way to get on the road again. Good afternoon, and welcome to the

(00:57):
car show on fifty five KR seethe talk stations. I'm Daned on Ovan
here every Saturday to answer your carquestions. The number to call five one
three seven fifty five hundred. Thatnumber again, five one three seven nine
fifty five hundred. It's an absolutelygorgeous Saturday and Uh was just made it

(01:18):
in here. In fact, myproducers called me like, hey, where
are you at? Uh, that'slike I'm coming up the elevator, having
some work done in the house andthe contractors were digging and they said,
hey, we found this pipe andwe're gonna have to stop. And we
think it's a down spout. AndI'm like, no, no, no,
We're We're good. All the downspouts have been replaced. That's just
an old but I found it's reallyweird. It's it's just outside my back

(01:40):
door. We're having this like alittle concrete patio put in. And I
mean the child of the kitchens inthe in the dirt, the child all
the bathrooms is in the dirt. They found o all kind of they found
all kinds of stuff. It's justreally weird about uh. I think two
years ago we had the concrete replacedin our garage and they found an old
milk jug, like a fifties milkjug. My house is built nineteen fifty

(02:02):
one, so it was pretty neatto find these things buried undergrounds. Really
really really cool. So all rightagain, I'm taking your phoncals and I'm
call the number to call five one, three seven, five hundred. I
want to I like to speak ona topic that I've I've talked about many

(02:23):
times, and we are getting intothe days where it's starting to get a
little steamy, and um, youknow we're starting to turn on the air
conditioning, right, I had iton on the way here. And but
I do want to talk about too, and I you know, I won't
hit on this too much, butI want to explain. I had an

(02:44):
incident yesterday and sometimes again I fromthe bottom of my heart, I truly
do enjoy what I what I do. I do love what I do,
okay, And I do enjoy fixingcars and getting people back out on the
road. Okay. I'm a thirdgeneration business owner. My grandfather started it,

(03:05):
father took it over. And Itake pride in what I do,
and sometimes that that pride sometimes canget in the way of and get personal.
Right. And I had an incidentyesterday and I was I was doing
the best that I could to tryto explain how air conditioning works, and
this customer was just not having it. And again I take it personal as

(03:27):
if it's kind of an attack onme, right, because I take pride
in what I do in my nameand my brand, right, And I
did the best that the very bestI could to try to explain how it
works on air conditioning. And I'mand I thought this would be a good
teaching point, or at least andand so here here, here, here

(03:51):
it goes. She brought a vehiclein because she needed an oil change,
which is pretty standard. Right, there's no shouldn't be any problems there,
and the air conditioning was not working. Now, in order for any mechanic,
any mechanic I don't care who,I don't care if he's the best

(04:11):
mechanic in the world or not.Okay, in order to properly diagnose and
find out why the air conditioning isnot working, we need to fill it
up with free on. Okay,we need to charge it up. Okay.
So the best analogy that I coulddo is that if you had an
inner tube or a pool toy thattook air right and that had a hole

(04:32):
in it, how would you findout where that hole is? What would
you have to do? You wouldhave to fill that inner tube or that
pool tool toy or whatever. You'dhave to fill it up to find out
where that hole is. Okay, and free on is a gas it's not
you know, if you've got anoil leak, we can figure it out,
because it's gonna make it's gonna havea residue, if it's leaking transmission,

(04:54):
if it's leaking cool, we're gonnaable to find that. But free
on is a gas, Okay,it leaks out and it you don't know
where it leaked out at. Sowhat we have to do because obviously,
if the vehicle does not have anyfree on in it, the compressor is
not going to turn on. Sothere would be absolutely no reason to do
anything else. Sorry, I caughtthe sneeze. There would be no reason

(05:17):
we could not. We cannot furtherdo our job until we know that it
is full of free on, okay. And when we do this process,
we put a fluorescent dye in thesystem. Okay, so that we use
a black light. So typically whatwe'll do is we'll charge it up,
put the dye in there. Nineout of ten times, the air conditioning

(05:40):
is perfectly working. Now that freeon is not just it doesn't just evaporate,
doesn't just go away. It's notsupposed to leak out. Okay,
there is a leak in the system. Now that system has several components.
Okay, you have an AC compressor, that's what's you know, pumping the
free on through the system. Anevaporate so it goes from the compressor through

(06:01):
a line that could be leaked, you know, so the compressor could be
leaking, the line going to theevaporator could be leaking. The evaporators behind
the dash. It's kind of likea small heater core, and the free
on runs through through the evaporator andthen your blower is what's blowing that cold
air into the vehicle. Okay, that can leak as well. It then

(06:23):
goes to the front of the vehicleto the condenser, which is kind of
like a radiator. It cools thatfree on, and then it goes which
can leak as well, which isin front of the radiator, so any
type of rocks, any debris inthe road can puncture and put a hole
in it. It then goes ona line to back to the compressor and
there's your full cycle. But ifthere's a hole somewhere in the system,

(06:48):
and again if the free on leakedout, we don't know where it went
at. We don't know where itleaked out, so we have to start
this process now. In this particularsituation, customer was upset because the compressor
was replaced last year and she said, I needed to it needed to be

(07:12):
I should have got more than ayear out of it, and I multiple
times tried to explain the system andshe just wouldn't listen to me. And
again, I take it personally becauseI'm not you know, I'm not trying
to pull one over, you know, pull the wool of her eyes.
This is I. I did everythingI did to try to explain the system,
and I just thought that today wouldbe a teachable moment. There are

(07:32):
a lot of things, a lotof components that have to do with the
air conditioning. So whether you bringyour car to Donovan's or your your favorite
repair shop, I explained it asbest that I possibly could. And so
if you're find yourself on the otherend, not my end, but on
the other end and being a beinga customer and taking it into our pair

(07:55):
shop, and you're frustrated because ifyou've spent you know, X amount of
dollars to fix the air conditioning,I'm here to tell you that, Listen,
there are several other components and untilwe can do our tests, there's
not much more that we can do, and we have to start there.
And again I do take it abit personal because I can't I can't do

(08:18):
my job if I can't fill thevehicle back up with free on, and
so I just thought again it wasa teachable moment. Listen, the air
conditioning is a complex system. Iknow that we all like to have the
air conditioning, but far too often. And listen, at every repairshon,

(08:39):
every Donovans that you come to,we will explain the way I'm explaining it
on the air right now is theway we explain it to you at Donovance.
We don't just fill it up withfree on Jeorgia one hundred and seventy
five dollars and say good luck,Chuck. No, what we do is
we we have this conversation, wefill that up and then say hey,

(09:00):
in two weeks bring it back. There'll be no charge. Let's get it
back up in the air. Let'ssee if we can find out where that
die is leaking out at Sometimes mosttimes it takes one trip. Sometimes it
could take up to two or threetrips because if the evaporators leak in,
that's behind the dash, can't seeit, and it's it's quite the process.
So you know, just if you'reat a whether you bring your vehicle

(09:24):
a dominance or your your favorite repairshop, all I can ask, is
that listen, those you know yourmechanic is there to help you out and
fix your vehicle. Okay, isevery mechanic shop honest? No, probably
not. I don't think in anycircumstance in any business is every single one
honest. But when your name's onthe building and your third generation, I

(09:50):
can assure you that we're not hereto pull the wool over your eyes and
take advantage of anybody. We're herejust to fix your car. And if
you're happy with your mechanic and youtrust your mechanic, then just that you
know, then great, stay whereyou're at, and and and if you're
confused or upset or don't understand ormaybe not understand exactly what's going on,

(10:11):
they should be explaining it to youas best as they possibly can, Okay,
so that you understand and know whatit needs, what we need to
do in order to take care ofyour vehicle. Okay. Again, I
enjoy what I do, and Isometimes take it to heart when people get
upset with me because uh, they'remaybe confused or don't understand, or just

(10:35):
sometimes just no way of pleasing them. But I mean, it's all part
of the job. It's whether I'mworking on cars or selling Hamburgers, that's
gonna happen. But I'm here tosay that if you if you don't understand,
you know, ask questions and uhthat that you know, because again
it's important one to ask questions too. You know, we're here to get

(11:03):
you back out on the road,to make sure that you're safe and get
you to your job or get youto your son's game. Right I'm missing
my son's baseball game right now. We're you know, we're here to help
you out and uh, so,you know, try to cut us a
little bit of slack sometimes, youknow, we we are trying to do
our best car. Sometimes it's notlike going to a doctor. We say,
hey, doc, my knee hurts. Right, It's not everything's always,

(11:26):
uh, you know, black andwhite. You know, sometimes there's
stage gray. Sometimes there's things andprocedures that we have to do in order
to figure out what we need todo in order to get your car taken
care of. So, all right, again, the number to call five
one, three, seven fifty fivehundred. Coming up, our first question
is, uh, it's an airconditioning question, believe it or not.
But coming up, we've got Dave, tab and Graham. You're listening to

(11:48):
car show on fifty five KRC Thetalk station. Fifty five KRC the talk
station. Do you have a truck, camper, r V or a trailer
that needs body repair? If so, call my buddy Dave. Break minute.
Frank Heavy Truck Collisionary Pair located justAll five seventy five or Route sixty
three. It's convenient to both Cincinnatiand Date. With over thirty years of
experience including insurance work and fleetwork,Franks knows the most important things are quality

(12:11):
work or customer satisfaction. Frank's HeavyTruck Collisiony Pair pride themselves from doing the
job right and getting your vehicle backon the road. Call five one three
eight two nine ninety thirty eight twonine ninety thirty. We may not holdways
to agree, but we can agreeon one thing. Fifty five KRC is

(12:31):
the talk station taking your car questions. The number to call five one three,
seven four nine fifty five hundred.I apologize. I am here,
believe it or not. I madea rookie mistake. I've been doing this
for quite some time, but Imade a rookie mistake. I got here
and I was. I left myheadphones at home. Uh so I had

(12:54):
and believe it or not, thestudio does not they don't supply you with
headphones. So I had to runback home to get my headphones. And
luckily I don't live too far awayfrom the studio. But yeah, so
I am here, I am inthe building, and I was listening on
the radio about you know, mymy producer today and he hooked me up.
He threw in a great little quicksegment. Again, I do apologize,

(13:18):
but you know, air conditioning issomething that they were talking earlier on
the radio. I mean, it'sgonna feel like one hundred later on this
week. But I had a gentlemantoo, just to kind of I'm gonna
I'm gonna get to the calls aswell. We've got Randy and Dennis coming
up shortly here. But I'm gonnayou know, I had a gentlemen just
yesterday that came in and again theprocess and I can't emphasize this enough.

(13:43):
In order to try to diagnose andfigure out why the air conditioning's not working,
we have to do a diagnosis. We have to hook it up to
a machine, we have to findout there's free on in the system and
with that there's a charge. Andunfortunately this gentleman's AC was low. We
filled it up, but it stilldidn't work and it needed an AC compressor,

(14:05):
and he was kind of upset. He's like, well, I'm you
know, I'm paying you, youknow, one hundred and fifty dollars for
the diagnosis, but my AC stilldoesn't work. I'm like, well,
I understand that, but we haveto figure it out. We we don't
know. We can't do anything unlesswe know the car has the proper amount
of free on in it. Sohe was upset because he's like, well,

(14:28):
I paid you to do this, and yet my AC doesn't work,
and he didn't want to fix itbecause it was expensive. It needed a
compressor. It was like twelve hundreddollars. I get it, but we
have to do that in order todo you know, it's just something that
it's just processed that we have todo. Anybody's going to charge you any
repair shop you take it to,you have to diagnose it. You have

(14:48):
to make sure the car is fullof free on. There's no you know,
you know, most cars, youknow, if you want to know
if your car is low on oil, you pull your dipstick out right if
if your car's low on cool andyou check the reservoir, right, that's
not how AC works. AC againas a gas there's no way to check
it. You have to hook itup to a machine and you have to

(15:09):
find out whether or not that vehiclehas the proper amount of free on in
it. And again if the ifthe vehicle does not have enough free on
in it, the AC won't work. Okay, if you have too much
free on in it, the ACwon't work. You have to have the
right amount. And in order todo that, we have to hook it
up to a machine. There's noway that there's no way that you can

(15:31):
gauge that. So that's why there'sa charge there. And so just you
know again understand that I know thatit's it's a massive inconvenience to not have
AC in your vehicle. Uh,But in order to do anything in any
repair shop, I don't care whereyou go in this country, that's where
you have to start. So justso everybody knows. So all right,

(15:54):
all right, we're getting to thephones. The number to call five one
three seven fifty five hundred. We'vegot Andy, Hey, Randy welcome to
the car show. How can Ihelp? Hey, how are you?
Thanks for taking absolutely it says you'recalling, says your call from Wiscon says
you're calling from Wisconsin. Yeah,I Wisconsin Rapids right in the middle of

(16:17):
the state, and it's about ninetytwo degrees and I'm ready to head to
the pool here. Well, howcold does it get up there? Oh,
it gets down on probably minus eighteentwenty. Sometimes we can play we
down here in Cincinnat. Anyway,Hey, I got a two thousand and
eight f two fifty Super Duty, seventy thousand miles on it, and like

(16:47):
a couple of weeks ago, itused to idle like a wrong seven point
fifty. But now it's dropping downto five hundred, and then it goes
back up to seven fifty. Andit does it whether I have it in
driver park and after it's warmed up, and I tried putting some fuel injectors

(17:12):
stuff in it, and that didn'tseem to have nobody around well to even
look at it, because there's noidiot later on, Well any idea?
Sure? Is it a is itgasoling or diesel? No, it's a
fire for trade and gas for Okay, all right, So what I would

(17:36):
like you to do, have youtry to clean the throttle body. That's
what I was gonna do. Thenext the next thing to do. Yeah,
So I mean what I would tryto do. I mean usually when
it comes to idle, Now therethere's you know, you've got an idle

(17:56):
air control motor, you've got amass air flow sensor. I mean,
there's other components that can cause erraticidol. But what I would do is
something that you can do at homeby yourself. Get yourself a can of
throttle body cleaner. It's very inexpensive. It's not going to cost you a
fortune kind of yeah, yeah, absolutely, And you know, carbon will

(18:23):
build up in that throttle plate andwhat will happen is it'll it'll stick that.
You know, that throttle plate nowon an eight. I drive an
O seven f one fifty and mine'sthe five four trit and two. I'm
trying to think here. I don'tknow if it's electronic or not. I

(18:45):
can't think off the top of myhead. So you've got you know,
years years ago, you know, your throttle plate was operated by a cable,
right, so when you hit thegas, that's what operated the throttle
plate. But now these newer cars, and I don't know what you're a
cut off off on the F onefifties, but in or F two fifty
they would they would do it what'scalled a drive by a wire, which

(19:06):
is an electronic throttle body. Right, So what I would tell you to
do is obviously do not start thetruck, but put the truck in.
If you can pull the you wantto take the intake boot off, you
should be able to do that. It's usually going to be just two clams
from the from the air filter, from the air filter to the throttle body,
right, you're going to remove that. Turn the key on, okay,

(19:33):
And whether whether it's electronic or cabledriven, it really doesn't matter.
If you just turn the key on, don't start it and just you can
even do this, but you know, put a brick or something on the
on the gas pedal again with itnot running, and then clean it that
way. So if it's electronic, you can damage that throttle body. If

(19:56):
you try to open it up withlike a screwdriver or try to force it
open, you can you can dodamage. Right, So if you turn
the if you just turn the keyon, like in everything on, but
just not the car, run thetruck, run and and and hold that
gas pedal down and just you spraythat cleaner and get a I would recommend
a brush you can even use.You can use you can buy one there

(20:18):
or get a toothbrush or whatnot. And you want to clean around that throttle
plate. You can touch the throttleplate. I just don't want to see
you force the plate open because youcan do again, you can damage it.
And you just use you don't haveto use the whole can or anything
like that. You just any typeof carbon build up, any type of
black carbon build up. You wantto make sure that that's removed. Use

(20:40):
a towel, try to dry itup. Now. I will tell you
obviously, you know take you know, close the gas pedal, shut the
truck, or you know, turnthe key off, start it up.
When you do that, it isgonna kind of choke and and and not
want to run, and it's gonnamissfire and it's gonna act like you're like,
uh, oh, what I dowrong? Right? You didn't do

(21:00):
anything wrong that some of that thatcleaner will get in there and it's gonna
kind of act up until it burnsit off and then it'll be fine.
So just know that when you whenyou do that, if things not running
right, you're like, uh oh, I screwed something up. You didn't
screw anything up. It's just someof that cleaner gets in there and it's
gonna misfire. Kind of not wantto start maybe not one run. I
mean, don't use too much,but I mean there's no there's not enough

(21:22):
that you can hurt it. Butjust just know that when you try to
do it, if it acts upwhen you start it up, that's perfectly
normal, but I want to seeyou do that. And then also you
can try to clean the mass airflowsensor too. Again that is attached to
the air box itself, to littlescrews that are that hold that in.

(21:44):
Again, it's gonna be attached,it's gonna be near that air box.
And there's actually mass airflow sensor cleaneras well, and that's something that you
can do too. A lot.Sometimes mass airflow sensor is just by taking
the air filter box apart, youcan see the mass airflow sensor and then
you just right with mass airflow censorcleaner that can help as well. So
start with those two things. Thoseare things that you can do by can

(22:07):
of throttle body cleaner, mass airflowcensor cleaner. Clean those two components.
And like I said, if itruns a little a little weird on startup,
it's fine. It'll burn off andyou know, so sure try those.
Try those first, and then youget back to me and let me
know. If it's not fixed, then we'll go to everybody around here.

(22:29):
Said, well, if you don'thave an idiot laid out, they're not
going to touch it because they don'twant to spend the money to look at
it. And I'm like, wellyou whillz. You know, if I'm
going down the road with my fifthwheel and the thing quits, I'm screwed,
right Yeah, well yeah, Imean yeah, I mean that's kind

(22:49):
of the that's not the right wayto look at it. I mean,
they should at least look at it. But if I were you with the
miles that are on it, cleanthe throttle body, clean the mass airflow
sensor, make sure the air filteritself is clean and up to snuff,
and then okay, good good gooduhbly throttle plate's just probably just all gummed

(23:11):
up. And what happens is mostof the time especially when it's electronic,
which I think it is. Youknow, it just gets gummed up,
right. The motor itself is strugglingto open up that throttle plate because there's
so much carbon built up in there. It's really common. And like I
said, a brush or a toothbrushor anything like that, you spray that
cleaner in there and it'll break allthat down and should be running good as

(23:33):
new. If not, you callme back all right, thanks for the
phone call. You have a greatweekend you too, al right, take
care bye bye, all right, taking your phone calls, so I number
to call five one three seven hundred. That number gain five one three seven
fifty five hundred again. Phone linesare wide open. Coming up. We've
got Dennis. You're listening to thecar show on fifty five krs the talk

(23:56):
station. I have been a customerof Donovan for ten years. It's not
always easy to find a mechanic thatyou can trust, that isn't going to
take advantage of you. They treatedme respectfully, not talk down to me.
There are mechanics right down the road, but I chose to keep coming
back here because they treated me asfamily so much so that four years ago

(24:17):
I started working here. Hi DaleDonovan from Donovan's Auto entire Center, the
honest choice for car repair and Cincinnatisince nineteen fifty eight. Find the one
nearest you at donovantyre dot com. Some may not want to hear what you
have to say, but we do. Fifty five KRC the talk station taking

(24:37):
your car questions. The number tocall five one three seven four nine fifty
five hundred. Sorry, I wasyawning. Didn't sleep well last night,
wouldn't get a just didn't get agood night's sleep, So all right again,
Taking your phone calls. The numberto call five one three seven four
nine fifty five hundred. Let's goto the phones. We've got Dennis.
Hey, Dennis, welcome to thecar show. How can I help?
Hey? Thanks taking my call?I have uh got of O wait cion

(25:02):
XB and I was gonna I'm burningoil. Has do those uh apparently experimental
piston rings in there? Uh huhand uh so and I burned oil like
crazy. So I was gonna putin the ats what five O five c
R F c R O treatment inthere like uh, what's the name,
Scotty Kilbert suggests, But then Ia couple of people said, don't do

(25:26):
that, it might make it worse. Just like you know, if you
completely flush out a transmission, whatdo you think, what what's the I
don't think I've heard of the product. What's the product again? Uh at
S Chemical five O five c rF U c r F fuel system treatment

(25:47):
and the c r O oil systemoil system treatment. And I mean I
listened to Scott at Kilmert a lotand he swears by this stuff that cut
fuel system and the oil. Yeah. I mean, I haven't heard of
that exact product itself. I'll behonest with you. I mean, in

(26:07):
all the years that I've been doingthis, I've never seen a product out
there that's gonna take care of that'sgonna reverse what you're going through, or
maybe slow it down a little bit, maybe slow it down. But man,
I tell you what, every singleday of my life I have to
deal with cars that are burning oil. And I mean I got an next
I got a bmw X three atmy shop right now, and guy's gone

(26:30):
through, he's blown through three timingchains and it's it's ten thousand dollars every
time those chains go out because thesethings burn oil and then they stretch the
chains and whatnot. But I think, uh, the product that I use
a lot is Lucas. Have youever tried Lucas product? Yeah, no,
I that one yet. I likeLucas. Also, what about have

(26:51):
you tried BGG bg is It isn'tBOYD heard that one? BG is is.
It's a pretty it's called A It'scalled m o A. But you
gotta look into BG. I'm againI'm not familiar with the product that you're
talking about, but BG Products isa great is in my opinion, is

(27:14):
the best out there now. Again, he isn't boy g Is and George
h. BG Products is the name. You're not gonna like find it,
you know, you know AutoZone anythinglike that. You're gonna have to find
a supplier that has it. Butthey have like it's called m o A.
It's it's like this product that theyit's a three part kit, once

(27:37):
for a few you know, one'sa cleaner, once for the engine like
an engine flush, and then Ithink the other one is for throttle body
or something like that. But Ireally like their products. Again, I
apologize I'm not familiar with that, but uh, I think it might.
I think any of them will help. I don't know that you're gonna I
don't know that you're gonna get theresults that you're looking for though, Yeah,

(28:00):
unless looking at loosen up to thegunk around around the around the rings
hopefully. Yeah. I mean, like I said, you it should help.
It's designed to do that. ButI don't know that there's a product
that I've used that I've tried thatI was happy with and maybe necessarily reversed

(28:21):
or took care of the issue. It might help, but I don't know
again, if you're gonna be happywith the results, because at the end
of the day, that thing isjust what about have you replaced the PCV
valve? No? I took itout? Should it queaned it? And
you know it's rattling, so it'smaking you know, but I think I

(28:42):
should just go ahead and replace itanywhere. I would. I mean,
they're cheap enough, I would justreplace it. I mean, you know,
like you said, it was rattling, but you know what I mean,
as cheap as it is, andit's you know, you can buy
a PCV valve probably for that thingfor you know, ten twenty bucks probably
or no, yeah, after afteryou know, after COVID and all these

(29:03):
price changes. I mean, it'sridiculous what things cost anymore. I mean
a spark plug. I mean whenI started, when I started this business,
a spark plug was a dollar ninetynine. Now, I mean I
I just put plugs in a carthe other day. It was almost was
twenty seven dollars a plug. Imean, it's ridiculous. So but I
would I would change out the PCVvalve. You can try that product.
I don't again, to answer yourquestion, I don't think that there's gonna

(29:26):
be anything that you're gonna damage.No, I don't feel like it's like
a transmission when you flush transmission. No, that's not that's not gonna be
the case. I can tell youthat right now. Yes, don't ever
flush a transmission if it has neveryou know, has one hundred and sixty
three thousand miles on or something you'venever changed it. Yeah, no,
you're not gonna You're not gonna hurtit by putting any product in there.

(29:49):
You're not gonna hurt it. Again, I'm not familiar with that product,
but look into BG two and Lucas. I like those two the best.
But again I would go into withnot having a high or a tremendous amount
of you know, I don't thinkit's gonna stop. I mean with with

(30:11):
the amount of miles, I mean, those rings are just probably wore out,
and you know, like you knowthat oil is just getting past those
rings. I mean, I talkabout it all the time on this show.
It's like, man, it's amassive problem, and just nobody,
uh, you know. And again, my biggest gripe is that I believe
that the industry is misleading people. They tell people to focus on the light,

(30:33):
focus on when when the car tellsyou to change the oil or change
the oil once a year, youdo only you only need to do it
every ten thousand miles. That isabsolutely ridiculous. And because they every just
about every car out there is burningoil because of the way they're designed.

(30:53):
And they're going to tell you that, hey, if you burn a quarter
oil every thousand miles, that's within their parameters. You know, that's
normal. And if you do themath, if you've got a little four
cylinder car that's burned, you knowa cord every thousand miles and the thing
only holds four courts and you're goingten thousand miles. If you do the
math that car has doesn't have anyoil in it, and then the chain

(31:15):
stretch and then they're blowing up,and I mean, it's it's every day,
so and I can't harp on itenough. Like changing the oil and
making sure that the oil is fullis the cheapest and easiest and simplest thing
to do to get the most lifeout of your car. It's the life
blood of the car. And justmaking sure that you're checking it or you

(31:36):
know, I always tell my customerslike, bring it by. You can
bring it by any time of theday. We will gladly come out and
check your oil and make sure itis full and make sure that you're not
running low because it does tremendous amountof damage, you know, and these
cars aren't cheap, and you knowthey're not getting anty cheaper. No,
So all right, I appreciate yourtime, all right, Dani s take

(31:57):
care man, Good luck to you. All right. So yeah, I
just you cannot I cannot emphasize enough. I don't care if your car is
two years old or it's twenty yearsold. You need to be made you
need to make sure that you're atleast checking the oil. And again,
if you're like Dan, I don'tknow how to do that. Or you

(32:19):
know, some of these cars theydon't even have a dipstick anymore. You
gotta run through, you gotta dothe computer. You gotta go through the
computer or whatnot. But listen,Uh, I can tell you any one
of any one of my locations, you can come by and just say,
hey, can you check them oil? We will gladly do it for you,
and if you need it, we'lltop you off. Uh. You
know, obviously they'll be there'll bea cost for the oil. But you
can do it yourself though. Butyou know it's it's the most important thing

(32:45):
that you can do for your car. And I just can't emphasize it enough.
And again, all of our locations, you can go to donovantire dot
com. Uh find out the closestlocation to you. But you can bring
that by at anytime. You don'tneed to call ahead. There's no need
to make an appointment. You swingin, just say hey, do you

(33:05):
mind checking oil? If I needoil? Top it off and you know,
you know it might be you knowten, you know, nine,
ten, twelve, bus. Itdepends on what oil your car has in
it. Some of these oils areridiculously expensive, but you know we'll be
glad to do that. I canassure you your car. You're gonna get
so much more life out of yourcar if you're checking it, will I

(33:27):
will. I'm telling you, focuson the sticker. Do not focus on
what the car tells you. Youknow so many times I go, hey,
you're due for an oil change, and customers, well, my car
says I have twenty percent left. Please don't do that. It's not just.
That does not mean the car's notlow on oil. You could literally
have a quart of oil in thereand it could be at twenty percent.

(33:50):
It does not mean what the levelis. That just means the life and
your car literally could be out ofoil. So focus on the sticker.
Every pair shop, every dealership, every privately owned business, every oil change
shop will put a sticker in thewindow. Please. The simplest thing that
you can do is follow the sticker. Do not tell you do not do

(34:12):
what the car tells you do.Do not tell you what the dealer tells
you to do. Follow the sticker. That's the best and easiest thing that
you can do to get the mostlife out of your vehicle. Okay,
and it's it's it's absolutely important. There's so much confusion out there as to
when it should be done, andjust about every car out there nowadays is
fully synthetic. When I started doingthis, it was, you know,

(34:35):
it was it was you know, conventional oil, and then it was like
the blend oil. Now it's synthetic. Just about every car out there synthetic.
Okay, So when I started doingthis, it was like, Hey,
if you're using a conventional oil, change it every three thousand. If
you're using a synthetic oil, changeit every five thousand. I'm still sticking
to that. I don't care howadvanced these cars are. It's important that

(34:57):
you stick to five thousand miles everyoil change. I just I can't emphasize
it enough. So, but hewas trying to, you know, trying
to do something. At least hewas a you know, you got to
understand that these cars are burning oiland you got to make sure that you're
checking them. And he was doingthe right thing. He's trying to get
an additive to try to slowly reverseit. But unfortunately, there's not a

(35:19):
ton of things that you can dounless you replace the piston rings themselves.
So again, taking your phone callsand it'll call five one, three,
seven four nine fifty five hundred comingup. We've got Stewart and Gary.
You're listening to the Car Show onfifty five KRC the talk station r VA.

quality work and customer satisfaction. Frank'sHeavy Truck Collision Repair prides themselves and doing
the job right. And get inyour vehicle back on the road. Call
five one, three eight two nineninety thirty eight to nine ninety thirty taking

(36:08):
your car questions again the number callfive one, three, seven, nine
fifty five. Running out of timehere, but let's get back to the
phones. We've got Stewart, Hey, Stuart, Welcome to the car show.
How can I help? Yeah, thanks for taking my call. Yeah,
I have a twenty eleven Toyota Sienaand I had the air conditioner checked

(36:29):
out, and they did what yousaid earlier. They filled it up and
also put the dye in it.And then it was like three days before
we were going to Florida. Soit was running great. The air conditioner
work perfectly, and I guess outof sight, out of mind. I
haven't taken it back since mid Mayto let them look and see if there's

(36:49):
a leak or anything, because ithas been working. So I'm like,
you know, I don't am Ihave the woods or should I have to
take it back? As you saidearlier that it has to be leak if
it's they said it was thirty full. Yeah no, put it in here.
Yeah no, I don't think you'reout of the woods. I mean
I would take it back this year. The problem. The problem is if
you wait till like next season.Well, here's the deal. If it's

(37:12):
a slow leak, right, itmight be it could be three years before
it's it's empty again. Right,But what happens is that die If let's
just say the condenser's leaking, right, Well, you know the condenser sits
right in front of the radiator, right, so if that if it's leaking
there, we'll obviously rain salt snowwhatever, it'll wash that die away.
So what happens is you end up, Hey, it's leaking it, it's

(37:36):
empty again. We fill it backup, and you've just spent another you
know, whatever they charge you.You know, we we started one hundred
and fifty. It depends on whattype of free on's in it. I
don't think you're out of the woods. If it was in May, I
would take it back here. Here'sthe other thing is like on the uh
it says you've got a sienna.Yeah, yeah, I mean I would.

(38:00):
I mean, I don't know what. How what your garage charges.
We don't charge our customers to blacklight the ac. It doesn't all.
It's a matter of just getting itup in the air, using a black
light, putting some yellow glasses on, and just trying to see if you
can find it. I'll be honestwith you. A lot of times,
not a lot of times, butthere there are times where we can't find
it right And usually if you can'tfind the fluorescent dye, nine out of

(38:25):
ten times it's coming from the evaporator. The evaporator is behind the dash.
You can't see it. But whatwhat we what? What? What you
have to do is you ever whenyou have air conditioning on, you ever
know it's like you know, thewater dripping from the evaporated's sweating and it's
dripping on the ground. Yeah,so there's there's a drain tube. So
a lot of times if it isthe evaporator, you know, you'll see

(38:47):
dye coming out of that tube thedrain. Uh. But not all the
time. So when they when theybuild those cars, they put like a
foam around the evaporator, right totry to keep it insulated, kind of
like a like a cool right,And a lot of times that die will
absorb all that or I'm sorry, that foam from the evaporaor will absorb all

(39:07):
that die. And it really sometimesit'll take two to three times for us
to charge it before we can findit. So if they're like, hey,
you know, sir, we can'tfind anything. We don't see anything
wrong, I wouldn't go like,oh right, great, you know there's
no problem. There's a problem becauseit was low. But they may not
be able to find it because again, sometimes it takes two or three charges

(39:30):
to to find it. And thething is, it's like with yours,
yours is a says here twenty eleven. You know you've got you've got one
thirty four, but they've got thisthis stuff now it's one two, three
four y f And this stuff isexpensive. I mean it's ridiculously expensive.
I mean an AC recharge starts atthree hundred and fifty dollars. And you

(39:53):
know the thing when I was talkingabout earlier in the show, when we
charge it everybody, and I alwaysdo the best that I possibly can to
let my customers know, like, hey, listen, we charged it up.
We did not fix anything. Wejust filled it back up, right,
So a lot of people were frustrated, like, well, you guys

(40:14):
just fixed my AC last year. Now it's not working again. It's like,
well, we didn't fix anything,we just filled it back up.
So but uh no, I don'tthink again to answer your question. Really,
you know, you're not out ofthe woods. I get it back
there. Just call them up,just say, hey, can you black
light my ACC if you can findany die because again, if you wait
till next year, it may washaway and they won't find it. And
then you got to you know, pay all that money again, and then

(40:36):
you know, back to square. You know square one again. Sounds good?
Then I'll do that. I justlike I said, out of sight,
out of mind. Yeah, no, I get it. I mean
I believe me. Uh you know, I I understand. I've I'd have
to go through it all again nextyear, right yeah, I get it
in there before. Uh you know. And here's the thing too, is

(40:59):
like a lot of people think alot of people think you know that with
AC it's it's under pressure. It'salways leaking no matter you're no matter you're
driving it or using it, orthe car, the car sitting in your
driveway right now, it's leaking thatfree on. So just know, you
know a lot of people like, well I haven't even used it that much.
Well, it doesn't matter. It'salways under pressure. It's always gonna

(41:20):
leak, no matter if you're usingit or not. So know that too.
So yeah, well good, thankyou, all right, all right,
well, thank you. I appreciatethe phone call you every great day.
So that's the thing. That's theI would say probably the most difficult
part of my job is air conditioningbecause there's so many components. Again,

(41:40):
You've got the A C condenser,you got the a C compressor, you
got the a C evaporator, you'vegot the switches, you've got the the
pressure switches, you've got the yeah, you've got the dryer, you've got
the lines. It's a very complexsystem. We all like to have air
conditioning, uh you know, I'ma proponent of it as well, but

(42:01):
there's so many components and it's avery complex system. So just know,
if you have an air conditioning question, you're always welcome to call me.
You can call me here at theradio show, or you can call me
at my shop. I'm currently atthe new location, which is the it
was formerly Auto Foreign, it's nowDonovan's Auto Foreign. It's located at the

(42:23):
corner Montgomery Road in Data. That'swhere I'm currently at getting that thing,
getting that place up and running. And we're doing great. We're very busy
and too in fact, we're toobusy. I had some I didn't have
any place to park any cars yesterday. But but listen, if you know,
again, if you're hy, youdon't want to call the radio radio

(42:43):
station or whatnot, you can alwayscall me at my shop. Again.
I'm typically at the new shop,Auto Forn. It's five one three seven,
three one eight nine eight nine. It's five one three seven three one
eight nine, eight nine. You'realways welcome to call me if you have
any questions. Again, it isa complex system, and I will I

(43:04):
promise you that I will walk youthrough and help you out as best I
possibly can. It's it's not always, you know, cut and dry.
It's not always you know, it'snot always just like, oh, you
know a lot sometimes people are like, well, can't you just hook it
up to a computer and it'll tellyou. That's not always. I mean,

(43:27):
believe me, all these newer cars, yes, a lot of the
times, yes we can do that, but not all the time. Especially
with air conditioning, there's no youcan't hook the car up to a computer
and it can tell you if it'slow on, free on or not.
Our systems are not sophisticated enough yet. I'm sure down the road at some
point will be there, but asof right now, in order to charge

(43:49):
your AC, that's what we haveto do is evacuate the system, find
out how much Freon's in it,uh, and then put back what was
what was yours, what was alreadyin there, and then fill it back
up with what is the proper amount. I would highly highly recommend that you
not try to do that on yourself. You know a lot of these auto
repair you know, suppliers will offeryou like you know, basically AC and

(44:14):
a can and they'll put a sealerin there or whatnot. Please do not
do that. You're just asking forproblems, you really are. Please don't
do that. If you're a doit yourself or you want to put your
own battery in or put your ownbrakes on, that's fine, but when
it comes to a sea it's verysophisticated system. Just make sure that you
get it to a professional. Sohey, everybody, have a great weekend.

(44:34):
I thank you for Thank you everybodyfor the phone calls. I'll be
back next Saturday to answer all yourphone calls. Have a great weekend.
