case I ever haveto give an award to you. It's
like the product with the greatest name. We hear that a lot. Actually
there you Yeah, they did agreat job with the name on that one.
I think too, so, soyou know, Yeah, tell us

(23:19):
a little bit about this product toget rid of spiders. I mean,
do you have to have spiders toget rid of them? Is it a
preventter or give us a little storyon this. Yeah, you can.
Actually it does a prevention too.So what you can do if you have
existing spiders, you can spray downall the cobwebs that you have, or

(23:40):
if you just want to start prevention, you can spray it around the exterior
of your house, and you canactually spray on the interior also, like
any of the areas where you youknow, prone to have spiders in your
basement, where you have you know, your boxes and storage stuff up in
your corners. I noticed at myhouse, I get them up and you
know, the owners of all myceilings right so right down in the basement,

(24:03):
those joyce pockets, there's always spiderwebs there, absolutely, you know.
And as we get closer to fall, they want to come in.
They so they come towards the housemore and you'll notice like on your porch,
stoops, in your lights, allthose different areas. You'll start to
see them build up. So it'sa really good idea to go ahead and
you know, start putting that outand you'll get up to a eyeu of

(24:26):
protection from spiders when you spray thaton your areas that get a lot of
like rainfall. You may have toreapply there a little bit more often,
okay, but it does a fantasticjob, like I so you don't have
to get out your ladders and youknow, try to hit those high spots
you know, like eaves and differentthings. It sprays up to ten feet
with the spray that we have onthere, which is really nice. So

(24:49):
so folks, the name of theproduct here it is that miss Muffets Revenge.
Great name. So spiders like tobuild their webs wherever there's an airflow
because that's how they trap their prey, right, that's how they trap their
food. So you know, asyou're spraying, they wet and forget onto

(25:12):
the webs and preventing spiders from gettinginto your home. Pay attention to where
these webs are because I mentioned thejoist pockets down in the basement. That's
telling you there's an energy loss therealso, so you can kind of you
know, kill two spiders with onestone. Excellent, So indoor outdoors and

(25:36):
uh, just spray things down,Huh. That's it. That's absolutely yep.
You just keep them away, yep. So the Miss Muffetts Revenge is
a wet and forget product. Youhear me talk about wet and forget products
all the time, and I'll tellyou what, you have the easiest products
in the world to use. There'sno question about that. Yeah, I

(25:57):
mean that is the goal with ourbrand is to create products number one that
work really well, so we puta lot of active ingredient in them,
and then number two, make iteasy for the consumer. So you know,
we're really trying to take any ofthose tasks around the house and simplify
them to the best of our ability. Well, the nice thing about it,

(26:18):
I'm hearing you talk about this,I'm thinking, well, that's good
because it looks like I don't haveto climb up on any ladders with a
ten foot spray the bottle itself. How much coverage does this, you know,
take take an account for if youhave like a ranch style home,
you can get a full perimeter sprayof that. It's a sixty four ONNS

(26:40):
bottle, so it's a pretty bigbottle, so you get a lot of
coverage. And that's another thing thatwe work on with all of our products
is making sure you're not having tobuy a you know a ton of products.
So when you go in and youbuy a bottle, you're going to
be able to usually get the jobdone. So we're probably be spraying on

(27:00):
multiple things. You be spraying onwood, aluminum, vinyl, glass,
no staining, no problems, anyprecautions we need to take with the miss
muffets revenge. No, I justkeep your pets and people away from it
until it dries. But that's prettymuch all you need to do. If

(27:22):
you get you know some if younotice some residue, it's water soluble,
so you just can rinse it off. If you notice it, you know
that you got overspray. The windpicks it up and carries it somewhere you
don't want it, so it's reallyeasy to clean up if that happens,
a lot of different types of spiders. A lot of people are freaked out
by spiders. Does it take careof all the different species? It takes

(27:45):
care of most like brown recluse. It doesn't do that. You couldn't get
to it anyway, right, Yeah, I know, right, but your
daddy long legs and you know yourgarden basic garden spiders and things are anything
that you know coming up close tothe house. I would think your daddy
long leg is probably your most prolificspider that you're going to find outside.

(28:07):
They're a good spider, but they'renot good when they start messing up your
house, right exactly. That's whatI have noticed is they come indoors,
right and I find them a lotin the basements. You know. Good,
Well, that's where's Miss Meffitt's Revengeavailable? Where can I have picked
that up? A lot of hardwarestores carrying that now, they'll carry a

(28:30):
lot of them. Have it onlineso you can do your ace. Amazon
has it. We saw quite abit through there, so if you just
hit our store locatoritforget dot com,you can definitely find it quicker. But
again, yeah, you can definitelyget it online at the different places.
So how is the mold and mildewissues outside the house. We've had a

(28:52):
crazy year of weather. I thinkwe've had a lot of heat, had
a lot of moisture. We've hada lot of mildew. Have we not
right that? You know? Ithas been the perfect storm for black and
green stains? Definitely? So yep, I tell people. Now is a
really good time to get out andspray all those different spots that you have
around the house, all the greenand black stains. You'll get those to

(29:15):
clean up really quick. Since we'vehad rain, you can see those clean
up, but like in a weekwow, and sometimes just a couple of
days if you have some pretty goodrains. The black stains will take a
little bit longer for you to youknow, to clean up. But now's
a great time to get it onthere. That way it's ready for winter.
It cleans up, you know, all winter long, especially if you
have some areas where you've had stainson for years and years and years.

(29:40):
It'll it'll totally take care of thatover the next few months. Any limitations
tersa on temperature. I know we'vetalked a lot about that today during the
show, did you Yeah, absolutelyso with our hose end product, what
you want to do is you wantto make sure it's you know, fifty
degrees at least, so that's nota problem. That's not a problem.
No. So, and then whatI tell people is just to make sure

(30:03):
if you're doing say your roof, the best time to do it is in
the morning. Worst that roof ishead. Yeah, it's had all evening
to kind of cool down, becausewhat we don't want to have happen is
have it evaporate as quickly as ithits that surface. We wanted to have
some time sitting on the service. So this time of year, just make
sure, like if you want toget up in the morning, spray it

(30:25):
down and make sure you do areally nice coverage. And again, our
products, it's up to like twothousand square foot in that hose and bottle,
which if you go out there andyou compare what's out on the market
right now, a lot of theseproducts are giving me a three to eight
hundred square feet in a bottle. So, like I said, we really
work hard to make sure we giveyou plenty of product so you get all

(30:45):
the coverage that you need so youcan get the job done. So anyway,
so just do a good coverage andyou're good to go. And that's
really the only thing. With thetemperature. We're talking about all kinds of
wet and forget products, including themiss Muffets Revenge, which very timely.
Now well all of them are timely, because the one we haven't talked about
is the wet and forget shower. And I still continue to use it every

(31:11):
week. And it is amazing withall the subway town, different groutings and
a shower in many of the homes, and we were scrubbing this thing down,
like every week we start using awet and forget shower and spray and
forget it. You do it reallyagain. It just makes that job so
easy for people. You know,we're busy, we're out, we're you

(31:33):
know, we're running around at thistime of year. A lot of you
know, parents are doing you know, ball tournaments and different things with the
kids. You got your summer activities. It's so nice because just once a
week, all you have to dois you go into the bathroom, spray
everything down after you've all showered forthe day, leave it the next day,
come back, rents it down andyou are done and you don't have

(31:53):
to think about it again for anotherweek. And yeah, and even with
the amount of humidity, just controllinghumidity inside our homes in the summertime,
it's tough. And with the showers, they're prone to become more mildew in
the showers, and even with thefans, it's hard to just keep that
humidity in that food source and balanceand again the wedd and forget shower all

(32:16):
over it. I mean, sprayit ours is Sunday night, spray it
down Monday morning, quick rints withthe shower, and you're ready to go
for another week. You are, absolutely it. Just it really takes what
I was reading something you said, that's one of the most dreaded jobs in
America. For like, I agree, So I'm like, yeah, this

(32:37):
takes care of it, and youcould just check it off your list without
much thought. Yeah, I've gotany deal deals on the wedd and Forget
shop. Actually we do. Weactually for Prime Day, we have fifteen
percent off coming up for the indoorproduct and then we have twenty percent off
for the refill And I really encouragepeople to grab that. You feel you

Regarding your home projects, our phonenumber eight hundred eight two three eight two
five five, just kind of takinga look at some of the things around
your home, make it more energyefficient, make your home a little more
comfortable, but also when something needsyour attention. And I know a lot

(37:19):
of us have brick homes. Wehave masonry in the garage, we have
masonry in the basement. On falls. And if you're seeing an issue with
almost like salt crystals on the surfaceof brick or concrete block or a concrete
foundation, you've probably seen it inthe past. It almost looks like just

(37:45):
a crystal that's kind of growing onthe surface of that. It's kind of
chalky too, it's kind of almostlooks like salt, and you could brush
it off a little bit. That'scalled efflorescence. And efflorescence is a sign
of that masonry surface being in contactwith moisture regularly, regularly and never really

(38:12):
super dries out. It is thelime, It is the salts in the
concrete itself that when it is repeatedlywet and stays wet for a period of
time, therese that lime and thatsalt. Literally, I use the word
blooms. It begins to bloom, and it's a slow process and really once

(38:34):
it's kind of started, it's reallyhard to ever stop it. You can
clean it and it's you know, certainly unsightly, but it's also in a
lot of cases it's a it's anews release for you, like, hey,
pal, we got a problem here. For instance, We'll take this
because it just kind of ran intoit with a friend of mine. There

(38:55):
was nice house, nice chimney, nice our place and everything, and he
had noticed that maybe the top ofthe brick of the chimney was having and
around the mortar joints was having awhitish discolorization. And he didn't get up
on the roof. He had hisbinocular as he kind of zoomed in and

(39:17):
he was, you know, kindof figuring out that it was some kind
of staining or something along those lines. Finally he took a picture of it
on his phone and kind of blewit up and he was shown me.
I said, oh, that's efflorescence. I said, you got you got
a problem with that chimney, orthere's a good chance you got a problem

(39:37):
with that chimneys. Well, whatare you talking about? And I said,
well, you know, explained whatefflorescence is. And there was a
lot of mortar and there's also rightat the top of that chimney there is
what they call crown wash. It'slike a slab of concrete kind of pulls
the liner and the brick together, and like your sidewalk or your front porch

(40:01):
or your driveway, it can beprone to cracks, to spawling where the
surface kind of pops off, andas if it's a crack, as that
water gets down in between the linerand the brick, where you kind of
gambling a little bit, especially ifyou live in an area where you a

(40:24):
lot of freeze fall to having problemswith the liner in the chimney, which
can be expensive. We'll get tothat in a minute. But that efflorescence
on the outside is really a signalto you that you got something going on.
What could it be, Well, can certainly be missing mortar up there.

(40:46):
Maybe that chimney's been there thirty fiveyears and the mortar's cracked, it's
got water in it, it froze, it cracks it more, you know
what I'm speaking of, And itdoesn't take much of a crack, or
maybe some of the mortars that actuallyfalling out and you can get your finger
into it and you get a harddriving rain. Water gets down in there

(41:06):
and it continues and continues and continues, effluorescence starts on the outside of the
chimney, so it's telling you there'sa problem. The other thing is,
again just as I described, acrack and the crown washed water is getting
down, soaking the brick from thebackside, and eventually that efflorescence blooms on
the outside of the chimney. Itcould be that the brick itself is just

(41:30):
absorbing a lot of water and maybeyou had a lot of rain over the
years and that certainly could cause theefflorescence also, so you know, when
you see that, it's unsightly, but it's really not the problem. I
mean, you got to find outwhat the source of that problem really is

(41:52):
or it can get worse. Obviously, if we get it wet and we
go through free stall cycles, wecould have other problems from brickset crack,
to mortar that missing, to linerthat gets damaged. So you gotta find
the source. So how do youfind the source, Well, you or
someone gets on that roof and yougot to do, you know, fairly

(42:14):
thorough inspection. If you're going tohave someone do that for you, recommend
us CSIA certified chimney sweep is whatis a national certification, and they can
tell you what's going on. Ifit's a cracked crownwash. In some cases
they'll need to tear that off andyou'll need to put a new crown wash.

(42:36):
Sometimes, depending on the severity ofthe issue, you can get by
with using a little silver cone oryour thing caught and fill that crack.
And then there is a crown washcelant which is fairly thick, not quite

(42:58):
as thick as like a vasoline, but semi to that. Almost like a
pancake batter would be a better analogy. It's gray in color. You put
some duct tape along the top rowof the chimney itself so it extends up
over the crown wash, and thenyou can get a paintbrush or trough and

(43:20):
put that crown wash on that surfaceceiling not all up. Now, in
some cases you won't be able todo that, but in some cases you
can. As far as the mortar, you can do a little tough pointing
with a mortar patch. You coulduse zip it mortar, which is very
easy to use. That's a quickcreek product. And if it is a
need ceiling waterproofing is a better word. It's got to be a breathable waterproofing

(43:45):
finish. So that's how you wouldaddress that. If you get a pro
in there, just make sure there'sCSIA certified from the Chimney Sweep Institute of
America. So very very important andgood time to work on those chimneys is
not November. It's like right now. Hey. One of my favorite products,
