Speaker 2 (00:16):
Amaze of Mine has given up drinking except for a
New Year, when it's fair to say he enjoys the
prosecco and ends up with a hangover. And I think
there'll be a number of people where they're having their
annual hangover today. You want, of course to celebrate the
new year appropriately, but of course you don't want the
first day of the year to be complete right off.
So if you're feeling a bit written off right now,
(00:38):
what should you be doing? Lanny Wong is joining me now.
She's a pharmacist on the National Executive at the Pharmaceutical Society. Lanny,
good morning to you.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Good morning.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Have you got a hangover?
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Oh? Not always, Shelly, I'm feeling great this morning.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
What actually is a hangover?
Speaker 1 (00:56):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Yeah, well, a hangover is actually, you know, when you
drink alcohol, alcohol breaks down into something called a seated
out of high and that is like a byproduct like
rubbish that you're livers trying to clear out. So a
hangar is basically a set of auter hyde that you
can feel in your body. So it means your livers overwhelmed.
(01:17):
So yeah, and alcohol causes dehydration, you know, it causes
poor sleep, inflammation, and that's basically your body yet suffering
from their feat of this rubbish called aceto alde hyde.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
So having punished your liver and you've woken up going,
what do you do? What should you do?
Speaker 3 (01:34):
The boring stuff works basically, you know, rehydration, that's how
that's that's the best cure for a hangover is to
try and drink more water, to drink more electrolyte, to
get a bit of rent, and to eat a little
bit of food because alcohol do drop the blood sugar.
So that's why you can't think straight. And you know
you feel very, very tired. So you know, small amount
(01:55):
of food, not not you know, not a big mac
or you know, a couple of pies, something something, something gentle.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
I'm sorry, I've always relied on a big, greasy breakfast.
I mean sausages, sausages, eggs and chips is perfect.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Yeah, no, it is the right part because it contains
you know, carps and protein, which is what you need.
But you know, I guess it's quite heavy on the stomach.
So if you're feeling a bit nauseous that potentially would
have very dire consequences.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Yeah, okay, yeah, I just I felt nauseous and sympathy
just then, just very briefly. Now, obviously this is still
drinking season for those people who still drink. So how
should you prepare for drinking and how should you drink?
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, so you know, you need to paste yourself. So
you know, the boring stuff work. You know, eat when
you're drinking always, you know, make sure you you know,
have a drink and also drink some water lopes. Just
drinks drink that is an alcohol that rehydrate you, not
so much coffee because coffee doesn't something else that dehydrate
you acts like a diarrretic just like alcohol, so it
acticks me, is blurily out of your body. But yeah,
(03:02):
so the boring stuff works. Yeah, it's you know, unfortunately,
it's not the magical cure. It's not magic pill that's
going to cure a hangover. And you know, and just
be kind to yourself and be a bit you know
s gintle with with them out you're putting through your liver.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Absolutely, Lannie, thank you so very very much. Gosh, there
is some pills around the place. There's hangover gummy bears,
and there's all sorts of snake oil products around the place.
But it's quite quite right. A drink of wine, a
drink of water, A drink of wine, a drink of water,
a sausage roll, and just stop
