Cameron George: Warriors CEO on Tohu Harris retirement

The Warriors have been dealt a crucial blow before the season has even started. 

33 year old captain Tohu Harris has been forced into an early retirement due to a wrist injury.

Now, the Warriors have been dealt a big blow before
the season's even started. Captain Tohu Harris has gone. The
thirty three year old forced into early retirement due to
a niglie wrist injury between the Storm Warriors and Kiwi's
the second row and notched up more than two hundred
and fifty first class games in an eleven year career,
and Warriors CEO Cameron George joins me. Now, Cameron, good morning.

Good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Did you see this coming?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
I'll look at before Christmas? I know the risk wasn't
probably healing or feeling the best it could for him
throughout the preseason. But book he had a good break
and had to think about things and spoke to last
Thursday night and that's where it really started to sink
in that this might be the best option. So we

(01:06):
looked at that, talk through it and whilst it was
a surprise he landed there, it also you know, on
a reflection, I could see it coming.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
How did the news go down with the team yesterday?

Speaker 3 (01:19):
I look, everyone was very respectful as all who. Now,
these decisions aren't made lightly. So every player knows that
you have to be at fitness wise to play the
elite level. And there's you know, one guy that demonstrates
that every week, and that's taur Who. So with that respect,
a lot of the guys were you surprise. But at

(01:41):
the same time they know if tall Who's saying this
and making this decision, it's in the best interest of
him and his family, and they respect that.

Speaker 2 (01:49):
How much of a hold does this leave in the team?

Speaker 3 (01:52):
I looked at taur Who, Harris's was a special player,
special man around the club and a very good leader.
But we have a lot of very good players. We're
very excited about the kids coming through. So it just
provides opportunity, that's all it is. It's very hard to
replace a boat like tall Who, But in any club

(02:13):
and any same know as ire replaceable. You develop players
to come in when they when they need to. So
provide an exciting opportunity for someone and we're looking forward
to that.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Is he going to step away completely or is there
a role for him somewhere in the club.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
I was talking with him last night and I just said,
I have a few days away. We haven't even talked
about that because it happened so quick. You make the
decision first, and then you start to look at what
life looks like after that. So I'll sit down with
him and Nat, his wife, and now we'll have a
look at it. But Tour who's always welcome at the club,
and it just depends what he wants to do. That's
