Speaker 1 (00:02):
True. Good.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Let's talk Giants football, brought to you by Curtis lumber
your local full service home center and lumberyard. And now
from the New York Giants pre and postgame show, it's
John Schmelk.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Good morning, gentlemen. Yeah, day, late night last night, Hi John. Yeah,
probably rolling in the house around like two twenty or so,
so we're about four hours. It's like four and a
half hours sleeps not too bad. That's the time I.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Got on morning.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
We appreciate you doing this. And I you know, I
don't listen to a ton of games because the Giants
aren't my team, but I was listening to you last night. Jeez,
we're lucky to have you. John. Here you go, John,
You're so good at what you do.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
John.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Really, sometimes I think we forget you have another job.
You're really good at that.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Well, guard I I appreciate that. Did you have the
pregame show on?
Speaker 3 (00:54):
I'm assuming I had the pregame show on? Yeah, you
guys sounded great.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
Sorry, that's aye. I appreciate that, and I feel and
I feel honored to be able to deal with Tiki
who really who? And I love working with him a A.
He's a great dude too. He does the work, which
is great, and he really knows himself. Like, for example,
I'm talking to him Wes today and he's like, yeah,
you know this morning sometimes. So I rewatched the Giants
(01:18):
Cowboys game again and I'm like, what do you mean Monday.
I want to watch it again this morning to refresh myself.
And I'm like, dude, that's the one that likes to
do the work, and that's the fantastic Will you.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Guys sound great? The Giants pre and post game show.
The Giants are zero and three losing to the Chiefs.
It's it's the post says, it's gotta be one or
the other. It's gotta be Dable or dart were I
think we're at the Jackson Dark part of the season
right hopefully.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Well, I mean, I don't know why it would be
one or the other. I mean I think it could
be bold. I don't know why that's I don't know
why that's a why that's a thing necessarily. Look, the
question is and I'm gonna sound like a broken record
on this and then I apologize and I said this
to you in the offseason when they're gonna put Jackson
dar Day and when they think he's ready to handle
being an NFL starting quarterback, and we don't know what
(02:03):
that development. Excuse me, I'm sorry has looked like behind
the scenes since training camp has ended, we don't get
to watch practice anymore. What is he like in the meetings?
What does he like running the scout team. I don't
know the answer to these questions. No reporter knows the
answer to this question. Only Dable does. One thing I
will think is this, he's come in the last three
weeks and had a little bit of a package right
(02:24):
he's come in, He's run a lot of red option,
not once in those package plays as he thrown an
actual pass. Really he threw on the way he ran
last night on one to me, if they thought he
was really ready to throw and run an offense, that
(02:44):
package would be bigger and would include more of that stuff.
And think again, maybe Brian Dable will come and talk
to the media today and say Jackson Ought's are starting
quarterback next week. That could happen. I don't know, but
they're the only ones that know. If he's ready, you
don't want to put him in too early. He struggles
and then it hurts his development, and then you hurt
his future. So these are things that we don't have
answers to and only the Giants do. I do know
(03:07):
they want to be patient with him. They brought Russell
Wilson in for a reason. Obviously, the offense yesterday and
the passing game was not good enough. Brian Dabeles said
that I feel confident saying that as well. So that's
the push and pull here. You want to win football games.
The offense needs to score points. But you don't want
to put your young quarterback, who you think could be
your franchise quarterback, into early where he really struggles. Your
(03:30):
offense has problems against a really good defense in the
Chargers next week, by the way, and then you hinder
his development. So it's a very very fine line to walk,
and we'll see how the Giants handle it.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Guys, I can't help but to dovetail this part of
the conversation with.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
Did you see Daniel Jones this weekend? Hello?
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Put up forty one?
Speaker 1 (03:49):
I think, yeah, I mean this weekend, how about this
this month? I mean, he's been looked and I'm so
happy for Daniel. Everyone is. He's such a good dude.
And I thought and look, I said this and talk
about it sound like a broken record that I thought
once you got better pieces around him, he'd be better.
I'm not sure if I ever thought he'd be vinced,
because he right now is playing like one of the
(04:09):
top of a top five quarterback in the league. But
good for him. I'm happy for him, and we'll see
how long he gets sustained the success or if teams
start figuring out what they're doing a little.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Literally back back to Jackson Dark, though, you're you're making
it sound like Dabele has time to for you know
what I mean, Like David couldn't go through the coach
trying to save his save himself.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Yes, but does it help Brian Dabel if Jackson Dark
comes in and plays poorly, but exactly, you have to
make sure of that when you put him in he's
ready to play well. And I don't think John, I
don't think the Mara family and the Tish Familey. Again,
I'm not in these meetings. I don't know anything, but
my sense is that they're not an ownership group that
(04:56):
that that's gonna pull the trigger and make it change
in like week five or six. So I think in
that way, he does have a little bit of time.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Hey, Scataboo's for real and at least he's exciting to watch. Yeah, yeah,
that's something.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
No, Look, he's a fun player. The fans love him.
The minute he checks into the game, they're all going
boo for Skataboo. It's gonna be a great friend that
he can never get booed, you know. Head But when
he goes in and it sends, you know, and it's
a chanting his name and they bolling him, nobody knows,
so good for him. But yeah, he's a lot of fun,
(05:29):
really good player. The Giants really enjoy having him for sure.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
What was the most surprising thing of NFL Sunday? Was
it Cleveland knocking off Green Bay?
Speaker 1 (05:38):
To you? Yeah, I mean in that game, it wasn't
It wasn't very it was. It was pretty close throughout.
The Packers just couldn't score a lot of points. Uh.
The Browns defense is legitimately good. I mean they are
a good defense. They're a good football team, So that
to me was surprising. I think the blowout between the
Vikings and the Yes, the King the Bengals, thank you,
(06:04):
that was surprising. The Seahawks absolutely obliterating the Saints. That
to me was was also somewhat surprising, and not that
they won, just said it was a complete, you know, shelacking.
So yeah, I mean, look, it was a crazy week.
You would like you in the span of like ten minutes,
you know, at the end of the one o'clock games,
(06:24):
where you had four or five field goal blocks that
changed the tenor of some of these games. It was bizarre.
That's why the end, dude, That's why the NFL is great.
It was a week of upsets and weird things. The
great comeback by the Eagles. That was an unbelievable game.
It was just a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
I was saying the exact same thing, man. They just
they've got the formula for sure.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
And by the way, fells Bill Belichick's playing five hundred
football down there.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
And at the time I saw him lose to who Richmond.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Yeah, something like that.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
Charlotte Richmonds half court, and I.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Did not see that. She's still out there, you know,
working it.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
John Schmelt. The Giants broadcasting what you said, the Chargers
next week, So there's a good chance we're going four.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
We do this. Well, Look, the Chargers are plumb like
one of the best teams in football. So I you know,
I don't know what this is going to look like.
I think they can play well, but look, the Giants
have to score more points. Guys. They score points in
one game this week this year against the team that
plays terrible defense. We saw with the Bears. That's the
Cowboys this week, right, I mean they they've the Bears,
(07:30):
you know, marched up and down the field on the
Cowboys defense thinks. So you have to figure out a
little bit exactly what this Giants defense is and we'll
continue to learn that as we go along here.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
John Smelt's a total pro. He works to the number
one media market in the country. We're lucky to have
him here mid market.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
We're very thanks than.
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Tell that to my kids. I'm appreciating. Thank you.
