Speaker 1 (00:00):
As I often say, when I have a chance to
talk with my friend in KOA colleague, Ryan Edwards, who
co hosts KOA Sports from three pm to six pm. Here,
Ryan has forgotten more about football than I will ever know,
so when I need to know stuff, he's usually my
first go to. And yesterday was the NFL deadline for
teams to get their rosters down to fifty three from

(00:23):
one hundred and whatever it was, and so I thought
it'd be fun to talk with Ryan about the most
interesting moves that the Broncos that the Broncos made to
get down to fifty three.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
So, hey, Ryan, thanks for thanks for joining us.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
It's ninety but the hundred, So that's pretty funny. And
sometimes it does feel like that when you're out there
watching practice.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
I'm gonna say two hundred.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah, you know, two thousand players now, I mean, but
it's a lot. I mean, you think about thirty two
teams cutting thirty seven.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Players, yeah, in one day, in one day.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Basically, I mean they kind of span it out over
couple but I mean yesterday, I mean you saw it
was just it was madness. So yeah, it does feel
like I mean, it ends up being you know, several
hundred thousand, you know, but to one thousand, but then yeah,
it's a lot.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Anyway, it's good to be here, man, Thanks you so.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
One quick thing before we get into the Broncos nuts
and bolts, so to me, you know, you think about
what you said, like more than a thousand players being
cut yesterday across the NFL, probably closer to twelve hundred
and and a lot of these guys, well, you know,
let's say they were in a preseason game actually in

(01:35):
a way, whether they played or not, but they're in uniform,
they're on the sideline, they're kind of in the game.
Some of these guys will never be in a professional
football game again.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
That's correct.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yeah, that's the sobering reality. I mean, certainly the one
side where you're talking about completing your roster, getting the
fifty three today or getting the practice squad together and
you're forming what will eventually be your sixteen I man
team could be seventy if you have an international player,
but that's what your roster is going to be. You know,
that's excitement, is cool.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
Right, and there are dreams being made there.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
But the other side of that is dreams being crushed
and there are some guys that this was it. You know,
maybe they were a college free agent that signed on
with a team. They kind of got kicked around during
the course of training camp and some preseason games, and
you know, they gave it their all and in the
end it just wasn't enough, And they'll never suit up
in a football uniform again. I mean, some of them

(02:31):
will get a chance to be on a practice squad.
Some will, you know, sign around and bounce around. You
Nick Ferguson, who I hosted with, he bounced around the league.
There's more stories like that than there are of the
star players, right, and so much of the league is
made up of stories of those kinds of guys that
bounce around and just kind of resiliently hung in there

(02:52):
to put themselves in a position to make a roster,
which is the smallest percentage of our society, and it
truly is remark But yeah, there's certainly a sad part
to the day yesterday.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
So we got about maybe five minutes here, so I
don't entirely understand how this whole practice squad thing works.
Can you give me a very brief tutorial?

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yeah? Sure. So you have the players that were waves
which are so you have you have vested vets and
you have basically nonvest events and four years of service.
It makes you a vested vet, which means if you
are released, then you can basically sign with any team
you want to.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Right.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
So the players like Sam Ellinger, for example, he waited
a little bit to see what offers were out there,
but in the end he came back to the Broncos
and signed with the practice squad because he's a vested bet,
he can do that whatever he wants. Players that are
not four years they are subject to waivers, which means
there's a twenty four hour period. So the Broncos had
to get those players off the roster by two o'clock yesterday,

(03:51):
and then teams could submit waiver claims and then we're
just now finding out what those waiver claims were. And
then there the players now can can decide and can
make it onto practice squash from there. So there's there's
just basically two classifications when it comes to what players
can sign and what time.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
If you're a two year player and you get waived,
and then let's say so there's two different possible scenarios.
Let's say just one other team wants you, Do you
have to go to them? Well, I guess you would
because you want to be in the NFL and nobody
and only one team wants you. The other scenario, what
if two different teams want you?

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Okay, so that's a good question. Yeah, So it's it's
basically in order of the draft. So whoever has a
higher priority. So like the Tennessee Titan to the number
one overall pick last year, So if the Tennessee Titans
wanted you, they get you. In fact, it's not like
your snake draft and fantasy where once they claim a
player then then they lose their turn until the next player.

(04:50):
Every player they want they get. They're the number one pick.
So if they put in a clearer wing waiver clayer
for four players, they get all four of those players.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Wow, they're the number one.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
They're the numb one team. So yeah, and if you're
a two year player and you're claimed off waivers, you're
going to that team. There's not a negotiation. And like
you said, if there's two teams, well then that team
with higher priority gets here.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Okay, so that's very interesting. So there's no negotiation all right,
So I think it.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
Would be a bad use of time to talk about
all the people the Broncos cut, because nobody heard of
most of them. I didn't know that Sam Ellinger was
already back on the practice squad. I think I think
cutting him was the last thing the Broncos did yesterday.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
I think it was the last cut.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
But it seemed pretty clear they did want him back
on the practice squad.

Speaker 3 (05:35):
They did, and he had some offers out there to
be on fifty three man rosters. But in the end,
he'll probably spend more time on the active roster for
the Broncos than not because a couple of years ago,
the NFL institute of this thing where you could have
an emergency third quarterback. He doesn't count towards your active
game day roster, so Sam ellen but he has to
be on the fifty three so to do that. So

(05:57):
the Broncos will use their college they get three calleps
for every player, they'll use their call ups. They'll put
them back on the practice squad, and eventually they'll there'll
be an injury or something and they'll just say, all right,
you're going to stay up here on the active roster
because we're not going to do that anymore.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
And we'll give you.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
A game day check, so he gets he'll get in essence,
eighteen game day checks or seventeen game day checks. Anyways,
it just was more of like, Okay, well you could
have been on a fifty three guaranteed spot, I guess,
or he can be here doing what he's doing here,
which is you know, in limbo temporarily, but he'll he'll
eventually get get all the same money.

Speaker 1 (06:29):
We're talking with Ryan Edwards, co host of KOA Sports
three pm to six pm weekdays here on KOA. Got
about ninety seconds left, So I'm gonna throw two names
out at you, and I want you to tell me
your thoughts on these two guys being cut. Audrick Estimay
and wow, what's this? Caleb Loaner, Caleb Loner?

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Oh, Caleb B.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Looner?

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Yeah yeah yeah. So as to may you know, once
you had two running backs to the room, right, they
added JK. Dobbins and R. J. Harvey. H. He almost
immediately put him on the bubble. He was going to
be competing with the three other guys, four other guys
for two spots, so he unfortunately did not make the cut.
It looks like he's going to go somewhere else. He's
not even go in be coming back here in the

(07:11):
practice squad. Caleb Lohner is signing back to the practice squad.
The Broncos seventh round pick, and he was going to
be a bit of a project anyways. I think it
was kind of a long shot for him to make
the roster, but because he was a draft pick, sometimes
those guys get they get preferential treatment. In this case
is a seventh rounder. I think the Broncos felt pretty
confident he'd come back to them, and that's ultimately what happened.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
Yeah, and he's one of these guys who played basketball
in college and just a little bit of football, was
never really thought of as a football player, but the
team sees him as having the tools to maybe become
a good football player.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
Is that about right? Yeah? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (07:45):
Four catches, Yeah, four catches in college.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Four catches in college.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
Four catches. Okay, so that yeah, that tells you everything.
And he's made some strides, but he's a little ways
away from being a guy that can be a regular contributor.
And they felt pretty good about their room otherwise.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
Okay, and then last quick thing, it sounded like you
wanted to talk about tomorrow Mathis cornerback.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
Well, so he is a fourth rounder for the Broncos.
Just a few years ago.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
He was claimed off.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
Waivers today, I think you would have gotten interest otherwise.
He was claimed by Carolina and his former defensive coordinator
at Giro everro is out there with Panthers.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
So that makes some sense.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
He was a guy that, I mean, just a couple
of years ago, he was in the conversation to be
a starter.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
With this team.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
But that's how quick it goes, and he just had
a tough time sort of really going to the next level.
And we see that all the time with players, right
you just say you're a good player, we like you
as a deaf guy. If you have to go in,
we're happy putting you in. But you're never going to
be a starter here. So he gets a chance to
start over somewhere else. But that was a guy that
we kind of wondered if the Broncos, based on the numbers,

(08:48):
if they try to keep him or try to trade him.
But in the end they had to waive him and
he ended up being claimed this morning.

Speaker 1 (08:55):
You can hear Ryan Edwards and Dave Logan and the
whole crew talking talking Broncos and other things from time
to time, but a lot of Broncos as we're heading
into the season now on KOA Sports from three pm
to six pm every weekday, right after Mandy Show. As
I always say, Ryan has forgotten more about football than
I will ever know. I do what I can, but

(09:16):
you know, Ryan, thanks so much for your time. As
always great is always great talking to you.

Speaker 3 (09:21):
I was great talking to you. No Travis Kelsea, Taylor
Swift questions, Oh my gosh.

Speaker 2 (09:25):
Should I have asked you something?

Speaker 1 (09:26):
No, Abrod doesn't I'm I'll just say I'm I'm happy
for him. They seem like they seem like a lovely
couple together. I think they seem like a good fit
from these cheap seats, and I hope they have a long,
happy life together.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Do you want to add anything?

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Perfectly said, I completely agree it. This is amazing. During
the next day, the midst of all the chaos yesterday,
all of a sudden that got dropped it

Speaker 2 (09:50):
Very good, all right, Thanks Ryan,
