Speaker 1 (00:01):
So let's talk Giants football, brought to you by Curtis
lumber your local full service home center and Lumberyard. And
now from the New York Giants Pre and postgame show,
it's John Schmelk.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Welcome back, Happy to hear gentlemen.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Happy new year, John. That catch I listened to the
game yesterday, How you guys sounded good? The Giants close
out the season with a thirty four to seventeen win
over the Cowboys. What now, John, When are decisions made
about coaching and stuff like that?
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Well, I mean, the Giants are going to have a
coaching search, right, I mean that'll probably start today where
they start making phone calls and they start setting up
interviews this week, you know what I mean. So they'll
have those conversations today and they'll figure out kind of
when those interviews would start based on a lot of
the reports that I've seen, and based I mean, you'll
probably have interviews over the course of two weeks, give
(00:56):
or take, and then you'll you'll kind of figure out
where you are and you decide who of the best
guys to the job. But most importantly, guys, you have
to figure out you know, today and tomorrow and maybe
even next week to thinking of what happens to the postseason. Right,
what coaches that have currently employed shake loose. We already
had one coach get fired yesterday, Raheem Morris from the Falcons, Right,
(01:17):
you know what other coaches that the Giants might be
interested in lose their jobs of the last couple of
days that could be involved in that coaching search.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
So I can't be excited until we get a coach
for the was it fund for the fifth pick in
the draft? Right, because coach changes everything? I suppose the
GM two. But Shane is staying on, right, Jean.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
That's what it sounds like. Look, I've heard before, you know,
on the Monday after the season, that people were safe,
like we all thought, you guys arebably remember that as
I came on with you Monday morning, I told you
I thought Joe Judge will be back, that I thought
that he I thought he was going to be safe,
and you know, and that's kind of what the reporting was.
And that's the same reporting we're seeing with Joe Shane.
(01:58):
But look, the ownership will talk to him, they'll make
that decision over the next couple of days. It appears
that he's going to be safe that they're going to
side on the side of continuity here. But we'll see,
he said, know that next couple of days, they might
know that they did by the end of today. Even so,
we'll see where that goes. But it looks like he
will lead the coaching search.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
It's John Schmelt the Giants Pre and post game show,
the interim coach, Mike Kafka. How did he did he
help himself? And could he be just like you know,
shrapnel in a way if they bring in a coach,
good question another coach, you know, it's.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
A good question. You know he finished the season strong,
winning two games. Now you'd beat two teams that really
weren't trying to win. So I think you kind of
put that into the equation too, right, Like the Raiders,
like benched everybody last week, they're terrible and the Cowboys,
you know, took all their guys out of halftime in
this week and you know they clearly weren't, you know,
trying their best to win. So that's part of it.
(02:54):
That he was involved in a really long losing streak,
which is not good. He'll be in the next He'll
be involved, know, could he be if you hire a
defensive coach case stay on his OC. I guess that's possible.
I'm not sure if you would want to do something
like that either, ar given he was just a head coach,
so that remains to be seen. But I'm sure they'll
interview him and then he'll be in the mix and
(03:14):
he'll be in the conversation because he he did do
a good job bleast, you know, a month and a
half since he started up as the in from head coach.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
Who's the best team in the playoffs? And if it's
you're gonna say Seattle, then who's the second best team? No?
Speaker 2 (03:28):
You know what I mean. I don't even think it's obvious.
This is such this is the most wide open playoffs
that I've probably seen since maybe twenty two thousand and eight,
maybe where you just don't really know what's going to
happen in the postseason. I mean, if I to guess,
I'd probably say the Seahawks. I think you can make
(03:48):
the argument that it's the Rams. I think that's another
team that you gonna have the conversation about. I don't
think it's anyone in the AFC, even though the Broncos
defense is very good and well, you know, and you
know what team I think is really dangerous. And I
really you're gonna laugh when I say the name, because
you're gonna say, oh, well, they're going to figure out
a way to mess things up. The Jaguars are probably
(04:11):
playing some of the best football in the National Football League.
They've wait, They've been really good on offense with Trevor Lawrence.
Their defense with Anthony Campinelli, a Jersey guy, has actually
been really good as well. But it's the Jaguars, and
it's Trevor Lawrence, and their playoff history is not great,
So I don't know if they're going to carry it over,
but I think the Jaguars are quietly one of the
(04:32):
more dangerous teams in the postseason.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Well, the Giant season is over, but we'd like to
keep you on John as our football guys. We go
through the playoffs. Is that absolutely?
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Guys, We do that every year. Of course, I'd be
insulted if you didn't ask me if the Dark and
Roll all right.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
We're tight on time. But I got to tell you,
the Jets on a piece of forever history, right, first
team in one hundred years to not get an interception.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Dude, that is an humble You figure that they would
give one by accident at some point, right, like a
ball as bad as a line of scrimmage or something
like that. That is a crazy, crazy stat And by
the way, just for a big picture real quick, the
first two pitching the draft of the Raiders and the Jets,
so that those are probably going to be the two quarterbacks.
So the draft night got a little less interesting given
(05:15):
the results here, and the Johns will be picking fifth.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
We appreciate is Kelsey. Plus did we see his last game? Yeah?
Did we see his last game? Good question?
Speaker 2 (05:23):
I would say yes, I think he will retire and
we'll ride off with Taylor Swift into the sunset.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
But checking with you on Friday.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Thanks again with hey, you have a great week. Boys,
happen to you.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
