Speaker 1 (00:02):
All right, time to get back to work. What do
you say We're going to learn a little bit about
outdoor lighting. You see it on commercial buildings, you see
in your neighborhoods. Can you do it yourself? Do you
want to get a pro? What's new? We got lots
of questions and we got the man that can answer,
Chris McCoy. He's the founder and CEO of Haven Lighting.
Joining us and Chris, welcome again to that home with
(00:24):
Gary Salvan. How you doing.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
I'm doing great, Gary, How are you doing?
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Wonderful? Wonderful? The way in that industry is really exploding,
isn't it.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
It really has Yeah, the last ten years, it's it's
really it's really excelled.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
So what do you think the reason is? I mean,
it looks great. I guess maybe that's the reason. Is
there another reason? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
I think I think there's just a lot more capability
today than there was twenty years ago. So with smart
technology and everything, it's just easier.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Sure. Sure, Well we're going to get in Haven Lighting
and where you've taken a lot of this industry on
your back and have done a great job. But I'd
like to really start at the basics when we said,
boy really started exploding in the last ten years. I
remember in my second home, which was probably twenty years ago,
I started thinking, geez, I'd like to just stick a
(01:21):
spotlight and blow it up in that tree. That look
really cool, And I guess there was some outdoor lighting there.
And I know when I walked through the home depot
or the local hardware store, I still see some lights.
So there's people doing it themselves. Also, let's just talk
(01:43):
about maybe mistakes people would make if they did lighting themselves,
because I've seen some jobs that there's a talent. There's
an art to outdoor lighting. Fair enough, Yeah, to.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Some degree, there certainly is a lot of it comes
down the preference, really, and so if you're going to
do it yourself, my biggest recommendation is drive around some
neighborhoods that have a lot of lighting in it and
just pick out some houses that you like. And then
I'd say the biggest mistake people make is they see
a house they like and they don't really look at
(02:18):
it real close, and so they leave and they think, well,
that house has five lights on it, when really that
house had twelve. Right, So really, just and if you
pay attention to where the lights are. Then you kind
of get an idea of all, right, where they play them.
I like the look of that, and then you can
take that and apply it to your house.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Yeah, well, there's all so and the lights. You know,
if you're going to do it yourself, what are your
options do you? I guess you have some solar lights.
You have some lights that run on a transform ram
and it's not like you run an extension cord light
Christmas lights. Correct, that's correct.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Yeah, it's going to be permanently installed lights. So you
can have you can do solars. Certainly, a lot of
times the solar ones will not shine all night long
and they'll dim. They'll dim throughout the night and then
and then go out sometime sometime during the night, and
especially if they're in the shade during the day, they
don't they don't do real well. And then your second option,
(03:17):
the most popular option, is really just a low voltage,
a low voltage system that does have a transformer somewhere
somewhere on the house to convert the one twenty bowls
down to low voltage. And the nice part about that
is if you're doing it yourself, it's safe. I mean,
I wouldn't recommend it. But literally you can hold the
wires and you won't feel anything. It's just it's just
twelve to fifteen volts, so it's not harmful.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
So it's also got to add to the security I
guess of your house. Does it not?
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Yeah, it certainly does. It certainly doesn't. What we find
is is you're doing it for a lot of reasons.
Security is certainly one of them. But really, if you're
doing your your house is probably also the hangout house.
Your house is probably also where people come over for
Christmas and and and people come over for holidays and
things like that just because or friends and family come
(04:10):
over just to hang out. Because when you have that lighting,
you extend, you extend the time that you're able to
be outside.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Sure, Sure, and with haven lighting you do all kinds
of buildings, and you do residential, probably do around outdoor
living is so big with decks and things. I mean,
we're going to get into all the cool things you
do in a second. But there's no end to this lighting.
(04:38):
It's like spreading malts. Chris, that's right.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Call it. I call it like getting a tat team.
Once you get one, you get usually a lot more.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Oh, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah, so, yeah, you can do anything. And now in
these days roofline line is really popular that or some
people call it permanent Christmas lights. There are people putting
you know, when we do that as well, you can
di why that as well, or or having us all
kind of the same as landscape boarding. It's it's really
up to you. But permanent Christmas lights are the last
five years have really taken off just because I mean
(05:14):
I started the business because I didn't want to put
up Christmas lights anymore. So I totally get it.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
A man after my own heart. Man, I'm all about
easy and uh yeah. Yeah. So so let's start with
tell us a little history about Haven Lighting. How long
you've been in business? He tell us your start because
you didn't want to put up Christmas lights. That's as
good a reason as any.
Speaker 2 (05:38):
Yeah, yeah, it was really just you know, our our
goal is to create the ultimate gathering place and and
we do that commercially and residentially. And we're on tons,
like you said, we're on tons of commercial buildings, on
tons we sell all over the country. And you know,
we're on a couple of resorts in Disney World, and
we're on We're on you know homes that that you
(06:00):
see every day around around town. So we really do
it all. We also sell direct to the consumer. We
sell we sell through professional installations, so you name it,
we're here to help you. And and uh. But we
got started about eight years ago and literally I was
I was outside putting up Christmas lights and I just
thought to myself, I don't want to do this anymore.
(06:20):
And so I looked up. I looked up, I tried,
I googled smart you know, full color landscape lights and
and and nothing really came up that I wanted and
so uh and so I decided, well, I'm going to
make it.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
I love it. That's the American dream man. I'm gonna
build me a better mouse trap. So did you start
out with just LED bulbs or tell you tell us
your your first edition. I know it's changed a lot, it.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Has changed a lot. Yeah, So the first edition was
an LED bulb. The the concept of the company was
really complete automation. So you know, at my house, I
don't touch I don't touch my app at all. It
changes for Memorial Day week and automatically every year. It
changes for the Fourth of July and Christmas and all
those seasons, and the goal was was ultimately that. But
(07:15):
when I started, I didn't have enough money to create
all that infrastructure for the smartphone control, to create the
app and the and the cloud support and everything and
so uh and so we started with a little manual
controlled light that you you walked around the yard and
put a what we call the smart key on the
light and it changed colors until you got to the
one you want and then you then you removed the
smart key. Now, I will tell you that once we
(07:37):
came out with the phone control stuff, about a year later,
we sold both and we didn't sell one manual system
after that. Yeah, So that's how that's how hot the
the you know, and everybody just wanteds just like I said,
because I don't touch mine, like it just changes automatically
and you don't have to do anything. And that's the
best part about it.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
So when you talk about changing colors, was that was innovative?
Was it not?
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Yeah? To some degree. Yeah, I mean, you know, colorvide
haven't been around on the commercial aspect for for quite
a while. The technology to do it was very cumbersome
and even today if you see you know, Empire State building.
The technology that they have to run the Empire State
Building is you have to you have to know programming.
And what we did was we brought out an that
(08:28):
that you don't have to know any programming. You can
just say I want to set it up for Christmas,
and it's very easy. We have lots of tutors on
the website with how to do it in two to
three minutes.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
You can have a set up, folks. You can take
a look at some of the pictures that Chris is
talking about to your websites Haven Lighting dot com.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
Correct, Yes, that's correct.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
Okay, and you can take a look at some of this.
So so you start the controls and we'll get into that.
I don't want that to scare people because it is
very easy. Yeah. I know. When I had my lighting installed,
the guy around the corner headed his installed the next summer.
And I think it's because you could say it's all
(09:11):
about easy, but it's beautiful. I know he did his
whole backyard. He decided we're going to stay in this
house for a while, and you know, did a great
job of the lighting in his backyard. I'm sure you
get business like that residentially and corporately. People just see
and say, wow, I want that.
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Yeah, we do. And I can tell you that if
you're doing you know, if you're putting lights in the backyard,
especially color lighting, and we saw white lighting only too,
by the way, but if you're putting color lighting in
your backyard. The main reason our customers do it, and
this is actually pretty surprising, is that they're doing it
to bring their kids back home. Really, their kids are
(09:52):
hanging out with other at other people's houses and or
or they're they're in college or out of college, and
they want they want to bring their kids back home.
They want a great place to hang out in the backyard.
So that's that's the number one reason.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
So you were talking about Disney resorts and all the
colors and everything, and I know you are like the
mad scientist. I have a couple friends and business owners
are the mad scientists. You keep inventing new stuff. And
you know, I see this beautiful bridge, there's a river
and it's lit up in blue, and the next day
it's lit up in green, and when it's thirty degrees out,
(10:28):
this other thing is pink or something. So there's I mean,
there's so many possibilities with colors and it's beautiful and
we're going to take a break if you can stick
with me for ten minutes. When we come back, we're
going to talk about the newest color combinations you have.
Sound good?
Speaker 2 (10:45):
Sure? Absolutely?
Speaker 1 (10:46):
All right? All right, all right. Chris McCoy, he is
my man here, he's the founder and CEO of Haven Lighting.
Will take a break and come back and find out
what the newest invention in color lighting. And they're LEDs.
These babies last a while. We'll get in to that too.

of outdoor lighting. And Chris McCoy is the founder and
CEO of Haven Lighting.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
And it's it's it.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Is what it's cloud controlled. Is that the way you
would say, Chris, it is so you.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Can control it anywhere in the world.
Speaker 1 (13:47):
Yeah, okay, all right? And these are LED bulbs, correct,
So they last a long time, They last.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
A long time.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
We started lad enough that LEDs were already prevalent, so
so yeah, everything we make is LED and makes color
changing easy. And but even our wife lights are all
a d as matter of fact, you can't even you
can't even find incandescent involves anymore. So that's the other thing.
That kind of spurred on this. This landscape lighting and
roofline lighting growth is just because the amount of energy
(14:20):
it takes to run your to light your house is
way less than ease.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
Oh yeah, yeah yeah. So now it's programmed. You can
program colors and all kinds of good things. I know
you know this, but I've used the colors. We got
green on Saint Patrick's Day, We get you know, the
Christmas the red and green in different areas because you
can actually, you know, make this bush blue and this
(14:47):
one pink if you wanted. And it's unlimited really to
your imagination, and I know your imagination's going uh wild
all the time. So what's your newest color combinations?
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Well, really kind of the latest thing that we have is,
uh is the roofline lighting combined with landscape lighting all
in one app, which is fantastic. It's really really cool looking.
But but we also interface with sporting events and so automatically,
so uh you can you can connect your house to
your favorite your favorite baseball team or football team or
(15:24):
n c A A team and have it turn team
colors when the game starts. You can have it. If
you get our pro system, you can have it dance
when when they score, uh you can when they you
can set it up so if they win, you can
have it do one thing, and if they lose, you
can have it to do another thing. It's it's a
really really a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
Oh my gosh. So for the big game, and uh,
you can sport your colors. I know right now in
the neighborhood a lot of people will be putting up
their flags during football season. I had another client years ago, Chris.
I'll tell you this story. It's kind of fun. You're
on the right track because when I first heard this,
(16:06):
I went what.
Speaker 3 (16:07):
And uh it was duct tape and uh it was
their developer of products in this guy decided he was
going to buy the rights to uh uh college teams
and have you know Alabama duct tape and Ohio State
duct tape.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
And I'm going like, really people going to buy that?
Oh yeah, you know when they tailgate coolers and I
go really, yeah, yeah, I'm like duct tape, man, give
me a roll of silver duct tape. That's fy that
it just exploded, just exploded, so yet.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
So many comments on it.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
Yeah yeah, so when did you start doing that?
Speaker 2 (16:51):
So that's been out about a year and uh, and
it's it's really taken off and it's great. I mean,
you know, the difference is is that what you know,
with with the color, you would get anywhere. You can
manually set those And what we found out is people
probably do it for the first big game and then
everyone after that they don't. They just don't do it
(17:12):
because they forget, or they got other things going on,
or if they have people over, they've got other things
to get ready and they just don't. They don't do it.
And so with that all happening automatically, and it's automatic
connecting to your team, so you can have it, it
just doesn't automatically every time they play. And it's a
lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
So let's just because I'm sure there's people listening to us,
and you know, we talked about outdoor lighting and now
we're lighting up our homes like our favorite college basketball
team or football team or whatever when they're playing. Can
you just kind of walk us through and I don't
need it to be you know, by point, but explain
(17:51):
how easy it is to do. Maybe talk about the
zones and dates and times. I mean, it's not difficult
to do. I can do it. So can you spend
some time on that.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
Sure. Yeah, so uh it wires up just like any
regular landscape light that you would get anywhere. So uh,
if you got landscape blights at home depot, this installation
would be exactly the same. There's no difference. And then uh,
after you get an insulted, the only thing you're going
to do is you're going to connect your transformer to
your to your Wi Fi network, just like you wouldn't
(18:23):
Alexa write no different than that, and uh, and then
you're going to uh basically put a put a key
on every light and address it, you know, so you
can control the lights individually. And then once you've done that,
you just it's it's a save as. So if you
want to make a Christmas scene, you just set you
just you know, and we have pictures on the app,
(18:44):
so you can take a picture of your house. You
can you can see where the lights are, so literally
you can just click on the picture and that I
want this light red, this light green, and this light red.
And then and then you do a save as and
you call that Christmas and that's that's now Christmas.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
And that'll come on whatever date you choose Thanksgiving Day.
If you want.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
That's right. We can float with Thanksgiving, so most of
our customers do Thanksgiving day plus one, so the day
after Thanksgiving, Christmas comes on and it's great, so you
don't have to worry about it.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
That's phenomenal. That's phenomenal. So when you do the team sports,
I might have missed that. Do you just check the
schedule and log it in that way or can you
is there a quicker wall?
Speaker 2 (19:24):
No, you don't even check this. We handle all that
for you, Gary. So all as you do is you
connect to You say I want to connect to the
Cincinnati Reds and you say, here's my Reds scene that
I want to run during the game, and that's it.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
That's soth.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Can we handle the schedule?
Speaker 1 (19:39):
Yeah, that's fantastic service too. I know sometimes when we
talk about transformers and iclouds and programmed people were like, oh,
it's not that hard. Well, if you can put in
a roku, you can do this. Trust me, it's not
that difficult. Can you tell us about service though? People?
(20:01):
I know you pride yourself on good customer service, residential
or commercial.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Yeah, we do. And the nice part is is you know, however,
you have your house set up for whatever holidays and
whatever sporting events or whatever. If you're having a problem
or have some questions, we can actually pull up your system.
Because we are cloud based, we can actually pull up
your system see everything and even even on the phone,
programming for you and then it'll automatically show up on
your phone just like we did it.
Speaker 1 (20:28):
Well, all right, so there you go, folks. I hope
you appreciate what Chris is talking about. It's innovative. Ten
years you can hardly call it new, but I know
it's changing annually and you keep building the monster. If
people want to get a hold of you or the
(20:49):
website is Havenlighting dot com. You do the installation. You
can take care of everything from A to Z. How
do they get a hold of you?
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Yeah, the best thing is the website, so we can.
You can also call us with the numbers on the
website as well, so either one. But we've got installers
all over the country and and you know, if you
want to do it yourself, we're happy to help you there.
And if you want to have it as well, we've
got people to help you.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
Very good Chris, thanks so much for joining us today.
I certainly appreciate it. You did great. Thank you. Thanks
by all right, there you go. Chris McCoy, founder and
CEO of Heven Lighting, just kind of want to give
you an idea all the great things that are out
there and how far you can take them. And Chris's
company is done quite well and as you can tell,
(21:40):
the conversation very interesting. All Right, our phone number we'll
talk about your home projects. It's eight hundred eight two
three eight two five five and you're at home with
Gary Sullivan. Takes it right with a call to Gary
(22:10):
Sullivan at one eight hundred eight two three talk. This
is at Home with Gary Sullivan.
