Speaker 1 (00:00):
So happy. Welcome back to the show, Dave Logan, Voice
of the Broncos, of course, and that was a heck
of a win yesterday, Dave, and I actually want to
just jump into some nerdy stuff though, if you don't mind, Okay,
Yesterday during the press conference, Sean Payton said, and I
think he was maybe talking about the fourth down play

(00:23):
to Courtland Sutton, but he said, this is the kind
of thing that analytics doesn't capture and sort of talking
about why wasn't necessarily a huge fan of analytics, And
I kind of sort of think I get it, But
could you explain that to me?

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Well, I would say he was referring to there will
be opportunities during the game where the numbers, the analytics
will tell you something. Your analytics people will tell you
something that if the percentages say we should do this.

(01:06):
But I think head coaches have at times sort of
a gut instinct that they allowed to override in certain
situations those analytics, and I think that's what Bullshahn was
referring to yesterday. Oh J.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
Paton also kind of talked a little bit about saying
that we had the better offense, which I think is
safe to say when a win's a wind. But what
were some of the main highlights that we saw from
the offense that really said, Okay, we are no longer
the underdogs. We have a solid both sides of the ball.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Well, I think, Gina, I think when you look at
you know, you look at four touchdown passes by bon Nicks,
they hit some chunk plays, they hit some gas plays
against the team that really didn't give up many this
season coming in. Now. I know Michael Parsons got hurt
in the second half, and I understand that that's really

(02:00):
impacted the game. But I thought Denver was was really
good yesterday at creating some opportunities to get the ball downfield,
and you saw Courtland several times make some make some catches,
and I think, I think with Courtland, it's it's going
to boil down to when when there are opportunities to

(02:23):
get him isolated on a single receiver, a single defensive back,
and the safety is in a position that he cannot
help over the top of Courtland. He's just such a big,
dominant athlete that I think bo is feeling more comfortable
just giving him opportunities to go up and make the
make the play. I mean, the fourth nine to three
play that that basically sealed the game was a perfectly

(02:47):
thrown fade route in Courtland, just an excellent release right
off the line of scrimmage against press coverage. So yeah,
I thought they took the next step really offensively, made
some huge, huge plays, and they did it against the
defense again, the really good defense this year, in a
defense that does not give up many big plays at

(03:08):
all in a season. Dave.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
One of the things that I found so interesting in
your call. Obviously, you played professional football and you coach football,
and you do all this stuff, so you see the
game in a way that very few of us can
see it. And as I was listening to you yesterday
down at the other end with the pass into the
corner of the end zone, the touchdown pass to Courtland Sutton,

(03:32):
you made a comment that as soon as he went
in motion and you saw how the defense did or
didn't react, you said you knew right then, before the
ball was even snapped what was going to happen. Can
you talk about that a little bit, Well.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
I think it's just an illustration of my previous point. Ross.
I think that they sent I believe it was. I
can't remember it with lou George Humphrey or who was
with in motion, but again after the motion, after the shift,
I should say it was an emotion. You look out
there to the right side of the formation of Courtland

(04:08):
is by himself on a defensive back in the safety
you always look for, at least for wide receivers. You
always look for the alignment of safeties. Safeties will give
you an idea in your pre snap read what a
coverage cannot be a you know, so I knew it
couldn't be any sort of help coverage, any sort of
to any sort of thing where that safety could get

(04:30):
over the top and be a factor in a fade
rut to Courtland. And that's that's exactly where boll went
with the ball. And again I think it illustrates, at
least to me, the importance of taking advantage of matchups
where you have a guy like Courtland who physically is
just really difficult to deal with for some of these
corners in the NFL.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Okay, so Dave coming up on Sunday the Jags, I
think a lot of people thought of that as a
throwaway game. But the Jags around ten and four and
Rick Lewis did mention and that they've had a little
bit of a soft opening to their season. But sitting
on top of the AFC South, what do we need
to see from the Broncos in order to really secure
another home game win against the Jags on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Well, I mean, I think, honestly, it'll be help excuse me,
how quickly, excuse me, how quickly the Broncos can enjoyed
this game that they just won against Agreement Packers and
then put it away and you got to move on
to the next game, And you've got to do it quickly,
and you've got to completely clean the slate in terms

(05:32):
of sort of the clutter in your mind about how
well you played. But I mean, Jacksonville is a dangerous team.
I mean, they want to try to win their division,
and if they win their division, they at least get
one home playoff game. So I think this will be
a motivated Jaguar team that comes into Denver. But I
think also the Broncos have plenty of motivation themselves with

(05:53):
the kind of season that they're having and a chance
really to continue to secure that number one spot in
the af.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
It was interesting to hear coach Payton after the game,
when he talked about his goals of winning the division,
getting the highest seed possible, and then winning a world championship,
he didn't mention making the playoffs as even a goal.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Well, I think I think with the fact that he
mentioned all those things, you know, winning the playoffs would
just fall into that. You can't if you win the division,
you're in the playoffs. Right.

Speaker 1 (06:25):
What I meant Dave was he he has much bigger
he has much bigger goals. I don't mean it wasn't
a goalder at the playoffs, right. It's like he's telling
the team what you just said, like, Okay, we're in
the playoffs, that that doesn't mean this is just the beginning.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
No, that's I think you're You're absolutely right. I think
I mean Denm's going to realize where they are and
they've got to take advantage of this season. They've got
to take advantage of this moment because they've played really
good football the entire season. They're playing complimentary football, they're
getting great, significant play from all three phases of the game,

(07:05):
and they're in a position to be the number one
seed in AFC, which would mean they'd get a week
off and host two playoff games, and if you win
twice in Denver, where they have not lost, you would
go to the super Bowl. So I know that's getting
ahead of myself a little bit, but they've got to
take advantage of the kind of season they're having and
understand that. You know, it's important to do that this

(07:26):
year and not worry about next year or the years after.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
Dave real quick a listener asking if there's any injuries
we should be concerned about, because we definitely saw some
nasty ones for other teams over the weekend, But how
are we feeling an injury list for the Broncos.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah, really, Gene, I don't know because the Broncos, like
many NFL teams, are pretty tight lipped about that. So
Brandon Jones left the game with some sort of pectoral issue.
I don't have an update on him. I don't really know.
But you're always concerned, obviously with injuries, and you just
hope the guys are going to be able to to

(08:00):
get treatment.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
Abouts back Dave Logan, Voice of the Broncos, Thanks so
much for your time. As always, Dave, I'll see you
next Sunday. I'm doing the Parabolics again, so I'll see
you there.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
Sounds good, rough all right, Thank you Dave.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
