Speaker 1 (00:00):
Partly because this is something I wanted to do, and
also partly because lots of listeners actually asked me to
do this. I've got a friend joining me in studio,
not just a friend, but a mentor and a guy
without whom I wouldn't have this job. And you might
have heard of him. His name is Mike Rosen. He
was behind this same microphone for a little while. And
(00:24):
Mike and I agree about most things politically.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
But not everything.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
And Mike and I have a different take on rank
choice voting, which we will talk about in the next
segment of the show, which is the proximal cause of
his being here to talk about that.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
But Mike has lots of.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Views, and many of you asked me to, you know, hey,
bring Mike on so you can talk about some things.
So here he is, and before we talk any politics, Mike,
I believe congratulations are in order. So I would like
to say congratulations in public to you, for you for
you want to tell people while why I'm congratulating you.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Well.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Barb Simmons and I, who were living together for about
ten years, are still living together, but now we're actually married.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
Fabulous. Yeah, I've known her for thirty years.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
We dated thirty years some odd years ago for a
couple of months, then went our own way, took twenty
years off and got back together.
Speaker 2 (01:17):
Two times ago.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
And and by the way, Barbus fabulous. I know we're
reasonably well just from hanging out with you. So congratulations,
thank you, very well done. She's made an honest man
out of you. So let's start with a little bit
of just the presidential politics, and then in the next
segment we'll talk about ranked choice voting.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
But when you heard me.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Talking about Trump, you said you had some thoughts and
maybe a scenario.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Oh people, could you've asked me, is he gonna win?
I don't know the elations Tuesday. And at this stage
it's not even worth the Nichols worth of spit to
speculate it'll be what it'll be. The polls are generally
not trustworthy. There's undersampling and this and that and spinning
and who knows what else, And in from past elections
(02:01):
we've seen they can miss by a ton. Some are
good one year and not good the next year. Anyway,
so I have a Rosie scenario because I wanted to win,
and you know I'm not a trumpeter, right, But Party
pumps Trump's person and it's vital that the Republican Party
and its coalition governed the executive branch of government and
(02:22):
also have a majority in east each House of Congress,
because in Congress, you've got to be the majority party
in each house.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
If you're not, you might as well go home.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Especially these days, the majority party controls every committee chairmanship,
subcommittee chairmanship, rules on and on and on. A piece
of controversial legislation if it flies in the face of
the great political divide, if you're in the minority party,
forget it. It'll never pass the Caravello adds she's running
(02:54):
for re election in the eighth district, which is a
swing district here in Colorado and a possibly winnable district.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
Right, I have the Republican candidate on later today in
the show, Gabe Evans.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
I'll mention something about Gabe. What happened tolike, But there's
a problem with that. In any event, she likes to
run ads saying oh no, she crosses the aisle all
the time and works with Republicans.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
On insequential legislation that isn't ideological or controversial, but if
it's about keeping the border open and a whole left
wing agenda. She's one hundred percent there with the Progressive
Caucus and everybody in that element with those beliefs.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Huh So, how can Trump win? Right?
Speaker 3 (03:42):
And this would defy the polls. And I need to
go back in history very quickly.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Right, We got about two and a half minutes in
this second.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Okay, In nineteen eighty Richard Nixon was running for re
election with Watergate hangover his head.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
The warren Vietnam was still a serious as.
Speaker 1 (03:55):
You said nineteen eighty, it wouldn't be nineteen eighty. No,
nineteen seventy two. Is that what we're talking about.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
No, Nixon, Watergate was in Ronald Reagan was elected in
nineteen eighty. Yes, I'm jumping way too. Nixon was re
elected in nineteen he was He lost to candidate.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
In seventy two, his first election seventy.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
Two elections seventy two, was first elected. War in Vietnam
is going on seventy seventy six. He's running against George McGovern.
George McGovern, a flaming left winger from South Dakota. Anti war,
had the peace movement all over the country, and McGovern
at one point said if I'm president, I'll go on
(04:56):
my hands and knees and beg Ho Chi Minh to
let us out out of the war in Vietnam. And
Nixon said, I have a plan, We'll get out reasonably.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
YadA, YadA.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Yeah, So this is seventy two, because seventy six was
Carter versus Ford. So this is the seventy two election,
So now keep going, okay.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Paul's showed that Nixon would lose.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Vietnam was greatly opposed by the American public.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
YadA, YadA.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Watergate was hanging over his head, and he won with
forty nine states, a complete landslide. The explanation was the
silent majority has now spoken. The anti war crowd, the demonstrations,
everything else got all the publicity, but the vast majority
(05:42):
of Americans didn't go along with them. Bill Clinton got
his way out of the draft, and White Cassius Clay
Muhammad Ali he refused to get anyway. It was a
huge election that surprised everybody. We were expecting a Republican
(06:02):
wave election in two years ago, and we didn't get it.
In twenty twenty two, now is twenty twenty four. There's
a possibility I think that the real issues. Crime, not
just major crime, but the runaway shoplifting, a general difficulty
(06:25):
for anything anybody to govern in this country right now.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Inflation baked into.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Even though the growth data to stop the prior inflation
is still baked into all the prices. No border security,
illegal immigrants, flooding our cities, wokeness, failing public education, diversity inclusion, equity,
way too many government regulations, all of this stuff. These
(06:54):
are day to day issues that a lot of people
are sick to death of. They're not in organized groups,
they're not in the labor unions and things like that.
These are the people that I think will show up
their votes, will show up on election day.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
All right, So we got to hit a break here.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
If you were a betting man, and I know you are,
actually I don't know if you bet on the election,
but I know you wager from time to time, would
you bet that Trump wins.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
If I had to bet one or the other? Yes, Yes,
yes I would. Talking about betting the UK betting pools.
You've been following these, Yeah, they've hugely moved in favor
of Trump.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
The odds are way higher.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
And these are people who are motivated by the most
honest of motives.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
They just want to win money. You got it.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
When we come back, Mike Rosen and I are going
to discuss our differing takes on ranked choice voting and
Prop one thirty one, one of the most interesting, the
most interesting, and controversial ballot measure facing us this year.
Also coming up in the next few minutes, your chance
to win one thousand dollars thanks to Win River Spa
