Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, I don't know about your yard and landscaping, but boy,
where I live, certainly the amount of rainfall and the
heat this year has made things grow quite nicely, and
it also breeds more problems. Heard Ron Wilson are gardening
expert talking about the crab grass and different things in

(00:21):
our lawns. So we bring Ron on once again a
weekly conversation on the landscaping and lawn And Ron Wilson,
how in the world are you?

Speaker 2 (00:34):
I'm great? And plus you know all the maintenance crews,
landscaping crews, lawn crews that work at your house also
help them make that look so nice.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Yeah, you know, you're exactly right.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
You don't have landscaping, cruise and lawn. I thought you
did that.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
I do, Okay, I do. And I was mowing and
one thing you were talking about, Craig Brass, I noticed
the same thing. A lot of crab grass and that
weed with the little flowers I'll always forget the name
of it. Not flowers, but little leafs that pull out
real easy. That's everywhere. And a lot of crazy like

(01:13):
annual grasses like wild bermuda and stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Wow, wild bermuda. Yeah, wow, you got man?

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Where do you you maybe grass, I don't know, it's
it's not the nuts at Actually there's all kinds of
those weird grasses growing.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah, and we were, yeah, we were. We were talking
about that this morning because you know, we got off
the last fall for us in our area. In many areas,
lawns took a beating, right, they're really thinned out. And
then we had a horribly dry, warm fall, which made
it tough to seed and get the seed up and growing.
So we got into the spring season and some seeded
and some didn't. And then it took off quickly and

(01:53):
the rain took off and there grass started growing and
things were green, and it was like, wow, we're okay.
But then you start looking close and guess what most
of that green isn't the lawn. You know, it's other
things like nimblewell and you know crab grass and field
pass pale them and you know all of that, and
some of those orchard grasses in Dallas grass, Yeah, that's
that's foxtail, and you know they just creep. You know,

(02:16):
it's just crazy now. Just and the bluegrass too.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
It's a bit about that. You talk about how the
lawns it thinned out but even in the landscaping beds,
the amount of weeds this year is it? You know,
people that use like we'd preventive and everything, and with
all the rain, does that just get in the heat
and the sun, does that just get diluted out?

Speaker 2 (02:36):
And it does?

Speaker 1 (02:37):
Maybe the longevity isn't you know, you get in a regular.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Year, sun really takes a toll on it. Excessive moisture
takes a toll on it. So you know, you put
down a pre emmergent says ninety days and if you
have a lot of sun, you have a lot of rainfall,
it can maybe only last seventy days, right, So you
got to kind of keep that in the mind and
when you do a pre emergent that you know you're
gonna have to apply it again. Especially in the landscape beds.

(03:01):
I always try to do it about two weeks in
advance of when you anticipated it running out, and again,
if you had a lot of rainfall, maybe even back
it up to three weeks. So there's an overlap there
of the two pre emergence. But yeah, weeds the same way.
Weeds have had a great and in the landscape and
the vegetable garden, anual beds have had a great spring.

(03:22):
I mean that summer they've just done exceptionally well. That's
along with along with everything else. So I think the
thing about weeds that folks need to keep in mind,
especially this time of the year, is you don't want
those to get a foothold. You know, if it's a
perennial weed, and the longer you let it grow and
the more root system it develops, the harder it is
to get rid of it. If those plants go to seed,

(03:44):
flower and set seed, you just started the whole thing
all over again, and now you're dealing with hundreds of seeds.
So twofold one is if anything at all, don't ever
let them flower. If they grow, that's one thing, but
cut them off if you can't get it pulled out,
and second they get rid of them. Don't give up
on the weeds. Right now is a really good time

(04:05):
to walk around and just get rid of anything that
doesn't belong in any of your beds, because I tell you,
if you don't, next thing, you know it's fall, you're
not doing anything about it, and they're set for next year.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Yeah, they are. Another thing I'm finding is little seedlings
from other trees and other bushes growing in bushes. I'd
always find a little bit here and there. But it's
like in every bush there's a maple tree or a
Virginia creeper. There's just everything in there.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Well again, you know you're right elms. A lot of
the lace Park elms. I still get seeds from when
we had that went down about three years ago. They
still pop up. Red bud seeds. We get those everywhere.
Maples will pop up here and there. Pre emerging herbicides
sometimes don't do as good of a job on those
larger seeds seeds like that. They'll stop some of them,

(04:56):
maybe not all of them. So but the thing good
about those is you see one two, you know they
may be hard to pull out because you put a
nice little route out there, what easy to chop out.
Once you do, they're pretty well done.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
Sure sure, sure, you were talking about box woods on
your show, Ron, and I was down my son's house
and he has them up right against the wall of
the front of his house, and he's got four of
the most good looking box woods. I mean, is protection
with a house is that helpful? It can be, But

(05:29):
sometimes you get hurt. You if the rainfall doesn't get there. Well,
it's the backsize dry aut But yeah, that that foundation
gonna be a little bit of protection.

Speaker 2 (05:35):
Eh.

Speaker 1 (05:36):
Maybe he doesn't clean his gutters.
