And we thank them for sponsoring this hour of the show.
And let me give you the phone number if you've
got a question to ask regarding your home. It's eight
hundred eight two three eight two five five and Charlie,
thanks for holding on.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Oh Gary, Yes, sir, I was wondering, what is that, Zach.
Purpose of the little granules on the roof shingles?
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Good question, So, to be honest with you, that's one
of the most important things on your shingles. What that
does is it is a its protection for the actual
shingle itself. So what really Obviously hail and wind are
damaging the roofs, but next to that is the sun,
(01:49):
the ultravolet rays of the sun, so that is kind
of a radiant barrier for the shingle, if you will,
reflects the heat back off and also protects the shingle
from drying out. Once it starts drying out and getting old,
it's when you start finding a lot of that granular
(02:10):
product down in your gutters. It's a sign that the
roof is beginning to fail. Now, you'll always get some
granular uh, sand and stuff in the gutter, So don't pantic.
It's got to be you know, if you start seeing
it increasing, or if you're on the ground with binoculars
and you're seeing bald spots on that shingle, you might
(02:33):
want to have the roof inspected and you see where
you are in terms of the longevity of the roof.
But it is a it's a protection device as a
protection product on the shingle itself.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
All right. I'm I got a small section of a
flat roof about.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Slope uh huh, and I.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Was going to put a seiler on it, and I
was thinking maybe throw a little bit of sand lightly
on there to just give more protection.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
I don't know about that.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
I don't know like a stop gap. I know it's
just a stop gap till I can get to the roof.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
De Yeah, what kind of seiler are you going to
put on there?
Speaker 2 (03:13):
I know, what do you? What do you recommend?
Speaker 1 (03:16):
Well, you know, I do you were you thinking when
you said seiler? I was thinking like a clear seiler.
There is a commercially applied product that is designed to
do just that. It's called roof Max. It is a
clear ceilingt that. What it does is it slows down
(03:39):
the degrading of that protective surface. But it's professionally applied.
If you're looking for a roof protectant, there's different products
like snow roof and things like that that come in
white and black.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
UH.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
They have their own UV protectant. They're usually used on
flat roofs or rolled roofing. But I I would take
a look at those products if you're going to do
it yourself.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah, it's just a small area and I don't want
to take I don't want to work on that roof
this year and I'll just get it done next year.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Yeah. So there, it's called roof coatings and you can
get it an aluminum black and UH and white. Usually
they are sold by you know, a one year guarantee,
a two year guarantee, of five year guarantee, of seven
year guarantee. Awesome, thanks all right, very good, thanks, good
(04:44):
luck you bet Charlie. All right, then let's go to Gary. Gary. Welcome, Jerry.
Thank you.
Speaker 5 (04:52):
Uh the first time that I've ever called into any show,
but well, thank you. I enjoyed this show. Questions concerning
the wonderful product.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Of wet and forget, which I've.
Speaker 6 (05:05):
Boozed around the house. I live in a house built
in the eighteen hundreds, and steps and sidewalks and stuff
like that. Oh gosh, the wet and forget is great stuff.
It's time to repaint the siding, and it's the asbestos
(05:26):
type shingles. And of course they, especially on the north side,
they have a green cast or getting the mold that going.
So I know the wet and forget will will eliminate that,
it will the green will disappear. But I'm curious about
(05:47):
the timeline sort of how long and then once that
mold mildew stuff is dead, should I power wash it
off before I actually painted, So I'm not painting over
a residue.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
No, in this particular case, the timeline is that's probably
the trickiest one to call wetting forgets as six weeks
I've used it and it's happened in four weeks. And
I've used it and it's happened in eight weeks. So
(06:27):
it works in conjunction with the rain, which shouldn't be
a problem this year, and the sun. And we've had
one of those weird years. We have plenty of sun
during the day and then we had the showers at night,
so it should be pretty active. It should be gone
in six weeks. You would also apply it not at
(06:49):
three o'clock in the afternoon when the sun's out. I'd
probably do it early evening when it starts cooling off
and it's not intense, or early morning and you spray
it on literally you forget it. I mean it is
wet and forget The residue will be a little sticky
(07:10):
if you really went up and you know, wet your
fingers and put your fingers on it in the first
week or two to be a little sticky. But by
the time that mold and mildew disappear, I you know,
you might want to wash it down because there could
be some dirt left. But I wouldn't wash it down
(07:32):
to get off any residue. I would, you know, again,
preparation's the key. So good bondable surface. But you wouldn't
really be washing it down because of the wet and forget.
You would be washing it down just to get any
dust and any anything off that surface. So typical washing
it down, powerwash, whatever, hose, big truck, brush cleaner or
(07:56):
something like that, right, you know.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
I think a brush might be might be appropriate too.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
Yeah yeah, so just just clean, clean surface and uh
paint away. And especially when you got the uh asbestos sighting,
we don't want to get too aggressive with a pressure
washer anyway, right right exactly.
Speaker 7 (08:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (08:19):
I've I've repainted it probably I don't know, ten twelve
years ago. And that was before I knew anything about
wet and forget. So I get bleached everything, real heavy
duty bleach and then painted.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
It and I got good ten twelve years.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
Out a bit. And uh but you know, I can
see the green coming back and.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
Right it's outside again. Yeah, it's outside. It's always going
to come back.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
Right right exactly, especially on the north side, but right
for sure, big difference. This is a three story house.
So okay, the north side got a lot of shade.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Yeah yeah, yeah, well get that get that thing. Uh
I mean, you can get that green off there and
then just uh you know, I wouldn't worry about scrubbing
real super hard. But let's get any uh and any
any dust or anything that could be on there. Let's
get it as clean as as we can. But again
I wouldn't. I wouldn't uh you know, beat myself up
(09:24):
too bad. It's going to uh certainly kill the the
mildew and the mold and it'll it'll look great. I mean,
it does a really good job, but I would definitely
hose it down.
Speaker 5 (09:38):
Okay, all right, Gary, keep up the good work.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
Love the show.
Speaker 1 (09:42):

home today and projects you might entertain at You might think, well,
I gotta get that taken care of, so Thurman welcome.
Speaker 9 (12:59):
Oh yes, I have a basement door and there's a
threshold down there that's been there for centuries. I guess
it's very weathered. You know, there's lots of streaks and
so forth, but it's it's it's structurally okay. So I
figure rather than going through the difficulty replacing it, that
(13:19):
might apply some kind of look, you know, oil based
of some sort to fill up all those holes, and
then after that driveshaps some sort of a you know,
oil based covering to keep keep the water out. Maybe
it'll be good for another ten years. There's just one
of what kind of stuff I might fill it with.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
Well, so help me with this. The threshold. Is it
made of wood? Yes, okay, and it's mounted on a
concrete slab.
Speaker 9 (13:51):
Well, it's hard to say what's under, but it's pretty
pretty well fixed in there. It's very it's quite you know,
there's nothing wrong structurally wrong with it. It's followed in front.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
So what is the seal? Is it a piece of
brass or is it a vinyl or what's that door
closing onto.
Speaker 9 (14:09):
Oh well, I never thought about that. It just it
just it covers the silk. So I guess it's.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
Probably asked something along those lines. Well, just double check
make sure that seals in good shape. So the so
your question really is with a wood threshold, it's deteriorating
on the surface a little bit, the woods becoming.
Speaker 9 (14:34):
Marked a lot of streaks.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
What do you mean by streaks?
Speaker 9 (14:40):
Oh well, I mean there a horizontal GIRs.
Speaker 1 (14:44):
Okay, the weather not okay, all right, So what I
would use is I would use a wood epoxy to
fill that up. So obviously you're going to have to
uh clean that or sand that maybe with a fine
type of sandpaper or a sanding sponge medium fine, and
(15:07):
just you know, take care of that, finish that if
there's anything left, and also take care of the dirt
and also try to smooth it out, and then take
a wood epoxy. It's called wood apox. It's made by Abatron.
It's it's it's it's a it's a very superior epoxy
(15:30):
wood filler that will do cracks, crevices, holes, anything along
those lines. And once that's supply, just make sure you
know it's nice and smooth. So when it dries it
is sandable. You could give it a light standing with
some fine sandpaper, make it nice and smooth, and then
it's I don't know what whether you can get oil
(15:54):
based paints in Massachusetts or not.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Yeah, but only in Court or cam Well.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
You won't need any more than that, will you. Yeah,
So a good good enamel oil based paint would be fine.
You can pick them up at Sherwin Williams or be
Ben Moore, any of those are very our home depots.
Their bear products are very good also for folks listening.
(16:21):
If you are not able to purchase oil based paints.
Sherwin Williams makes a euthane trimm enamel which will substitute
for that oil very very well. So that's how i'd
repair a Thurman. And you know it's a very very
hard finish and you should be good. You won't have
(16:42):
to tear that thing out.
Speaker 9 (16:44):
Oh great, that's what I was coming for. Thanks so much.
Speaker 1 (16:47):
All right, you're quite welcome. Thank you all right, and
Barbara welcome.
Speaker 4 (16:53):
Thank you Gary for taking my question. Is there a
product that will take rug backing off from a hardwood floor?
Speaker 1 (17:04):
The rug backing off a hardwood floor. So is this
a spongebacking?
Speaker 4 (17:10):
I'm really not sure what it was. It's been down
there for years, right, And my granddaughter just bought a house,
and you know, when they took that rug off and
saw the hardwood underneath it, they thought, oh no, because
it looks like it's got some waffling and and they
just didn't know how to get that off.
Speaker 1 (17:32):
Well, I'm you know, on the back of a rug,
they either use like a foam or a rubber or
a jute like string type. So I'm guessing it's a
foam and it's it can be difficult, obviously, you can
chemically remove that or you can mechanically remove it. So mechanically,
(17:56):
are they going to use the hardwood floor? Yes, so
they're going to want to refinish that whole hardwood floor then, correct, Yes,
so they're gonna have to sand that hardwood floor anyway.
So there are there are different hardwood floors that actually
you can use like a screen that will just chew
(18:19):
that up or sanding that up. I mean, it's it's
it's a project, okay, so you know that that's probably
gonna be the best way to do it. You can try.
There's different adhesive. You know, if it was on concrete,
i'd tell you to use hot water. Hot water breaks
it down. But it's a wood floor. I don't think
(18:41):
we should use hot water. I think, really I would
just try to scrape as much off of that as
I can before I would sand it, and then sand
your hardwood floor down for restaining.
Speaker 4 (18:57):
Okay, they were kind of concerned about using a sander
on it. They didn't know if it would chew the
floor up or not.
Speaker 1 (19:07):
Well, it's hard for me to say because I don't
know how thick it is and everything else, So let
me be as specific as I can. I think what
I would do is get a floor scraper and get
the thickness of that foam off the best I can.
You want to get it where it's just a thin,
you know, very thin, and then doing a two step
(19:29):
standing process will not only eliminate the rest of the phone,
but also stand the floor down. All right, I hope
that helps. We'll continue. We're going to talk about stripping
furniture at home with Gary Sullivan.
Speaker 8 (19:44):
It's the weekend and you have fixed questions. Get Gary

(22:39):
looking forward to this conversation and it's about your home.
You know, one of the projects I know many of
us get into is stripping paint and whether it's a
piece of furniture, whether it's old doors and boy, if
you're up to speed on home improvement, you know that
category has been through a big time transition. We used
(23:04):
to use methylne chloride strippers, which you know back in
my day, that's what you use to strip furniture. But
that whole world has changed a little bit. And to
help us with that is Adam Smith. He is with
DuMond Global and Adam welcome that home with Gary Sullivan.
Speaker 7 (23:21):
Thanks Gary, great to be back on with you.
Speaker 1 (23:24):
So stripping compounds for coatings has why don't you just
tell everybody just about that whole transition that's taken place
in the last twenty years.
Speaker 7 (23:34):
Sure, over the years, like you mentioned methylene chloride, there's
some pretty heavy duty chemicals that are very harmful to you,
harmful to the environment. And Dumand has been in business
for over forty years and we've always been a water
based pain remover, paint stripper product. Okay, so you don't
use those harsh methylene chlorides and MP's in any of
(23:57):
our products. So we started being the safer movement many
years ago to make furniture stripping or stripping doors there
any restoration project easier and safer.
Speaker 1 (24:11):
So, I mean, let's face it, you folks are really
the leaders in this kind of stuff. You've done some
landmarks throughout the world.
Speaker 7 (24:20):
Yes we have. Yes, we were working on the Eiffel Tower.
We've done the Brooklyn Bridge, the US capital dum, you know,
the world famous Hollywood sign. And one that we're really
proud of is the USS Casts and Young in Boston Harbor,
which is a group of Navy veterans that are volunteering
to care and maintain the cast and Young. So then
we're really proud of that that they're using our product there.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
Well, gee, Adam, all I need is a dresser strip.
Speaker 7 (24:47):
Well, not a problem. So one thing to be let
to understand, not every codeing's the same. They have inherited
a piece of furniture from a family member, you don't
really know what's on or the coatings that are there.
They could be fifty years old, it could be one
hundred years old, it could be fifteen years old. And
using one paint stripper to do everything is it is
(25:10):
probably not the best idea. So if you've purchased something
in your house back in nineteen ninety five and you
want to strip your cabinets using our Smart Stripped Advance
or Smart Strip Pro will probably do the job for
you quite easily. But if you picked up that piece
of furniture on the side of the road and you
want to refinish it and you're not sure, we have
(25:31):
what we call a test kit, so it has three
products in there. You test it on the surface that
you want to strip, and they'll tell you the right
product to use. So if it's older than nineteen seventy
eight when they outlawed lead based paint, sure you may
want to use our Feelaway product. Okay, so that'll remove
up to thirty layers of paint works one if it
(25:54):
gets right down to the wood. And the nice thing
is this cleanup is just with water with all of
our products, and so if you have something newer when
you do the test strip, you'd want to check out.
Either it's the Smart Strip Pro, which is really good
for dual part of Poxy's powder coded surfaces and things
like that, and or our Smart strip Pro our Smart
(26:15):
stript Advance, which is probably one of the one of
the staple ones in the marketplace.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
Okay, well this brings up a good point too. Not
to confuse people, but if you have a dresser and
it's been painted and you go by XYZ stripper and
it doesn't work, it may be that that particular manufacturer
doesn't have strippers that will work on that coding. And
(26:41):
you do. I mean, you have even test kits to
identify the exact coating and what will remove it. But
the go to product for newer codings is the Smart
Strip Advanced you say, advance or.
Speaker 7 (26:56):
The Smart Strip Pro. Okay, either of those two will work.
The Smart Strip Pro will work on more of your
advanced codings. What Smart Strip Advance is for regular water
based codings that you're going to find a cr based
paints and things like that in the marketplace.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
All right, well, let me kind of paint a picture
and you help me. Okay, so I got a dresser.
Speaker 7 (27:17):
I'll help you strip it.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
Yeah, help me do this. It's been in the family,
maybe just a generation, so it's probably thirty forty years
old maybe, And I don't know whether it's latex on there.
I don't know if it's just an oil based paint.
And you know I'm going to do it in January,
so you know, I kind of can't do it outside.
(27:40):
Maybe I could do it in the garage. May I
could do it in the basement. Maybe I could just
put some plastic and put leave it where it is.
Help me with that.
Speaker 7 (27:50):
So first thing, I'd recommend that you really don't know
what's on there. I recommend getting the test kit online.
Testing it first, see which is the right product for you. Okay,
only for a couple of generations. You may lend towards
the Peel the Way product, which is really good for
your organics like lead based paints and things like that. Okay,
(28:12):
you're gonna apply it. You can use this indoors or outdoors.
You're gonna apply it. You're gonna use our paper over
the top of it, okay. And what that does it
helps keep the product adhere to the surface. It keeps
it moist so it continues to work. So if you
have many layers, it's gonna take some time to come off,
so you want that paper there to keep it, keep
it moist, and then when you're ready to remove it,
(28:34):
it helps catch and capture what you're scraping off that surface.
Speaker 9 (28:39):
Okay.
Speaker 7 (28:39):
And then you're gonna come back with you. If you're
doing a dresser, probably a little squirt bottle with a
little scoalaring pad to get any residual. And that's really
all you have to do with our products. And if
it's a newer dresser and you're gonna use one of
the other gel strippers like smart sterript Pro or smart
Sterrup Advance, it's really the same place you're going to
(29:00):
put it on. I always put on enough there you
don't want it to dry, and then you're going to
cover it. And then after that certain time you want
to take it off, you're just going to scrape it
off into the paper. So you don't have to scrape
it off into a pail or into a bucket. It's
going to be captured with that paper.
Speaker 1 (29:18):
So you helped me with this too. So a lot
of times I hear in my background of courses in
hardware stores and even ten years ago out here, I
bought that new stuff. And I'm not talking about your
brand in particular. There's a couple of brands out there
bought that new stuff. It don't work, it does work.
You got to have the right product right, correct, correct.
Speaker 7 (29:40):
And you know We've had people that have been using
peel Away since its inception and it's worked well for
them because they're in older cities and the chances of
removing lead based paints or organics is pretty high. But
what they're finding now is is they're not getting success
with the peel Away because it's think about it in
nineteen seventy eight, that's how many years ago, forty something
(30:04):
years ago, correct, and so anything that's a long time ago,
so it more than likely does have a water based,
acrylic based paint on there. So they're choosing the wrong product.
That goes back to again testing it to be sure,
because I don't want you to go out by one
of our products and not be happy with it. I'd
(30:26):
rather have you test find the right product and have
one of the success work because then you're going to
tell your neighbor, you're going to tell your friends about
how well these products work.
Speaker 1 (30:37):
So I guess we need to focus in on the
test kits for people know where to get that and
exactly how a test kit works, and the expense of
that can work me through.
Speaker 7 (30:49):
That test kit's going to range between fifteen and twenty dollars,
depending You can buy them online and what the test
kit consists of. It consists of a little court size
of each of our products. It's going to include little
scouring pads, a little trowel, gloves, the things that you
need to test, and the paper has instructions in there
(31:13):
how to use it properly. So you're going to do
a section of each one, come back after a certain
period of time, give it a little scrape and see
what it's doing, because in some cases it may work
very quickly. In other cases, where you have multiple layers
and layers and layers of paint, it's going to take
a little bit longer. So you can kind of judge
how long it's going to take, and then you can
(31:33):
figure out which is a proper product for you, because
at the end of the day, getting the jobs done
right the first time.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
I was just going to say, regardless of you know
how much time you have, you're going to narrow that
time down by testing it and making sure you got
the right stripper. And especially big projects. If you're talking
about stripping the doors in an old house, good chance
you'll need the peel away right number one correct, But
(32:05):
testing it if you just yeah, boy, I see, I
see where there's issues there and why people get a
little disgruntled, and so I'm not going to do that project.
But really it's just a matter of testing and finding
out exactly what's on there because the whole codings industry
has flip flopped in the last fifty years.
Speaker 7 (32:24):
That's that's correct. And you know the little story here, Gary,
we had somebody contact us. They bought one hundred and
ten year old farmhouse and they went online and found
pila A being great for removing older paints, and they
happened to call us and they ended up getting the
test kit. And again we're all pretty much convinced it's
going to be Pelaa because it's an old farmhouse, correct, right, Well,
(32:47):
she ended up doing the test kit. Come to find
out it was a smart strip Advanced was the right
product for her. So you don't really know. Put your
doors in that house in nineteen eighty three, you don't
know they were painted for the first time in nineteen
eightys you don't know. Again, that kind of goes back
to the testing, and again we were convinced it was Peloy,
(33:08):
but she proved this wrong with the test kit and
proved it was the smart strip Advance. It was the
bright product for so.
Speaker 1 (33:16):
You say online is that Dumontglobal dot Com is that
where you get to test kit correct.
Speaker 7 (33:21):
You can go to domand Global dot com. You can
just google it and find it on Amazon and other
places like that. Sherwin Williams is another opportunity for you.
You can talk to your local do It Best members

Speaker 1 (33:41):
So furniture refishing refinishing as a whole is I mean
there used to be a lot of that is. There's
still a lot of it.
Speaker 7 (33:50):
There, really is. I mean there's a category that I
find it's growing quite a bit. Especially you're getting second
generation kids are cleaning out their parents' house, right and
that dresser was theirs. Now they're selling it in the
garage sale or they're put in it on the street.
And you know, I see videos out there all the
time with people finding Ethan Allen furniture, really high end
(34:13):
furniture that's been painted over the generations, right, But there's
beautiful wood underneath there and just spectacular wood, and people
want to start protecting that. And we're finding also with
restoration projects and homes instead of tearing out all this
beautiful wood.
Speaker 1 (34:28):
And oh yeah, oh yeah, you can't place there.
Speaker 7 (34:32):
So yeah, you're getting this beautiful old growth wood. So
why destroy it when you can strip it, restain it
and just have a beautiful you know, make it look
like it did one hundred years ago.
Speaker 1 (34:44):
Boy, I agree with you one hundred percent. I kind
of involved it. Habitat Humanity and the restores. There's over
six hundred stores nationwide, and there's some beautiful furniture in
these stores sometimes that are donated and gorgeous stuff, which
brings me the next question. And we've been talking about
removing coatings, what about removing stain and you know, like
(35:05):
a wood dining room set. I mean, does that have
to be tested? Does it have to be stained or sand?
Speaker 7 (35:13):
Does it have to depend?
Speaker 1 (35:15):
Help me?
Speaker 7 (35:16):
It really just depends on what you're removing, okay, And
you know in some cases you're gonna have to do
some sandy okay to get down to where you want
to be. Uh. But again, at the end of the day,
when you test you get the right item to remove
what's on there, you should have been really good shape for.
Speaker 1 (35:34):
Success, Okay. All right. DuMond Global dot Com I trying
to think if I've missed any questions. But the bottom
line here is I think I think we need to test.
Speaker 9 (35:48):
Huh.
Speaker 7 (35:50):
We we do, and again we want you to be
happy with our You know, we live in a world
today that if you if you're not successful with something, no,
you may go online and people know it may not
be the right reason to let people know you're going

Speaker 1 (36:08):
Yeah, and like you said, you're picking up a high
end piece of furniture. It's worth fifteen bucks to get
the right stripper because you really got to find there.
I mean, you got you got a great of furniture.

I'm not going to use other brand names, but people
are like, I bought that data stripper and it don't work.
And years and years ago, gosh, thirty thirty five years ago,
(40:16):
I remember having the president of Demon Chemical on it
was called Demon Chemical now it's de Mon Global, and
we were talking about where they were going in the
whole covering removal business, and they're there now. But there's
a lot I mean, you get back on lead based paint,
(40:37):
buttermilk paint, yep, latex paints at Curly Paints. There's a
lot of different paints out there. And that peel a
way that he spoke of was one I was familiar
with removing lead based paints off walls. It'll removed like
thirty five coats, but you don't need that on a
dresser had just been painted ten years ago. Right, So
(40:58):
that test hits the key domond Global dot Com. All right,
let's get back to the phones. Everet Welcome, Good morning, Gary.
Speaker 3 (41:07):
Thanks for taking my call and I love the show,
Thank you, thank you. I wanted to get your opinion
on my brick fireplace, well, the chimney. A little quick
background here. The house is forty seven years old. We've
been here eighteen years, two story brick house. The chimney
comes up through the attached garage roof. And as you're
(41:31):
well aware, a couple of months ago here in Lexington
and Cincinnati, we had that monsoon for about a week.
And on about day five, I went out in the
garage and I saw the drywall ceiling was wet up
next to the chimney. So I got up in the
attic and that whole chimney, which is approximately five foot long,
(41:55):
two foot deep, it was soaking wet, every square inch
all the way to the immediate thought, oh yeah, from
the very where the chimney exited, the roof all the
way down to where it met the ceiling. My immediate
thought was, after listening to you over the years, is
that the brick got saturated and that's where my leak
(42:18):
is was. So I had a roofer come out. He said, well,
some of your flashing is loose on the room, and
I agreed, and they had a masonry division and he said,
your crown really needs to be replaced. And it's original
to the house, and it's it's got some cracks, but
(42:39):
they've been calked over the years. Here's where I'm had
a couple of masons out and then I had a
chimney company this last week. They came out to extensive
look around, took some nice pictures. They recommend to replace that.
I think it's called a wash.
Speaker 1 (42:57):
Crown crown wash, and yeah, I can almost tot you
that's where the problem is. Since it's from top to bottom,
we're going to be up against the clock. But since
it's from clock to bottom or top to bottom, the
crown wash is kind of like a block of sidewalk
on the top that ties your your interior chimney to
(43:21):
your brick, and it gets cracks and it gets parce
and that needs you know, sometimes you can seal it,
but it sounds like yours. It's just a tear raid.
And it's got to a point where that's why all
that brick's wet. You replace the crown wash. It might
need new flashing too.
Speaker 3 (43:39):
Well, here was the I agreed with all that, but
they also want nine to spray a protect the steelant
on the outside of the chimney.
Speaker 1 (43:50):
That just seemed well, it'll help, but you don't have
to have them do it. Maybe you could do that.
It's as well, that's what I was thinking. Yeah, it's
a breathable bricks. See. In fact, there's a company it's
called Chimney r X chimneyarx dot com. They have a
brick chimney sealer that is designed it's strictly for brick
(44:17):
on a chimney. It's breathable and that's probably what they're
going to use anyway. So you could do that part.
As far as the flashing that might need attention, and
the chimney company can do that. But as soon as
you start telling me the story, I'm thinking crown wash. Crownwash.
It's definitely a crown one. So if you've got a
(44:37):
follow up question. You can sit on hold. Daniel put
you on hold if I've answered your question. Thank you
very much for calling. We'll continue. You're at home with
Gary Sullivan.
Speaker 8 (45:05):
Takes it right with a call to Gary Sullivan at
one eight hundred eight two three talk.
