Speaker 1 (00:00):
Those are windshield first stepping out of temple keeping rid
them of the song.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
I'm already I gotta keep a.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
Baby, a song you made me want to roll my
windows down in close.

Speaker 4 (00:25):
Good afternoon, and welcome to the car show on fifty
five KRC. I'm Dane Donovan from Donovan's Auto entire Center
taking your car questions. The number to call five one
three seven four nine fifty five hundred. That number again,
five one three seven fifty five hundred. It is a
gorgeous Saturday afternoon.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
And I barely made it.

Speaker 4 (00:48):
As usual, I lived my life one one minute at
a time. I am here and uh uh my son
had a football game, so they're in the play.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
And uh so it was. It was fun.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
I unfortunately got roped into being on the chain gang,
so I had to run the chains, and towards the end,
I'm like, hey, I gotta go. Somebody's gonna have to
take over. I'm like, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna
make it on time, and then Tony Benner's gonna be
mad at me, and nobody wants that. So, uh but
my wife just updated me they won their game fourteen

(01:23):
to nothing. So and my middle it's my middle son, Nolan.
So he had a great sack, great tack, tackle, did.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
A great job.

Speaker 4 (01:32):
The whole team did a phenomenal job. So good job
to uh the All Saints football team. They move on
in the playoffs, so also our Bengals. I I didn't
see that coming. I'll be honest with you.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
I have not lost faith.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
But on a Thursday night, you know, I I turned
into a pumpkin after nine o'clock, so I wasn't gonna
subject myself to watching it.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
In hopes that they do win.

Speaker 4 (02:00):
And they pulled it off to a phenomenal job, so
kudos to them as well.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
So and then after this, I am heading to a
car show.

Speaker 4 (02:10):
It is unfortunately it's it's invitation only, but it's it's
for a great cause for Him County Police Association.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
So I'm gonna head there.

Speaker 4 (02:21):
So I'm gonna bolt out of here as soon as
I can, head home, change and head down and there.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
So so gorgeous day.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
And again in studio, taking your phone calls again the
number to call five one, three fifty five hundred and
number one more time, five one three seven fifty five hundred.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
Let's go to the phones. We have Jimmy, Hey, Jimmy,
Welcome to the car show.

Speaker 5 (02:42):
How can I help?

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Good afternoon, Good afternoon.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
How are you?

Speaker 3 (02:49):
I have a solution for you? Always talk about oil consumption.
My wife is I bought her a twenty eleven toyot
a round four wonderful vehicle. It has one hundred and
almost one hundred and ninety thousand miles on it. So
the oild rings draw out originally associate five W twenty oil,

(03:09):
and it kept using oil. So I I drained it
out and changed the filter and I put ten W
forty mob one synthetic oil and one can of STP
and it don't use a drop of oil.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Now that works, okay? So can you do you have
your radio on?

Speaker 5 (03:30):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (03:30):
Me?

Speaker 2 (03:30):
K yes, please? Yeah, sorry, I'm getting.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
Yeah, you got everybody yet?

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Yeah? Yeah, there's a lot of feedback. Son, all right,
So you.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
You changed the oil just to STP? I mean stay
still the same? Is it still five W twenty?

Speaker 6 (03:54):
No?

Speaker 3 (03:54):
I put ten W forty.

Speaker 5 (03:59):
And can of STP.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
It doesn't use one drop of oil means oil rings
I get pulled out from ring it. But I feel
that something else wrong?

Speaker 6 (04:10):
What it is?

Speaker 2 (04:12):
So mobile?

Speaker 6 (04:14):
One?

Speaker 3 (04:15):
Yeah and one can of STP.

Speaker 7 (04:18):
You know what that is?

Speaker 4 (04:19):
Is it?

Speaker 2 (04:19):
It's is it some type of oil out of it?

Speaker 4 (04:21):
Is?

Speaker 3 (04:22):
It's a thickened petroleum. I drag raced all my life.
You get seven five or six hundred thousand miles out
of an engine? Every time I change you all, I
put two cans STP in it the way it's whe
You don't remember that. You don't remember the commercials they

(04:43):
used to have.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Oh no, no, no, I know. I'm sorry, Yes I do.
I'm sorry.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
It's just I'm getting so much feedback. It's just hard
to hear you. I apologize. So I was just getting
so much feedback. I don't know if it was his
phone or as radio. So I do apologize. But yes,
I am familiar with the STP uh, And yes, oil
consumption is a.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Something that we deal with on a daily basis. Now
again again we've talked about this.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
It is a wildly, wildly not talked about issue, which
I always talk about it on the show because we
need to talk about it.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Everybody needs to be aware of it.

Speaker 4 (05:24):
Is that these newer cars, and I don't care if
it's you know, I've seen cars with forty thousand miles
that start using oil. It happens to most of these cars,
and it's the way that it's the way that they're designed,
and we all need to be aware of it, because again,
back in two thousand and eight, it was you know,

(05:46):
we all talked about changing oil every three thousand on
conventional oil, every five thousand on synthetic, and then all
of a sudden, at the drop of a hat overnight,
when we were in that financial crisis and the automakers
were needing to sell cars and doing anything they could,

(06:08):
a lot of them were giving away free lifetime oil
changes or you know, free five or six or ten
oil changes.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
And I mean my father in law.

Speaker 4 (06:19):
Included, you know, when he bought his new vehicle, they
they gave him several oil changes, and when he took
it in at five thousand miles, like, oh, you're not due,
We're not going to change it. And these cars burn oil,
and you should continue to stay on the path of
changing that oil every five thousand miles. These cars are

(06:40):
burning oil. I just had a Honday and I talked
about this. I just had an Ahunday in two weeks ago.
Gentlemen came in check engine light was on the vehicle,
was running rough. He just had the engine replaced from Hundai.
I'm talking brand new, not used, that remnufactured, brand new
engine from This was the car's first oil change. And

(07:03):
he brings it to me because the car is running rough,
check engine lights on. It brings it to me there's
no oil in it. None, that Hyundai just replaced the engine.
And you know, we're told and taught that, hey, look,
focus on the light, focus on when the car tells
you need oil. And so so many people come to

(07:25):
me and I say, hey, you know you need an
oil change, and they're like, oh no, no, my car says,
I still have thirty percent life left.

Speaker 2 (07:31):
I'm not going to change it right now.

Speaker 4 (07:32):
Well again, let me reiterate that that is not the
level of the oil. That is the life of the oil.
Your car literally can come to me with a quarter
oil in it, and everybody assumes, and rightfully so, you
assume that that oil light's gonna come on, and I'm
here to tell you that they don't. I cannot tell

(07:53):
you in the past ten years the last time I
saw a car come into my shop or any of
my shops with a low oil on. They don't come
on they're there, but I literally have cars come in
with I'll pull a half a quart of oil out
of them. They hold four or five courts, no oil light,
cars running rough because there's no oil in it. And

(08:16):
you know, I'm not a conspiracy theorist and thinking that
the you know, it's it's designed that way. But we
need to talk about it. It's something that we need
to discuss because it's something that is here. I don't
think it's going away anytime soon. And I understand that
oil is an oil change today. I mean years ago,
it used to be. You know, I remember when I

(08:37):
got into the business, it was, you know, twenty thirty
bucks for an oil change.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Well, some of these cars are one hundred, one hundred
and fifty dollars. I get it.

Speaker 4 (08:43):
It's expensive. The oils are, you know, more sophisticated, they're
they're better. Do I think that they're good enough that
you can go ten fifteen thousand miles change them once
a year? No, because the vehicles are consuming it, okay,
And a lot of people assume that, oh, well, I'm
not seeing any white smoke out of the tailpipe or
I'm not seeing anything. It happens, you don't see it

(09:07):
if you ever pay attention to get on the high
When you're getting on the highway, look at the car
in front of you. Now, obviously, stay safe, focus on
the road, but at the same time, look at the tailpipe.
If you see a big old puff of black smoke
coming out of that tailpipe, that is oil, that is
soot that is burning through. And again you'll see it.
I promise you you'll see it if you just focus

(09:29):
on it. And the problem is is we focus on
the oh, I've got thirty percent life. Well, yeah, you've
got thirty percent life, but you only have a quarter
of oil in your car, and it does substantial damage
to your vehicle. And I understand that we don't want
to be at a repair shops. It's like going to
the doctor or the dentist, right, you don't want to

(09:50):
be there. But we need our cars to get our
kids to school. In my case, you know football, this morning, work,
and you know they're expensive. I get it, but you
want to make sure that you keep up on it.
And I harp on this all the time. And a
gentleman just talked about it opening up the show with Hey,
I've got an oil consumption issue, and there's a lot

(10:12):
of things out there.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
That will tell you try this, try that, and you
can try them.

Speaker 4 (10:20):
I have not, in my opinion, found a product that
I have can wholeheartedly back and promise you that it's
going to take care of your problem. But what I
can do with this platform is tell you you need
to be aware of maybe making sure that you check
your oil regularly and making sure you're changing it regularly. Now,
that's not focusing on you want to focus on that

(10:41):
little sticker up in your window.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
That's it. Don't focus on what.

Speaker 4 (10:45):
The car salesman told you to do, not your neighbor
down the street, Bob who's been a mechanic for thirty years,
and what he says. You want to focus on what
that little sticker says. And again, we all have to
most of us all have to stop at the gas
station and get gas in our car. So take that
time instead of getting on your excuse me, getting on

(11:06):
your phone and checking social media, or get out of
your car, pop your hood and check your oil level.
It's important, you know. And you can come by any Donovans.
You can come by any of our locations. You can
go to donovantire dot com find your nearest location. We'll
check it for you for free. We'll just swing on
by and just say, hey, Dan can check my oil.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
We'll do it for free. Not a problem. I'd rather
do that and you get the longevity out of your vehicle.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
Then you blow it up right because there's no oil
in it, or you're causing all kinds of other issues, right,
So it's important, it's imperative. We talk about it, and
I can't harp about it enough. So it's it's it's important.
So all right again, taking your phone calls number call
five one three seven four nine fifty five hundred. That
number gain five one three seven four nine fifty five hundred.

(11:50):
Phone lines are wide open. Coming up, we have Paul.

two nine ninety thirty.

Speaker 6 (12:29):
It's the Glenn Beck weekday mornings at nine oh six
on fifty five KRC, the talk station.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
Taking your car questions.

Speaker 4 (12:39):
The number to call five one, three seven nine fifty
five one hundred. I'm Dane Donovan from Donovan's Auto entire
Center and for those of you out there and join
the wonderful weather we're having.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
It's it's great and.

Speaker 4 (12:54):
But everybody still has car problems and uh, in fact,
I even had one myself this week. So I have
I have some older vehicles and I get picked on
all the time by my cousin. I don't like to
let things go. In fact, my wife even makes fun
of me as well because I have a car that
I bought when I was eighteen, and she's like, can
you just sell that car?

Speaker 2 (13:16):
And I have a hard time parting with my stuff now.
I by no means am I hoarder. Maybe a car hoarder,
but not like a hoarder.

Speaker 4 (13:26):
Hoarder, right, so I'm not like keeping old clippings and
newspapers and trash or whatnot. But I do like the
cars that I've purchased. I like to keep because I
don't owe anything on them. And you know, so again,
I'm forty one years old by the car that I
have as a civic, had it since I was eighteen,
bought it when I was a senior in high school,
still running great, runs like a top.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Now, the battery might be currently dead at the moment,
but but I had.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
After that, I could no longer get my wife and
three children in a Tudor Honda City coop, so I
bought my father's old F one fifty.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
It's an O seven. It's impeccable shape to an extent.

Speaker 4 (14:08):
Now, and this goes to and we talk about this
all the time when you're buying a used vehicle.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
Okay, I'm gonna use this as an example.

Speaker 4 (14:17):
You might look at the outside of it and go,
oh man, this thing's impeccable shape.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
Looks great.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
I mean, if you look at my truck, it my
dad's old truck, it looks impeccable.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
It's great.

Speaker 4 (14:27):
Yes, there is some rust on it. It's not perfect.
Inside is perfect. But my parts guy, my driver was
driving it earlier this week and he says, hey, Dane,
some of your backglass is rattling, and so that's weird
because it shouldn't be.

Speaker 2 (14:46):
So I lo and behold.

Speaker 4 (14:47):
I go back and sure enough, the frame right there
where the bed and the cab meat has completely rusted through.
I mean it's hanging by a thread. So the bed
was beating up against the cab. So took the be
off of it, and lo and behold it is. Unfortunately,
it's shot. I mean, there's I don't think that there's
much that I can do. Can't get a frame for it,

(15:09):
it's obsolete. Can't buy a used one. It's just way
too much work.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
So you look at my truck.

Speaker 4 (15:15):
It looks in great it's looks like it's in great condition,
but the rear end of it's about ready to fall out.
So if you're buying a used vehicle, it's important and
impeccable it's it's important now. Even if it's impeccable shape,
it's important that you get it inspected. Now, whether you're
in the Tri State area or you're buying out of town,

(15:37):
buying a reputable shop and do what's what we what
we call a used vehicle inspection. Get it inspected by
somebody who's reputable and can have it inspected. Make sure
you check the carfax report. And you again, I don't
even if the carfax report. I see that so often
that people go, oh, well, I checked the Carfax report.

Speaker 2 (15:57):
It's good. Well, that's not necessarily the case, because guess what.

Speaker 4 (16:00):
If I wreck my vehicle and I totaled the whole
front of adelf which did happen last year.

Speaker 2 (16:07):
I had a buddy of mine that has a body shop.

Speaker 4 (16:09):
I had him fix it, and guess what doesn't show
up on the carfax report because I had my buddy
do it and I paid him to do it, and
it's not on a carfax report. So that doesn't If
it's not on the carfax report, it doesn't always necessarily.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
Mean it hasn't been wrecked.

Speaker 4 (16:23):
Years ago, I had a Lexus that was a pre owned,
certified one hundred thousand mile and customers still brought it
to me and lo and behold, I found that at
the dealership it was completely totaled on the front end.
That did like I think they did like thirty thousand
dollars damage to the front end of this vehicle, and
I found it, and unfortunate the lady took it back

(16:43):
and they're like, oh, well, we weren't aware of it,
and we're not going to make it certified anymore. So
it's important that you do that and get it them
inspected because if I sell it, If anybody wants to
buy lightly used def F one fifty, let me know,
but please get them inspected.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
If you're buying a used vehicle. Always it's important. And
like I said, we all have car problems. I had
one this.

Speaker 4 (17:06):
Week and unfortunately, I think my truck's going to probably
end up in maybe a heap of metal. So all right,
again the number to call five one, three, seven, nine
fifty five hundred. Let's go to the phones.

Speaker 7 (17:17):
We have Paul.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
Hey, Paul, welcome to the car show.

Speaker 5 (17:20):
How can I help Salvacivic.

Speaker 10 (17:23):
I still miss my ninety A Cord that I sold
at three hundred and ninety four thousand miles.

Speaker 4 (17:28):
Wow. Anyway, yeah, yeah, mine's a two minds are two thousand,
and she only has like one hundred and forty three thousand.
She's still she's but it's just it's just so difficult
with haul and three boys back and forth to sports
and schools and everything like that.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
So now I'm going to keep it.

Speaker 10 (17:45):
Anyway, we talked a few weeks ago about my two
thousand and eight element. The engines started making a racket.

Speaker 2 (17:52):
And you had a low oil pressure issue.

Speaker 10 (17:55):
Yeah, oil pressure. I wound up. I pulled the pulled
the chain cover and the out cover and didn't see
any issues. And to get the pan off to check it,
you got to almost take the engine out. So I
wound up pulling the engine and putting in one I
had rebuilt, and I had had some missfire problems with it,

(18:21):
and tried to call the last couple of weeks. I
think he took those off.

Speaker 2 (18:26):
Yeah, yeah, I apologize. Yeah, a little bit of football
going on.

Speaker 10 (18:31):
So yeah, So I wound up pulling the injectors from
the engine. I pulled out and put those in the
engine I installed instead of the ones that had been
sitting around for a while.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
And that that's cured my Your missfire.

Speaker 10 (18:50):
Cured my missfire. So I'm I'm bagging business with us oil.
I still haven't pulled the still haven't pulled the pan off.
The old engine to diagnose it.

Speaker 2 (18:59):
Yeah, but your oil pressure is back up and.

Speaker 10 (19:02):
And everything aroundale pressure's oil pressure is like twenty five
at idol and it's like seventy or eighty by the
time you get to two thousand rpm.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
And how many miles we're on that engine that you pulled?

Speaker 10 (19:17):
Oh, two hundred and sixty son?

Speaker 5 (19:20):
Maybe wow?

Speaker 2 (19:22):
Okay, and you rebuilt this engine that you just put in. Yeah,
like new sleeves, new new.

Speaker 10 (19:29):
Uh well not new sleeves. I just wound up board
over twenty twenty thouls. So I put new pistons and
rings and rod berrings and crank berries and wow, you know,
seals and all that good stuff.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
So do you is there somebody that you take to
have that machine? Or do you machine it yourself?

Speaker 4 (19:51):
No?

Speaker 10 (19:51):
I don't machine it myself. I had Smice Automotive is
done on a lot of machine work for me.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
Okay.

Speaker 10 (20:00):
I've had good success with it.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
So well, good for you.

Speaker 4 (20:03):
Well I appreciate the follow up. Uh and yes I was,
I was gone. I apologize, but I'll be here for
a while now. So all right, all right, Paul, Well,
thank you very much. Every great weekend.

Speaker 10 (20:16):
I'll still tell you back when I diagnose the old engine,
just for fun.

Speaker 2 (20:20):
All right, I want to know, Thank you sir. So
that's the thing.

Speaker 4 (20:25):
If you want to invest the get on again. I
if you want to invest your time and your money. Now,
you know, we all get to that point where we
decide whether or not it's worth it, right And you
know again, the guys at work were like, I just
junk it, just junk it.

Speaker 5 (20:42):
I get it.

Speaker 4 (20:43):
Most people would, uh. But I don't own anything on it.
It doesn't have any sentimental value.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
But hey, you know it's a good truck. I know
what I have in it. It's you know again, it
was my dad's.

Speaker 4 (20:56):
He bought it brand new, and I know what I
have in it. Put a tremendous amount of work into it.

Speaker 5 (21:03):
Now.

Speaker 4 (21:04):
Unfortunately, the frame is something that can be fixed. Now
it's whether or not I want to put the time
and money into it.

Speaker 6 (21:11):
Now.

Speaker 4 (21:12):
You might sit there and go, well, Dane, if you
you know, have the frame fix or whatnot, it's going
to exceed the value of the car.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
It might. And most people nine out of ten times
people sit there and go, it's not worth it. I
get it.

Speaker 4 (21:27):
But for me, I think it's worth I think it's
worth it because I know what I have now. If
I turn around and go buy a ten thousand dollars
truck tomorrow, I don't know what I have. I don't
know who had it, I don't know if anybody changed
the oil in it regularly.

Speaker 2 (21:42):
I don't know what.

Speaker 4 (21:42):
I don't know what I'm getting into. So in my opinion,
it's worth investing a little bit more money and knowing
what I have, opposed to going out and buying something
that I don't know what I've got, right, So you know,
and that's something that even and I'm here to tell
you too, even if you have a car that you
bought brand new, you've had its whole life, and you're

(22:04):
in the predicament that I'm in.

Speaker 2 (22:06):
You have to tell yourself.

Speaker 4 (22:07):
I don't care what Joe Shmoe says down the street,
I don't care what your neighbor says or anybody else.
You have to just confide in yourself and decide whether
or not it's worth it to you. And in my opinion,
it's worth it to me. Whether it exceeds a value
of the car or not, it's worth it to me. Okay, Now, yeah,
granted I have the ability to have it fixed, and

(22:31):
that does save some time and money. But I've had
customers that have spent I mean, I had a gentleman,
one of a great customer of mine.

Speaker 2 (22:41):
He had a Buick Riviera and I'm telling you what
it was like. It was a ninety three Buick Riviera.

Speaker 4 (22:47):
And I want to say, in our old system we
kept track, but I want to say he total what
he spent with me was like thirty thousand dollars over
the course of this vehicle fixing it now again it
was a nine. Now this he made this thing all
the way up till I want to say, like twenty twenty.
So I mean he got a tremendous amount of life

(23:08):
out of it, and it was still an impeccable shape,
but it.

Speaker 2 (23:10):
Just got harder and harder to find parts for it,
you know.

Speaker 4 (23:14):
So it's one of those things where you just have
to not take anybody else's opinion and focus on whether
or not it's worth it to you and if you
want to invest the time and money period. So for me,
I think it's worth it. Somebody else it might be not.
So alread again taking your phone calls and nember to
call five one three seven four nine, fifty five hundred.

(23:35):
Coming up, we have While we've got the phone on,
we have Warren, Mike, Terry and Paul.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
You're listening to the car show on fifty five krs.
The talk station.

Speaker 4 (23:46):

nineteen fifty eight book Your appointment at donovantire dot com.

Speaker 8 (24:17):
Don't miss Clay and Buck.

Speaker 11 (24:19):
Monday at twelve oh six on fifty five KRZ, the
talk station.

Speaker 4 (24:25):
Taking your car questions. The number to call five one
three seven fifty five one hundred.

Speaker 2 (24:32):
Let's go back to the phones. We have Warren, Hey, Warren,
welcome to the car show. How can I help?

Speaker 5 (24:38):
I got a twenty ten bmw X three it's got
one of those three leaders sexes in it. Great car.
Got a valve cover apparently that's sleeking, and got a
phenomenal number just to replace the valve cover, like fourteen
hundred bucks. That sounds a little weird to me. They say,

(25:01):
it's a plastic valve cover that's on top of the
BMW and it cracked, and it's got to be a
way to fix that thing cheaper. Also, it does not
have a dipstick. You press this button on the dash
and it tells you where the oil level is at.
Just wonder if you've had any experience with those.

Speaker 4 (25:23):
Yes, there, I have quite a bit of experience with them,
and so on the BMW's Yes, so I'm not familiar
with them cracking.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
I don't know that I've ever seen one crack.

Speaker 4 (25:34):
But the plastic valve cover on ten thousand miles, Yeah,
the plastic valve cover. What happens to them is they warp.
So what we've done in the past, okay, what you
can do as an alternative, but just be aware of it.

Speaker 2 (25:51):
We have in the past.

Speaker 4 (25:53):
The gaskets fail, okay, on the valve cover gasket or
on the valve cover. However, the valve cover is plastic,
they warp from heat. They don't they don't always sealed properly.
So in the past there have been times what we've
done is we've replaced just the gasket, and you know,
it's it's a fifty to fifty shot.

Speaker 2 (26:13):
So sometimes that takes care of it. Sometimes it does not.

Speaker 4 (26:18):
It continues to leak, and you have to replace the
valve cover because it still continues to leak because it's warped.

Speaker 2 (26:25):
My suggestion is, I'm sorry, does that save money?

Speaker 5 (26:31):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (26:31):
Absolutely absolutely, it would probably save you about it probably
save you about four or five hundred dollars by just
putting a gasket on it. Again, I have not seen
one crack. Now, just because I haven't seen it doesn't
mean it can't happen. But what I would tell your
mechanic is say, hey, listen, understand. Tell him, I understand

(26:52):
that this valve cover that's plastic could be warped, but
can we just try to put a gasket on it first.
I understand that it may not repair it, it may
not fix it, but let's try that first. Now again,
if it doesn't fix it, you're back in the same boat.
And then they're taking a back apart and you're doing
the whole job.

Speaker 2 (27:12):
And at my all of my.

Speaker 4 (27:14):
Shops, if we have a BMW with a valve cover
gasket leaking, we do recommend replacing the gasket and the
valve cover, and it is about fourteen hundred dollars. But again,
as an alternative, you can have them just replace the gasket.
It's a fifty to fifty shot. Sometimes we're successful with it,
sometimes we are not. But if I think, if you know,

(27:34):
going into it, I mean, it's not gonna leak immediately,
So they're gonna put a gasket on it and it
might be a year or two before it starts leaking again.

Speaker 5 (27:43):
And then I score it for a while.

Speaker 4 (27:46):
Yeah, so just tell them, hey, listen, I'd like to
just replace. Let's try the gasket. I understand that it
might not one hundred percent fix the vehicle, but I'm
willing to take that sacrifice and that chance of just
replacing in the gasket and see where we're at and
go from there. So it is labor intensive, but again
it probably would save you about four or five hundred

(28:07):
dollars if you just did the gasket.

Speaker 5 (28:11):
Okay, second question, is there any way to put a
put a g not instead of a gauge showing whether
it's off a gallon of oil or gallon a cord
of oil. Is there any way of putting the dipstick
in it? No, sir, okay. Second related point, got an

(28:32):
eighty eight corvette runs terrific and still goes like that
like it originally did a good bit simpler and less
expensive to work on than the BMW. Yeah, eighty eight
and we'll still spend the tires rolling a twenty mile
an hour. It goes like crazy. Yeah, well, thank you, well,

(28:56):
thank you so much for that.

Speaker 2 (28:57):
Yeah, try try, just try the gasket.

Speaker 4 (28:59):
Just ask him just when you go into the court,
when you go in there, just say, hey, listen, I
understand the implications that this might not one hundred percent
fix it, but I'm willing to take the chance of
just replacing the gasket for now and go from there.
And again, you're gonna have success. You're gonna have success
to a point. It will stop that oil from leaking.

(29:21):
It's just a matter of how long do you prolong it.
And again it could be could be six months, it
could be two years. But if you're like, hey, Dane,
it's worth me saving four or five hundred dollars and
just trying to put a gasket on it and knowing
that you might it might not work, and telling your
mechanic that too. Say listen, I understand that this isn't
the the you know, the the one hundred percent fix,

(29:43):
but I'm willing to take the opportunity to just fix
the gas.

Speaker 2 (29:47):
Just replace the gasket. Let's start there.

Speaker 4 (29:50):
And I understand that if it doesn't fix it, you know,
that's that's on you, right, you should just say, hey,
put it on me. But I want to try this first.
Let's let's try to treat it with a little bit
of medicine before we do surgery.

Speaker 5 (30:03):
Right, what sounds good? Good advice?

Speaker 4 (30:06):
All right, Well, thank you very much. You take care,
bye bye. So that's the thing, and I've talked about
this all the time. I want to get to all
these callers. But you know, when it comes to cars,
and I always kind of relate to the human body
because we most of us can relate.

Speaker 2 (30:23):
Right. If you wake up.

Speaker 4 (30:25):
One morning, you know, and I'm forty one years old,
I'm not old, per se, I feel like I am,
but you know, you get up and you're like, ooh,
that that ankle hurts or ooh, that knee hurts. Right,
you don't just ultimately call your doctor and go, hey,
you know, we're going to do surgery, right, you might
need to walk it off, or maybe you need some advil,
or maybe there's another underlying issue. But your doctors, you're

(30:47):
not going to go to your primary doctor and he's
just going to say up, yep, go ahead and replace it.

Speaker 2 (30:52):
No, let's treat it with some medicine first.

Speaker 4 (30:54):
Let's see if there's something that we can do on
our end to treat it with some medicine before we
do any type of surch right, and in his case, again,
we do at all of our Donovan entire locations do
recommend replacing the gasket and the valve cover.

Speaker 2 (31:12):
And again it's because the valve covers are plastic. They warp.

Speaker 4 (31:15):
BMW's are notorious for that. Now, again, have we had
success by just replacing the gasket. Absolutely, And if you
know that going into the matter that you're like, hey, listen,
I'm taking a gamble here, I'm taking a chance. Now
it will seal his his his oil leak up. How
long is where we're at right again, it could be

(31:39):
six months could be two years, but if and again
at Donovan's we always try to reiterate that, hey, listen,
we can we can do this, or we can do this.
You know it's it's again. I'm gonna go back to it.
If you had to have open heart surgery and you're like, hey, doc,
why you're in. If you see anything else, let's go
ahead and knock it out, let's get it done, because

(32:00):
you don't want to go through that again.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
Most people will look at it that way.

Speaker 4 (32:03):
Other people go, you know what, let's just fix what's
wrong with my heart and then if there's something else
that pops up down the road, I'll worry about it later.

Speaker 2 (32:11):
I mean that is a scenario that most people can understand.

Speaker 4 (32:15):
Everybody has a different thought processes how they want to
approach it and what the cost involved is.

Speaker 2 (32:21):
And what the risk is.

Speaker 4 (32:23):
So it's just something that when you take your car
to mechanic. I had a young lady, a customer of
mine that we did some work on her car, and
then later on down the road it developed a coolant leak.
And again she was very polite and respectful, but she

(32:43):
goes thing, I don't know cars. I didn't have this
problem before, and can you help me and can you
walk me through why I'm having this issue now after
you've done what you've done, and I explained it all,
and I'm like, hey, look, it's a separate problem. It's
a separate issue, and I do believe that it's imperative.

(33:03):
It's so important that you explain that to your customer.
And if you and if you are accustomer in your car,
is at the mechanic, ask those questions, and you know,
if they're a good mechanic and they can walk you
through the process, it'll help you understand what's going on
with the vehicle. And I did that with her, and
she understood and and I and she was very again,

(33:27):
very respectful in plight, but she was a bit frustrated
because she says, I didn't have this problem before, but
now I have it after I've I've done some other
work to my car.

Speaker 2 (33:36):
And she goes, I'm just, you.

Speaker 4 (33:38):
Know, I'm confused as because I don't know anything about cars,
and a good mechanic and a good automotive repair shop
should and should be able to explain all of that
to you, lay it all out and help you and
guide you through that process. I don't know anything about
you know, if my knee hurts her, you know, I've

(33:59):
got a pain in my chest, or my head hurts
or whatnot.

Speaker 2 (34:03):
I go to my doctor and he tells me what's
wrong with me, right, and I, you know, I don't
know anything about the human body.

Speaker 5 (34:12):
He does.

Speaker 2 (34:13):
I take his opinion and I roll with it.

Speaker 4 (34:15):
So, uh, you know, and again I understand that there's
a million other repair shops out there, and some people
are some repair shops are not reputable. We are been
in business for sixty eight years. Take pride in what
we do. I love what I do, and in fact
so much that I'm here every Saturday to answer car questions, so,

Daniel I pointed out that I was not here a
couple of weeks, and you know, I'm just just busy schedule.
So for those of you real quickly, I'm going to
get back to the phones. For those of you who
are out there, my wife reminded me today which I forgot,

(37:59):
but today isweetest day. So if you have a sweetheart,
make sure that you go out get her some candy
or a card.

Speaker 2 (38:06):
However I did not. I did, though, get up early.

Speaker 4 (38:10):
I went out, got her her coffee that she wanted
and her coffee cake, and she goes, what's the occasion,
And I said, well, just you know, just trying to
take care of my wife. And she's like, oh, I
thought it was for Sweetest Day. I'm like, yep, that's
what it was for, absolutely, so, so don't forget. So
I was like, well, you know, I was honest with her.
I was like, no, I did not know that. It's

(38:32):
just something that we just you know, I don't forget
Valentine's Day, but sweetest Day.

Speaker 2 (38:36):
Eh.

Speaker 4 (38:37):
But I said, hey, how about later this afternoon we
go to dinner. So don't forget that this afternoon sweetest Day.
If you haven't, If you're listening and you forgot, go
out there and get some flowers and cars or candy,
whatever your wife prefers or your significant other, make sure
you get them taken care of them.

Speaker 2 (38:54):
All right, let's go to the phones. We have Mike. Hey, Mike,
welcome to the car show. How can I help.

Speaker 5 (39:00):
Dane.

Speaker 6 (39:01):
I have two thy eighteen f one point fifty it's
three two coyote motor. I have the simplest repair that
I cannot do. I've had this truck to two different
mechanics and the dealer, and no one can find my

(39:25):
ambient air sensor. So I did some digging myself, and
there was I guess, if this truck was built before
March of two thy eighteen, they put it in the
passenger mirror, not in the passenger mirror. The wires are there,

(39:51):
but it's not there. And then if it was built
after March of two thousand and eighteen or whatever, it
is in the center real support of the radiator. The
whole is there, but the ambient air sensor is not.

(40:13):
My check engine light is on and the code that
it throws is the ambient air sensor. And no one
can find it on this truck, not even the dealer.
Not even the dealer. They actually even sent me the

(40:34):
the printout of the location and their location. I gave
him the ven number and their location showed the center
stud of the radiator and.

Speaker 10 (40:49):
It is not there.

Speaker 5 (40:50):
Man.

Speaker 6 (40:50):
I one day I drove past a off road place
and I kind of know this guy somewhat, and he's
a Ford guy through and through and for free. He
came out and searched for about forty minutes and he goes, Mike,
I ran the code. It's coming up, ambient air sensor

(41:13):
and I cannot find it. He said, I don't know
what to tell you, and The only reason is with
the hot weather and stuff, it's affecting my air conditioning
and I'm at a loss. They even showed me the book.

(41:33):
It's like only one hundred and twenty three dollars repair
at the dealer to do this, and no one can
find it.

Speaker 2 (41:43):
We would you let me look for free? I sure
would I do.

Speaker 6 (41:49):
Where are you located?

Speaker 4 (41:51):
So I am, I'm just from I just looked up
Melbourne beause I wanted to see how far you were.

Speaker 2 (41:59):
So I'm fifteen.

Speaker 4 (42:02):
I am twelve to fifteen minutes from downtown Cincinnati. So
it looks like maybe where you're at you're about fifteen
minutes from downtown Cincinnati, right, So I'm about thirty minutes
from you. Like I said, if you just go up
more seventy one, you get off with the Ridge Road exit.

Speaker 7 (42:21):
Got it?

Speaker 4 (42:22):
Just again, it's my Ridge Row location. I've been there lately.
I have a multiple I have other locations, but the
Ridge Road location. I'm fifteen minutes from downtown, so I'm
again thirty minutes from you.

Speaker 2 (42:33):
I'll look at let me look at it.

Speaker 4 (42:35):
I always love a good you know, this is where
I I'll put four or five guys on it. I
want to try to find it. Like I said, I
won't charge you, well, let's let's try it.

Speaker 2 (42:50):
I want to be that guy that finds it.

Speaker 6 (42:53):
Man, I want you to be that guy. I am
at a loss because I'm pretty good. I love this truck.
It just I got a camper I haul around, known
a couple of small dogs, my wife, and you know
that ambient air sensor is definitely affecting my air conditioning.

(43:15):
And I just can't believe. I have been over this
thing a hundred times. I've traced wires. I've unless it's
maybe a sensor that I'm not recognizing, but every ambient
air sensor, even this one. When I looked it up
to purchase, it had like the little nippolgue pretty easy

(43:39):
to recognize. And I can't find it. The dealer couldn't
find it. And I've had three different auto mechanics, and
like I said, the one off road guy, which I
thought he would be able to find it, no problem.
None of us can find it. And I didn't want

(44:01):
to get into taking the electric mirrors off and all that.

Speaker 2 (44:06):
You don't want to do.

Speaker 6 (44:08):
The passenger mirror has the little service store under it
that you just pop off and it just has the
uh factory wires uh in there, but no ambient air sensor.
I'm at a loss.

Speaker 4 (44:23):
All right, Well, bring it by. I'll take care of you,
all right, I will much uh huh bye bye. All right,
let's go back to the phones. We've got Terry. Hey, Terry,
welcome to the car show.

Speaker 2 (44:34):
How can I help?

Speaker 5 (44:36):
I'll keep it quick so you can take more callers
because everybody's bapped up and.

Speaker 7 (44:42):
Nobody can get through.

Speaker 5 (44:43):
Yeah, I'm playing an electric or a hybrid vehicle. What
can I expect? The life expectancy of a battery on
a fully electric or a hybrid? How many years?

Speaker 4 (44:58):
So typically on a electric, they haven't really been out
long enough that I've seen one come in that has
one hundred hundred fifty two hundred thousand miles. So for
the electric, I don't to be honest with you, I
don't know what you can't expect on a hybrid I
just bought. I mean, I've seen press go two hundred
three hundred thousand miles and still on the original battery.

(45:21):
If you're gonna buy a hot between the two, if
you're gonna buy a hybrid or electric, my opinion hybrid.

Speaker 2 (45:28):
If you're gonna buy a hybrid, buy a Toyota.

Speaker 5 (45:32):
Okay.

Speaker 7 (45:33):
The other question I have real quick is if is
there any mechanics or any shops like other than the
dealers that work on these games.

Speaker 2 (45:43):
Absolutely?

Speaker 4 (45:44):
Yeah, I mean as far as electric, I mean like electric.
I can do tires and brakes or whatnot. But when
it comes to electric, no, Unfortunately, it's gonna pretty much
go to the dealer. Now, if it's a hybrid, yes,
I can work on hybrids to an extent. I do
have a buddy of mine that has that owns Cincinnati
hybrid down in down on Madison Road in Madisonville. But there,

(46:07):
if it's a hybrid, yes, there's people out there that
fix them. As far as electric, most of them have
to go back to the dealer.

Speaker 2 (46:14):
Okay, all rights, all right, thank you very much, Jared.

Speaker 4 (46:18):
I do apologize. Please call me back next week. I
gotta get I thank you so much for wait, and
I really do appreciate it. I've got to skidattle. I'll
be back next Saturday to answer all of your car questions.
