Speaker 2 (00:22):
Business Times to say very good morning to Mitch McCann
from the US kDa.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Mitch good a, Tim, How are you? Oh?

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Pretty good? Thanks? Hey Trump? Trump's Is he looking like
he's going to become an expansionist president? If I can
put it that way? With his comments around the Canada
Green on the Panama Canal. What's going on is they're
trolling us?

Speaker 3 (00:41):
Yeah, I can't work it out.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
I suspect Donald Trump is trolling all of us once again.
Now he's going to be president in about twenty five
days from now, and while he is preparing to transition
into office, he found the time on Christmas Day to
fire out a series of social media messages, one of
which has caused quite the stir. And the background to
this is that Donald Trump has been suggesting things like Canada,

(01:04):
if it doesn't want to pay US tariffs, it can
become fifty first state of America. He suggested that they
might take back ownership of the Panama Canal because they've
been ripped off American ships when they passed through. And
he's also suggested that America could buy Greenland. They could
just buy it, although Greenland seers it's not for sale.
So yesterday he went on Truth Social, his own social

(01:26):
media platform, and he said, Merry Christmas to all, including
the wonderful soldiers of China who are lovingly but illegally
operating in the Panama Canal. He said Christmas quote to
Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada, saying that if he wanted
to become part of the US, its citizens' taxes would
be much lower. And also Merry Christmas to the people

(01:47):
of Greenland, which is needed by the US for national
security purposes. So obviously a discussion of expansion here. But
perhaps Donald Trump is just trolling us, looking for something
to do over the Christmas period.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Where's he getting his ideas from and is there one
particular subject there that's more serious than the others, like
Panama versus obviously Canada as a joke.

Speaker 4 (02:08):
I think the Panama Canal one really came out of
nowhere earlier this week at a he was speaking at
a conservative conference.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
I think it was in Wisconsin.

Speaker 4 (02:17):
He just decided to talk about the Panama Canal, and
I remember some reporting afterwards, and some of the US
banks reporters that follow Donald Trump Brown had never heard.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Him talk about this before.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
So he's got this idea now that after the US
gave ownership to Panama of the Panama Canal in nineteen
ninety nine, that American ships have been ripped off and
the fees are too high. So he's going to take
it back. I'm not sure if he's going to have
much success doing that, but that's what he sees. His
intention is before he takes office.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
And there's been an airport shooting on Christmas night.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Yeah, this is a bit of a shocker in Phoenix.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
Police say the shooting happened at quarter to ten on
Christmas night outside the security checkpoints at Sky Harbor Airport
in Phoenix. Now, according to reporting, one woman and two
men were shot. The women's injuries described as life threatening.
The men are expected to say but there was another
man as well who was stabbed and he's in a
stable condition.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
Now.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
Police say this was a family dispute that escalated and
there had already been a physical fight before the gun
came out now. A short time later, a man and
a girl were detained by police. And the story doesn't
end there because it's reported that someone else turned up
to the airport with a gun a couple of hours
later because they heard there was an incident and they

(03:34):
ended up getting into an.

Speaker 3 (03:35):
Altercation with police and were arrested.

Speaker 4 (03:37):
So plenty of drama last night at the Sky Harbor
Airport in Arizona.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
And twenty big cats dead at a US sanctuary with
the blurd sorry should I say bird flu?

Speaker 4 (03:49):
Yeah, this is a bit of a concern because this
is spreading among cattle and poultry at the moment. There's
been one occasion as well of it severely infecting at
least one human who has to be in hospital. But
it's been revealed twenty big cats have died of bird
flu over the past several weeks in this animal sanctuary
in Washington State in the west of the country.

Speaker 3 (04:09):
Now.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
The sanctuary is called the Wild Feelid Advocacy Center of Washington.
It says it's lost five African servile cats, four bobcats,
two Canadian links, and a Bengal tiger, among others. Only
seventeen cats remain at the center now. And it says
the situation has deeply affected its team and they are
all grieving now. The Centers for Disease Control essentially America's

(04:33):
Ministry of Health, So there is not You shouldn't be
too much concerned at the moment when it comes to
human to human transmission of bird flu because they're not
seeing anything that will suggest that's going to get out
of control at the stage. But still a devastating time
for this zoo in Washington.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, quite shocking news. Hey, how was your Christmas?

Speaker 4 (04:53):
Much?

Speaker 2 (04:53):
You have a good one?

Speaker 3 (04:54):
It was good, It was good.

Speaker 4 (04:55):
We spent I found out what a lot of people
seem to do here in New York is they have
Chinese for Christmas. Now this was foreign to me, but
I had Chinese. And then I came home and I
was up very late watching that Boxing tag test that
you were speaking to Murray about.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
How incredible is that? My god?

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Amazing? We could talk about that again. I'm talking about Christmas.
So what were you saying about the Christmas How? I
got distracted with the Boxing day test earlier?

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Yees. So I found out what a lot of people do.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
Here is a large Jewish population in the US, and
I think what a lot of Jewish people seem to
do here on Christmas is go for Chinese, like a
Chinese lunch, and a lot of people that don't have
family join in as well.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
So we went to a place.

Speaker 4 (05:40):
In Chinatown here in Manhattan with a group of Kiwis
and Aussies and sat and had a Chinese lunch for Christmas,
which was fantastic, and then went to a British pub afterwards.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
So it wasn't very an American experience. It was more
a Chinese than a British one.

Speaker 4 (05:54):
But nonetheless it was a good time and we finished
off the day with some cricket.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
Of course, it's very cold here at the moment.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
I think it's about one degree is hovering on zero
at the moment, so we're trying to stay in as
much as we can.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
So I'm still fixated on this, on this Chinese meal
for Christmas, What did you actually have?

Speaker 4 (06:10):
Yeah, look, I don't actually know what half the stuff
they were bringing out, but it tasted quite good. I
mean we had some pork buns that sort of stuff,
some beef roll, some fish, some prawns, and some slippery thing.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
It was some prawns.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
Oh well, prawns close close, you know.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
Yeah, Dawn.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
It was a lot cheaper than a normal Christmas. The
whole thing was about seven of us. It was about
thirty dollars each to have Chinese on Christmas, which is
a lot cheaper than doing the whole you know, the
ham and the lamb and all the vegies and all
that sort of thing. So I'm not ruling it out
returning next year if I'm not in New Zealand for Christmas.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
What a great idea. Hey, mch thanks very much for
your time, mate, really appreciate it. That's much Macana, a
US correspondent.
