A Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Bondi terrorist attacks is beginning, examining antisemitism and social cohesion.

Gunmen killed 15 people at a Jewish event at the popular Sydney beach last month.

Australia's Prime Minister has asked former High Court justice Virginia Bell to lead the Commonwealth Inquiry, with a report expected back by year's end.

Australia Correspondent Murray Olds told Andrew Dickens the report will give recommendations regarding law enforcement, border control, immigration, and, very importantly, security and intelligence agencies.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks be follow
this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Murray, good morning to you, Good morning to you, mate.
You're on the phone at the magic wires and there
we go. All right, now, Murray, here's the thing. We've
been talking about this for a little while now, and
finally a Royal inquiry into the Bondai shooting is on
the way.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Air Royal commission twenty five days after the dreadful events
at Bondai Beach. And you know, make no mistake, Anthony
Albonicia didn't want this. He's been dragged, kicking and screaming
towards it and now he's arrived at it. And he's
picked an eminent person, a former High Court judge, virginny
A Bell her name. And it seems at this point

(00:51):
most organizations have been clamoring for a royal commission. Satisfied
you've got you know, primary the Jewish organizations in Australia
are saying, well, bloody well, it's about time because there's
no doubt since October the seventh antisemitism in Australia it's

(01:11):
always been there. As many people have said, anti Semitism
has been a factive life for Jewish people anywhere they
go for centuries. It's not like a new thing. It's
popped up. But since October the seventh, the temperature here
is really amped up. You've had five bomb attacks on synagogue'es,
You've had graffiti attacks everywhere, and it's just been festering

(01:34):
away and it culminated in that shocking event at Vondai
Beach twenty five days ago. So Virginia Bell will investigate
anti Semitism, how extensive it is, what was driving it
in Australia. She'll recommend on ways to help law enforcement,
border control and immigration, and very importantly our security and
intelligence agencies because big fail there. I would suggest specifically

(01:58):
examining Bondai Beach and then she'll make other recommendations that
can help strengthen social cohesion, cohesion and counter religious extremism here.
Business leaders like it, Universities like you know, there are
universities here in Australia where Jewish students can't just go
into a library and study. They happy to have a

(02:18):
secure area to go and study. You'd imagine that slody terrible.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
And now the big thing about Royal commissions is always
the terms of reference, because you can actually jimmy them
if you actually get your terms of reference a little
bit fudgy, and everyone's happy with the terms of reference at.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
This point, there's bound to be. I mean, the Opposition
was whining late yesterday about it that like this, you
just get out of the way. There's no role for
you to play. If it's all you want to do
is throw hand grenades. This is about trying to get
some sort of answers to a problem with fractured Australian society.
It's just awful. It's horrible. What happened to Bondai Beach

(02:55):
was beyond the wildest imaginings of just about every single
Lossie I can hand on heart. No one thought it
would happen here. We thought we were immune from the
stuff that happens in other parts of the world. And
we've got a very, very rude awakening. The Jewish community
has been warning that the temperature was creeping up. It

(03:15):
wasn't a new thing. But you know, Anthony Alberisi, he's
a politician at the height of a rhinoceros. He said,
we haven't just been working on this overnight, you know.
But he's taken. A lot of political skin has been
scraped off Anthony Albanesi over this. Virginia Bell must report
back by December this year, twenty twenty six, and the

(03:36):
inquiry that was already set up involving Dennis Richardson, the
former ambassador to the United States, a former boss of Asia,
the domestic security agency that will be folded into the
Bell Royal Commission. So look, we're on the way. We're
getting there. It hasn't been ideal for Albanesi and the
Labor government, but it's on the way.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Okay. Tell me about your weather, because it's very, very hot,
and they're saying catastrophic conditions and it could be the
worst since the Black Summer of twenty nineteen, twenty twenty.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
Yeah, that's what I've been saying for a few days now.
I mean yesterday, I played golf yesterday in forty two
degree heat. It was dreadful, horrible, but in fact I've
got four pars, so I was reasonably happy. But look,
mid forties in southern New South Wales today, total firebands
across much of the state. Forty three in Penrith yesterday,

(04:27):
and you know the bush fires have already broken out
was a significant fire down near the Victorian border. There's
an extreme fire Danes were expected Saturday in Sydney, in Canberra,
in the Illawarra, which is the southern you know, the
south of Sydney down into the Blue Mountains and total

(04:47):
firebands expected to be announced this afternoon for all of
those areas. I can't tell you how popular the beaches,
the rivers, the waterways have been and the ambulance that
has been so so busy, you know, picking up people
who were keeled over, and there's a big warning out
as well, basically say if you got elderly day, it
was just gonna tap on their door and say the OK,

(05:09):
how you're going, how you feeling. We'd love a drink
of water, just to keep an eye on on on,
you know, other people who may be doing it really
really tough.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
You know what really gives you the hebgb's though, is
that you've actually had quite a weak year. And so
the problem with wet year is the plants grow. And
then when plants grow and then they die and then
they fall down to the ground, then they dry out
and then you've got a whole lot of stuff there
that's just waiting to ignite the forests and the buildings
and the people.

Speaker 3 (05:32):
You know, the Rule of five Service was just making
the point this week that it's not like twenty nineteen
twenty where there was so much fuel around. It hasn't
been you know, the conditions happened in that wet to
create that level of fuel that was on the ground
of black after the Black Summer. It was that was

(05:52):
that was hell on wheels. I remember writing the same
story day after day after day after day after day.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
Well here here in New Zealand made our skies turned
orange and we looked up and went, gee, what's happening
in Australia, And you know, it's quite quite a bit
of sea between you and I. Hey Murray, Enjoykend
