(00:23):
your vehicle back on the road.Call five one three eight two nine ninety
thirty eight two nine ninety thirty onthe road again. Just can't wait to
get all the road again around arm. Good afternoon, and welcome to the

(00:58):
car show on fifty five k OSAD talk station. I'm Daned on Ovan
here every Saturday to answer your carquestions. The number to call five one
three seven nine fifty five hundred. That number again, five one three seven
nine fifty five hundred. It's anabsolutely gorgeous Saturday, and UH was just
made it in here. In fact, my producers called me like, hey,

(01:21):
where are you at? Uh?That's like I'm coming up the elevator
having some work done in the house, and the contractors were digging and they
said, hey, we found thispipe and we're gonna have to stop.
And we think it's a down spout. And I'm like, no, no,
no, We're We're good. Allthe down spouts have been replaced.
That's just an old but I foundit's really weird. It's it's just outside
my back door. We're having thislike a little concrete patio put in.

(01:42):
And I mean the child of thekitchens in the in the dirt, the
child all the bathrooms is in thedirt. They find ou all kind of
they found all kinds of stuff. It's just really weird about uh. I
think two years ago we had theconcrete replaced in our garage and they found
an old milk jug, like afifties milk jug. My house is built
nineteen fifty one, so it waspretty neat to find these things buried undergrounds.

(02:07):
Really really really cool. So allright again, I'm taking your phone
calls. Another call the number tocall five one three seven fifty five hundred.
I want to I like to speakon a topic that I've I've talked
about many times and we are gettinginto the days where it's starting to get
a little steamy, and um,you know, we're starting to turn on

(02:30):
the air conditioning, right, Ihad it on on the way here.
And but I do want to talkabout too, and I you know,
I won't hit on this too much, but I want to explain. I
had an incident yesterday and sometimes againI from the bottom of my heart,

(02:51):
I truly do enjoy what I whatI do. I do love what I
do, okay, And I doenjoy fixing cars and getting people back out
on the road. Okay. I'ma third generation business owner. My grandfather
started it, father took it over, and I take pride in what I
do, and sometimes that that pridesometimes can get in the way of and

(03:13):
get personal. Right. And Ihad an incident yesterday and I was I
was doing the best that I couldto try to explain how air conditioning works,
and this customer was just not havingit. And again I take it
it personal, as if it's kindof attack on me, right, because
I take pride in what I doin my name and my brand, right,

(03:34):
And I did the best that thevery best I could to try to
explain how it works on air conditioning. And I'm and I thought this would
be a good teaching point or atleast and and so here here, here,
here it goes. She brought avehicle in because she needed an oil

(03:58):
change, which is pretty standard.Right there's there shouldn't be any problems there,
and the air conditioning was not working. Now, in order for any
mechanic, any mechanic I don't carewho, I don't care if he's the
best mechanic in the world or not. Okay, in order to properly diagnose
and find out why the air conditioningis not working, we need to fill

(04:21):
it up with free on. Okay, we need to charge it up.
Okay. So the best analogy thatI could do is that if you had
an inner tube or a pool toythat took air right and that had a
hole in it, how would youfind out where that hole is? What
would you have to do? Youwould have to fill that inner tube or
that pool tool toy or whatever. You'd have to fill it up to find

(04:43):
out where that hole is. Okay, and free on is a gas,
it's not you know, if you'vegot an oil leak, we can figure
it out, because it's gonna makeit's gonna have a residue if it's leaking
transmission, if it's leaking cool,we're gonna be able to find that.
But free on is a gas,Okay, it leaks out and it you
don't know where it leaked out at. So what we have to do because

(05:04):
obviously, if the vehicle does nothave any free on in it, the
compressor is not going to turn on. So there would be absolutely no reason
to do anything else. Sorry,I'm hot to sneeze. There would be
no reason we could not We cannotfurther do our job until we know that
it is full of free on,Okay. And when we do this process,

(05:27):
we put a fluorescent dye in thesystem, Okay, so that we
use a black light. So typicallywhat we'll do is we'll charge it up,
put the dye in there. Nineout of ten times, the air
conditioning is perfectly working. Now thatfree on is not just it doesn't just
evaporate, doesn't just go away. It's not supposed to leak out. Okay,

(05:47):
there is a leak in the system. Now that system has several components.
Okay, you have an AC compressor, that's what's you know, pumping
the free on through the system. You have an evaporate so it goes from
the compressor through a line that couldbe leaked, you know, so the
compressor could be leaking, the linegoing to the evaporator could be leaking.

(06:10):
The evaporators behind the dash. It'skind of like a small heater core,
and the free on runs through throughthe evaporator and then your blower is what's
blowing that cold air into the vehicle. Okay, that can leak as well.
It then goes to the front ofthe vehicle to the condenser, which
is kind of like a radiator. It cools that free on, and then
it goes which can leak as well, which is in front of the radiator.

(06:33):
So any type of rocks, anydebris in the road can puncture and
put a hole in it. Itthen goes on a line to back to
the compressor and there's your full cycle. But if there's a hole somewhere in
the system, and again if thefree on leaked out, we don't know
where it went at. We don'tknow where it leaked out, so we

(06:54):
have to start this process now.In this particular situation, this customer was
upset because the compressor was replaced lastyear. And she said I needed to
it needed to be I should havegot more than a year out of it.
And I multiple times tried to explainthe system, and she just wouldn't

(07:19):
listen to me. And again Itake it personal because I'm not you know,
I'm not trying to pull one over, you know, pull the wool
of her eyes. This is I'veI did everything I did to try to
explain the system, and I justthought that today would be a teachable moment.
There are a lot of things,a lot of components that have to
do with the air conditioning. Sowhether you bring your car to Donovan's or

(07:40):
your your favorite repair shop, Iexplained it as best that I possibly could.
And so if you're find yourself onthe other end, not my end,
but on the other end and beinga being a customer and taking it
into our repair shop, and you'refrustrated because you've spent you know, X
amount of dollars to fix the airconditioning, I'm here to tell you that,

(08:03):
Listen, there are several other componentsand until we can do our tests,
there's not much more that we cando, and we have to start
there. And again, I dotake it a bit personal because I can't.
I can't do my job if Ican't fill the vehicle back up with
free on. And so I justthought again it was a teachable moment that

(08:26):
listen, the air conditioning is acomplex system. I know that we all
like to have air conditioning, butfar too often, and listen, at
every repairshon, every Donovans that youcome to, we will explain. The
way I'm explaining it on the airright now is the way we explain it
to you at Donovance. We don'tjust fill it up with free on Jorgia

(08:50):
one hundred and seventy five dollars andsay good luck, Chuck. No,
what we do is we we havethis conversation, we fill that up and
then say hey, in two weeksbring it back. There'll be no charge.
Let's get it back up in theair, and let's see if we
can find out where that die isleaking out at Sometimes most times it takes
one trip. Sometimes it could takeup to two or three trips because if

(09:11):
the evaporators leak in, that's behindthe dash can't see it, and it's
it's quite the process. So youknow, just if you're at a whether
you bring your vehicle dominance or youryour favorite repair shop. All I can
ask is that listen those you knowyour mechanic is there to help you out

(09:33):
and fix your vehicle. Okay.Is every mechanic shop honest? No,
probably not. I don't think inany circumstance in any business is every single
one honest. But when your name'son the building and your third generation,
I can assure you that we're nothere to pull the wool over your eyes

(09:54):
and take advantage of anybody. We'rehere just to fix your car. And
if you're happy with your MCA,can you trust your mechanic then just that
you know, then great, staywhere you're at, and and and if
you're confused or upset or don't understandor maybe not understand exactly what's going on,
they should be explaining it to youas best that they possibly can,

(10:16):
Okay, so that you understand andknow what it needs, what we need
to do in order to take careof your vehicle. Okay. Again,
I enjoy what I do, andI sometimes take it to heart when people
get upset with me because uh,they're maybe confused or don't understand h or
just sometimes just no way of pleasingthem. But I mean, it's all

(10:39):
part of the job. It's whetheryou're I'm working on cars or selling Hamburgers,
that's gonna happen. But I'm hereto say that if you if you
don't understand, you know, askquestions and uh that that you know,
because again it's important one to askquestions too. You know, we're here

(11:01):
to get you back out on theroad, to make sure that you're safe
and get you to your job orget you to your son's game. Right
I'm missing my son's baseball game rightnow. We're you know, we're here
to help you out and uh so, you know, try to cut us
a little bit of slack sometimes, you know, we are trying to do
our best cars. Sometimes it's notlike going to a doctor. We say,

(11:22):
hey, doc, my knee hurts. Right, It's not everything's always,
you know, black and white. You know, sometimes there's stages gray.
Sometimes there's things and procedures that wehave to do in order to figure
out what we need to do inorder to get your car taken care of.
So, all right, again, the number to call five one three,
seven fifty five hundred coming up.Our first question is it's an air

(11:43):
conditioning question. Believe it or not, but coming up, we've got Dave,
tab and Graham. You're listening tothe car show on fifty five KRC,
the talk station. This is fiftyfive KRC, an iHeartRadio station.
Cars have changed a lot since mydad opened donovan back in nineteen fifty eight,
and care has too, Hi DaleBottoman from Donovan's Auto entire Center.

(12:03):
From digital inspections to easy online appointmentscheduling, We've upped the car repair game
at Donovan's. But at the heartof it all, we deliver the same
promise, honest car repair that youcan rely on to keep your family safe,
your car maintained, and your wallethappy. Donovan's Auto entire Center three
locations, including the new Donovan's Autofour and your Xavier on Montgomery Road.
Schedule your appointment at Donovantyre dot com. We may not old ways agree,

(12:26):
but we can agree on one thing. Fifty five KRC is the talk station,
taking your car questions and number tocall five one, three, seven,
four nine fifty five hundred. Okay, I'm off my soapbox. I
just I feel like I've been talkingabout this for years and and you know,
it's just something that we have tohave a conversation about and maybe even

(12:48):
revisit right because you may have missedthat episode that I talked about it.
And again, it can be hfrustrating to people when they don't kind of
understand how that that the you know, the system works all right, but
our first question is first customer isa caller is Dave. It's got an
air conditioning question, Dave? Howare you hey? Dane's been a little

(13:11):
bit better. Yeah, I wasworking on a twenty oh seven keep Liberty.
I was trying to take the nutoff this low pressure air conditioner line
and the opened end ranch I wasusing the wrong end of it put a
little hole in the line. I'mwondering, can there be fixed with the
livingum brazing rids that I heard about? Yeah, goodness, that's a great

(13:39):
question. I you know, I'mI would think so. The problem is
those lines are kind of thin, and I don't know a ton about the
brazing. I mean I would certainly, I would try. Obviously, you
know that system's pressurized, but itshould be able to I mean typically if
it's at my shot, we're justgoing to replace the line. I mean,

(14:03):
what we don't have the means tobe able to do that. But
I mean, I would dave Itry it. I mean, I don't
think it's going to hurt anything, right, right, I've never heard of
anybody doing it. But again, just because I haven't heard it doesn't mean
it can't be done. I wouldthink in theory, yes, you could
do that. Okay, yeah, because I think something on the computer about

(14:24):
fixing. Other than that, it'sjust a small little tiny hole hole,
say with your eye, I reallymessed up there. Well you know it
can be fixed. Okay, butyeah, go ahead you before. I've
never seen it done that way.But again, what you know, what

(14:46):
I do. You know when whenyou got a problem like that, I'm
not going to just try to patchit. I'm going to just replace it
so it doesn't cause problems down theroad. Kind of back to my first
segment when I was talking about theair conditioning issue. I don't want to
do that. Send a customer outthe out the you know, down the
street, and six months later itdoesn't that repair doesn't hold, and then

(15:07):
they're bringing it back and you knowso, but I it's worth a shot.
Yeah, definitely is. You cantry it, But I've never heard
of anybody doing it. Okay,I appreciate your help. All right,
Dave, you take care man, have a great day, all right,
by bye. You know, I'msure that something like that can be done.

(15:30):
I mean I've seen some pretty innovative. I had a guy one time
I had was seeing a van andthe handle broke on the tailgate, right,
So instead of instead of replacing thehandle, because it's a cable type
handle, right, so obviously pullthe handle and it's a cable system kind
of like a pedal bike, right, So he just decided that he'd take

(15:52):
a pedal bike handle and screwed itin the trunk the tailgate and that was
a handle in order to open upthe tail so pretty I took a picture
of it too. I was like, that's pretty innovative. I've seen some
I've seen some wild things, andI'm like, that's pretty uh genius.
I mean there's a lot of thingsI've seen people do. It's like,
wow, that was a great idea. So all right again, taking your

(16:14):
phone calls and I'm recall five one, three, seven, four, nine
fifty five hundred. We're going togo to tab. Hey, tab,
welcome to the car show. Howcan I help. Yeah, Hi Dane,
love your show, calling from Maryland. Question. I'll actually question first
and be the brief background. So, if I suspect the battery, if
there's an issue with the battery ofthe alternator, should I disconnect the battery

(16:37):
and is it okay to leave itdisconnected for several days or until I determine
it. So here's what happened twothousand and two Ford Explorer about one hundred
and forty thousand miles A couple ofdays ago, went to cranket. You
could hear the starter, but itwouldn't turn over, so naturally I suspected
it's the battery. The battery isseven years old interstate battery, so okay,
didn't test anything, say okay,so I just went the OSCO,

(17:00):
bought another interstate battery, put itin there, ran fine that after I
used it to them. When Iwent yesterday to get on a short trip,
the red battery lights started flashing discontinuouslyand I could see things were starting
to dim. The voltmeter was dropping. So it's raced back home. I
wouldn't get stranded. So now,so going back to my question, what

(17:22):
should I do at this instance untilit's diagnosed what the issue is. So
typically, so typically if a batterylight is coming on or flashing, that
is an indication that the alternator isnot charging the battery. So sometimes people
can be confused that they see thatred battery light. They think sometimes it's

(17:45):
like, oh, I need abattery. But if the battery light was
coming on and everything was starting todim, basically the car was running off
the battery itself because the alternator wasnot charging the battery. Now, when
you were driving it, does ithave a gauge that shows the voltage of
the alternator? And where was thatat? Was it at twelve or fourteen?

(18:07):
It was like in the middle, and then then I was in an
ATM and then you know, there'sa betch red light was flashing that I
could just see. It was likeslowly slowly dropping and the lights and everything
was dimming, so I, youknow, it looked like it was just
gonna just stop. But the redlight did not flash at any point with
the old battery, you know,So even when I went to crank it

(18:30):
before I put in a new one, it just you could hear the starter,
but it wouldn't turn over. Sothe red light only started flashing after
I put it in, So presumabthe alternator may have not functioning when the
previous battery maybe I didn't even needto replace, but it was seven years
old. Yeah, yeah, sosometimes on boards and believe it or not,
this actually happened to me my Fordf one fifty. We were long

(18:56):
story short, my wife and Iand my my my cousin Kyle and his
wife. We're out of lake Houseand I can't remember it was but anyways,
long story short, We're driving itand all of a sudden, the
things starts shifting weird and I'm drivingand I said to my cousin, because
it was his truck at the time, I said, man, was this
thing shifting hard? And he goesno, And all of a sudden I
started and I lost my air conditioning, and then all of a sudden,

(19:18):
I lost my radio, and I'mlike, oh, man, no battery
light on, no warning, nothing, So I coasted into a gas station
and of course, certainly boom, batteries dead. So what I think was
going on, the reason that thebattery was probably dead was because the alternator
wasn't charging when you parked it right, and it was basically running on the
battery and it just didn't give youany signs. And then you put a

(19:41):
battery in it, and now thebattery lights flashing, so that voult that
the gauge should be at It shouldbe reading fourteen and the car is running,
it should be at fourteen. Nowthere's a simple test that you can
run. You could take it toany repair shop. You could even take
it to a local you know, yeah, parts facility that sells parts and

(20:03):
just have them test it again. It should be underload, you know,
it should be around fourteen point onefourteen point two volts. If it's thirteen
or blow, it's it's not doingits job and you need to replace that
alternator. I don't I don't thinkyou have a I don't think you have
a you know, an electrical draw. I just think the alternator is is

(20:26):
it's probably the original from blowing thecar. It's two thousand and two and
cars in good conditions, so it'sI'm sure I bought it from one neighbor.
But so let me ask you thisbefore I in the meantime to avoid
any damage to the new battery, should I disconnected? Yeah, you could
do that both terminals terminal No,you don't need no, just no,

(20:48):
you don't need to do both, just just one. It doesn't matter which
one positive or negative. So typicallywhen installing a battery, it always should
be positive of off first, thenthe negative of I'm sorry, yeah,
yeah, I'm sorry. You shoulddo the radio show for me. Yeah,

(21:10):
negative off first, then the positiveand then positive when installing it,
positive on and then the negative, because what will happen is if you don't
disconnect the negative. Let's just sayyou're you know, you're taking the positive
off first, and you you've gota big long ratchet and you touched some
piece of metal, you're gonna getsparked. So yeah, negative off first
one, taking the battery off,and then the positive and then putting it

(21:32):
back in positive back on, andthen negative. So but no, you
don't need to disconnect both, justone. Just disconnect the negative and you'll
be you'll be finding it at leastsave the battery if there is an electrical
drop. However, again, ifthe old if it's an alternator issue,
whether you disconnected or not, it'snot gonna save the battery, you know.
So, but I just didn't wantanything with the new battery. That's

(21:52):
that's all I would just say Idon't want it to because you know it's
one of the security system and andall that. One last thing then on
that, uh, are you okaywith like a used refurbished alternator? Oh
yeah, so with it? Yeah, with it being an O two,
that's probably all that you're going tofind as a reman what we just call
it reman or remanufactured. I don'thave a problem with it. I would.

(22:14):
I would. It depends on it. It depends on what's available out
there. I would tell you thatif you could, if it's available,
you might pay a little bit more. If you could get a motorcraft re
manufactured. One motorcraft is you knowwho makes four parts. If you could
get a motorcraft remanufactured, I woulddo that. If that's not If that's
not an option, just you youprobably could still find a new one,

(22:40):
but new or remanufactured. Either way, I think you're gonna be perfectly fine.
I but just do yourself a favor. Are you going to do the
work yourself? No? No,No, I got somebody who could do
it for I always tell people,if you're doing the work yourself, spend
the extra money and buy a goodpart. But if you know, if
you're not and you need to,you know, it's a no. Two

(23:02):
and you're like, man, Ijust need to get a couple more months
out of this thing. You know, you can put a cheap part in
it. But sometimes, I meanthere's been times I had a subrew years
ago. We had to put fouralternators on this suber before we got a
good one. No, I'm goingto keep the car till it diet get
a good quality part. If youcould get a motocraft if not, you

(23:23):
know, yeah, So all right, I appreciate the information. Good,
thank you, all right, thankyou, bye bye. Man calling all
the way from Maryland, So allright, taking your phone calls and never
to call five one, three, seven, four nine, fifty five hundred
coming up. We've got Graham andDave. You're listening to the Car Show
on fifty five KRC, the talkstation. Do you have a truck,

(23:44):
camper, r V or trailer thatneeds body repair? If so, call
my buddy Dave Breakman at Frank's HeavyTruck Collision Repair, located just All five
seventy five or Route sixty three. It's convenient to both Cincinnati and Date.
With over thirty years of experience, including insurance work and fleetwork. Franks knows
the most important things or quality worker, customer satisfaction. Frank's Heavy Truck Collision
Repair prides themselves in doing the jobright and get in your vehicle back on

(24:07):
the road. Call five one threeeight two nine ninety thirty eight two nine
ninety thirty. Some may not wantto hear what you have to say,
but we do. Fifty five krzthe talk station taking your car questions.
The number call five one three sevenfour nine fifty five hundred. That number
game five one three seven four ninefifty five hundred. Uh. I'm just

(24:30):
watching something on online. Pretty uh, pretty funny. So sometimes you know,
sometimes, I mean, for themost part, I try to stay
off social media, but every oncein a while, you know, uh,
you see something that's pretty funny.Uh, so you know it takes
uh, I don't know it wasfunny. So anyways, all right,

(24:51):
let's go back to the phones. We've got Graham. Hey Graham, welcome
to the car show. How canI help? Well, I have an
them in Cadillac Eldorado. I puta new battery in it. I did
the positive cable first, then thepositive cable seemed a little lose, so

(25:15):
I went to tight knit and gotagainst the metal part. Sparks flew.
Well, I'll kicked to you afew blocks under the hood over on the
traverer's side. I can't find anythingblown there. But I don't have a
bit of power anywhere. Everything's dead. Uh uh shoot that I was just

(25:38):
talking about that to the to thelast guy that you got to be careful
when you do that. Yeah.Uh so it's close, right, and
that's why. Yeah, take thatnegative lot. So all right, so
you know you've checked every few Imean, how bad when the sparks flying.

(26:00):
Was it just like just a smallinstance or was it something that was
it was just a small astent.Yeah, okay, I'm sure it probably
scared you. With all sparks flying. Well, you blew something. We
got to figure out the problem. The problem is is I mean, did

(26:25):
you check all the fuses in therelays because a lot of times, I
mean, you know, you couldstart a relay meaning I mean, so
you've got you have nothing, nopower, nothing, nothing, not even
a interior light, no radio, nothing that everything day. Yeah, okay,
so you blew thick some of themetal. Couple of metal fuses,

(26:49):
you know, for community, andthen they seem to be okay, you
know, I mean, are youpulling the fuses out and checking to make
sure that you don't see any ofthem blown? Yeah? Yeah, I
even checked them. Was a majorYeah. Oh he did. Okay,
good, good, good for you. H Well, I I think you'll

(27:10):
be fine. You're gonna have tojust find is there a Is there a
diagram a fuse diagram on the backof the fuse the cover? Yeah?
There is? Yeah, Okay,I think maybe it may possibly be a
fuse boxes in the trunk area.I don't know if well, yeah,

(27:32):
I mean you're you're there's gonna bea fuse box inside, not necessarily the
trunk, but it's typically they're gonnalocate it underneath the driver side. It's
gonna be either the driver's side kickpanel like where your left foot would be,
or on the passenger side down bythe kick panel. Most of them.

(27:52):
I do know that some older Cadillacstoo, they would have a fuse
box that was accessible through the glovebox. Okay, now you could.
There's gonna be another one. There'smost vehicles where are going to have an
exterior one under the hood and thenone on the inside. Now, typically
your relays and your main relays andmain fuses are gonna be under located under

(28:15):
the hood. Doesn't mean that youcouldn't have blown a fuse inside the vehicle,
but I would I would. Iwould bet that it's underneath the hood.
So yeah, I'm almost certain,you know, I don't think.
I don't think that you fried anythingto the point where you know there's major

(28:36):
damage here. I just think youprobably blew up you know, forty or
fifty amp few or amp fuse andsometimes too. I've seen fuses though.
You'll look at them and they evenlook like they're not blown, and they
are. So you know, sometimesthat might be one of those things where
I don't know what your capability is, but it might be one of those

(28:56):
things where you're just gonna have tostart either replacing each fuse or in relay
or uh. It could be prettyIt can be pretty hard to try to
track that down, you know.I wish I could give you better advice,
but without seeing it, it's reallyhard to know exactly which one was
was blown. But yeah, therewas a couple of the relays under the

(29:21):
pears cover, and so I don'tknow. I have no way of checking
them. I guess it's just well, here's what, Well, here's what
I tell you to do. Alot of your main relays. They're typically
the same in the sense that youcould take the starter relay and you know,
the main relay or what, andyou can swap them, okay,

(29:45):
if they if they're pronged the sameway that all the other relays are.
So sometimes if you don't have accessibilityto replace all the relays, just you
can swap if they will fit right, if they're pronged the same way,
you can swap really and just seeif things change. Right. So let's
just say, for instance, yourmain relay and your started relay look identical,
that the same, and you swapthem, and now you've got power,

(30:07):
but the car still won't start.Well that that potentially it means that,
hey, that relay you just switchedto the starter relay, that's why
it won't start because that relay thatyou just swapped is bad. So and
and relays for the most part, you can get that at any local you
know, especially with the age, whether it be in ninety seven, I

(30:30):
mean, you can be able tofind it relay at you know AutoZone or
any parts places. But again,if they're the same, you could start.
You could swap those relays and seeif anything changes. If things change,
then you know you're on the rightpath. Okay, all right,
but I'll give it another trend.See what I come up with. All
right, well, I appreciate thenif you, if you, if you,

(30:52):
when you do figure out, youcall me back. I want to
hear what which what fuseer relay? It was all right? Okay, well,
all right, thanks to have agreat weekend. All right, bye
bye. That's the thing about electricalissues. It's just why we're talking about
changing batteries. That gentleman from MarylandI was talking about putting you know,
how to take that battery off,and I see you gotta be careful.
And I didn't. I screwed itup. But you know, again,

(31:17):
if you're replacing your own battery, which anybody can do, but you gotta
be careful, especially with these newervehicles, you do something ever so slightly
and you can blow the main fuseor relay. So again, if you're
doing your own battery, you takethe negative cable off first, then the
positive right, so as soon asyou take the negative off, because again,

(31:40):
anything metal in the vehicle is goingto be grounded, right, So
when you go take that negative off, now you've now anything in that vehicle
that's grounded. So if you're you'reyou're going to take a ranch and we're
and and disassembled or take apart thepassenger side, right, if you touch
any metal, you're not blowing anything, right, and then you put the
positive back on first and then thenegative. Okay, every car is pretty

(32:05):
standard now now on a ninety sevenEldorado, and it's gonna be pretty simple
to me underneath the hood, man, I tell you what where they slam
these batteries in nowadays? I mean, uh, it's it's a nightmare.
It's it's not one of those thingsthat you can do yourself. You know.
There's there's I think the most complicatedone is is the Mercedes SUVs.

(32:27):
You have to remove the passenger sideseat in order to replace the battery.
And I think it's like it's likeit's like six hundred and fifty seven hundred
and fifty dollars to replace that battery. Okay, some of them they put
them in the back seat, someof them put them in the trunk.
I mean, we had a Jettaor I'm sorry, a Volkswagen the other
day. You know, the wholetrunk's got to come apart, spar's got

(32:50):
to come out, all the foamaround it's got to come out, and
then there's a metal plate that's gotto come out. You know, it's
three hundred and fifty dollars to puta battery in this thing. And the
other day she goes, I rememberwhen batters used to be thirty five bucks.
She said, I haven't had toreplace a battery in fifteen years.
I'm like, well, prices havechanged in fifteen years, especially on these
new on this new stuff. Imean, I had a young lady in

(33:14):
yesterday. There was a thirteen BMWI think it was a five series BMW.
Okay, it's a thirteen and herheadlight is not working. Okay,
headlight's not working, and so whyis it not working? Well, the
seal around the headlight had water andit was leaking. It leaked water into

(33:35):
the headlight. And you know allthese fancy cars nowadays, you know they
have the headlights that will move asyou go uphills, and they do everything
but drive the car, right, say Anyways, long story short called water
gets into the headlight. Headlight's notworking in the water that's in the headlight
goes into there's two modules computers thatget water intrusion them in as well.

(33:58):
So not only do I have toreplace that's the headlight, that's twenty two
hundred dollars, and I had toreplace both modules that were seven hundred dollars,
plus remove the bumper in order toinstall this. And then guess what,
even if you do all this, guess what's still not gonna work?
Why because the module has to havethe ven it So you have to have
a computer in order to talk tothe car so that the headlight will work.

(34:22):
Okay, so it's five thousand dollarsfor this lady to replace just one
headlight just so our headlight would work. Five thousand dollars. Now, most
people go, We'll watch you puta used one in it? Right,
Well, well, here's what BMWdoes when they when they put these vehicles,
when they put these parts in there, they do they burn the ven

(34:44):
into the module, meaning that evenif you take a used one out.
So if I go to a Junkyardand buy used when I put it in,
guess what's still not gonna work. And you go, okay, well
Dan, we'll just program it tothe car. Well, guess what you
can't because BMW burns the ven inyou can't do it. So you can't
put a used one in it.You can't put an aftermarket one in it.
All you could do is buy BMW'stwenty two hundred dollars headlight and there's

(35:07):
seven hundred dollars modules and the threehundred dollars to program it. So again,
five thousand dollars just to get thisyoung lady's headlight to work. And
I mean it's that's a thirteen.Can you imagine what it's gonna be like
on these twenty twenty fours. It'sI'm telling you that's why I've harped on
it. I've harped on it,and I'm telling you this again. You

(35:28):
got an old car, keep it, keep it and running into the ground.
I mean, I drive an Oseven Ford F one fifty and my
wife was driving an eleven Yukon andI contemplated getting rid of it. And
I've been driving it because this newstuff is just it. It's just great.
The technology is great, you know. I mean, you get in
your car and you man, youfeel you feel like a million bucks.

(35:50):
It runs great, and then yourheadlight what's working, and then all of
a sudden it costs you five thousanddollars. You know, It's just it's
one of those things that, oh, man, I think it's gonna get
a lot worse before it gets better. So anyways, all right, the
number to call five one three sevenfour nine fifty five hundred. That number
gain five one three seven four ninefifty five hundred. You listening to our
show on fifty five krc DE talkstation. Cars have changed a lot since

I do that every week. Ijust try to my mouth is moving faster

(37:00):
than my mind is, or viceversa. I don't know, but I
just screaming those numbers out and Ido that every week every week. You
think, Dan, you've been doingthis for for umpteen years. You think
you'd figure it out by now,but no, I still screw it up.
But anyways, all right, soagain there's UH phone lines are wide
up and we do have roughly aboutseven minutes. So if you do have

(37:22):
a question, love to hear it. I'd love to see if there's anything
I can do for you to goback to. And I don't want to,
you know, keep you know, beating this dead horse here, but
you know we're getting into UH workwas a little soft this week, and
I think, you know, youknow, you sometimes wonder like what's going

(37:45):
on right, What's what's going on? I just think that everybody's you know,
I know, my boys there lastweek is or their last day is
Friday, right, So getting intoI just think everybody's just kind of buckling
down there, focusing on getting toschool years done, getting that all finalized
so that they can start looking inthinking about summer. Right, and luckily,

(38:07):
you know, it hasn't gotten toohot yet. I mean, lord
knows, we've had way more rain. I don't know. I feel like
we've had a lot more rain thatwe typically do. But with again,
which comes with you know a lotof vehicles that have water intrusion problems,
right, and we don't at Donovan's. We don't excuse me, I was

(38:30):
sneezing for some reason. I haveallergies when I get into the the studio.
I guess I'm allergic to the studio. I don't know. But you
know, that's one thing that atDonovans we don't necessarily focus on, is
water leaking into vehicles. But guesswhat, I got a guy that does.
And you can bring it to anyof our Donovan's locations if the vehicle's

(38:52):
leaking water, and I can getit fixed for you. Right, we
don't do it, but I gota guy that does that. It comes
to me, he fixes it,and wait, far cheaper than I am
right, and so it's a windfor everybody, right, you just bring
your carda Donovans. That's one thing. So if you've got water on the
passenger side or driverside floor mats,I will tell you something that you could

(39:14):
potentially do yourself. If you havea sunroof, your sunroof has drains,
and those drains can get plugged upwith leaves, dirt, debris, pine
needles or whatnot. And a lotof times if you open up that sunroof,
you'll see those drains are gonna belocated towards the front of the sunroof,
close to the front of the vehicle, right, And you know you

(39:36):
could if you want to just graba bottle of water and pour that water
down those drains. If you seethat water make it all the way down
to the ground, then your sunrooftrains are cleared. And that's not why
water's getting into your vehicle. Okay, However, if that water does not
hit the ground and maybe even comesup, and we know our sunroof trains
are nine, I would say nineout of ten times a vehicle comes to

(40:00):
me that is getting water on thepassenger side or driver side floor mat nine
at ten times it's the sun roofdrains. Okay, not all the time,
but most of the time. Soyou know, parking your car underneath
the tree can really clog those things. You wouldn't think about it right sealed.

(40:20):
You would think, oh, youknow that that can't be happened,
That couldn't happen to me. Butit does. It happens all the time.
There's not a single week goes byI'm not dealing with somebody with water
inside their vehicle. Uh. Infact, I got a text message on
Wednesday, Hey Dane, I'm gettingI'm getting water my passenger side floor.
Can you take a look at it? So he's gonna bring it in on
Tuesday, and it happens quite abit. I would tell you though,

(40:43):
too, you need to make surethat if you are getting water in the
inside of the vehicle, you reallyshould take care of that matter really quickly.
Because most of your manufacturers, especiallyyour OUTI, your BMW or Volkswagen,
what they put all the computers inall modules. Guess where they put
them on the floor of the vehicle. So guess what when you get water

(41:05):
in there? Where you think thatwater does it goes into the modules?
Does thousands upon thousands of dollars ofdamage. Okay, I see it all
the time. So you would thinkthat they would keep them off the ground,
off the floor of the vehicle, but they don't. They put them
wherever they can they can fit themright. So if you are getting water
in the passenger side floors, becauseagain with all this rain that we've gotten,

(41:29):
luckily knock on wood, I'm notgetting any uh water in my vehicles,
just in my basement. So gettingthat looked at, trying to get
that fixt. I've got two somepumps and I still get water in my
basement. It's just h it neverfails. Home Ownership's great. But also
again, you know, if you'replaying a trip for summer, you need
to get the car in not thatyou know, far too often we get

(41:52):
these vehicles that people were calling daysbefore they leave, and you need to
plan properly and think about if you'regoing on a trip, you need to
call your mechanic or call Donovan's atleast two weeks prior just to get it
looked at, because there might bepart that's not available we can't get Nobody
wants to be on a family roadtrip and break down, and I talked

(42:17):
about my son's baseball coach. Theirwhole family packed up brand new twenty twenty
three Yukon going down to Florida.Guess what they break down thirteen thousand miles
the engine locks up. I talkedabout this earlier. So GM finally replaces
the engine and guess what, shegets it back for about a week,

(42:37):
and the thing just keeps breaking downon or breaking down our Well, there
was some type of electrical issue andit was just a it's an utter nightmare,
right, So when they put theengine in, they didn't have all
the electronics properly attached. So finallyshe gets it back to the dealer and
she gets back luckily, so farso good, knock on, Well,

(43:00):
no, you know, but shegets it back last weekend, and last
weekend we're at my We were upin Columbus for a baseball tournament, and
of course it was planned on Mother'sDay. So either either a woman plans
that because they just want the kidsto be not at home, or a
guy plans it and doesn't think aboutMother's Day. But it's always on Moursday

(43:21):
weekend. So anyway, she literallygets her car back, she gets it
back on Friday up there in Columbusand Sunday where we've got a game Sunday
morning, and darn if she didn'tpark behind the dugout and guess where she
got a big old She gets hercar back and two days later she's got
a massive dent right in the centerof her hood. So I'm like,

(43:44):
you just need to get rid ofthat thing is nothing, but that thing
has just been nothing but problems. But that's you know, you should not
have these types of problems with twentythree thousand or I'm sorry I had twenty
twenty three with thirteen thousand miles. It's just something that you should have to
be worrying about, right Ah man, oh well, it's life, right,
it's frustrating. So all right, well listen everybody, have a wonderful,

(44:07):
splendid weekend. I'll be back nextweek to answer all of your car
questions again if you've got a carquestion, and if you if you didn't
want to call in today, that'sfine. You can always call me at

Montgomery Road in Dana. It is. It was formerly Auto Foreign is now
