Speaker 1 (00:00):
John Oates, everybody, John Oates, Welcome to the show. I'm Quinn.
That's can Terror. We're happy to have you, sir.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Hey, thanks for having me.

Speaker 3 (00:07):
Congratulations. I just grabbed your new album that just came
out a few days ago called Oats. The second single
is off of It's a real thing going on. Man,
you got the sound and you still got the chops. Bro,
you feel good about this album?

Speaker 2 (00:19):
I do. I love this album. I'm really happy with it.
The people that I worked with are fantastic. A lot
of young people, a lot of great young collaborations, and
a lot of energy. And it's kind of a return
to my R and B roots.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
He definitely has an R and B feel for sure.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
I have to add Sole in there.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
We just came off popularity less than a year ago
of that yacht rock documentary. How do you feel about
the term, John, I don't.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Care for the term. I don't even know what it means.
I don't know who invented that. I've never been on
a yacht, never owned one, so I don't know what
that means. But you know what, here's the bottom line.
You know, the music they play is fantastic and people
love that music. In fact, on Serious XM. I think
yacht rock channel is probably their most popular channel.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
We got one on radio app ye everywhere.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Yeah yeah, And it's funny because you guys do you
guys are guys? So I mean you were never considered
yacht rock technically, which is good, right.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
No, I didn't think we were. I never even thought
about it.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
Okay, honestly it's John Oates from uh Well they used
to be in a duo Kant. But how do you
identify these days, mister Oates? When you're out there as
a musician, what what what are you doing? You know?
People must want to then gravitate towards the previous version
of you.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
No they don't believe it or not. It's very interesting.
I of course play some of the older songs, but
not many, to be honest. You know, I have nine
solo albums. I've been making solo albums since twenty and
twenty I mean, I'm sorry, since the year two thousands,
So for twenty five years I've been making solo albums.
So it's not like I just started and it's just

(02:00):
you know, I I here's what I here's the way
I look at it. If you want to hear Hall
of Oaths. You know, you can listen to those classic
records for the rest of your life. You can go
watch old videos if you want, but those days are
behind me now, and I that's how I look at it,
And I don't you know, I don't want to do
a show that's like half of a Hall of Oats show.

(02:20):
To me, that's that wouldn't that's not really fair to
the music, you know, or the legacy. So when I
go out there, I play what I want. I do
old rock and roll, I do old R and B.
I do my new stuff, play a couple of Hall
of Notes hits, and everybody seems to like it. So
no one's really expecting me to be half of hollen Oaths.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
I saw you play. Do you have a house in Aspen, Colorado?

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Yep?

Speaker 1 (02:43):
Yeah, I think I saw you play in Aspen years back.
And you are your own man. You can say that.
You can see this show. He's his own man and
doing his own thing. It sounds fantastic.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
I love that John John oas I love on this
new album you give us like third tracks. Two of
them are are versions of walking in Memphis. How did
you get to How did that Mark Cone song end
up on.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Your new album. Yeah, it's in a weird way. I
don't know if you guys remember or not, but I
did the Masked Singer about a year ago, and the
first song that they wanted me to sing on Masked
Singer was walking in Memphis, and I always loved this song.
I love the Mark Cohen song, and so I wanted
to do a bit more of an R and B
version of it. So we changed the arrangement and I

(03:30):
did it on Masked Singer. And ever since then, I
was stuck in my head. And when it came time
for the new album, I said, you know, I want
to record my own version of that. And then after
we did it, I ran into a very cool e
DM DJ named Gravitz who's really popular in the in
the you know, in the dance music world, and he
did a remix. So we've got two versions of it

(03:51):
on the album.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
It's really really good, and I encourage our listeners to
go out and grab John Oates brand new album called Oats.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
The next big thing is beatboxing. You should make a
beat box version of that one. Hey, you never get
to you never know out there?

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Hey, I like I picture you hanging out with like
Martin Sexton. Do you get who do you who do
you hang out with that does what you do in
your in your industry?

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Nobody really but but you know, I'm in Nashville too,
and most of the time, and uh, you know, I'm
in music city, so I hang out with all kinds
of people. It depends on who's who's in town, and
you know, people come through town all the time. I'm
good friends with the with the Psychedelic Furs, you know,
Richard Richard Butler's a good buddy of mine. He was
just in town. We went to see him. Uh, you know,

(04:35):
I love Vince Gill. I go to see Vince Gill
when he's playing in town.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
I've always wanted to see a Vince Gill at the
Opry show. Have you seen him at the Opry?

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah, you got to see Vince Gill. He's one of
the greatest artists of all time. I really believe that these.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
Big artists in Nashville all getting together at various other
big artist's house before their shows and pregaming.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Not really, it doesn't really work like that, but a
lot of artists do you you know, go to the
shows and hang out and jam and things like that.
So it's very cool.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Here, that's like one of the things people always say
in Nashville that they don't necessarily mean, is we got
to get together. We got to get together and write.
You guys say that a lot.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Oh, it happens all the time. It happens all the time. Hey,
let's get together, right And sometimes it really does work
really well. But a lot of times, you know, it's
just a good thing to say.

Speaker 1 (05:24):
If Jelly Roll came to you and said that, would
you would you?

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Would you?

Speaker 1 (05:28):
Would you decide to maybe write with him?

Speaker 2 (05:30):
Hell? Yeah? I like.

Speaker 3 (05:34):
John Oates. I'm jelly rolled out. He's everywhere enough jelly
for me.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
For me, John would do all the writing, that's all.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
So listen. I hate it. It's a cliche question, but
your voice sounds great. Do you do anything to keep
it that way?

Speaker 2 (05:50):
I yeah, I'm very conscious of voices like a muscle.
And you know, the older you get, the more the
more precious it is, and the more you got to
protect it. I can't do that many shows in a row.
I got to be careful about that. I know how
to sing, so I can always modulate how I handle
my vote voice, but I try to stay in shape,
and staying in shape is probably the biggest the biggest thing,

(06:13):
you know, breathing exercises, I ride bikes. I'm always very
healthy and that's the only way I can do what
I'm doing.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
And he's got that big protective brush over the top
lip which protects any particles.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
That helps.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
If you shaved when it ruined the brand, I think so.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
I think so. It might change my whole life.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
You never listen. Congratulations on the new album. I've downloaded it.
It's called Oats. We we love your music. We appreciate
all you've done, and we appreciate the time this morning.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
John Oates, thank you so much, very much. Thanks many
can't tear our pigs. Fine six
