(00:00):
All right, back to work wego. We are thirty three minutes after
the top of the our joiney us. Now is Bill Stangel. He's been
on before. He is a nationalsales major, first Summit Chemical and Bill
walcome again at home with Gary Sullivan. Hey you knowing Gary, always a
pleasure. Thank you man. We'regonna get outside and we're gonna start having
a good time. The weather's changingand it also means ticks, mosquitos,
(00:26):
garden pest, and well that's yourspecialty. So let's talk about mosquitos first.
I was telling people yesterday, youknow, keeping the gutters clean,
free flowing. People get tired ofhearing me preach about that. That's one
way to you know, kind ofcontrol the mosquito population. But you've got
(00:47):
a product and has been around fora long time. That's a wonderful product.
Tell me a little bit about controlmosquitoes around our home. Well,
mosquito dunks is what we have tocontrol mosquito larva. So mosquito larva is
at first stage, after the femalelays the eggs, they turn into larva
(01:08):
and eventually turn into adults. Andthat's in any standing water. So if
you have standing water around the homethat you cannot get rid of or don't
want to get rid of. You, So you have a bird bath upon
the fountain. Anything with standing wateras an open invitation for mosquitoes to breed.
(01:32):
So you pop a mosquito dunk inthe water, mosquito dunkle, treat
the water for thirty days or more. It's a harmless bacteria that's lethal to
mosquito larva and harmless to everything else. Nice. So it's not going to
hurt the birds if they're going tothe bird bath roads, No, not
(01:53):
at all, man. So prettyeasy to do too, just drop one
in. It is easy to do. But you know, I'm going to
reinforce which you keep telling your listenersabout those gutters. Yeah. I mean
again, just just a symbol fullof water that stuck up in that gutter
is like an invitation for mosquitos toopen their own mosquito condo. Yeah,
(02:16):
So you get them, get themcleaned, and any of those areas of
standing water that you can't readily getrid of them, treat them with mosquito
dunks. And I guess it kindof comes back to two on a maintenance
issue, maybe just even around theyard you know, trash can lids that
are you know, upside down andlaying on the ground. Kids, trucks,
(02:39):
toys, little inflatable pulls, allthose things really can become breeding grounds
from them from mosquitoes, Oh absolutely. And you know what are accumulating places
that you don't even think of.So if you have an underground sprinkler system
for your home, for instance, there are valve boxes control boxes out there
(03:02):
that accumulate water in them. Youknow they're they're clothes, they have a
cover over room, so you don'teven think about it, but you know
they have an opening for mosquitoes toget in, and they have water down
there, and you want to checkthose and make sure that they're nice and
dry. If they're not dry, they're on mosquito dunk in there. The
(03:23):
the A lot of people have waterthat drains down through their downspouts and they
directed out to the into the yardor into a driveway, and it's it's
um done with corrugated pipe. Andthat corrugated pipe that comes out to an
edge. Those end pieces of corrugationare just you know, half inch deep
(03:47):
in each corrugation and again that's justperfect for mosquitos. So you know,
go out and make sure that stuff'sclear. Any standing water that stands for
a week or more, is thatperfect mosquito breeding ground? Bill, how
um, maybe you know this.I'm sure you do. You're the mosquito
man, of course Bill knows this. How far do mosquitoes travel? In
(04:11):
other words, is it like,is it miles or is it yards?
Typically for most mosquitos, it's yards. I mean there are varieties of mosquitoes
that can travel a greater distance.Salt marsh mosquitos are going to travel much
further distance than the typical mosquitoes you'regoing to find in a urban or suburban
(04:32):
area. So those are going tobe yards, hundreds of yards at the
most. But you know, hundredsof yards means you know your house,
your neighbor's house, their neighbor's house. So sure you want to get the
community involved in this, in thismosquito control effort, right, So that
(04:55):
was one of the things I wasgoing to say. So you can control
your yard. I mean, wecan all do it if we make an
effort to, you know, controlthe standing water from mosquito larvae. Aren't
you know, in the water withthe mosquito dunks or flipping over a trash
can getting rid of the standing water. But also hear about different sprays and
(05:17):
now, does some chemical have aspray where we could sprayed like a perimeter
around our yard if we've done agood job of of controlling the water in
our yard, but maybe our neighborsdidn't do such a good job. Well,
we do have a spray that killsadult mosquitos. But um, yeah,
(05:40):
understand it's not as simple as justspraying a perimeter. Yeah, any
spray, any fog, any, anything that comes out of a mist,
anything, it's it's all heavier thanair. It's all going to settle to
the ground. So mosquitos, youknow, once that initial fog, that
initial spray has landed, mosquitoes caneasily fly through that. Now, if
(06:04):
you're spraying vertical surfaces where mosquitoes mightland, because mosquitoes do land a lot.
They're not strong flyers. They're alwayslanding to rest or they're looking for
food. Mosquitos typically are nectar feeders. It's only the female mosquito when she's
(06:26):
breeding goes after a blood meal toprovide protein for the eggs. But so
you can spray those vertical surfaces, you can spray shrubbery, you can spray
any place where they will land, will help keep them at bay. But
the idea that you can just spraya whole area, whole perimeter, unfortunately,
(06:48):
it just doesn't work that way.So if somebody got some mosquito,
don't controlled the breeding of the mosquitoes, and then would you use like a
year on spray on vertical surface andbushes, is that would be a plus
though? Correct? Yeah? Yeah, use uh. I mean we have
a product called Mosquito and Nat Barrier, and you know that that that's great
(07:13):
for spraying down those areas, sprayingdown um, screening around doorways, around
windows, you know, any placewhere mosquitoes are are looking to come into
home or come into the ports orgood uh you know, around your furniture.
Yeah, all of that. Youknow, once they land on that
kind of treated surface, that's that'sgoing to take care of them too.
(07:38):
All right, Well, a lotof graduation parties and everything. Let's get
rid of those mosquitoes. So we'regoing to have some fun also a lot
of people, you know, justyou know, it's beautiful time of year
hiking and out in the woods andstuff, and ticks are becoming seems like
a bigger and bigger problem. Canyou help us with that? Controlling ticks?
(08:01):
Ticks are really scary right now.If you're reading anything about ticks.
There are new varieties of ticks outthere. There's one tick that's my personal
fear. It's called a lone startick and it is in your listening area.
It's in a lot of areas eastof the Mississippi right now, and
a bite from this tick can possiblygive you a permanent red meat allergy.
(08:26):
Really, you know, imagine youknow, no more hamburgers, no more
steaks, no more hotdogs. Youknow, that makes for a lousy picnic.
Wow. So um yeah. Withwith ticks, you want to be
diligent. You want to make sureif you're out hiking you when you get
back, you want to do anice thorough tick chick. You want to
shower off. But we do havea product that's going to help, and
(08:52):
that's called our Green Armor insect repellentfor clothing and gear. So this is
a little bit different from most ofthe insect repellants that people are familiar with.
It you put on your skin rightthis you actually treat your clothing before
you wear your clothing. So youspray your pants, your shirts, your
socks, your shoes and let itdry and once it dries, you put
(09:16):
it on and it will kill andrepel any ticks that get on your clothing
for um to six weeks. Wow. That's awesome. Start incorporating in clothing
before long, I guess. Hwell, actually some companies already do that.
Is that right? Wow? Yeah? So this is so if you
(09:39):
don't want to buy a new wardrobeand it's not because you gained weight,
you can actually spray your existing clothing. It's called green armor to control.
Yes. Wow, that green armorinsect repellant for clothing and gear. That's
great. Is there anything we cando? Ticks are usually in the woods
(10:01):
and tall grass. How do theyget into a nice little subdivision and then
you know, manicured landscaping and stufflike that. Well that, I mean,
that's a really good point. Andthere's a lot of things that people
can do in their landscape to tryto keep ticks out. Ticks like humid
areas, they like shaded areas. They hate well manicured lawns. I mean,
(10:24):
they can't survive in a well trimmedlawn. But on the outskirts of
that well trimmed lawn. You know, you could have brush, shrubbery,
wooded areas, anything like that,so um, you know, any of
those kind of areas, it's goodto mult your perimeter, have a have
(10:46):
a nice um. You know, two or three foot wide mult area.
Ticks can't really survive going from thewooded area to the multi area to your
yard, so anything like that. You know, if you have kids and
swing sets and playground equipment and thingslike that, keep that away from the
wooded area, keep it more inthe center of your landscape plot and that'll
(11:11):
help avoid having having your kids getticks. It sounds like in both these
cases, you know, maintenance andyou know keeping clean and manicured is certainly
going to help. And then ofcourse some a chemical. You got to
Mosquito Dunks and we talked about theyear round spray oil and we also talked
(11:33):
about the green armor tick control products. So, man, that's pretty scary
about that lone star tick. I'llhave to read up on that. I
know there's been a lot of differentquote breeds of ticks that are becoming problems.
I wasn't familiar with that one.Where do people find these types of
products, you can find them ina number of hardware stores, garden centers
(12:00):
online. Yet some of the bigbox stores home depot lows they carry the
Squter don Face hardware true value everywhere. Lots of places to find the stuff.
And yeah, and you can alwaysgo to our website and or give
(12:20):
us a call. We'll point tothe right direction. Sounds great, Bill,
is good talking to you again.I think we'll check back in the
summertime and see where this tick thing'sgoing, because I got to get that
under control, that's for sure.Oh yeah, read up on that lone
star tick. It is a scarything. Yeah, it sounds like it.
