Speaker 1 (00:00):
The great actor who plays Daredevil himself. Charlie Cox joins
the show this morning. How's it going, Charlie, I'm being good,
thank you? So yes, I'm fantastic now. Charlie, first of all,
I got to say happy birthday. I know you got
a birthday coming up in a couple of days, right,
Oh my god, that's right.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
You know what I actually forgot about that?
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Oh see, I was gonna see if you had any
big plans.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
No, big plans, be with my fam.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Okay, it's nothing special for the big day, all right.
Is it tough having a birthday close to Christmas?
Speaker 2 (00:36):
I think it's great. I've always loved it. It feels
like everyone's the whole world is starting to get ready
to celebrate your birthday. You know.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
I know a lot of people feel like they get
short changed because sometimes you get those combo gifts and
you're like, wait a minute, No, my birthday is separate
from Christmas.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
No. I think people have over compensate because they feel
like they worry that's gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
Oh that's extra, that's good.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Like it?
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Well, Charlie. First of all, you know when whenever I
see you in an interview or whatever, and I hear
you talk. It always catches me off guard because yeah,
because you you know, most of your acting has been
you know, with an American accent, and people don't, I think,
realize that you're you're not American. You know, it always
catches me off guard.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Well, actually, as of last year, I am American.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Well yes, yes, there you go.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Big pots, I know what you mean.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Do People always kind of get shocked when you first
speak to them, are like, oh, you're you're you're an Englishman.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
I do get that. A lot of people didn't. People
didn't realize that I was not American.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
It just shows what a great actor you are. Wow,
how long did you have to kind of study the
accent to kind of nail it down? You know?
Speaker 2 (01:47):
So that's the great irony about it is that I
find accents really hard. So I work my bustle, Oh wow,
to get the accents as opposed to the perfect as
they as I can. Do. You like, oh yeah, Like
there's some accents I in the month leading up to
a job, by just talking it the whole time, don't
(02:09):
come out of it.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
That's kind of smart because it's got to be tough. Yeah,
I can't even imagine. Have you ever been on set
and you're, you know, doing an American accent and then
you accidentally just lose it and start talking and you
don't realize it.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Oh yeah, yeah all the time. Yeah. I tried to
stay an accent when I'm on set, just to kind
of just to keep it going and keep it sounding
feeling normal and all those kind of things. But then
often off, you know, you start telling talking to your
co stars and telling a joke or telling a story,
and the next thing you know, you've completely lost it.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
That's crazy, Charlie. Before I get to talk to you
about Daredevil, I want to talk to you about your
new project MERV because this is great and I know
you know a lot of people, first of all, love dogs,
and this toy is kind of centers around a dog, right, just.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
The dog who's tremendous. Yeah, it's it's a dog Collar
Day Christmas movie.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
He doesn't get better than that. Tell me a little
bit about the story, right, So the.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Story is Russ and Anna are recently separated. They've they've
broken up. They are navigating the very tricky waters of
co parenting a dog love. Yeah, which is actually it
turns out much more common than I realized. Oh yeah,
they've had this experience. Yeah. So the dog is depressed.
(03:30):
He's become very sad because of the breakup. So I
take my character takes him to a special dog beach
in Florida. Anna played by Zoe gets so she crashes
the party hilarity in twos, with a lot of silliness
and and a little bit of maybe rekindling romance.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
And just to be clear, the dog doesn't die right
because I can't this.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Is a question. I can't believe how many people have
off that that's true.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
I'm sorry, Charlie, but I have to ask because as
soon as I see a dog in a movie.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
I cry.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Obviously, there are a lot of dog movies that I
don't know about. I don't think it's too much of
a spoiler to say the dog surmich.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
I love this movie. Okay, that's fantastic. So it is
on Prime Amazon Prime Video. You could check it out.
It got released yesterday, so it is streaming now. It
sounds great, Charlie. I'm really excited to check it out. Man.
So I gotta talk to you about Dared Devil because
I'm a massive fan. I'm a big nerd, So I've
been watching, you know, since day one and all that stuff.
(04:44):
How did you feel the transition from Netflix over to
Disney Plus kind of went. I thought that the latest
season was fantastic, didn't miss a beat.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Yeah, so it was a little rockie at first. We
tried they we tried to go in a slightly different direction,
which actually was a really interesting idea, an admirable effort.
It didn't quite work, but no real fault of anyone's
in particular, just wasn't quite right tonally. And I think,
(05:15):
you know, when we had the actors strike and the
writer strike, the producers had an opportunity to look at
what we'd shot, which I think was about six episodes.
They were able to see that we were maybe not
quite on track, and we then ended up pivoting and
going kind of slight back towards what we had kind
of established on Netflix. And to that end, you know,
(05:39):
huge credit to Disney and to Marvel in particular, for
you know, not only having the guts to try something
slightly knew, but also recognizing when it wasn't working and
being and being willing to you know, make it kind
of a u turn, and which comes with a huge
amount of stress and money and all those kind of things.
(06:00):
An absolute dream from my perspective, working you know with
Disney and Marvel, and you know, we have a season
two coming out in March. We're going to start shooting
season three round time, so a lot of a lot
of Daredevil to come.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Were you a fan of comics or anything like that
before the role?
Speaker 2 (06:18):
I was not, But then I've ever read a comic
book in my life.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Oh wow.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
When they asked me to audition for Daredevil, first I
thought it was I thought it was like evil can
eevil kind of stuff like. I didn't really.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
And also in my first audition, I neglected to play
the character as blind because I didn't know that they had. Yeah,
when they recalled me they had. They said, you know,
we'd like to see him again book. Can he can
he acknowledge the fact that the character his mind?
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Wow, that that does help? That is part of that
is part of the role for sure.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Yeah, Charlie, Uh, you said you didn't know the characters blind,
But did you know that the Ben Affleck movie that
came out in earrow two thousands like bombed terribly? And
when you found that out, did you feel like, oh,
this is kind of a risk because people associate Daredevil
with that bad movie before this series.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
So important to say for the record, I'm a huge
Benefleck fan.
Speaker 1 (07:18):
Yes, of course.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
I will watch anything that that man. I think it's great.
I don't. Yes, I think it's not a secret that
that movie didn't perform brillantly. But actually, the way I
looked at it was like kind of slightly the opposite.
I had a friend of mine when he found out
I got the role as Daredevil. He caught me up
and he said, is it true You're going to be
in the new show? And I said yes, and he said,
(07:42):
well the bar is love.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
Good point. True. Well, Charlie, I love the show. It's fantastic.
I can't wait to see merv happy the dog is okay.
I just added it to my Prime watching There you
go check it out. It is on Prime Video. It
is streaming now. Great. Catch it up with you in
a good time, can you, Charlie.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
Thank you guys. I appreciate it absolutely.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
There you go. Charlie Cox Daredevil himself so nice. Yes,
nice guy. I did not know he was English and
it came on. I was like, whoa, I know it
is it is such a trip when you hear that.
Definitely
