Speaker 1 (00:32):
Well, the weekends upon us. Welcome. You're at home with
Gary Salvin. And let me tell you who bringing us
this hour. One of my favorite products, it's awesome. Have
you heard me talk about that. If you have a
washer that just kind of has a smell to it,
or maybe a big garden tub and you start seeing
a little black flakes in the water, that's biofilm and
(00:54):
no bleach isn't gonna take care of that, but awesome will.
It's almost like a black jelly forms in a closed
plumbing system. Anyway, you can go to their website. You
can read about it. I have used it for my
washing machine multiple times. It's ahh some dot com. You
can see their full line of products right there, and
(01:14):
we thank them for sponsoring this hour of the show.
If you'd like to join us to do so, the
lines are open. Danny can take your calls and it's
eight hundred eight two three eight two five five. We've
been talking about different projects, maybe to stick your nose
in see if that's something you want to entertain before
(01:37):
colder weather sets in. It's coming, I promise you, and
especially in a lot of regions of our country. And
of course there's also summer projects, we've been talking about
wrapping up and there's still probably a good sixty days
to get those done. But one of the things we
(01:59):
were talking about was insulation and getting up in the
attic and actually measuring how much you have. And yes,
you can put insulation on top of insulation. We can
talk about that if you have a question about that.
But if you're living in a home and I kinda
I don't know how you can be affording to live
(02:21):
in a home that doesn't have insulation in the walls,
or you just got a couple of inches of insulation
in the attic, and I just want you to think
about this. I'm not here to sell insulation. I'm just here.
You're paying and I don't have a percentage, but you're
(02:44):
paying a lot more money than you need to be
paying to live comfortably in your home because you don't
have the insulation. So in a lot of cases, at
least the ones I've talked to different homeowners and companies
install insulation, that the money you're actually paying in access
to to live comfortably in your home can be paid
(03:09):
to the company that insulates homes, and your payback can
be between four and six years so you're not going
to save any money for four to six years, but
if you're going to be living in that house for
the next twenty twenty five years, or that's the plan,
I'd be getting my pencil sharpened and start trying to
(03:31):
figure out whether that's a good deal, and sounds like
to me it's kind of a no brainer. It has
added benefits also, and that is if you have a
house and I've been in several of these homes where
it was an older it was a big house. I
remember this one vividly. It was in a you know,
(03:56):
one of the older suburbs of the city, homes probably
built in the thirties, forties, fifties. I went in talking
to the homeowner before the job was being done, and
they were having insulating. They had a couple of inches
of insulation in the attic, which is nothing because where
(04:18):
I live, the R value in remodels is recommended by
the Department of Energy of an R forty two and
R nineteen in the walls, and they couldn't get an
R nineteen the walls, but they could get I think
it was up to about an R nine. But it
also stopped the drafts because they used the foam, and
(04:41):
that project was done later in the day and I
went back and when I walked into that home, it's
the truth. It sounded different. It was so quiet, and
they lived on kind of a busy road. So that's
an added benefit too. If you live near a busy
(05:02):
road and there's no insulation in the walls and you
get the foam insulation in the walls, pay back again
four or five, six years, but the sound is certainly deadened.
And boy when you start, when you hit that, it's
like pain for daycare. Right, you get that four years
(05:24):
in there, it's like getting a raise because that energy
costs will drop right away and that money can be
diverted from the energy company to the insulating company. But
that's all going to go away in like four years.
So just something to consider. And again, if your home's
(05:47):
built after seventy seven seventy eight, you probably got some
insulation in the walls. That foam can be also installed
in those walls. If there is insulation and kind of
crushes it together, probably not as necessary, but I'll let
(06:08):
you decide that. And the way they do it is
they'll basically drill into those walls from the outside of
your home. You got sighting, they'll pop that siding off
if it's a vinyl or aluminum or steel. If it's brick,
they'll go into the mortar and they'll fill those cavities
(06:28):
with foam. And like I said, what a difference it
makes and paybacks impressive. And they've been doing that in
different parts of the country for twenty twenty five years.
I knew it was a really big deal when I
was at the International Builder Show probably about five years
ago in dow was then selling machines for contractors that
(06:55):
were home builders to do their own foam insulation and instruction.
And my daughter in Charlotte when she bought an older
home and she basically took a lot of that home
(07:16):
down to the foundation and rebuilt. It's a beautiful home.
And she was asking me, she was, boy, our contractor
was really pushing me on getting foam insulation, and you know,
it's an extra three thousand bucks and blah blah blah,
and I'm going do it. Do it. And I know
(07:37):
you're you're dealing with the heat, but do it. It's
you know, it's so so much more superior. The r
value per inch of thickness and now's the time to
do it. You've got this new construction virtually and many
(07:57):
times over the last thing. She probably had that done
five years ago. Over the last five years, shis, I'm
so glad that we ended up doing that. It makes
such a difference because there's a lot of homes being
in that area of the country being torn down and
rebuilds or totally remodeled older homes. And some of her
(08:22):
friends did, some of her friends didn't, and she was,
you can tell the difference, and yeah, yeah, So I
don't know if this is the year for it, but
it might be. Do the math and uh. We're also
seeing trends with foam doing whole house encapsulations, and I
(08:44):
think that probably depends on where you live. Kind of
started growing out of the southeast. You see it in
pretty much a lot of parts of the country, some
much heavier than others, where they're actually taking the insulation
all off the floor of the attic in encapsulating the attic,
the underside of the roofs, the sides of the attic,
(09:06):
closing up the vents that we just spent all this
time talking about ventilation, ventilation, ventilation, But if you got
an air handler up in the attic. It seems to
be that seems to be the tipping point of maybe
that is a good idea, But they let that just
become a encapsulated part of the house, insulated and you
(09:29):
don't need it on the floor. Just let the heat
rise into that attic. And you got it like that.
So anyway, let me give you the phone number. You're
more than happy to grab a line, and I hope
you're happy to grab a line. Danny's happy to take it.
It's eight hundred eight two three eight two five five.
Happy to talk about your project or maybe a little

(12:35):
All right, you're at home with Gary Solvent, and back
to work we go. Frank, Welcome morning, Gary morning.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
I have a problem with the insulation and a squirrel
or raccoon there that's been getting in the roof of
the house and I'm reroofing the whole back of the
house for you, and I'm wondering, and they destroyed the insulation.
So I'll just the vibe. It's all crunched up ino
like little pellets almost. I'm saying, is there anything I
(13:06):
can do to put in there? I'm afraid, you know,
the squirrel seems like he wants to come back every year.
And the patches that roof before, you know. And so
now I'm gonna put plywood, new plywood down for sheeeson
instead of the old boards that used to have space.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Right, I'm wondering.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
If there's anything I can keep them from trying to
get back in there.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
Well, we talked about this a lot, Frank, and it's
a problem in all areas of the country, not just
squirrels and raccoons bats, and the squirrels and raccoons are
probably the more devious. But what you're doing is what
you can do. I mean, there's no miracle of keeping
(13:50):
them out of the house. It's observation and more importantly,
it's maintenance. In fact, one of the things I'm starting
to see is insurance up knees would pretty much cover
that unless there is a writer that you have to have,
and somebody didn't take the writer on wildlife. And but
now they're they're they're looking and said that those animals
(14:13):
couldn't get in there if there wasn't a problem. So
it's a maintenance issue and we don't cover it. They're
not all doing that. I'm just seeing some some cases
of them doing that. So the way squirrels and raccoons
love to enter a house, and maybe they do enter
your house this way, or maybe it is just the
(14:34):
boards and not the plywood on the roofing if if
that's where they're getting in. But if you start noticing
squirrels always on the ridge of the roof running back
and forth, it may be because that ridge vent is
not properly fan fastened and they're actually lifting that up
(14:55):
and that's how they're getting in. If it's down by
the down spouts or the gutters where the facia board
meets maybe you know, through expansion and contraction and moisture
and heat, there gets to be a gap at that
mortar joint that isn't caught and they get their claws
(15:16):
in there and they can they can literally open up
that board and get into the house and then they
you know, that's their living quarters and that insulation gets
kicked around and soiled, and you know, it's a big
process of getting those animals out getting that all cleaned
up and getting it repaired. So you know, I paying
(15:37):
attention of possibly. I mean there's people that specialize in this,
you know, to uh get in there and do the
clean up and do the repair and do the trapping.
I mean, yeah, trying to trying to observe where they're
getting in and getting that corrected, I guess is the
short answer. Huh.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
Yeah, I'm a cop, and you know I've bill tous
and everything else. But like I got an a dormer
up on the roof and they actually went up and
tore the trim off the a doma where it intersects
with the roof and went through there, in other words,
pulled the molding off, right molding down on the driveway.
And I look up there. My house has two stories,
(16:18):
you know, and I look up there and sure enough
there they ripped the pot that the corners hold going
into the roof and went through and right in the
corner of the Adama there. They're amazing. I mean, they
just and they keep coming back like in the back
of the roof.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
Well, and then just another little tidbit too, is if
they nest in there for a year and nobody even knows.
They're nesting in there sometimes, and there is that scent
that they can pick up next year and they'll come back.
They'll come back. That's why it's important, really to get
(17:00):
all that cleaned up, sanitized. But I hear you. I'm
not saying, oh, your fault, you didn't have that molding
up there tight enough. They if there's a little gap,
they can they can pull that off. You're exactly right.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
Eighteen eighty three. The house is built, so I mean, yeah, yeah,
I hear you. They might have been living there before
I got here.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
They could have been. Yeah. I have a fellow on
Ron Krueger. He's out of the Akron, Ohio area. He's
got a company called uh A one Wildlife Control, and
I have him on as a guest several times a year.
He's fascinating. I mean, he knows the psychic of animals
and he just tells some horror stories of how animals
(17:46):
get into our homes. And you know, he does the
whole deal. He does the trapping, the repair, the sanitation
and everything else. And it's not for the faint of heart.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
I see him running around the trees and yeah, but
I never see him on the house and yeah, that's
me mad, you know what I mean? They can't.
Speaker 1 (18:07):
Yeah, I didn't realize what his last couple of times
I spoke to him on the air was. He would say,
you know, if you see squirrels just running along the
peak of the house all the time, he goes, I'm
telling you that that ridge event is going to be
a problem, if it's not already a problem. So I
(18:29):
know that's the best we can do, all right, Frank, Thanks,
take care, bye bye. Yeah. I don't know if there's
any quick answer, there's not. I know I'm always you know,
I'm always talking about maintenance of a home. And I
also know we all have, you know, lives, and some
of us are very we do our due diligence. We're
(18:55):
always looking forward and backwards and taking walks around at
home and looking for issues. And others were not that
parent right about it, and maybe we don't even know
what to look for. I use the phrase that if
it doesn't look right, it's not right, and start researching it,
(19:16):
all right. Yesterday I talk with Peter Dish. We talked
about old for mica countertops or old wood table and
putting a marble finish on or a granted finish. I
record it. We're gonna play that next as we continue.

Speaker 1 (22:30):
Good morning. We I was talking earlier. It's hard to believe,
but we'll be in the holiday season and no time
at all, and we've got everybody in the kitchen and
we'll be doing all this cooking. And yeah, and I
always talk about your coatings for countertops, and you can
(22:53):
make them look like marble. You can make him look
like granite. I think the original spreadstone it kind of
looks like a coreon. And people have been using these
products because I hear about them, and you're having a
contest right now, and people that have redone their countertops
tell me about that.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
Well, yeah, we are, and that's because we have built up,
you know, a long list of many, many thousands of
happy customers over the years. And you know, we said
to ourselves let's celebrate the fact that there are all
these happy folks out there, and let's get pictures of
their applications. Sure, so, you know, we'd love to see
(23:37):
pictures of your brand new kitchen with your new countertop.
The same goes for your brand new bathroom with your
new vanity or your cable. So we would love to
get some pictures. And we're having a contest where the
best photo of a kitchen renew with one of our
(24:00):
top kits, the winner of that will win a five
hundred dollars prize. Okay, and the same goes for if
you send us a photo of your bathroom renew with
one of our products, the winner of that will get
a five hundred dollars prize. And there are also two
runner up prizes of two hundred and fifty dollars of product.
(24:21):
So really, this is all about us just celebrating the
fact that there are lots of happy folks out there
and we'd love to see picks. I know we all
have busy lives, but if you got five minutes to
shoot us a few photos, you may be a winner.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
Yes, So before we get into the countertop kits, because
I do want to kind of you know, talk about
those too, because this is an ideal time of the
year to do that particular project. Is there a form
do we download the pictures? How do we do this?
Speaker 4 (24:51):
There is You just go on our website at the
ditsch Codings dot com and go to the countertop page
and there's a form there that you can get and
you can fill out. But from there it's just, you know,
send us a few picks of the the project that
you did, that you love, that you're proud of, and
(25:12):
we'd love to see them and will probably put them
into a gallery that will be there for everyone to
see because we want to share the fruits of you know,
our happy customers labor. So this we think is the
easiest way to do that.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
All right, So it's dice d A I C H.
I have to spell your name again, d A I
C H Coaties dot com.
Speaker 4 (25:32):
That's right, and you've been doing it a few times?
Speaker 1 (25:34):
It well, expert, do it really well?
Speaker 4 (25:37):
You do? You absolutely do?
Speaker 1 (25:39):
So you've really you sold thousands of these countertop kids,
have you?
Speaker 4 (25:43):
Not many many? And uh, you know very thankfully they're
very happy customers and you know that that that sort
of ties into the fact that now well in time
for upcoming hall season, Thanksgiving and everything else. We have
new versions of our lux Rock Kit, which will give
(26:07):
you a very very luxurious granite countertop with a beautiful sheen.
But now i'll roll on very very simple, far easier
than the original version. And also our Marble Dream Kit,
which is very easy to do, very very high sheen.
(26:28):
Some new additions to that kit, extremely easy to do.
You'll be stunned. So whether you're feeling is you want natural, polished,
beautiful granite or you want, you know, let's say, a beautiful,
bright white, you know, marble countertop, we've got you covered.
Speaker 1 (26:48):
Well, let's talk about that. So who do you think
the ideal customer is? Is it somebody that just has
a I'm going to use the word antiquated, but an older,
out of style countertop and says, hey, I don't want
to spend four thousand dollars five thousand dollars for a
granted counter top. Is there something I can do to
refinish yet? Is is that kind of the average customer
(27:12):
you think?
Speaker 4 (27:12):
Peter, that is exactly correct. You know, sometimes maybe you're
thinking you want to put a slab in, but maybe
you're not ready for it. Maybe your budget doesn't quite
make sense right now. Maybe something you want to put off,
well you don't really have to put it off, because
you can put something on that looks identical to the
real thing. But it costs you, you know, just a
(27:34):
couple hundred dollars as opposed to you know, many thousands
of dollars. And there's no mess, there's no there's no construction,
there's no carrying things out. You just use your existing surface.
You go right over it and boom. Within a couple
of days, you have a very serviceable surface that will
look amazing in your in your home, and you're good
to go.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
I'll tell you my sister used it. Took me about
three months to convince her it's not hard. And then
when she used it, I think she used to luxe rock.
That was the granite one.
Speaker 4 (28:06):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (28:07):
And I'll tell you.
Speaker 4 (28:08):
And now now it's all roll on. Now it's all
roll on. Well, let's geah and that's the thing.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
Yeah, So walk me through that project. I got an
old pink for micah countertop and I want it to
look like granted, how do I do that? Peter? And
you've made it easier for me.
Speaker 4 (28:25):
Yeah, Well, all you're going to do is you're going
to take that for mica countertop. You're going to clean it.
You're gonna wash it so it's good and clean, and
then you're just gonna roll on the different steps. So
there's a primer that goes on it grabs onto everything,
and then you put on your your stone two coats
of that very quick dry to use a roller.
Speaker 1 (28:46):
Okay, you're going to use a roller.
Speaker 4 (28:47):
You're not going to use a brush. Before you used
to use a brush. Now you just roll it on.
So it's it's really basically as simple and easy as
our original mineral select right, same idea, very very blingy,
really really pops, very luxurious appearance, nice highchene surface, looks
(29:10):
just like you paid, you know, many thousands of dollars
for a solid surface granite countertop. So basically you put
on your two coats of stone and then you basically
you polish it so you make it smooth, and then
you apply the clearcoats over that, and literally over a
(29:31):
weekend you go from you know, your old pink antiplated
surface to something that just looks exactly what you want
that will go with your cabinets. And everything else. And
it's a shocker. I mean you see a big difference.
Speaker 1 (29:44):
Yeah. So where you have like the bulls noose on
the countertop, where you kind of have a little rise
a curve, can you use a brush or can you
still use the roller there?
Speaker 4 (29:58):
You can use a brush. You can just follow it
with a roller. Just follow the contour with the roller.
It's extremely forgiving. It goes up your little backsplash. If
it's attached to the countertop, it just grabs onto everything.
And all you do at the end is you just
you polish it, You make it smooth, you put your
clear coats on, and you now officially have a real
(30:21):
stone surface that you now have on your countertop. You've
basically dressed it in a brand new look. And the
same goes for marble. So if marble is your thing,
super easy to do, very very fast, very fast rying
super high sheen surface. For all the world it will
look like your marble countertop, not something that anyone else has.
(30:45):
You did it yourself, and you'll be shocked at how
easy it is to do.
Speaker 1 (30:49):
Now on the marble, is that still all roll on
or does that take a little bit more artistic?
Speaker 4 (30:56):
No, we got rid of the artistic completely. There's no artistic. Basically,
you put this.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
On and.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
You know what, easy is nice and when it kind
of happens, it's great. Who wants to scratch your head
for the whole day? You know, you just I mean
some of us are very artistic, but I mean the
product itself, when you apply it, you'll sort of move
it around and it will kind of do its own
thing and you'll be pretty pretty happy with what you get.
(31:29):
And then now there's a very very high sheen clear
that will go over top of everything and give you
that brand new, sparkling, polished marble appearance. And it's all
going to be available basically now at the beginning of October,
so you're good in time for holiday season and you've
got whatever kind of look or feel that you want
(31:51):
for your home.
Speaker 1 (31:52):
There it is, Peter. I'm sure as people are listening
to us, they're going, yeah, right. And I know you
because your website, disce codings dot com, you got videos
of this, right, I mean, people can watch the project,
they can watch the application, they.
Speaker 4 (32:10):
Can and there's actually a new video that's going to
be out in the next ten days for the new
Marble Dream and yeah, it explains it so easily, and
I think you'll be looking at it and saying it
can't be this easy, but it really is.
Speaker 1 (32:29):
Yeah. Well, I'll tell you what the original mineral spreadstone
that was the first countertop kit you came out, and
I'd used that a couple of times and it was
so so easy, and I have not used a granted,
my sister did and she was that was before you
made it easier, and she was just going on about
(32:51):
how easy it was. So you've taken easy to a
new level. And then the marble that sounds I love
the look that marble countertop that is really sharp.
Speaker 4 (33:04):
Yeah, and and the actual components will really create the
look really for the most part for you. So there's
no there's no need to be super artistic with a
you know, with a fetther or any of this stuff.
I mean, it's not even necessary. But you'll think you
used the feather.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
So well that's the key. I mean. So, so where
do people buy and look at these countertop kids.
Speaker 4 (33:33):
Well, they can go to our website to look at
all the information and to get the contest info as
we discussed, but as well, it's available through well not
only US but through Lows and the Home Depot so
you can you can also shop there, uh and also
(33:54):
coming soon Amazon, so you're going to be able to
get you know, our products pretty well in anywhere. And
of course we are always there at the office to
answer your calls. Our support team will will will guide
you through whatever that you know you may may not
be sure about, sure, and we'll make sure that you're happy,
(34:16):
because that's our job. We want to we want to
make your project a good one.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
Yeah, I think one thing we before leaving each other,
we need to impress on one thing. This is not
a step stop gap measure. This is this is a project.
This isn't just a two year deal. The lifespan of
these countertop kits that we just spoke of, can you
(34:41):
give me how long they're gonna last?
Speaker 4 (34:44):
Permanent? I mean basically, you know, once that surface is on,
now you have two choices. You can either love it
and live with it for many years and it will
serve you. Maybe, you know, intermittently you may put a
fresh cre year on just sort of you know, jazz
it up a little bit. But we're talking after several
(35:04):
years and it'll take you an hour, right, But really,
you know, let's say, even down the road, you want
to just change the color. You've decided you want your
cabinets to be different. Well, now you want a new
color of countertop. Well that's an easy decision because now
you don't have to tear everything out and spend another
ten thousand dollars. You just you know, pick the color
(35:25):
and the look that you like. You do it, and
within a couple of days, you've got a brand new
look for your bathroom or your kitchen, or your table.
I always see tables. Yeah, yeah, people have done some
beautiful things with tables, but I mean it's a quick thing,
and you're right, it's not a stop gap. It'll last,
it'll be there for you. But the nice thing is
(35:45):
when you want to change the look, you can do
it in a weekend and boom, you've got another color
and you're good to go.
Speaker 1 (35:52):
All right, folks, check out these countertop kits that we
just spoke of its dice Coatings dot com. If you've
already accomplished a project, to tell me again, go to countertops,

a good thing.

them anywhere to share them. Yeah, it's like, come on,

It's eight hundred eight two three eight two five five
and uh let's go to Mike. Mike welcome. Oh already, yep,
just like that.
Speaker 5 (40:31):
Okay, Well, my toilet got clogged, so I was plunging
it and all of a sudden it was like the
the wax ring or something blue out and the waters
started leaking all over from the base. Uh huh, what
(40:52):
would the what is the plunger just caused too much
pressure in there too?
Speaker 1 (40:58):
You know, you know, I I would think, I mean,
if it's at the base, that would indicate that, you know,
it is the wax ring. There's nothing really else that's
going to go wrong there. I don't know whether it's
the pressure of the plump of the plunger. I quite
honestly have not ran into that where that was a problem.
(41:22):
The one thing that I'm thinking of is maybe the
screws that hold you know, go through the base of
the toilet and onto that metal ring were compromised, rusted,
and by plunging it just your force or leaning on
it or the force of the plumber plunger because of
(41:48):
the compromised bolts kind of holding it to that ring
snapped or broke, which would misalign it and the water
would go out between the toyilet base and the wax ring.
I can't say for sure, but where it's leaking it
(42:08):
would have to be the wax ring. And you know,
if you get down there and start trying to remove
the bolts and remove the toilet from the ring, you
may find out that was the case. But either or
you're going to have to certainly get that replaced because
that that ring is compromised. All right, Hope that helps,
(42:29):
And if you'd like to join us again, it's eight
hundred eight two three eight two five five as we
talk about home improvement, had one just throw this little
tidbit in before we take a break. Toilets that I
call them the phantom flush. You were sitting around and
watching TV or playing on your iPad, and also you
(42:52):
hear your toilet turn on and about ten seconds later
it turns off. What we had this call. Yes, that's
why top of mind. What it is is that water
down in the bowl or in the closet, i should say,
is leaking into the bowl because the flapper is worn
out and it's not setting properly on that outlet in
(43:16):
the closet. And to prove that that's the problem, just
take a little food coloring put it in the closet
of the toilet. So you use a little blue food coloring,
and all of a sudden, if there's blue in the bowl,
it's leaking, and that means that that flapper needs to
be replaced. All right, don't forget right now. Easy Breathe
