Speaker 1 (00:31):
All right, two weekends upon us Welcome. You're at home
with Gary Salvin. This that I was brought to you
by wed and Forget. Hey, listen, you got to try
the new wedd and Forget exterior window and screen cleaner.
It cleans the window through the screens and it also
cleans the screens. Now one bottle cleans up to thirty
six windows. You just wet the windows, spray on the product,
let it sit for a minute and rinse. It's got
(00:53):
the same great nozzle on the wed and Forget outdoor
so you can reach those second story windows without a ladder.
It's available at Low's Walmart Ace in BLAINEZ. We thank
them for sponsoring this hour of our show. And if
you'd like to join us, well, go ahead and grab
a line. It's eight hundred eight two three eight two
five five and Brian welcome.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Hey am I on, Yes, sir, Hey, Gary, thank you
for taking my call. I just I love to listen
to you guys on the weekends. You've got a great
humbleness in such a wide breath of knowledge. But I
just wanted to call. I don't really have a question.
I just wanted to offer some advice. Okay, I my
wife and I run a small beekeeping operation north of
(01:39):
Boston and this time of year I get calls for
wasps all the time. Was when they in August and
September are a real nuisance, and I just thought you
would benefit from, like if you have any questions about
how to get rid of them, or or if you're
listeners find similar problems.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Well, we always get calls on the wasp, so what
can we do? Then there's different kinds of wasp and
hornets and people get confused on what they're actually dealing with.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Do you agree exactly? And so you know, nine times
out of ten my phone rings people say they have bees,
and you know, bees can get in your house, but
it's very rare. Most of the time in New England,
especially this time of year. They're actually lost. And the
problem is that sometimes there's an extrall nest right and
you can buy a can of spray or whatever. But
(02:29):
I want to warn people, like, especially you come into
August September, there's two or three hundred singing insects inside
that hid that really wants it dead. So you know,
when they get to be that big, I mean, you
can try to get a five dollars can of spray
and go assom. But you know, for the little ones,
the little ones that are like a golf ball size,
yeah sure, but when they get big, you know, you
(02:50):
really should try to call a professional.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Yeah. We're not that fast, are we. I can't outrun them.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
The other thing I want to say was that you know,
understand the life cycle of these guys. So to be
starts to get cold, they stop, they stop making just workers,
and they start making they start making as many queens
as possible. As soon as the frost hits, all those queens.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
You're breaking up. If you get October, you're breaking See
if you can move around a little bit, I I know. So,
so they start making queens because they want to start
new colonies, new nests.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Exactly. And then as soon as a frost hits, you
know around here, that's like maybe mid October, they're gonna
they're all gonna leave the nest and they're going to
hibernate in the ground. Okay, So if you've got a
problem with wasps in like mid September, you know the
option of waiting it out is there, or you know,
(03:56):
I would actually suggest, you know, calling a professional who
can come out and take care of it.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Well, I agree on the professional things I've talked about
some wasp traps which move it away from like if
you're having a picnic, help me with this one. So yeah,
we we you know, this beautiful weather this time of year,
my favorite. We're outside, we have cans of beverages. Are
(04:24):
those bees or those wasp or maybe all all insects
are heading for your can of coke?
Speaker 2 (04:32):
So I call it the starving time, right, everybody's getting
ready for the winter, and we all have a sense
of desperation of preparing themselves. Honey Bees, yeah, if they're hungry,
if it's real dry, honey bees will go towards something sweet,
but more than likely it's wasp Yeah. And the reason,
the reason why is actually kind of disgusting. So what
(04:54):
wasps our meat eaters. They're predators. They go out and
they get other bugs, they carve them up, and then
they bring them back to the babies. They see the babies,
and then the babies actually regurgitate back to the adults.
That regurgitation is actually all sucross. It's all sugar wow
for energty. And that's why, that's why, that's why the
loss are after your soda because that's what they're used
(05:15):
to eating.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
Mm hm, that's interesting. Now go ahead, go ahead.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
The traps and things, okay, you know, they really don't.
I think they're kind of a waste of money. I
mean that all they're really going to do is they're
going to collect the wasps. They're not really gonna stop
the problem. You know. To stop the problem, you got
to find where the nest is.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. But I mean, if you're having a
picnic or something and you want to have a wasp
free zone for six hours, not a bad idea. Maybe
good health.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
Yeah, I guess it could help.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
Yeah yeah, I mean it's not going to solve your problem.
The problem is you got a whole colony.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Man.
Speaker 1 (05:55):
I'll tell you what, Brian, I had this problem. This
is interesting. I've told the story before. It bears repeating.
And I was not very smart, but I was very
lucky because you know, like a lot of us, you
get stupid at times, and it's like I got this
nest and I'm going to get rid of it right now.
Well that was It turned out all right, but it
(06:17):
wasn't the smartest thing to do. So I had little
hornets or wasp or something in the house, okay, And
I don't know what they are, and they're little, and
I'm thinking it's probably mid September, and I'm thinking like
it could be in the attic, it could be in
the basement. They could be crawling through an opening around
the window. I don't know, but I do know they're
(06:39):
all going to be gone here. At first frost, we
got thirty days and it was starting to it was
starting to agitate my wife and agitate me. We'd find
these little tiny wasp everywhere. So finally I found the
nest and it was in the basement. And I'm not
going to get into how I got rid of it,
but I wasn't real smart and I was successful and
(07:00):
I eliminated them. But I found out they were German
hornets and they were coming through a piece of mortar
the size of my little finger was missing underneath an
exhaust pipe for the furnace outdoors, and they were going
and they're probably going in and out all summer long.
(07:23):
And for some reason, I'm sure you can answer that.
You know, I started seeing them in August, mid August,
and then they started seeing them till in September and
then eliminated them. But on something like that, a professional
certainly should be called if you got a wasp nest
inside your home.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
So the problem with that is, so, yeah, you find
the hole where it is right now. These guys are
kind of clever, so they'll actually crawl along a structural member.
In other words, the nest could be six seven eight
feet away from where that actual hole is. So if
you do spray with a whole, is you're just making
a mat at the front door. It's very unlikely you're
going to get a good, you know, a good kill
(08:05):
that way. So now I do it. I remove them
without poisons or pesticides. The way that I do it,
I don't advise to other people. I'm a bee keeper.
I wear a suit, I also get stung a lot.
I find where the nest is and I vacuum out.
Is the way I do it. But I just yeah,
(08:26):
so do yes?
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Do they reuse the nest after they all met out?
Speaker 2 (08:32):
No, as far as I know, all of the species
in North America do not reuse the same nest. However,
you will find a spot that looked good one year
will look good next year. So I've taken apart from
old barns, and I can see, like, you know, one
year and then the next year and the next year,
and the older nests are in different states of decay.
So yeah, no, they won't reuse, they won't reuse it all.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Yeah. Well, it sounds like it really aggravated me that
it was in the house because I'm always preaching walking
around the house, look for openings. But this exhaust pipe
wasn't twelve inches off the ground, and I think that
was in code. And I literally got down on hands
and knees and looked up and as soon as I
you know, I was kind of figuring out where the
(09:15):
nest was inside and we're an opening and being sure
enough it was just a missing piece of mortar and
they were having a nice little home there for a
long time. But so your choice is this to summarize, Brian,
I guess as you can sit around and wait for
that first froster, you can get a professional out there
and get that thing removed.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
Yep, yep. And as far as prevention goes, you know,
you're talking about sealing up every whole larger a free
ace of an inch or bigger, right, which is really
impossible in an old home. But yeah, no, those are
the best two options.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
Hey, thank you, my friend. I appreciate you giving us

(13:30):
sale before the leaves really get serious about falling. All right,
our phone number if you'd like to grab a line,
we got a spot for you. It's eight hundred eighty
two three eight two five five. I'm hearing a lot
of questions today about wood, concrete, substrates on the outside
(13:54):
of the home, dirty molds, mildews, and talk about ceilants
and protectants. Everybody needs to know. This is Mother Nature
at her finest, is she you know, everything that falls
from trees, any organic material out there, clippings of grass,
(14:18):
dead leaves, dead weeds. Mother Nature takes care of them
through funguses, algaes, molds, mildews and has them decay. And
that's kind of what keeps our environment cleaned up. That's
the way nature works. Where we start getting mad about
(14:40):
that is you know, just like the person that had
the bench and it was becoming dirty, the celant was
breaking down. That was from the sun, and we want
to protect that so mother nature wants to, you know,
turn it into compost. We want our bench to look nice,
(15:06):
so we come into utilizing different protectments that can do that.
Some most all resist water, some resist UV rays, some
resist little tiny amount of UV rays. So we got
to really decide what do we want with one lady
(15:28):
with the bench, it was a I think a good story.
You can either seal it where it penetrates into the
wood and protects the wood, or you can encapsulate it
and you can encapsulate it with paint. It's not just
about color. It's an encapsulent. You can encapsulate it with
(15:51):
a spar euthane. If it's going to be outdoors, you
can use poly eurethane indoors, but outdoors spa euthane or ring.
You're a thing. The difference is Mother nature still going
to try to attack that. It's gonna try and break
down that film, and it will eventually. And the deal is,
(16:13):
if you have an encapsulate it can peel. It isn't
gonna be broken down by the sun as much. But
if you have to recode it, you're you're you're gonna
have some work to do. You're gonna have to clean it.
You're gonna have to strip it and then you can
fix it up with a deck stain. You're gonna you
(16:36):
don't have to do that, but it's not gonna last
nearly as long. You might be doing it every two
or three years to reseal that with like a deck
stain or an exterior stain. So just keep that in mind. Bill. Welcome,
Hello Gary.
Speaker 4 (16:52):
Uh huh, yes, yes, uh, this is Gil. I'm calling
from Akron, Okay, and I have a problems with my
roof that's about sixteen years old. There's certain sections of
it where oak leaves and those spinners I guess that
(17:13):
come off the maple trees had accumulated in the valleys
and I used wet and forget to try to turn
the dark stains cleared up, and it didn't work. And
I'm wondering, is there's something else that can clean those shingles.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
Well, there is. I'm kind of surprised. Let me ask
you a couple of questions. Did you get all the residue,
I mean, did you get all the spinners and the
different stuff out of the valleys before you used it?
Speaker 5 (17:46):
I sure did?
Speaker 1 (17:47):
Okay, good? And when you sprayed it I'm very surprised
that it didn't work, So I just want to make
sure that we used it properly, because that's an easy,
easy way to do it. You should use it on
a cloudy day, not when it's real super super hot,
so like a day like today where I'm at would
(18:09):
be perfect. Otherwise you get a lot of evaporation. You
and I'm assuming it's been at least six weeks and
you didn't see the results you wanted. So I'm just
curious if you might have put it on a hot
sunny day or something and caused too much evaporation. Sometimes
(18:29):
it will take a second coat, but rarely, so I
just I just say that for information's sake. The other
thing is is you could have it professionally cleaned, because
it's all about the cleaner, and you could use even
oxygenated bleach. But the problem with that it requires some agitation,
(18:51):
and that means up on the roof. That means possible
losing some protective coating on the shingles, and you don't
want to do that.
Speaker 4 (18:58):
I see, but does wet and forget removed thane?
Speaker 1 (19:04):
Yes, it caused five So those black stains is the
fungus It is the algae. It can be like and
it can be mildew. It will remove that, it will
kill it, and it takes you know, like I said,
six weeks, sometimes faster, sometimes longer. We'll continue at home
(19:26):
with Gary Sullivan.
Speaker 3 (19:33):

Welcome, appreciate your show.
Speaker 1 (22:44):
Thank you.
Speaker 6 (22:46):
I'm hard to see an awesome biofilm cleaner from my
washing machine and that absolutely worked perfect. It took me
two cycles to get it work perfect. And I heard
you had the Gentleman on a couple of weeks ago
and you was talking about mixing it up and use
it for your drains, but I guess I didn't. When
(23:06):
you mix it up in that larger quantity, do you
just pour it down the drains and let it go, or.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
You do you would pour it down. In fact, I'll
tell you a funny story. I went out and when
I used on my wash machine when I first found it,
it's probably been five or six years ago, and I'm
really intrigued about doing that on the drains. I got
a couple of vanities that are always well, not always,
but they require a lot of maintenance, and I went
(23:35):
out to get my little I think you probably were
surprised too. The size of the jar is small, but
you don't need much. And I went out and I
took off the lid, and the lid was tight, but
the stuff was it was a hard semi paste, so
I couldn't use it. But the answer to your question, yeah,
(23:59):
it's would be dissolved in water and then poured and
just let it sit there for a while, you know,
maybe overnight, poured in the sink at night and just
let it sit. I'm i gotta get another jar of
it because I definitely want to use it. In the
drains because we get that question a lot on what
to use, and I'm usually mechanically removing it with one
(24:24):
of those zip it strips. Or I was in the
hardware store the other day and spent some time in
that aisle and I was looking at all the different things. Now,
they got a pick that shoots like a jet of
water in there. There's one that's got the little cleats
that you kind of fish down and pull up hair
or dislodge something that's causing a problem. That I saw one.
(24:45):
It's got it's smaller than a pencil, and it's got
little hairs, almost like a cleaner, like a pipe cleaner
would be that you could stick down there. But yeah,
you would. And when he was talking to me when
I had him on the air for kind of an interview,
he was I asked the question, can use it for drains?
He said yeah, But it was like, was it like
(25:06):
an ounce for three gallons of water or something? I mean,
that's a lot.
Speaker 6 (25:13):
But so do you think it'd be more something down.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
Well?
Speaker 1 (25:19):
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I think that's that can also
be problematic. I had a plumber on one day and
he told me to use and I haven't used this.
He told me to use like dishwasher uh soap like
cascade and just squirt some of that down there. I
I've never used that. I have poured bleach down there
(25:40):
before it got rid of the smell, and you know
it did drain a little faster too, So yeah, I
would if you're going to use it on the drain,
i'd definitely port in the overflow also. Okay, alright, alright,
report back, report back. I want to full report. All right, Scott,
(26:01):
all right, take care again. Our number is eight hundred
eight two three eight two five five. Eddie welcome, Yes, sir.
Speaker 7 (26:09):
I want to ask a quick question on the concrete sealer.
Can you say the name of the product? A gentlemen
was just talking about it for the for the washing machine.
I missed the name brand.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
So it's called Awesome. It's a h H. S ome
and it's for washing machines that kind of just smell
real mildewy. First, go ahead and clean the seal with
a little bleach and water. Just wipe that down. Make
sure that's not it. But that whole system is a
closed plumbing system, and they get this biofilm in there,
(26:41):
bleaching and gonna touch it. It may make you feel
good for a week, but this stuff actually eats through
the biofilm.
Speaker 7 (26:49):
Okay, great, I had a I guess pay attention to
the dates that I'm gonna say that way if you
tell me if I'm jumping the gun. I had a
driveway twenty by fifty four in October of twenty three,
and I had a zero entry curve put in. I
didn't realize how thick that had to be. And I
(27:10):
got to stand around and watch them for seven or
nine inches. I didn't believe them. Yeah, so I want
to I wanted to seal it after they left, but
I was told that they sprayed something on it with
a whole house sprayer.
Speaker 5 (27:25):
Yea.
Speaker 7 (27:25):
And when I went to a concrete place that sells
sealer in blue Ash, I didn't want to promote their name,
and they told me I needed to wait a few years.
And so so I mean, am I okay now?
Speaker 1 (27:39):
I yeah? So what they probably and I'm guessing what
they probably applied, is a product like a cure and seal.
It helps with the curing of the concrete and it
offers some immediate protection. Usually and here's the part that
you know to make a definitive answer is challenging. Usually
(28:00):
cure and silk seal product will last three years. Okay,
so you know two.
Speaker 7 (28:07):
By wanting to seal now or well wait another year.
Speaker 1 (28:15):
Yeah, I hear you, I hear you. The real question
is will that concrete accept the sealer? So I guess
what I would tell you to do, is you know,
next time you're out there, take a tablespoon of water,
or if you got a hose with a little miss
just wet that driveway, either with a dollop of water
(28:36):
or a spray mist and take a look at what
happens the water. In other words, does it does it
beat up or is it just soak right into the concrete.
If it soaks right into the concrete, I'd go ahead
and seal it because it's going to absorb the sealer,
which is probably the same viscosity as water, So that's
(28:57):
probably the best way to do it.
Speaker 7 (29:00):
So my entire home I like shine, So I like
high gloss baseboards, high gloss windows, and door trim. And
because I figured over the years, it's gonna dull, so
if I started out with satin, it would be real
doll over twenty years, I'm back to satin. So I'm
just that way. And so I'm kind of that way
(29:21):
with the driveway. I want I want a poly your
thinge wet look on the driveway, but I also want
sealer too. Is that possible to get both?
Speaker 1 (29:30):
Yeah? It is. I would just be hesitant, but it
is possible. They make gloss sealers. They make gloss sealers
for stamp concrete. They make it for exposed aggregate concrete.
If you went to that concrete ceiling store in Blue Hash,
(29:51):
go back there and talk to them about it. Now,
the sun will eventually degrade that to a flat. It
will wear out, and it'll probably do that in three years. Also,
and yeah, it's a coating, so you got to do
(30:13):
it again. And when it begins to fail, it's going
to be noticeable. I mean you're going to see it
and go wooh. Now it's also it's also it's going
to be slippery because we're adding achine to it.

Speaker 1 (30:34):

land on your tocus going out and getting a mail or.
Speaker 7 (30:39):

don't want anything anybody else that I seem to have
the home where the neighbors always come over, so I
don't want that to happen there. You recommend a high
quality Money's not the option. For as much as I

looks right now. It'll be breathable, which is a benefit,

exhaust moisture up through the slab and through the ceialer,
but it's going to minimize the penetration of the water
from the top down, which is good when we get
into the salty brine from rock salts and things like that.
And that's website was Masonrydefender dot com and they have

for the weekend talking about our homes. And I've mentioned
it many times over the years of doing this show,
and it's the truth. We we you know, pay attention
and nurture our investments, and the biggest investment many of
us will ever make in our lifetime is our home.
And that's what we do this show for, is to
(35:23):
talk about the maintenance of it, the repair of it.
And you know, sometimes we've been talking about reclaiming the
money we invest into our homes. Some people just call
them a money pit. I think that's not necessarily true.
It can be, especially if you don't do the maintenance.
(35:43):
So that's what we talk about a lot. If you'd
like to join us, do so. It's eight hundred and
eighty two three A two five five Charles. Welcome Gary,
Good morning morning.
Speaker 5 (35:54):
I have a question, but why we waiting, you talked
about something about a composite for railings that you said
was really super uh huh commercial. It went too fast,
I couldn't get it written down.
Speaker 1 (36:12):
Well, that was actually since you were on hold, that
was actually a local commercial. And gosh, I'm trying to think,
we have to look that up for you again because
I the name of the company that does it is
in my hometown. It was mcab lumber and it was links.
I think, how do you spell McCay's. It's mc c
(36:37):
abe lumber.
Speaker 5 (36:41):
So maybe if I went to their website I would.
Speaker 1 (36:43):
Find oh yeah, yeah, I mean, you know. One of
the biggest things right now, Charles, is some of these railings.
They're awesome. The one that that particular railing was was
a cable railing. So if you've got you know, especially
people that have decks with a good view, they've got
(37:04):
cable railings. I've even seen some clear almost like a
glass half wall where you can actually you know, see
the view that you're afforded there. But cable railings have
become really really big and it has a composite frame
on it.
Speaker 5 (37:25):
Okay, well, in my situation, I don't have a view
It's just that when the deck was put up, it
was it was Treks for the for the deck boards,
but they used lumber for the railings. The trecks is fantastic,
it looks it looks brand new, but the wood for
the railings, it's all already, you know, kind of it's
(37:45):
just not good.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
So sure, how long ago was that Treks put in there, Charles?
Speaker 5 (37:51):
About ten years ago?
Speaker 1 (37:52):
Ten years ago. You might even go to their website.
I'm sure they have composite railing also.
Speaker 5 (37:58):
Okay, all right, okay, that whole Then.
Speaker 1 (38:02):
I was going to say that whole category has just
changed dramatically and it is all about viewing and maintenance
free because we spent a lot of time just maintaining
our day.
Speaker 5 (38:13):
Yeah, okay, So now the other question I have there
isn't I originally called that I'm having this flab installed
at my ham. It's about fourteen by twenty four, and
I was talking to the man about curing and he
said that it was going to have some kind of
(38:37):
agent curing agent in it when the mix comes from
whatever company he buys it from. Okay, but because it
was in a sunny location, I would probably have to
be spraying at a couple times a day for seven days, okay.
And the two questions I have is one does that
(39:01):
is there is there such a thing as as a
curing agent that is in the mix when it comes.
And then the second thing is if there is and
it is in there, would it be better to spray
something like curre and sea line it rather than just
watering it down for seven days or what?
Speaker 1 (39:23):
Well? Number one, yes, there are curing agents that can
be included in the concrete that you've ordered. You know,
there's different products that are in there to help it cure,
not cracked, not shrink too fast, keeping it wetted down obviously,
(39:44):
you know, a decent idea. Now whether that I don't
think it would have a ceiling agent in there. Also,
I think it's just strictly a curing agent. I mean,
you'll have to check with them, as I hate to
tell you to do something and without knowing what's in
that mix, okay, so you know if they wanted to
(40:06):
have in fact, you might even ask him that question.
My guess is it's probably got a curing agent in there.
You can probably wait twenty eight days and then apply
a sealant.
Speaker 5 (40:20):
Okay, all right, so just follow.
Speaker 1 (40:23):
Yeah, because we don't know what We don't know exactly
what's in that batch. I mean, you know there's a
curing agent in it, and that's good. Most of the
time there is. But you can ask him that question.
I just don't want to tell you to go get
something off the shelf and have it. You know, it's
like taking prescription drugs, don't. We want to make sure
(40:43):
we're going in the same direction. So if it doesn't
have a seiler in there and it's just a curing agent,
let the curing agent do its job, and then in
twenty eight days you can apply the breathable ceiling on there.
Speaker 5 (40:57):
Okay, one more quick question. He said, I'm going to
be spraying with water for seven days, a couple of
times a day. How much water they are we talking
about it?
Speaker 1 (41:07):
You're just moistening it down. What you're you're from California?
What part of California from you? A real sunny, warm location.
Speaker 5 (41:18):
Well, yeah, I'm in a sunny location, but it's not
particularly warm. Okay, maybe seventy degrees.
Speaker 1 (41:26):
Yeah, you're just he's just helping you control the curing
of that concrete. So he's probably and again I don't
know what his technique is, but his his. You're moistening it,
you're not flooding it. So you're just spraying it. It's
not like watering a plant. You're just missing it over,
(41:48):
just keeping it damp. He may even have it covered
with a little burlap or something along those lines. But
burlap or no burlap, you're not going to flood that.
You're just missing it. You're keeping it so it doesn't
dry too quickly. You're helping it cure over time, not
(42:08):
you know, it's not fast food. You want to extend
the time.
Speaker 5 (42:13):
Okay, So just to light missed. Okay, yes, sir, m
h okay, Thanks Gary, all right.
Speaker 1 (42:18):
Charles, thanks for the car. I appreciate it. Take care
bye bye. Yeah, and some of those things. I mean,
it's real, it's real chemistry. Concrete is it's really Concrete
is a phenomenal product. I guess you can get it
in you know, different pounds per square inch. You can
get reinforced concrete where it's in the mix, it's got
(42:42):
fiberglass in it, you get different slump ratings. I mean,
it's it's really a phenomenal product. I just don't want
to mess up that chemistry. You know, follow follow that
person's directions. They're kind of responsible for it. You're paying
for you're helping them out. But we want to follow
(43:04):
those directions up. When it comes to ceiling or painting
or any type of coating on concrete, it's twenty eight
days period, no questions asked, so keep that in mind. Also,
all right, our phone number is eight hundred eight two
three eight two five five. We got Robert, Mary, Joe, Todd, Dennis,
(43:26):
