Speaker 1 (00:00):
Listeners know that I love I love thriller novels, but
I'm very picky because I read so many of them
that over time you just come to realize some are
great and some are just like ugh.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
And so I only read the best, and I only
share the best with you. And I got one of
them in my hand and.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
It's it's entitled Defense Protocol. Is just published two days ago.
I think Andrews and Wilson and you if you don't
already know him from the Last Time Clancy novel that
they that they did, you'll know him from Tier one
and and other other series. Brian Andrews and uh and
Jeff Wilson. I had, I had Jeff only on the
show last time.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
For for the previous book. What was that Command and Control?

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Is that that one Active Fine, Active Defiance, Active Fiance, right,
And that was the one that was kind of an
homage to the I think fortieth anniversary of Hunt for
Red October.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
That's a great one. And so it's my it's it's
my first time talking with talking with Brian, So welcome
to both of you. It's it's great to have you here.
And I'll start by saying thanks for entertaining me. I
finished the book yesterday.

Speaker 4 (01:04):
Oh that's awesome.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
And Jeff will remember that my dad was ship surgeon
on the USS John F. Kennedy for a while and well,
you guys are you guys are both Navy. So my
parents are both Navy officers. My mom's a retired rear
admiralle believe it or not. My dad retired at O
six and so just wanted to share.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
That with you.

Speaker 1 (01:27):
So Taiwan is on everybody's mind these days, and I
think part of what jumps out at me about this
plot is that, unfortunately I could believe it if it
were a news story rather than a novel.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
So why don't you talk about that aspect a bit?

Speaker 5 (01:41):
Yeah, I think that one of the jobs of every
Tom Clancy author. You know, Tom Clancy really is the
godfather of the military thriller genre. And one of the
great things about what he did is he brought the
types of geopolitical topics to the American consciousness, right like

(02:01):
he he bubbled them up and made them accessible for
people who had no military experience, maybe aren't following what's
going on the news, or maybe don't appreciate or understand
why from a national defense and global economic standpoint, these
things matter, and so us taking over as the next
generation of clancy writers, writing Jack Ryan, that's incummon upon

(02:25):
us to carry on that tradition. And so the Taiwan
people heard about Taiwan. They know it's this island, it's
somewhere over in the Pacific, but maybe they don't understand
why it matters, or what the history is with China,
or the fact that you know, ninety percent of the
world's semiconductors are manufactured there, and that that intellectual property
is sort of like on hold between China and the

(02:47):
United States, and it's a pawn and a bigger bargaining,
global bargaining boxing match.

Speaker 4 (02:54):
So you know, we felt like this is a really.

Speaker 5 (02:58):
Important subject that a lot of people don't know, that
could be a tinderbox type of topic, and so that's
why it was the center of this book.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
So it's always interesting reading these novels trying to discern
whether the authors are thinking of any given character as
really representing someone who's alive now just with a different name,
or more like a composite or more like the kind
of person who could exist in the future. And I'm
curious in particular with the with the President of China,

(03:30):
with the premiere of China in this book, do you
think of him as chesin Ping with just a different name,
or as somebody who might come along in the future.

Speaker 6 (03:44):
I mean, I think there's some elements that are gug Ping,
for sure, but I think that he is more of
an amalgam of what that you know, CCP mindset is,
if you will, so he might even better represents the
mindset of the PLA and of CCP rather than just
an individual character. And that was important because, you know,

(04:05):
to sort of come off of what Brian was saying,
it'd be really easy to just write a book about
they attack Taiwan and we beat them off right then
they're gone and that's the end, and that's you could
have an exciting, action filled novel, but you would lose
a lot of the nuance that we can do through
the antagonists.

Speaker 4 (04:22):
You know, what are why haven't they taken Taiwan.

Speaker 6 (04:24):
It's not because they can't, like it's a couple of
minutes from their shore. Militarily, yeah, so, and yes we
would probably respond, but by the time we did. You
know what I'm saying, So, what is it that keeps
them from that. And so through that character and through
the you know, no spoilers, but through the the arc
from the antagonist's point of view that we developed, hopefully the.

Speaker 4 (04:44):
Reader sees some of the real world.

Speaker 6 (04:46):
Geopolitic that is keeping it in check, the impact economically,
the impact on China, but also the global community, the
allies that they need in the area, and how those
relationships might be severed. So we really needed that character
to tell that nuanced story of why Taiwan is still
being talked about after several years, and they wanted it,

(05:06):
why don't they take it? And we're going to keep
them want don't we just make sure that happens. There's
a lot more to it than that, because it's not
just about the military, it's about the geopolitic, the economic impact.

Speaker 4 (05:16):
Because we're a global community.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Now we're talking.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
I think that one thing that you said, Jeff, really
resonates with me is that you know, there's this c
CCP mindset. And then we also wanted to explore this
idea that maybe not everybody thinks it's a great idea
to steamroll Taiwan, maybe not even all the Chinese. So
our Defense minister character he is a loyal patriot, he

(05:42):
is he is all in when it comes to supporting
his nation. But now his president is looking at making
a move that he thinks, oh no, like this could
be disastrous for our people and for our nation. And
so we kind of folded that in as Hey, it's
not just this monolith where everybody in the entire country

(06:05):
is brainwashed, right, There's gonna be people in the chain
of command over there that question this decision.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
That makes a lot of sense.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
And folks, if you're just joining, we're talking with Brian
Andrews and Jeff Wilson, and their new book in the
Tom Clancy Jack Ryan series is called Defense Protocol. I
actually so, just so you guys know, I majored in
foreign policy, and I'm old enough that at the time
I was studying Soviet politics and Chinese politics, right, So

(06:33):
I love this stuff and I've been thinking about this
stuff since since the eighties, and the Defense minister character
exactly the way you just just described this, Brian. It
was interesting to me because if they're going to be
Chinese who are going to object to invading Taiwan, there's

(06:54):
basically two reasons they could do it. One is they
just don't think it's worse a good idea on the merits,
it's not the right thing to do. The other is
it's the right thing to do, but the cost would
be too high. Right now, they don't really have a
moral problem with taking Taiwan, they just don't want it
to come at the cost of everything they hold deer

(07:15):
And you know, the Defense Minister is probably a little
more towards one of those than the other. Maybe I
won't say which, just in not spoiling anything to say
to that.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
No, I think that's exactly right. I mean that was
you picked up on that.

Speaker 6 (07:30):
Thread that we were really going for, which is always
as a writer, it's exciting, exciting to see if someone
gets what we were trying to do, because it is
it is nuanced, and with your background and education, you
get some of that nuance, right, but sharing it in
a way that's not trophy but still lets the reader
see it was a really, really big deal for us.
So exciting that that came through.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
There's a character in the book who's a Chinese woman
who has been providing intelligence to the Americans for a
long time.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
And again I'm gonna word.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
This carefully because I don't want to spoil the book,
but so part of the plot though, is that America
used to have a lot of assets there and there
was a purge and there's very very few and this
woman is kind of like a lone wolf. Do you
think a person like that exists?

Speaker 5 (08:19):
Yeah, we do, and we what we we're really excited
about this character is, you know, in a lot of
spy novels, it's about the spy, right, the trained spy
who's you know, got to be got either coming out
from the cold or they're so deeply embedded that they're
worried about being discovered. And you know, what we thought

(08:39):
was so great about this character is that she's never
been a spy. She's been an asset logistiction so to speak. Right,
she helps manage the transportation, communication of other assets and
their ability to coordinate with this. And these types of

(09:02):
roles exist, but I think that they're not particularly well
known or celebrated. And she was so good that she
survived this purge. And this purge is actually quite real.
So you know, in real life, in the twenty fourteen
fifteen sixteen period, you know, the Chinese implemented a massive
dragnet that really swept through and you know, rounded up

(09:25):
lots of assets and damaged our intelligence collection apparatus significantly.
And so you know, we incorporated that into the story
and we were excited about imagining a scenario where somebody
survived that dragnet.

Speaker 4 (09:41):
How would she have done it?

Speaker 1 (09:43):
Big?

Speaker 4 (09:43):
There are two things interesting about her in my mind.

Speaker 7 (09:46):
Ross One is what Brian was saying, the managed asset
side of intelligence gathering is doesn't get a lot of
screen time in Hollywood or page time in books, but
it represents the bulk of day to day intelligence network gathering,
and so that made her fun.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
But the other thing that made her fun.

Speaker 6 (10:07):
Was that, you know, we're now existing in a world
of technology where art it's really hard to be a spy.
There's satellites that can read your less plate, there's a
camera on every street corner to monitor your movements. And
so what was fun about her was to say, how
could she have survived in this era where she could
only have done it by embracing old school spycraft. And

(10:31):
so that was I think really fun for us because
it was a little nod to early clancy work when
that's how things were done, and we got to bring
that into the book.

Speaker 1 (10:40):
All right, I want to just nerd out with you
for a minute. We just have a few minutes left,
but I want to nerd out with you for a
minute on strategic stuff. I'm looking at page two twenty
one here, and one of the characters is talking about
the defense posture of Taiwan related to China, and he says,
the defense doctrine here isn't superiority, it's denial.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
And I get it. Uh, can you elaborate on that
a little bit?

Speaker 5 (11:09):
Yeah, I think what you've seen over in the Chinese
theater is, you know, the Chinese are building these islands
out in the South China Sea, right. It's all about
pushing their maritime influence out and claiming that they have
control and hegemony over areas that supersede what's considered like

(11:30):
normal international waters.

Speaker 4 (11:32):
Right.

Speaker 5 (11:33):
So instead of twelve ninticle miles from land, they're pushing
out one hundred nine.

Speaker 4 (11:36):
Of miles of land and creating these exclusion zones.

Speaker 5 (11:39):
And so if you do that, you're in a position
where you can say, okay, well us you by international rules.

Speaker 4 (11:48):
You maybe think you can drive.

Speaker 5 (11:49):
Your carrier strike group, or you're just are the brick
destroyer into these waters and they're safe. But in reality,
we consider that a violation of Chinese territorial waters, and
we have the right to conduct, you know, an offensive
or defensive maneuver against you, or take defensive action against you.
And so you know, this idea that maybe US protecting

(12:12):
Taiwan would be an act of war because we're in
Chinese territorial water is It's a strategic and tactical.

Speaker 4 (12:25):
Posture that they're trying to implement.

Speaker 5 (12:27):
So if they take Taiwan, it pushes that maritime exclusion
zone completely out and jeopardizes our ability to have freedom
and navigation, freedom of commerce through the busiest commercial traffic
section of ocean in the entire world.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
All right, one more question for you. Does Katie Ryan
have a boyfriend?

Speaker 7 (12:53):
Now?

Speaker 4 (12:57):
Well, no, no spoilers. You know you then don't take
this the wrong way.

Speaker 6 (13:01):
Ross You sound like my wife, So like that was
the thread that my wife most jumped on, all of
the complex nuances of active clients.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
The only question she had at the end was what
happens happens him?

Speaker 6 (13:14):
Right, So I will tell you that in Defense protocol,
as you know because you've read it, there's a little
bit of a nod to that, but it's moving at
a pace.

Speaker 4 (13:23):
That Wendy is not happy.

Speaker 6 (13:27):
You're not going to give that away and spoil anything
for what's coming in the next book that we're working
on now.

Speaker 4 (13:31):
But yeah, she seems interested, doesn't she?

Speaker 2 (13:34):
She does.

Speaker 1 (13:35):
I was actually thinking of starting the interview with that question,
just to mess with you.

Speaker 2 (13:39):
So all right, I said that was.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
The last one, but I'll ask one more and you
could refuse to answer. What will be the primary geographical
setting for the next book.

Speaker 4 (13:55):
I think it's okay to say, what do you think, Jeff?

Speaker 5 (13:57):
Yeah, I think the next book is going to be
set in Africa, So there's a lot of complex and
very heated geopolitical issues there and we're going to play
around in that sandbox.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
Oh, that's going to be fascinating, I think.

Speaker 1 (14:11):
I think also a lot of Americans, and I'm not
going to ask you if this is what you're doing,
but I think a lot of Americans don't understand the
degree of Islamo fascist radicalism in huge numbers in Africa.
Everybody thinks about the Middle East, everyone thinks about Syria
and Lebanon and has balan hamas the issues with that

(14:32):
in Africa are truly massive. Defense Protocol is the new
book published just two days ago by Andrews and Wilson
Brian Andrews and Jeff Wilson, the latest in their Tom
Clancy Jack Ryan series. It is so much fun. Go
buy it, Go read it. Read it over Christmas. Maybe
you got a hankkah. You know you got a little
vacation time, you're off work for a couple of days.
You'll have so much fun with it. Again, it's called

(14:53):
Defense Protocol. You can buy it today because it was
published on Tuesday. Gentlemen, Thank you so much. It's good
to good to see one of you again. Good to
