Chris Cahill: Police Association President on Lyn Fleming's funeral, the public support

Police officer Lyn Fleming's life will be remembered at a full police funeral today in Nelson.  

She died after she was run over while carrying out patrols in the city on New Year's Day.  

The funeral will be held at the Trafalgar Centre and livestreamed on the Police website and Facebook page.  

Police Association President Chris Cahill says there are unique features to a police funeral, including the police flag draped over the coffin, the police guard, and the performance of a haka. 

He told Tim Beveridge that the public support from across New Zealand have been felt both in Nelson, but also in stations across the country. 

Cahill says the support is always welcomed, even if it's come from incredibly tragic circumstances.

Yes and Senior Sergeant Lynn Fleming's funeral will be held
later today with full police honors. The Prime Minister, Commissioner
of Police, local mayors will all pay respects to the
officer who is killed in the line of duty on
New Year's Night. Chris Carhill as Police Association President and
of course he will be there as well. Chris, good morning,
Good morning to full police honors. What does that look like.

Well, you have a flag on the coffer and you
will have a what's called flag folding ceremony with that
flag at the end is presented to the family. You
have a guard of honor, will be a Harker performed
and just also that presents the full career of Lynn
will be presented and outlaid at the service. So those

sorts of things are done.

What have you made about their reaction? We've seen right
around the country.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
It's been a wonderful from public of New Zealand. The
mess of support right across New Zealand have been out
here and now soon but also in stations across the
country and yesterday's moments of silence was joined in by
many members of the public. So that's always good when
you feel that, even though it's incredibly tragic circumstances.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
What is your job involved on the back of this
and what have you had to focus on in the
last couple of weeks following Lynde's death.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
It's really for us. It's the welfare of the staff
in Nelson and it's not just the ones that are
working on the night, it's the wider group. Learn was
very well known. She's been here a long time and
she's touched many parts of policing and NOWS and so
it's just the support around that and the ongoing support
both psychological but also just you know, making sure that

people are able to get back to work when they
need the reintegration to start, or working on the night,
all those sorts of things.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
It's policing in New Zealand more dangerous than it used to.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Be to a degree. Yes, I mean what happened to
very hard to prepare for and very hard to prevent.
But in general there's more assaults against offers, the officers
and every firearms is in a greater risk. But there's
always an element of risk in policing and it's very
difficult to limit some of those risks.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Well, Chris I on almost wishes for the service this afternoon,
