Speaker 1 (00:08):
On the road again. Just can't wait to get on
the road again. You have done.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Good afternoon, and welcome to the car show on fifty.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
Five k r C.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
I am Dane Donovan, your host from Donovan's Auto entire Center,
here every Saturday to answer all of your car questions again,
whether it pertains to repair or maybe a guidance as
to maintenance or guidance as to hey, Dane.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
What kind of vehicle should I buy?
Speaker 2 (00:51):
I am here again every Saturday, again Dane Donald from
Donovan's Auto entire Center, and love to hear from you.
So the number to call five one three seven four
fifty five hundred. That number getting five to one three
seven four nine fifty five hundred. My wonderful producer text me,
I was on the ball today, and I give myself
(01:12):
a clap on the back. I was on the ball today.
That's usually not not it doesn't always happen. But I
got up at seven o'clock this morning decided that I
was gonna order a second set of headphones, just to
make sure that I don't forget mine.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Ever, I'm gonna leave one here at the studio. I'm
gonna hide it.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Though headphones are headphones are almost you can't find them
around the studio, so I'm gonna have to hide them somewhere.
But I bought a pair this morning. Gotta love the
power of Amazon. I ordered them about seven o'clock this
morning and it said one day delivery, and I'm like, okay, man,
maybe might be able to use them for the radio
(01:50):
show today. And in two and a half hours there
at my front door. I mean, you want to talk
about speeding. I mean two and a half hours, seven o'clock,
laying in bed, order some headphones, and boom, nine thirty
at my front door.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Oh man, you gotta love that stuff.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
But not all life works that way, right, you know,
sometimes you have to wait a little bit longer. I've
waited longer to sit down and have a meal again
to order some head from some Amazon.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
And so it was.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
It was pretty quick.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
But I do have a backup set of headphones, so
I should not.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Forget them anymore.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
So again, taking your phone calls, and don't recall five one, three, seven,
fifty five hundred again here every Saturday. Love to hear
from you any car question you may have. Love to
hear from you. So I do want to talk about uh,
something that is a little bit disturbing. And you know,
(02:50):
you know, this show is about your cars, not political
at all, but it was.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
It was ironic.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
I was on social media and the number one vehicle
sold in twenty twenty four was the Tesla model. Why okay,
that's the number one vehicle sold and for twenty twenty
four Now the next was I think the Corolla and
so on and so forth. And there's a lot of
(03:17):
great manufacturers out there. And had a customer this week
just to say, hey, hey, Dane, what's your opinion on
the Tesla? And you know, I they haven't been around
long enough for me to form an opinion.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
I do tend to lean towards them. I do like them.
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
I mean, if you're you know, putting around town, you're
just going back and forth to work, I think they're great.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
Obviously, if you've got.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
To drive to Florida or on a long trip and
you have to stop and charge it, or if it's
extremely cold weather, it loses its battery power and it
doesn't last as long. So I think if you were
going to use it as a toy or an alternative,
that's fine. I don't know, so that I don't know
that I could have one and drive it daily. That's
(04:04):
just my opinion. Everybody's intited in their own opinion. That's
just mine, you know, especially in these conditions right up
here in Cincinnati around the russ Belt, right if you're
down in Florida whatnot.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
I think they're fine. I think they're great.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
I don't I don't really see any issues with them.
But I had a conversation with my wife earlier this
week and she was stating that there was a colleague
that she works with and they have a cyber truck,
Tesla cyber truck, and multiple times they've taken it out
and when they come back out to their car, people
(04:38):
have defamed them. I have, you know, put nasty letters,
nasty notes about, you know, because of the whole political stuff.
And it's just like, wait a minute. Two years ago,
everybody was praising electric In fact, there was there was,
you know, credits that you could get if you bought
an electric car. Everybody said it was the best thing.
(05:01):
And since you know slice bread, I mean it was
it was. They were awesome and and everybody was buy them.
And again in twenty twenty four, it was the number
one vehicle sold. And again, part of the conversation that
I had with my wife, she's like, well, they don't
even want to take it out anymore because every time
(05:22):
they take it out, they get nasty, you know, nasty
messages and their car, you know, being you know, messed with,
just simply because you know, because of the whole political
spectrum of it. And it's just like, come on, guys,
I mean, two years ago, everybody loved them. Now all
of a sudden, you know, so you know, we need
(05:42):
to all get along. We need to all make sure
that you know, the car doesn't make you know our country. Okay,
you know they're important. We need them, we need them
to get back and forth to work. But nobody should
have to be shamed because of the type of car
that they.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Right, and again I don't own one. I you know,
if you do own one.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Grade if you don't, great, I mean there's no I
don't have any bias to it.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
It's just we need to all get along.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
There's no reason why you can't go out and just
drive a vehicle. There should be no political bias. But
you know, behind a vehicle that you drive, it's nonsense.
We need to all get along, and we need to
make sure that you know, we you know, we just
come together as a country and make sure that you know,
we all can just go out and enjoy ourselves and
(06:36):
have fun.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Right.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
That's so it was a little bit upsetting, but you know,
it's the number one car and again, we all need
to get along. I want everybody to have fun. I
want everybody to you know, get along, and it's important.
So it was a story that you know, again, my
wife and I were talking about and I'm like, you
know what I'm going to talk about that just you know,
it doesn't matter what vehicle you drive, It really doesn't.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
What what's in important.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Is how you maintain it and that it can get
you from point A to point B, and that you
can drive it safely and that you maintain it.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
That's what this is about.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Okay, So you got to make sure that we all again,
you know, it's just I just felt that it was
it was a bad part of you know, a bad
part of time that we you know, shouldn't have to
not drive a vehicle because of political nonsense.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
This is that's ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
You know, all get along and we all need to
make sure that we take care of each other and
as a country, we work as a team, right. I mean,
I tell all of my employees it's a team effort
and we got to make sure that we all get along.
And you know, so I just thought it was it
was just it was disappointing, and I just want everybody
(07:51):
out there to know that again, this is not this
is about cars.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
But somebody who can't drive.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Their vehicle because of you know it be in defaiate
because of who owns the company is nonsense. You know,
we all get along. We should all get along and
make sure that you can you can drive your vehicle
and not have to, you know, be shamed because of it.
So all right again, taking your phone calls and don'verall
five one, three, seven, five hundred.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
Let's go to George. We Hey, George, welcome to the
car show. How can I help?
Speaker 3 (08:23):
Well, I have a twenty eleven buif Lacrosse twenty six
thousand miles on it, and every time when I shift
that gear on park, it tells me shifts the box
and one turn out and then I have to do
it a few times, three times, four times, and then
we'll do it byself.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
So what's going on with that is there there's a
what's what we call like a selector switch. So there's
a switch that's inside the shift or assembly that shows
the vehicle in park. And that switch itself is bad.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Okay, So.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Unfortunately, most of the time you cannot just buy that switch.
You have to buy the entire shifter or assembly. Now,
let me ask you something. Is the shifter a column
shift or is it a center console shift?
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Like? Is it?
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Is it right in the you know, right between both
front seats.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
It's a flow shift, it's a for shifter.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
It's between both seats.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
Yeah, okay, So that selector switch in the shifter is bad,
so you need to replace the the Unfortunately, the entire
shift or assembly because you can't just buy the switch.
You gotta buy the whole shift or assembly. So it
needs a shifter you're gonna have to buy. You're gonna
(09:48):
have to buy that from the dealer. Unfortunately, with it
being on eleven, there might be issues where you it's discontinued,
you can't find one.
Speaker 1 (09:59):
You might have to find an aftermarket one or a
used one.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
But the reason why you have to keep putting it
in because that switch that's in that shifter assembly is
not seeing the shifter in park. That's why it won't
shut the vehicle off. So it needs a shifter assembly.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
Okay, So call the dealer see if they have one,
if it's available.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
If not, you're gonna have to either find an alternative
out as far as far as like a used one,
or find an aftermarket one. I'm you know, aftermarket should
be your last resort. I would go, if you can't
find one new, see if you can find one used.
If you can't find one used, then try to find
an ald, you know, a aftermarket one.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
But that's what you're gonna need to do.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
How expensive is that?
Speaker 1 (10:47):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (10:48):
I mean they they range in price, but I would
say the shifter itself.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
I mean, they could be anywhere three to.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
Four hundred dollars and north of that, but I would
probably say for two, three, four, five hundred dollars. There's
gonna be a guestimate. I mean they're all different. But
and then you got to take the whole console out
to replace it, so they can I mean it can
get pricing. You know, it's you probably bring it to
(11:17):
a repair shop. You're gonna probably pay eight hundred to
one thousand bucks to replace it.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
But so that's that's what we're dealing with.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
All right, well, thank you you take care again.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
This this is the thing about these vehicles, and again
they have all these mic what they call micro switches, right,
this switch that tells the car that it's in park,
the car, you know, the switch that tells the convertible
top that it's down, the switch that tells the vehicle
that you're depressing the brake pedal.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
I mean, these all.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Switches, you know, they they they will fail at times
and that's the result of it. And again it depends
on the situation. But I have not found a shifter
assembly where you can replace just the micro switch. You
have to replace the whole shift or something. That's just
how they sell it. That's just how they sell them.
(12:08):
That's period. So already taking your phone calls, and I'm
gonna call five one, three, seven, four nine, fifty five,
one hundred coming up. We have Tim, Tom and Jeff.
You listen to the car show on fifty five KRC
the talk station.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
This is fifty five KRC and iHeartRadio station.
Speaker 5 (12:25):
Do you have a truck, camper, RV or a trailer
that needs body repair. If so, call my buddy Dave
Breakman at Frank's Heavy Truck Collision Repair located just All

Speaker 1 (13:02):
Station taking your car questions.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Again the number to call five one, three seven nine
fifty five hundred. I'm Dame Donovan from Donovan's Auto Entire Center.
And again, if you're in the trist the Ohio Cincinnati
tri state area again, you can go to Donovanentire dot
com and find your nearest location. We'd love to take
care of your vehicle and give you an honest opinion
(13:29):
on how we can fix your car and get you
back out on the road so you can deal with
other headaches as far as work or colleagues.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Or your kids.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Right, I have three boys as you guys, you know, no,
and we have to travel sports around all the time.
And we are luckily I'm knocking on wood here, we're
in a transition period where we're just finished basketball and
we're just about to start based one of the boys,
two order boy started baseball practice in November of last year.
(14:04):
They started conditioning November of last year. So but I mean,
they're not too crazy, right, and once we get into
the baseball season, we'll we'll probably have two or three,
four or five six practices a week, not to mention
the games. And the last thing that you need is
is you know your car breaking down or it won't
start or whatnot, right, so you want to make sure
(14:26):
that you're getting it taken care of. So that's what
I'm here for, and that's what Donovan's Auto Entire Center
wants to do is help you get your car back
out on the road safely and make sure that it's
you know, maintained properly. So again, donovantire dot com, you
can find your nearest location if you're in the Ohio
tri state area. And uh again, here every Saturday. So
(14:47):
if you have a car question, I'd love to hear
from you. Please give me a call again. Five one
three seven. All right, let's go back to the phones.
We've got Tim.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Hey, Tim, how are you? Tim? How can I help?
Speaker 7 (14:58):
I'm doing pretty good? How are you?
Speaker 3 (15:00):
I'm oh?
Speaker 7 (15:00):
I got a well, oh that's good. Okay. I got
a twenty fourteen Chevy Malibu LTC Echo with a one
hundred and fifty five thousand miles on it, and I've
got a code for a catalytic converter saying low catalyst efficiency.
But how do I know if the cat is really bad?
Because when it was cold, my check engine light would
intermittently be off or on, never flashing, just either off
(15:23):
or on. So some days I'd go out to start
the car and go somewhere and the check engine light
would no longer be on. In other days, the check
engine light would be on. So I was like, is
this an electrical problem or is my cat really dad?
Because I just got the World Change the other day
and I got this code at the dealer.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
Okay, great question.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
So here here here's what we so the catalog converter, obviously,
the catalyt converter for those of for those listeners that
don't know what it does.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
It acts as a furnace. So any unburned fuel.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
That does not get burned off in the combustion chamber,
it goes into the converter and it burns off in there. Okay,
there's platinum and all kinds of metals. You also have
oxygen sensors. You have two oxygen sensors. Some cars have four,
some have six. It depends on the vehicle, but most
likely on the malth But is yours a four cylinder
or six cylinder.
Speaker 7 (16:16):
It's a four cylinder. It's a two point five liter
Eco Tech.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Okay, I'm sorry you said that. I apologize.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
So you've got a converter, so I'm sorry. So you've
got an oxygen sensor that tests the fuel that's in
the exhaust when it leaves the combustion chamber, right leaves combustion,
right test it. Any unburned fuel will go into the converter,
and again it acts as a furnace. It'll burn that
fuel off and then you've got another oxygen sensor that
will test it again and if it still has fuel
(16:45):
in it, then it'll tell the car. Hey, listen, we
need to use less fuel, right, so it keeps the
car running as fuel efficient and and mission wise the best.
Speaker 4 (16:55):
So I don't know if this helps, but sometimes when
I run the heat sometimes I'll get, like if I'm
stopped at a light or whatever, I'll get like a
rich fuel smell.
Speaker 7 (17:05):
So I don't know if that has anything to do
with this or not.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
It could is the so you said the check ins
in line is on, but the only code that you
have is a PO four twenty.
Speaker 7 (17:16):
I've got another code too for the map sensor m
AP sensor, and another code for goodness, there was one
other code. Now I can't remember what that was because
I don't have the paper with me, but okay, anyway, yeah,
so map sensor catalyst system low efficiency, and then there
was one other one.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
Okay, so here's here's what I want. I don't think
you have an electrical iss as far as a cat goes.
You know, those two oxygen sensors are regulating kind of
what that CATALYG converter does, right, So what I want
to see you do is we need to find out
exactly what that other code is, the map sensor code.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
So if there's if there's too much.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
I remember, it was the EVAP system, That's what it was.
It was the EVAP system code. Okay, something about the
EVAPP system not doing something it's supposed to do.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
Okay, so it probably you know, it's it's probably has
It probably has a small EVAPP leak, which is very
very common. You've got multiple components of the EVAP system
that can cause that. I don't want you to do
anything as far as the converter goes. I think we
need to address the EVAPP here. Here's here's the deal
on an EVAP code, which is the evaporative emission system.
Speaker 1 (18:29):
Right, So any.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
Type of fuel that is you know, you know your
gas tank when you're you know, that gas is sloshed around.
Your tank is pressurized, right, So you've got what's called
a charcoal cancer that filters those fumes, and then you
have what's called a cancer vent valve, which once that
pressure builds up enough, that vent valve will then send
the fumes, not fuel, but fumes to.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
What's called the purge valve. The purge valve.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Will then dump those fumes into the intake so that
they can be burned and go out the tailpipe. Okay,
so if the vent valve or the perge valve is bad,
it's gonna be sending unnecessary fumes into the engine, which
could cause you know, a catalytic converter code.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
So I think we want to it's it's a possiblity.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
I'm i'd saying that's that's your problem, but I think
we need to address.
Speaker 1 (19:17):
The EVAP code. Okay.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
We also need to address the the map sensor which
is manifold absolute pressure sensor, right, we need to address
that as well. Converters are very very expensive, and they
can be very finicky, and they can.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
Throw those two sensors off.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Because again, if the vent valve or perge valve is
bad and dumping fumes into the engine, it's gonna think
that the you know, those fumes are going into the
intake and not being burned off and maybe sending a
false code to the catalytic converter. So I want the
EVAPP in map sensor codes taken care of first, because again,
(19:55):
I mean to replace a catalytic converter.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
On your vehicle.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
Can SOMETI use me? I'm sorry, can sometimes be up
to you know, if you buy a good when it
comes to catalyg converters. I do not ever recommend buy
an aftermarket I understand that nose.
Speaker 7 (20:11):
I wouldn't. I wouldn't. I'd stick with the dealer part.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Yeah, they're extremely expensive, you know, sometimes up to north
of two to three thousand dollars. Right, So let's not
worry about the CATALYG converter at this moment. I think
what we need to address is the EVAP code, and
we need to address the map sensor code.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
We need to start there from.
Speaker 7 (20:32):
Those things that I can fix myself, absolutely to do it.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
No, No, nope. So the map sensor is typically located
on top of the intake. Pretty cheap repair. You can
do it yourself.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
On the EVAP code if you could give me if
you want to call me back, maybe you know, you
can call me throughout the week at work, or you
can call me back next week. I need to know
exactly which code it is, whether it's a UH event
code or a purge code or you know what we're
what we've got going on with the Let me ask
you something real quick. When you pump gas into the vehicle,
(21:09):
does it ever hesitate to start after you've pumped gas
into the vehicle? No?
Speaker 7 (21:15):
Okay, all right, So now it starts right up.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
Okay.
Speaker 7 (21:19):
The only thing is I can't run regular in this
car because it just doesn't run right. I've had to
go up to mid grade for some reason, or it
doesn't run right.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
Okay, all right, so it's probably not about I mean,
it could it could, It couldn't.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
It could make sense.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
But let's again, the ev app is going to be
the cheapest. You can do it yourself. Uh, we need
to find out exactly which code it is, if it's
event valve or purge valve. That's where we need to
start first, because that's going to be the cheapest.
Speaker 7 (21:49):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (21:49):
And again next the map sensors, they're inexpensive. You can
do it yourself. It's typically located on the intake. I
want those two things fixed, the code's cleared, and then
we then if it comes back again after those two
things have been taken care of, then most likely Now
a lot of people go, well, Dane, what about the
sensors that you know? Basically, tell the oxygen you know,
(22:12):
tell the you know, tell the car that the catalyg
converter is not doing its job.
Speaker 1 (22:16):
We could we could do that, but I will be.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
Honest with you, nine percent of the time if I've
gett if if I'm getting a converter code, the converters bad.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
It's just not doing its job.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
Again, some people will sit there and go, hey, Dane,
you should probably replace the two sensors that are before
and after the converter.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
And there is a possibility.
Speaker 7 (22:38):
I don't know, I'm suspect on this car because I'm
the fourth owner. It was a Repo. I won't say
where I got it from. I got it from a
dealer cheat. But it does kind of burn oil. This
car does all go through like a court and a
half every thousand miles or something like that. Ya, bon's
(23:00):
a little bit oil. It's not bad enough that I
can smell it. So that's why I was wondering, should
I really replace the catalytic converter? Is it Dad? Or
am I just being a little bit paranoid?
Speaker 8 (23:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (23:10):
I mean again, when the vehicle, like most of these vehicles,
which I talk about on the show all the time,
when these vehicles are burning oil, yeah, that unused oil,
that oil that's going past the rings is going out
the tailpipe and can clog the converter. But I you know,
the you know with the two with the EVAP code
and the map sensor code. Those are the cheapest and
(23:32):
simplest things that we do. Right, You're you're gonna spend
probably a couple hundred bucks in parts.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
You can do it on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (23:38):
Let's do that. Let's eliminate that. And if it's still
code it then yeah, it probably is a converter. But
those two issues that you the other two issues that
you have can absolutely cause a false calailet converter code.
Speaker 7 (23:54):
Okay, all right, all right, I'll sounds like I'll start
with that and now I'll get ac Delco parts from all.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
The ac Delco please, yes, ac Delco. I've talked about
that all the time. I'm not paid by them. I
don't get you know, but these vehicles are very specific
on parts in the manufacturers and how they're made. And
you know, you go back to like you know, I
don't know a ninety five camera. Pretty much anything would work.
(24:21):
These vehicles are so precise and all the electronics and
everything that's in them. If you're gonna do it yourself,
and I've told you this a thousand times, if you're
doing the repairs yourself, I advocate, you know, I don't
have a problem with that at all. But you're already
saving your your yourself a tremendous amount of money by
(24:43):
doing it yourself.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
So buy a.
Speaker 2 (24:45):
OEM manufactured part. It is absolutely imperative that you do that,
because again you'll be racking your ring. You'll put this
part in after market one.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
Oh it's well, a new one's three hundred dollars buying.
Speaker 2 (24:58):
Get a cheap one on am on for twenty five
bucks and then guess what, Lo and behold, you have
the same problem. So you take it to mechanic, you
have to pay a diagnostic and they put their part
on it, and lo and behold, it was just because
you put a cheaper.
Speaker 1 (25:11):
Part on it. So you gotta be specific.
Speaker 2 (25:14):
You gotta make sure again if it's brakes or tires,
or wiper blades or alternators or starters. They're pretty standard, right,
But when you get into a map sensor, a mass
airflow sensor, or a throttle body or something, or a
fuel pump, you want to try to stick to original equipment.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
Okay, it's it's important, So.
Speaker 2 (25:32):

fifty five one hundred. Let's go back to the phones.
Just been patiently waiting, Hey, Jeff, Welcome to the car show.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
How can I help?
Speaker 9 (26:48):
Hey, nice talking to you.
Speaker 1 (26:49):
Absolutely, thanks for holding on.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
I know I sometimes I can get a little winded
and you know, but I appreciate you hold on.
Speaker 1 (26:57):
You.
Speaker 9 (26:57):
No, I'm glad he got wined because you were talking
about the the inexpensive parts, and that may be part
of my problem. I have a two thousand and two
GMC all wheel drive Safari.
Speaker 1 (27:09):
Okay, wow, you don't see many of those anymore.
Speaker 9 (27:13):
Oh no, no, no you don't. I've got three. It
belonged to Paramedic and I got it from them, and
so it's kind of like beefed up and got three
hundred and forty six thousand miles on it and it
just runs perfect. I mean, I love it. I won't
get rid of it.
Speaker 2 (27:32):
But when they built things, when they built things, the last.
Speaker 9 (27:37):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. It's got that you know, the four
point three vortex, in which I a pretty darn good
when I back up the tires, especially the passinger side
kick out real bad at the bottom, and I put
(27:58):
ball joints on tie rods. But like you were saying
to the previous caller, I got the you know, the move,
the move were ninety five the once I got I
think we're like twenty two, and I thought, is that
the problem or gonna be the control arm doing it?
Speaker 1 (28:21):
Hum?
Speaker 2 (28:22):
Well, so you said, okay, so when backing up, is
it the front or rear tires that are.
Speaker 7 (28:27):
Kicking out the front?
Speaker 1 (28:30):
Okay? And explain to me when you say kicking out.
Speaker 9 (28:36):
They push out at the bottom if you're looking right
at the front of the van, that the bottom of
the tires are kicked out away from the body.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
Okay. Huh.
Speaker 9 (28:52):
And it's drive me, yeah, drive me crazy because I
put you know, new bultots on it even though they
were jump and yet it still did it. And then
I started trying to do some research on it, and
they said, maybe it's the control arm bushy.
Speaker 8 (29:10):
Yes, it.
Speaker 9 (29:13):
Kicks out pretty far, really they they they kick out.
Speaker 1 (29:21):
Huh.
Speaker 9 (29:23):
Yeah, I can't. I can't. I can't figure it out.
But like you were saying, maybe you know, to the
be the the junk parts. And I had it aligned
and you know, it was like, you know, six months
later and it started doing it again.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
Interesting, all right, So I think on those safar as
it has upper and lower control arms.
Speaker 1 (29:47):
Is that correct?
Speaker 7 (29:50):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (29:51):
Okay?
Speaker 2 (29:53):
And the ball joints that you replaced was at the
upper ball joint or the lower.
Speaker 9 (29:58):
I actually get both of them, but at different times.
I didn't do it at the same the same time.
But you know, they were like twenty dollars and then
like the move, you know, they were you know, ninety three,
I believe, And I didn't know if that was like
(30:20):
maybe that was my problem now.
Speaker 2 (30:22):
I mean, if it's kicking out as bad as you
say it is, it's got to be it has to
be the control on bushings. So what I it has
to be the control on bushings allowing that thing to
shift like that.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
The ball joint wouldn't move that much. I mean they
can move, but not that much.
Speaker 9 (30:37):
If it's that noticeable, it's it's way, oh, it's way noticeable. Yeah. Yeah,
if I back up and yeah, if I back up
and like back into a spot or something, you'll you'll
see those tires. I mean they are definitely, especially a
passenger side, it's definitely.
Speaker 7 (30:58):
Yeah to be an or half Okay, it kicks out
that bad, but it's straight it's perfect.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
Okay, So probably probably the rear rear lower or rear
upper control arms are bad. So when when you basically
when you put that car in reverse, those those bushings
are you know, they're kicking out and that's what's making this.
Speaker 1 (31:21):
So I would I would buy upper and lower control.
Speaker 2 (31:26):
Arms with bushings and ball joints included, if you can
find them, if that's possible. I was typically if we're
if we're doing ball joints and the control arm is
available with those bushings, what I would recommend is, Yeah,
the bushings are probably shot on those control arms, and
that's what's putting those things in a bind because of
(31:47):
the way it's going backwards. So if you can find them,
buy control arms with ball joints already included upper and lower.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
And then.
Speaker 2 (31:59):
Yes, yes, but uh, you know I I talked about
this earlier in the show. The problem with it being
an O two Safari You're going to be limited to
your options, right, You're not gonna be able to call a
dealer and get them. They're gonna be obsolete. You can't
get them. My next step would be, you know, a
a secondary you know, after market option.
Speaker 1 (32:22):
So, uh, you did mention Moog they are.
Speaker 9 (32:27):
Is that good to you? Good?
Speaker 1 (32:30):
Yeah? You are going to be limited.
Speaker 2 (32:33):
I don't Moog is not always my first choice. But
it depends on the application, It depends on the car,
depends on the year, it depends on the options.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
I think your best option is Moog.
Speaker 2 (32:46):
Okay, if you can find there's another brand called Mevo
Tech m e v O Mevo Tech.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
I've had good luck with.
Speaker 2 (32:55):
Them, and yeah, Mevo m e v oh Mevo tech
t e c h Mevo Tech. Okay, I've had some
good I've had some good issues with them, or I've
had some good things with them and again. But I
(33:16):
will tell you too, is if you can find a
suspension control arm that does not have a grease fitting.
Now this is important. Try to find one that does
not have a grease fitting.
Speaker 1 (33:34):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (33:35):
So you know.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
Years ago, these vehicles, you know, were made with grease fittings,
and every time you'd come in, you know, you get
your oil change and you grease all the fittings. Right,
all of your manufacturers nowadays make control arms and ball joints.
Speaker 1 (33:50):
That don't have grease fittings.
Speaker 2 (33:52):
If you can find one without a grease fitting, do it,
because what happens.
Speaker 7 (34:01):
Is the ball joint.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
Okay, okay, you want to make sure the ball joint
does not have a grease fitting. If it's available, if
it has a grease fitting, that's the only way you
can buy it.
Speaker 1 (34:15):
That's fine.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
The problem is with the grease fittings is nobody greases them,
and you know, because it's it's it's kind of like
it's kind of like a vehicle with a carburetor. There's
not a lot of people that have a knowledge, that
have a ton of knowledge about grease fittings, and they
just most cars nowadays are not made with them. So
you've got and the ball joint fails and you know
(34:39):
two years because nobody greased it. So if you can
find one a control arm that has a ball joint
without a grease fitting, that would be my first choice.
If it does, you just got to make sure that
when you get it serviced that you go, hey, man,
can you make sure that you grease all my you know,
my fittings.
Speaker 9 (34:58):
But yeah, I mean I typically do all the stuff
for this. I mean, I mean, I completely baby this vehicle.
That's why there's three hundred and forty six thousand miles
on it. So so if I if I can't find
one that has a Greek that he just make sure
that obviously it's always threached.
Speaker 1 (35:22):
Yeah. Absolutely, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
If you can find a control arm with a ball
joint that does not have a grease fitting perfect, that's
what you want.
Speaker 1 (35:32):
But if that's the only option, then get one.
Speaker 2 (35:35):
And you just got to make sure that wherever you
take it, I mean, or you can even do it
at home. Just get a grease gun. It's not you
just snap a grease gun on pumped a couple of
things with grease. But the problem is nobody does it,
and then two years later the ball joints absolutely wasting
and going, oh man, this part. You know, this part's garbage, right,
(35:56):
you know, I can't believe it failed in two years.
Well because nobody greased it. Because it's designed to be
greased all the time, So try.
Speaker 9 (36:04):
To so when they're a greased I don't mean to
interrupt you, when when you grease some it's not supposed
to come bulging out of the rubber.
Speaker 7 (36:13):
No fee, no, no, okay, that's yeah exactly if it.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
If it happens, it's not the end of the world.
Speaker 2 (36:21):
But yeah, you don't want to pump that thing full
of grease where it's pumping out of the boot.
Speaker 1 (36:25):
I mean, that's not what you want, you just want to.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
You know, you'll see that, you'll see the boot, I
mean you'll start filling it up, and you'll see the
boot expand.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
Once you see it starting to expand a little bit,
you're good.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
But sometimes people will just keep pumping it until it
starts squirting out of the boot. And you don't want
that because it just makes a mess of everything. And
then you're compromising the boot. So you know, you know,
each ball joint one or two, you know, maybe three pumps,
depends on how dry it is. You know, two three pumps, boom,
you're done. Don't keep pumping it until it blows out
(36:56):
of the boot because you're compromising the boot.
Speaker 7 (36:59):
The kind of firm correct, you.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
Want it a little firm right, like a big old
you know something, just like I don't know how to
use an analogy, but you know, you just want to
kind of like cushy.
Speaker 9 (37:12):
Right, just it's all no, no, I know, I totally
understand because the one guy up there, I'm not saying
the company, he said, you gotta keep doing it until
it starts coming out of the boot. Well, that's like
a waste of grease and everything that can't.
Speaker 2 (37:29):
Be right, and that that grease goes everywhere. It makes
a mess of everything. The dirt sticks to it. No,
you don't want that, you want it to just you'll
see it if the if the boot is is low
on grease, you'll see it'll kind of puff up a
little bit and boom.
Speaker 1 (37:43):
You're good.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
Two or three squirts, you're done. You don't need to puff.
You know, you don't need to pump until it's blown
out of the boot. I know, absolutely not.
Speaker 9 (37:53):
Okay, awesome man, all right, Hey, thank you so much.
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (37:57):
Absolutely appreciate the phone call. So again, take your phone
calls and number call five one three seven fifty five hundred.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
Coming up. Tom, I really do appreciate you holding on.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
He's been holding for thirty minutes. Tom, I'm gonna get
to you next. You're listening to the Car Show on
fifty five KRC the talk station.
Speaker 1 (38:13):
This is fifty five KRC and iHeartRadio station.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
You're listening to the car show on fifty five KRC
the talk station. I am Dame Donovan from Donovan's Auto
entire Center. Here every Saturday from one to two to
answer your car questions.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
And again.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
I do this on my own time to just try
to take care of people's vehicles. Right, I'm not paid,
you know, I'm here to take care of you guys,
to make sure that you know I can get you
guys back out on the road and give you the
best advice that I can. Okay, And that's what's That's
(38:58):
I've said it multiple times. I enjoy what I do.
I love what I do. This is my passion as
early as I can remember. I'm third generation owner. My
grandfather started it, my father took it over, and it's
all I wanted to ever do. And I truly I
know there's a lot of people out there that sit
(39:20):
there and go they get up in.
Speaker 1 (39:21):
The morning and go, oh, I gotta go to work.
And I'm not one of those guys. I love what
I do.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
And there's never been a time where I was like
I drat to go into work.
Speaker 1 (39:33):
And I think, I.
Speaker 2 (39:36):
Really I'm blessed in that sense, because you know, there's
a lot of people that just go, oh, I just
don't want to go. I don't want to do it.
And it's just different. You know, when you're doing it
and you're helping people and you're you know, are there
some days where you know they're not great, They're not glorious. Sure,
I mean, you know, but I don't get up in
(39:58):
the morning and hate what I do. I love what
I do, and it's a very good it's a very
great passion of mine. And and what I want to
do is spend my Saturday afternoons with you guys, to
try to help you out and get you back out
on the road and give you the best advice that
I can, Right, is it always?
Speaker 1 (40:17):
Is it always perfect advice?
Speaker 7 (40:19):
No?
Speaker 2 (40:19):
But you know there's never there's never going to be
a doctor or millionaire.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
Or billionaire ever's going to have the greatest advice. Right,
But you.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
As a listener listening to me, and if I can
give you some a piece of advice to get you
back out in the room, get your car fixed, and
make your life easier, That's what I'm here for. And
again every Saturday from one to two and again the
number call five, one, three, seven fifty five. All right,
let's go back to the phones we have Tom. Hey, Tom,
(40:49):
thank you for patiently waiting. Really do appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (40:51):
How can I help my pleasure?
Speaker 8 (40:54):
And I wait longer to get more of your info.
Speaker 1 (40:58):
Absolutely, But so I'm here for.
Speaker 8 (41:02):
You for another hour. Actually, mine's a pretty simple kind
of question. You've seen these vehicles, the guys with jeeps
and trucks that go through all this mud, and I
mean it's inside and out. Well, I learned a truck
to a friend, I'll say that lightly and uh he
(41:25):
returned it looked like one of those. And I'm trying
to figure out how to get this thing completely clean again.
I know there are cleaners and stuff uh to to use,
but there are some that are better than others. To
what are your thoughts, I.
Speaker 2 (41:41):
Mean, how bad is it? How bad is the mud
caked on there? I mean, is it like caked on
the frame and and everything.
Speaker 8 (41:47):
Well, it's more it's more cosmetic, it's not. I guess
it's not quite as bad as I said. It's just
you know, the inside, you know, Uh, it's just there's stuff.
I mean, he has uh I think he went off
of candy bars and you know those are on the
uh on on a danceboard, and uh, you know, the
(42:11):
tires look like they've been uh you know, I don't,
I don't know. They're just so gunked up. And the
rims all of that stuff and in the windshields. I
can't even see how the damn windshields.
Speaker 2 (42:23):
Is it on the xterior on the on the windshield
is exterier or interior?
Speaker 7 (42:27):
Like?
Speaker 1 (42:27):
Was he like smoking it?
Speaker 2 (42:29):
Like sometimes if you have a lot of cigarette smoke,
you get that nicotine film on the inside.
Speaker 1 (42:33):
Or is it like just dirt on the outside.
Speaker 8 (42:36):
I think it's on the outside, but it's you know,
it's it's damn hard to get it off.
Speaker 1 (42:42):
Yeah, I think. Typically what I do on my truck is.
Speaker 2 (42:59):
I will do like I'll go through like a do
it yourself car wash where I'll foam it up. I
typically don't like what I don't like the brush. It's
supposed to be soft or whatnot. But there's other people
that are washing their cars. They've got rocks in the
brush and you can scratch it or whatnot. So typically
what I'll do is I'll go to the do it
(43:20):
yourself and I'll use the foam so foam it all up,
and then I'll do the hot high pressure soak and
try to rinse it all off. Okay, Now, as far
as like the underbody, and you're gonna have to go
(43:40):
to now you can get down on the ground. Nobody
wants to do that, but you can get down on
the ground and try to do the high pressure underbody.
Typically some of your local here in Cincinnati, some of
your local car washes will have an underbody spray, which
I will do. But then as far as like the interior,
I mean probably gonna need to take it to like
a detail shop where somebody can detail it internally.
Speaker 1 (44:05):
I don't with.
Speaker 2 (44:08):
My line of work and what I do and a
wife and three kids and sports all the time, I
don't have time to clean the interior in my car.
I can dust it and kind of somewhat clean it up.
I don't let my kids eat my vehicle, but I think,
oh yeah, my boys are just they're just slobs. But
I guess that's paid back from payback from when I
(44:29):
was a kid.
Speaker 1 (44:29):
But I mean, I do the do it yourself.
Speaker 2 (44:32):
You want to get the break dust and everything off
the wheels, because if you just run through a car wash,
it's not gonna do everything. Do the do it yourself,
run it through a local car wash that can do
the underbody, and then as far as the interior, maybe
a local detail shop.
Speaker 1 (44:51):
So all right, have a great weekend, So.
Speaker 2 (44:56):
All right, everybody, I'll be back next weekend to answer
all your car questions. We have sick Steak at seventy
degree weather coming up this week. I'll be back next
Saturday to answer all of your car questions. I do
appreciate everybody calling, and I'll be back again next week
to answer all your car questions. I'm danam And from
donovan'zatto on Tire Center. You're listening to the Car Show
on fifty five KRC, the talk station
