Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, Uh, I am right in the middle of our
fall ball season in Little League, and I had a
moment with one of my players yesterday that was reminiscent
of a movie. Scene got very intense. It was very
serious when I tell you the movie and the scene,
though it may actually be a little disturbing.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
We ain't done yet.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
It's time for the podcast, completely uncensored and uncting filtered
except for that part.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
The The show's after show starts now. So let me
explain to you Sky what fall ball isa. I know
you don't know the difference in the season exactly.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
I hear you talk about two different seasons. I don't
know which is which and what means was so this
season it happens in thought.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
I don't know, but.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
I don't know, Like it sounds like the two seasons
are kind of different animals, but I don't know why
or which ones.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
Which spring is real baseball. That's the ones that count,
That's the ones that it's very serious. Uh, you know,
you win championships, that kind of a thing. Eventually you
go to All Stars all that stuff. Fullball is just
a season to prepare you for spring. So it's like
an extra It doesn't really count. There's nothing to it.

(01:24):
There's no winners or losers, there's no you know, all stars,
there's no championship. It's just it's just to play to
get you more ready for this upcoming season.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Okay, I just came up with an analogy in my
head to remember it, which I just realized is going
to fuck me up even more well because I'm like, oh,
it's like spring training. No, it's no, definitely, but you
said they're they're training games to get ready and it
doesn't count, and it doesn't count.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
Spring trainings right before the season started.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Okay, Okay, I wont thank spring trainings. It's just less
serious baseball. It's just fun baseball. Don't want to win,
but it's just but it's also not too much fun
at understanding is the serious one.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Yes, okay, yeah, So fall ball right now is is
whatever you know. And the difference also is you don't
pick your team in our league for fall ball like
in spring, there's a draft. You select your team that
whole thing in spring. In spring, yes, yes, there's evaluations,

(02:29):
you go, you evaluate, you get exactly in fallball. Anybody
can play fall ball and you just sort of get
a signed a team. So I just get the players
and it is what it is. I don't get really
to pick anybody, and so whatever team I get is
the team I get. No big deal. It's you know, again,
I just my whole goal is just to try to
get them better, you know, and keep you know, elevating

(02:51):
their skills until spring. So no big deal. So it's again,
it's not that serious. I don't get too crazy when
it comes to fall ball.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yes, do other coaches get crazy and fallball?

Speaker 1 (03:04):
Do you know?

Speaker 2 (03:04):
There's always that guy who takes it too serious.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
They're this group of managers. I would say no, but
they they still are trying to win, you know. So uh,
for me, I'm the only guy in the entire league
that is basically changing pitchers out every inning because I'm
trying to get kids to become good at pitching and

(03:29):
you know, elevate their skills and so yeah, so literally
out of thirteen kids on my team, I think eleven,
I've pitched eleven of them, really, which is crazy because
I mean, some of them, you know, not great.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
I feel like Thor would still try and win in
fall ball.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Of course you always want to win, so do I.
But also like so in fall ball, you're only allowed
to throw two innings. A pitcher can only throw two innings.
And every team I've played, it's like they throw two
innings to ins two innings, whereas me, I'm I'm changing
picture every single inning. And so it's it's different, and

(04:06):
and I don't really care that much. That being said,
we just want a fifth in a row. Somebody, somebody,
do somebody to do a summer Well, once you get
the kids to buy into the message.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Up, so the four happens in full ball too.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Absolutely, it's it's it doesn't happen in just baseball. This
guy happens in life. I've had multiple CEOs reach out
to me and say, what are what's the four? I'm
about to have a big staff meeting and I want
to preach the four. What CEOs, oh, massive CEOs of
massively fortune fortune five hundred. They want to They want
to bring me in to their staff meetings, and I say,

(04:44):
I'm too busy. I'll just tell you what the four is.
I'm busy with full ball right now, so I can't.
I can't go to Microsoft right now and preach the four,
all right, So you just you got to You got
to talk to your own staff, not the four. So
you got to have the right attitude. It starts without it.
If you don't have the right attitude in life, I
don't know. It doesn't matter to me. If this is baseball, whatever.

(05:06):
If you don't have that good attitude, I don't want to.
I can't work with you. I don't want it. I
don't want it, don't do it. Gotta have the right attitude, okay,
And that means you gotta be coachable. You got to
come to the field ready to play. You gotta be
ready to all these things. Okay, good attitude. Give me
a bad attitude. Yeah, we're done. I'm done with you. Okay,
So give me a good attitude. You gotta have energy.

(05:29):
Don't come in here love laygagging over here, love lay gag.
I don't want it. If I if I gotta tell you, hey,
gotta hustle. We're not. We're not walking in and out.
We're not we hustle.

Speaker 4 (05:43):
What if for slouch your hands on these?

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Come on, let's go. The gotta gotta bring the energy, okay.
Sitting around play fucking video games all day long, dicking around.
They show up at the field and you're just fucking no,
that's not happening. Bring then you gotta bring focus. Gotta
have focus out there. What happens if you're unfocused baseball?

(06:08):
What happens Baseball gods, they're gonna find you. They're gonna
find the ball will find you.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
Can't hide in baseball.

Speaker 1 (06:13):
That's it. The minute you're not paying attention, the ball
is gonna find you. I'm telling you, it happens every time.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
I'll just play right field, coach.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
And then look at picking up fucking flowers. I'm chasing,
chasing butterflies, and the next thing you know, crack ball
gets hit right here. Every time, Emily knows I would
have given anything. I would have given anything to shape

(06:44):
up read. I tell you right now, I wish I
would have been his coach. I wish you would have
This kid would have been a fucking stud.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Never got a chance.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
I would have worked.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Wonders shut up.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Okay, So we have attitude, we have energy, we have
becust effort. Gotta have effort. Listen, you can make any
mistake you want on my team. Okay, if you give
me good effort. Though, If you try to catch the baseball,
if you're trying your hardest, I ain't gonna get mad
at you. You're You're not gonna have a peep out

(07:17):
of me. I'm gonna say, great job, good try keep going,
keep going. Next time that ball is yours. Okay, and
eventually you're gonna fix whatever mistake you made and you're
gonna make that catch whatever.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
Giants just keep doing.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
Should I get in there?

Speaker 4 (07:31):
I think you need to who's.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
Giants? Idiots? Okay? No? No, this is really is bad work.
I'm working with children.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
No, coach, don't mean to question you, but is energy
and effort a bit redundant? No? You are two separate things.

Speaker 1 (07:56):
Are you? Are you a district coach of the years guy?
Because I don't think you say she's a part of
my Yeah, energy and.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
Effort, they're completely, They're completely.

Speaker 4 (08:06):
You can have energy and be clapping, but they go
on the field and then not.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Have a good effort.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
You know, you're like energy out there that you're not
going for the ball. I'm sorry, coach, didn't mean, didn't.

Speaker 1 (08:20):
You know what that is? I wish you. I wish
you would honestly, uh so the kids. It took a minute,
but once you buy in, yeah, then you're gonna start
to get some ws okay, and we won five in
a row. We're dominating. Honestly, it's been great and and
all the kids are that you're they're showing progress and

(08:41):
that's all that really matters. And so it's been fantastic. Well,
I got one kid who is lacking the very number
one and he uh again, I don't pick the teams
and whatever. So he showed up and first practic I
see him and I'm like, oh, this kid's a good

(09:01):
baseball player. He's got he's got some skills, so this
is gonna be a good kid. And then next thing,
you know, about two games in maybe three, I forget,
his mom reached out and said he doesn't want to
play baseball.

Speaker 4 (09:14):
Anymore, hates it, hates it.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
And I immediately take it, like, what the fuck did
I do in two games? Yes? Crazy, and so I'm like,
what the fuck? In fact, I was really confused because
I remember praising this kid because he's good baseball player.
So I remember praising him. I don't remember ever having
an issue. Nothing I've seen was bad. So I'm like,

(09:37):
because immediately I think it's me, you know, like it's well, yeah,
you know, I mean, like if he's not liking baseball.
I'm his coach. I don't know, that's my question, Like,
what's going on? And she immediately tells me it's definitely
not you. He likes you as a coach. Everything's going well.
He just hates baseball now, And I'm like, why, Like
what happened? I don't understand.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
He had similar situation I have with golf amazing and
then just had a bad experience.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
No, you were really bad at golf. He's not bad
at baseball. So I don't know. I mean you through
your club, yes, across Mexico.

Speaker 2 (10:14):
You threw it.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
It was crazy. So so it is what it is.
You know. She said, you know, we're gonna try and
make him stick it out through the season, that kind
of thing.

Speaker 4 (10:27):
I'm like, okay, you know that's.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
What That's kind of what I said. But whatever. So
he's been hit and miss as far as even showing
up for practices and games and things like that. Yeah,
it's been tough. And so yesterday I got a message
we're running late. We'll be there, but we're running late together.
So they're like twenty minutes late, and I'm like, jeez,
we're you know, I'm almost done with warm ups. I mean,

(10:51):
we got to get we got to get going here.
And so I immediately walk over to his mom and
I'm like, you know, what's going on? And she's like, yeah,
it's just it's a battle every time. He just hates baseball.
Now it doesn't want to play. And I said, all right, well,
what you know, what is Is there anything I can do?
And she's like no, honestly, like there's it's not about you,
It's it's all him. She goes, I feel terrible because

(11:12):
I don't want him to affect the team.

Speaker 4 (11:14):
She's like, I wish he wasn't my son.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
I go, I don't know. I go, I don't know.
Let me have a talk with him and I'll see
what's up. So the only moment I'm really one on
one with them is when i'm running the tea. You know,
we run the tea, you know, when they're hitting into
the net. We do a little tea work before as
we're warming up, and then you know, that's it. And
so I'm one on one with you at that point.

(11:38):
And so he's over at the tea and I go, hey, man,
what's up, what's going on? What's the what's the deal here?
I go, what is it? What you know? He goes,
I don't know. I just don't like baseball anymore. I go, okay,
I go, I go, what is it about baseball that
you don't like? He goes, I don't know. It's just
not fun. I go, all right, not fun? I go, well,

(11:59):
is there anything I can do to make it more
fun for you?

Speaker 2 (12:01):
Like?

Speaker 1 (12:01):
What is it? And goes No, it's not you. He goes,
I just don't like playing baseball anymore.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
It's on Sundays. I want to watch football.

Speaker 1 (12:07):
Maybe, And I go, well, is there a different position
you want to play? Like? Tell me, like, like, let's
let's get through this, you know. I go, there's only
what four or five games left? I go, can we
stick it out? You know? I'd like you to still
be on the team. And he goes, yeah, I don't know.
Maybe not kidding. That's exactly how he was talking. And

(12:31):
so I'm just like, I'm not really sure where to
go now, and I go, I got I got to
reach this kid. I see.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
I wouldn't care, Okay, I'm worried about here.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
When your son becomes of age and you start coaching.

Speaker 4 (12:46):
Like if this kid doesn't like it, whatever.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
Honestly, it's not my kid. I have an internal battle
because it is fall ball of not. I try to
not care, but I'm in it.

Speaker 4 (12:59):
I have to, can't. But you gave it effort.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
No, he's not giving you anything, all right, it.

Speaker 1 (13:11):
I can't. I can't do it.

Speaker 2 (13:12):
I can't do it.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
And so I finally I just I stopped the tea
and I look at him and I go, hey, man,
you're a good baseball player. And he goes, oh, thanks,
And go, hey, look at me, you're a good baseball player.
He goes, okay, thanks, Hey, third time, I'm serious, you're

(13:36):
a good baseball player. And he stopped and he looked
at me and he went really And I go, yeah, man,
you're a good baseball player. I want you to believe that.
And he and he like kind of welled up. Actually good, Yeah,
he's pretty good. He's on the younger side, but he mean,
he's got more skills at that age than a lot

(13:57):
of them. And so he starts to get emotional. Oh
my god, and I'm thinking to myself, this is very
reminiscent of Robin Williams and Matt Damon in Goodwill Hunting.
I don't know it was very similar, very really similar. Hey, man,

(14:18):
it's not your fault. Yeah, you know, I know. That's great.
Hey it's not your fault. No, I know, I know.
Hey it's not your fault. Oh wow, do we have
a breakthrough. We have a break all.

Speaker 4 (14:32):
Well know, if he doesn't show up for practice or
he's late again.

Speaker 1 (14:35):
You're right then I didn't really break it. But but
if this kid all of a sudden becomes a major
league baseball player, next show, do we target this moment
in this kid? Wow, I got through.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
So he's getting an MVP award for playing for the
Dodgers or the Padres and he says, he goes it
all changed for me When I was thirteen, almost coach
Coach Eddie told me I was a good baseball player.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
It was for you of your future.

Speaker 4 (15:00):
But he holds up the four up, the four you
gotta hold up for everyone was like, why is he
like the four horsemen?

Speaker 1 (15:05):
So no, no, no, You've got to really pay attention.
It was it was intent, It was intense special for you.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
So child's psychologist is the next career? Is that where
we're going? Like Robin Williams, I think, So, I don't
know
